    Need advice:

I had the lap band surgery 2.22.10. I lost about 68lbs with it and stopped. After two pregnancies (lost all the baby weight each time) I noticed I still wasnt able to get much more off. After my 4th child was born (my 2nd band baby) I was having many issues with my band and come to find, it had slipped. I had the band removed and revision to gastric bypass this past August. I lost almost 60lbs since then and met and exceeded my goal weight, however it was a MUCH bigger change and a very stricter life style change then with the band. I would really consider talking over the options with your surgeon. Good luck!
  2. What stage of diet are you on now? Gulping is a hard habit to break, I'm 5 years out of WLS (6 months post op from my revision) and I still sometimes do it and pay the price lol. If you're on a more solid food diet I'd make sure to chew a little more, you might be getting some stuck. Good luck!!!
  3. I am 3 years post sleeve (I was a revision from lapband). I think I actually enjoy food MORE now than I did before. I value it, I enjoy each taste, I only eat good stuff, no room in my life for junky low quality food (unless I am really desparate!). I think a foodie type person can be successful with WLS if you value the sip of something fine & devine over the buffet of something "so-So". Having said that, I have made lifestyle choices to not hang with people that are super food motivated. I dated someone for 3-4 months who was really into eating and cooking - actually pretty healthy foods, but I STILL gained a bit of weight. Problem I have is I just need so little... it is hard for me to be that constant mode of planning, preparing and eating food only to repeat again soon. For me, it is easier to de-emphasize food, but I admit I love fine dining - I just like it at a restaurant, not too often and the best restaurants have epic appetizers because that is the size of meal I need.

    Scared husband

I'm just assuming here, but I think you and your significant others might be quite a bit younger than I am. This is probably the difference between us. I've been married to my husband for almost 40 years. He's been with me through thick and thin...literally!!! I am a revised lap-band, so we've been through all the highs and lows, so to speak. Even when I was at my biggest, 220+, and depressed and refused to go out in public, all he would do was beg me to go out. He never once said a word when I was big and was tickled pink when I was small. No jealousy, no mistrust!!! I feel for you guys! Hopefully, as time goes on, things will get better for you. It's hard enough to go through all the changes your body is going through right now without added pressure from the person you love most! Good luck to you all and just keep reminding yourself that this is the best thing for YOU!!!

  7. Embrace, Do you mind me asking about your weight history? Starting when you got your revision and current, for example? I have a consultation in the works and am just wanting to be sure I'm making the right choice for myself. Thx!!

Help! Kaiser or Anthem BC (in California)?

Was the 12/15 date with the surgeon or your KP PCP? I have my PCP appt tomorrow (2/23). I'm looking to do a revision of my lap band (cash pay outside KP) to sleeve. I can only hope my timetable is as quick as yours.

I'm having a revision done from a lap band slip to the sleeve. I hope this will go smoother . Since I,ve had the lap band before. But this is soo much more serious. I feel I won,t take care of myself as close as I should. Any suggestions?

    NOTHING

I hope you find your sweet spot and get the success you want. After I lost what I felt like was comfortable weight, I had my band unfilled thinking I could do the rest on my own. Not! When I returned to the doctor, after multiple visits, I could never find that sweet spot again. Too full, not full enough. I had it completely unfilled in August and have slowly put on weight. I have an appt with my Kaiser PCP tomorrow seeking a referral for band to sleeve revision. My advice is when you find your sweet spot... Leave it alone or it will forever be lost. Best of luck to you.
  11. I am a foodie.. I was banded in 2008 and was a success story.. Kept all my weight off for 6 years until my band eroded. I struggled with food with my band. I didn't tolerate meats or veggies very well but could eat a sleeve of Oreos.. I worked hard to make my band work. I had to work my butt off but I kept the weight off. I did throw up a lot with the band.. In May I was revised from band to bypass and damn I wish I had the bypass first! I love it. I eat whatever I want just tiny portions. I haven't thrown up once and honestly I'm healthier now than I have ever been! I have had no issues with vitamin deficiency. I take the same vitamins I did with my band but my numbers are better now! I didn't even consider the sleeve after my doc said a lot of the initial people sleeved are coming back to be revised to bypass. I was self pay for both so I didn't even consider the sleeve. Bypass helps me stay in control but I get to enjoy all foods! I love to cook.. I just don't really feel hunger but can enjoy the food I do make and eat..Feel free to msg me with any questions.

Would you have WLS again? What kind?

I was banded in 2008 loved my band! Lost all my weight in 9 months (120 pounds) kept it off for 6 years and then my band eroded. Had a revision to bypass in May. Wish I had done the bypass first. It is SOOOO much easier than the band was for me. I feel great, look great and my levels are actually better now than they were with the band surprisingly.. But I can eat foods now I couldn't with the band.. Like chicken, steak and all the veggies.. I struggled with meats with my band unless it was in some gravy. I haven't thrown up once since my bypass. I was anemic with the band but not with the bypass. I'm very pleased.

    Need advice:

I too was a bander and had to have a revision.. I was self pay for both surgeries. Lap band worked for me but it eroded. I chose Bypass over Sleeve because of the following: #1 reason - seeing the revision board on here from sleeve to bypass #2 I only wanted one last wls surgery #3 bypass is the gold standard.. #4 I wanted the one with the BEST results. Now with that being said, I would have been successful with the sleeve because I was successful with the band. I chose bypass quickly.. I just wanted the final one.. My doc said a lot of the first people sleeved are coming back for revisions to bypass .. That's all I needed to hear. I love my bypass! I had the revision done at the same time I had my band taken out. It's been 9 months and I am 3 pounds away from a Normal BMI. It's so much easier than the band was! I love it! I have not thrown up once!
  14. Hi. I started soft foods week 2. I can easily eat moist chicken or turkey and steamed green beans. I also eat chili no problem. Revised on 9 Feb 15.
  15. I had surgery 2/4. I pre-made my jello the day before my surgery. Stocked up on soups and protein drinks. Costco sells Premier Protein which I love. I've been drinking them since 2008 when I got my lapband and just revised to sleeve. Plus they are 30 grams of protein. Walmart had an Atkins shake that's Mocha Latte. I bought a 4 pack and am regretting I didn't get more. They are delicious. I bought small paper coffee cups and I put my soup in those. Ocean State Job Lot sells little containers. I stocked up on those. I made a batch of ground chicken meatballs and stored those in small containers and put in the freezer
  16. I've had the lapband for about ten years. The last few years it hasn't been working so I went to the doctor. He said my esophagus was dilated. I went to the gastroenterologist to see if this was going to cause long term problems. He did an upper GI and apparently my esophagus is the size of a stomach. He thinks the band is putting pressure on my vagus nerve and has fused my esophagus to paralyze. Has anyone had issues this extreme and had sucess with a sleeve revision? I'm concerned that my esophagus will just stay huge and store food.
  17. I am a revised lap-band. I've learned a couple of lessons, being banded first! I was sleeved on Feb. 3rd. This time around, when at a restaurant, I will NOT continue to eat until I'm not able to do anything but vomit. And I will NOT drink while I'm eating. I've decided that when the time comes to go to a restaurant, when I order my food, and no drink, I will also ask for a to-go box. When my food and my box arrive, I will leave the appropriate amount of food on my plate and the rest will go into the box, not to be seen again until the following day. I've never had a problem with leftovers. My son, who was sleeved 3 years ago, and his wife, still split an entre. He can only eat about 8oz and unless you're eating French, there's plenty on your plate to share! When I was banded, sometimes I would go the appetizer route. Usually Protein, but stay away from the fried stuff! NOT a good choice!!! Well, feel free to make other eating out suggestions! Good luck to everyone!!!

    Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I was on 80 mg of Omeprazole a day and tums several times a day. I had to be very careful when I ate, nothing spicy not even a little spice. I started having issues a few months after my sleeve as soon as the doctor tried to get me off Omeprazole after about 6 months he doubled the dose at 14 months I had the revision. So far I have had no reflux.
  19. I've never heard it called reconstruction, but going from the band to sleeve is usually called revision surgery.
  20. How are you doing ifein229 since having revision

Serious Question. How is WLS the "wrong way"?

So, I think WLS is a very good choice, but I do still cringe a bit at the very young, and even more so, the not very overweight. I get they have their reasons, but I sometimes feel that the serious nature of this business is not well understood. I am not talking about the direct surgical risk - I mean the unknowns of altering your body for a lifetime. For me, it was that or die young. If one of my sons (who are not obese, but one of them is slightly overweight) decided to do it, i would have a very strong opinion against it for them. Young people have metabolism on their side and genuinely believe that if anyone can make without surgery it is young people, particularly lower BMI. They are a good audeince for the "lifestyle" type programs like 20/20 that work on changing your healthy habits wholeistcally. I knew it was bad when the 2 year program i reached out to wouldn't take my money. Told me I didn't have a prayer without surgery- I was too obese for too long - my body had been changed by the obesity. Their honesty was one of the kicks in the gut I needed to revise from my failed band to the sleeve.
  22. Studies I read (this was 3 years ago, so check for updates) that as much as 30% of sleevers need to be on PPI longer term. A few need to revise to bypass since it so severe. The thing is, it spikes between years 3-6 post op. I theorize because by then people are more likely to overeat/eat too fast. I never had GERD or reflux until i was banded and it was the combination of restriction with overeating/eating too late that did it. Other than the first few months post op with sleeve I have not had excess acid and knock on wood that continues. I thought long and hard about it. This is my SECOND WLS, I don't want to revise again! I decided to take the risk and so far no regrets (I am 3 years out) but it is one reason I really watch portions. If it is a real worry for you - look into the bypass - it is one of the benefits of that surgery.

    Hair issues. Of course

I went through hair loss with the lapband surgery, even though I took Biotin and got my Protein in. It was very traumatic for me. This time around (after my revision), I'm a little more prepared for it emotionally. I'm 6 weeks post-op, so it hasn't started yet. I'm just dreading the time that it does.

    Weight gain and freaking out.

I spent last year cross fitting I'm taking a break while I heal from my revision. I weighed 182 when I started and a uk 18 I weighed 182 ten months later uk size 14. Cross fit puts muscle on quick but will improve your body. When you do something like cross fit you have to focus more on measuring/ clothes size especially if you are somewhere around the weight you should be because you probably won't lose and may gain some weight but imagine how fit, healthy and toned you will be! So hard when you have been purely focused on losing for so long, good luck!
  25. I had the gastric band and wanted a revision to the sleeve, but I also found out I have Barrett's esophagus and my surgeon would not do the sleeve. The reason is the shape of the new stomach a sleeve is made into will cause acid reflux which leads to Barrett's esophagus. Gastric bypass is known to get rid of acid reflux in most patients. I was freaked out and saddened by this, but I knew I didn't want to not have any weight loss tool so I went with the gastric bypass. I have never regretted doing it and my recovery was much easier than when I had the the band surgery. I have never had acid reflux again. I have to have a scope yearly and acid reflux medicine once a day maybe forever. I have not once thrown up or had that stuck feeling either. I had the revision a year ago this coming up may. I have never had to run to the bathroom for bowel problems. I have dumped only once and that was on Carmel popcorn I got for Christmas. My symptom was bloated stomach , sweating, stomach and I had to lay down from being extremely tired. When I woke up an hour later all good, but I wont do that again. I love the bypass!!
