  1. Being able to eat 4 cups of food doesn't mean you don't have restriction. It all depends on what the food is and over what period. E.g most people could probably manage 4 cups of icecream or yogurt or Soup or similar if they tried. Especially if it is eaten slowly.these foods are all sliders , go down easily etc. Most people would struggle to eat 4 cups of a proper solid Protein e.g beef/chicken/fish along with some vegetables and a small portion of carbs. ideally you should eat a meal over 20 - 30 min. If you take longer than that you will be able to eat more as the food will have started to pass through the band. So before you blame the band you need to look at a couple of things:- What are you eating? How long is it taking you to eat? Are you cheating the band by drinking fluids to help the food go down easier? It has been said many times that the band is only a tool. It cannot do everything for you. You are the one that still decides ultimately what you are going to put in your mouth. But if you are doing the right thing and the band is not helping then you need to go back to your Dr and discuss your problems and hopefully sort them out. Maybe you need more fill. You didn't say what kind of band you have. if it is a Realize band then typically more fill is required to reach restriction than with a lap band. You may have a leak - has this been checked. Good luck - hope you sort this out and get back on the road to losing really soon.

    Getting ravenous

I'll be two weeks out tomorrow. I think I've lost about 6 lbs since that fill now that I think about it. The thing is, I am worried I may end up too tight. I just had my yogurt for Breakfast and it almost started to come back up (started sliming). My doc told me two weeks ago that I had restriction even before I got him to agree to the other .8 ccs, but if he gave me any more than that, I would have issues swallowing my own saliva from being too tight in the mornings. I am thinking I need to restructure my eating to include Snacks, but it stinks because that will make getting all the Water in an even bigger challenge. Here is an example of a typical day for me (weekday): Morning (9-11 or 11:15) 1 medium coffee w/ 2 tsp non-dairy creamer 24-32 oz water Breakfast (11:30): 6 oz Dannon Light N Fit Yogurt, Frigo Light cheese stick (I add a small banana if I'm still hungry) (24 to 32 ounces of water in between) lunch (3:30): Left over dinner (chicken or beef) from the night before- 6 oz, a small side of green Beans or carrots and a frigo light cheese stick (24 to 32 ounces of water in between) Dinner (7 or 7:30): chicken or beef (6 ounces), 1/3 cup veggies Evening snack (optional--maybe 2 or 3 days/week): Skinny cow ice cream bar or sugar free pudding with one scoop of Protein powder Am I expecting too much from my band by expecting to go so long in between meals? I thought we should be satisfied for 3 to 4 hours..... Should I try to break up my meals? I can try to eat earlier, but it is VERY hard to get anything to go down except liquid. Again, my yogurt had a rough time of going down just now, so I'm going to bag the cheese stick and banana and just wait to eat again--if my band is cranky today, I don't want to piss it off by trying to eat any more for breakfast, and for some reason I'm not really hungry anymore. I am a MESS! I know! Thanks for listening and for your advice!!!
  3. Sleevers, I am two months post-op and feel I have the protein counting down, but am not certain I am on track with my supplements. Here are the vitamins I currently take, how does this compare to what you take? Daily A.M. 1 Prevacid (Why do we take acid-reducers? I do not have any reflux issues - do you still need to take these) With Breakfast which is usually cottage cheese & yogurt, 1 250 mg calcium citrate supplement (Can't wait to try the lemony Cal-cet when I run out of my current supply.) 10:00 ish 2 Viactive multivitamins - but I found in the small print this weekend that they have the "wrong" kind of calcuim, so I need a new chewy, chocolate multivitamin - Any suggestions? 4:00ish Every 3rd day, either a B12 or an Iron supplement. That's it. I just don't want to be missing something my body is needing. Thanks for sharing your regime.
  4. Thanks Carol. It's interesting that I'm fine when I eat greek yogurt and cream of wheat w/soymilk, but as soon as I add in Optimum Nutrition Whey powder or Chike, I go off again. I haven't had any cream soups, except Trader Joe's Organic Creamy Tomato soup and I think I was ok with that. It seems to be the Protein powders that do me in. I'm hopeful that I'll soon be on pureed foods, just another week or so, then I can get my protein from better sources. I'm glad I'm not the only one in this boat, but that said, I'm sorry it happened to you as well. I'm glad yours cleared up. I'd hate to not be able to eat cheese etc.
  5. I was able to eat cheese, and Greek yogurt easily, but milk was a no-go. I'm not a milk drinker, but I gave it the good ole college try with bouts of diarrhea following.
  6. Thanks for the replies Tiffy, Nikki and Jewels. I think this is just going to be a learning process for me. I did ok on Greek Yogurt this morning followed by Cream of Wheat w/soymilk for lunch. The Cream of Wheat was great after living on Soup and yogurt.

    Crushing meds

I'm not allowed to eat applesauce until the third week post op. I tried to put it in yogurt but just couldn't get it down. I made the mistake of just trying to swallow them last night. Big mistake. I think one got stuck and I've got some pain and discomfort. I don't know how some of you did it with just swallowing them whole. I'm not going to take anything until I talk to the office tomorrow.

    Camping food...

No puree, that wasn't any part of my diets. Stage 2 from my doc states: Proteins - Lean soft and moist meats (fish, tuna, poultry, or pork), low fat cottage cheese, low-fat or non-fat cheese, soft tofu, eggs or egg substitute, soft low fat casseroles with soft vegetables; Milk - Fat Free or skim, sugar free or low fat yogurt; Fruits & Vegetables - Any fruit/vegetable without seeds or hulls that have been cooked soft. Soft unsweetened canned fruits or vegetables, fresh soft fruit; Bread & Cereals - Hot cereals cooked in milk (oatmeal, grits, cream of wheat), cold Cereal (high protein) soaked in milk, toasted bread or plain soda crackers; Other - Sugar free Jello, popsicles, pudding/custard. Problem is I won't have access to ice and stuff to keep things cold all week. I will need as much that can be stored at ambient temps as possible. That's where I'm getting lost.
  9. Thank you !!! That gives me some serious leads. Oikos Triple Zero Greek yogurt and Quest bars are big favorites already. Glad to know they'll be staples.

    I'm hungry!

Hi. I'm in the exact same boat. I'm entering my third week since the surgery and I'm super hungry as well. The first couple weeks, I couldn't eat much b/c I was so swollen. Now, I just want to eat everything, but I don't want to hurt myself. Today, I went to get some Slim Shots at Walgreens. I've read they curb appetite w/out making you feel like you're bouncing off the walls. Today was just my first day on them. So far, no change. I'm getting bored eating the same things over and over again. All I ever eat is 4 oz of refried beans, or 4 oz of light cottage cheese, yogurt, pudding, blah, blah, blah. Trust me, I feel your pain!

    Need meal ideas

Hahahaha! I get ya! I get ya! I definitely had to keep home girl down on the farm this weekend cuz I was "having ideas" and "notions." LOL So ok, if I can't wrangle those ideas. I have plans for them! Mac n cheese (old)>>sub with cauliflower mac n cheese. For cheese sauce, I cheat (cuz again, we're talking 1/2c totes vol.) and use Tostitos Queso in a jar or anything that is around 2-3g carbs and less than 50 cals per 2-4 tbsp serving. I also can deal with the Classico Lite Asiago Romano Alfredo and use grated parmesan to make an "Italian" version of that. Pizza (old)>>carb balance or carb sense flour tortilla nuked on a paper towel until very crisp. Top with grated part skim mozz or red fat Sargento's Italian blend and your fave pizza topping. Put under toaster oven until brown and bubbly. Cut into 1/4s and enjoy a whole 1/4 slice ( LOL ) Quesarito (old) Now you're talking real ass work here girl! - So I'd do this only when you have appropriate leftovers: ground taco meat and cooked and seasoned cauli rice. Then I would just make a quesadilla using the carb sense tortilla and fill it with your favorite stuff from the TB version and use the Tostito's Queso and get some TB Hot Sauce from the store. Done! Boom baby! Craving extinguished. Enjoy both bites. hahahahahaaha! Grilled Cheese Sandwich (old) Use Sarah Lee red carb/cal bread of some other kind. Not really sure what they are since it's been years since I've had them. OR you can use parm, pork rinds, and almond flour to bread slices of zucchini. Spray with olive oil spray. Bake until golden on each side. Top half with part skim mozz and let it melt. Top with the second slice. And serve with a side of the lowest carb/cal marinara! Here's my Fluffy Chix Cook link: http://fluffychixcook.com/crunchy-low-carb-fried-zucchini-grilled-cheese-gluten-free/ Brownies, go to the recipe section and see all the molten choco cake recipes using protein powder, coco, egg whites and Greek yogurt. They nuke in about 40 seconds.
  12. I had my surgery on the 30th. The doctor said thebsurgery went very smooth. However, I did have problems with severe nausea first 3 days , and sever gas pains. The gas has finally started to get undercontrol and nauseau is very well conrolled. Maybe once a day at most now. I am now on full liquids but only have added greek yogurt because I cant stomach the protein. But greedily I want to wat mostly because Im tired of broth 😕 any ideas on what else to eat on?
  13. I had mine 5/31. Feeling better today than I have been. So far I've gotten 52 oz between flavored water and protein shakes today. I have Greek yogurt worth my pills in the morning and then work on it throughout the day when I can't stand another sip of protein shake. Judy glad I'm able to get a much in now than the last few days. But keep thinking of pepperoni for some reason. Like I really want a pepperoni. Oh well, soon enough. Another "Old Timer" With Issues

I have been almost totally unfilled for one week now, due to a large esophageal dilation. I am allowed only liquids and mushies. I have not cheated, but out of self-pity I have eaten some things I should not have. In the last week, I have had: 3 kinds of beans 2 kinds of potatoes 4 varieties of soup many flavors of LF yogurt SF Popsicles SF fudgesicles applesauce ice cream (the real thing, but only the little Dixie cups and only one per day) SF Jello (with FF topping) lots of hot tea, SF peach tea, and bottled water Starbucks non-fat latte SF pudding left-over chocolate from Easter (almost all gone now, thank goodness) If in doubt, I put it in the blender to make sure it's "legal". Sometimes it turns out yummy....sometimes not. I could have eaten blended "chili soup" but anything spicy right now burns my throat - it's that irritated.

    Confused & Worried

Yogurt is a good source of protein, though. I buy the sugar free, fat free which is like 80 calories.
  16. Hey! Band removal, sleeve revision, & hiatal hernia repair 5/20. Home on Wed....so far doing really well. I think having gone through this post op eating with the band, it isn't so foreign. It ain't great, but in the long run it'll do. Actually had some Greek yogurt yesterday which helped substantially with the gas pains I'd been dealing with. Today I surprised myself and actually walked a mile...took a while, but I did it. Drain removal set for Tue...hope that helps the left shoulder pain I've had today. So, yeah...I'm doing pretty well.
  17. When you say solid foods, do you mean things like chicken, or are you counting cottage cheese and yogurt in that?
  18. Some foods are sort of notorious for gas production--Beans, certain veggies, etc. So this may be a contributor, depending on what "normal food" means to you. I found, post-banding, that I've become lactose intolerant. Anything containing milk (except yogurt and cheese; the bacterial cultures in those prevent the problem) makes me terribly gassy. It's my understanding that this is not unusual post-bariatric surgery (but more common after RNY). I also have NO tolerance for sugar; I found this out when treating my just-discovered lactose intolerance with Rolaids---it didn't even occur to me to be concerned about the amount of sugar in a Rolaid, but it caused great gastrointestinal distress. So, two new intolerances identified at once! (Fun.) BUT--the most common reason for gas is swallowing too much air when eating. I assume you're not using straws or drinking during meals, since your doctor probably forbade these both. But also remember to chew slowly and carefully and don't talk while eating. (I don't mean don't talk during the meal--just not between putting a bite in your mouth and swallowing.)
  19. You will feel it with Yogurt and cottage cheese too, not just chicken. (At least I do)

Can't Believe I Just Ate All Of That!

Different foods "slide" for different people. Pintos and cheese must slide for you. LOL My sliders are yogurt, cottage cheese, oatmeal and chex mix!

    newbie and prep questions!

Congratulations! I'm sure you're very excited to be in your last few weeks before surgery! It's a really exciting time! I was sleeved in June and to prep for surgery I... - stocked up on all my "food" chicken broth, Popsicles, baby food, Protein powder (my hospital reccomended Bariatric fusion so I got that. I didn't love it. GNC has one that is similar that I perfer) and light yogurt. You aren't really going to feel like going out very much the first couple weeks, and remember you aren't supposed to be driving so I got everything I needed as far as that went. -I also did a major cleaning in my house. Washed all the bedding, disinfected, de-cluttered everything. It's much nicer to come home to recover when you have a clean home! - I also got magazines to read. You are supposed to be up and walking every hour, but your body does need a lot of rest too- so I made sure to have things to keep me entertained. - I wrote in my blog a TON! Writing helped me sort out all the emotions I was going through. -Something fun- buy a cute outfit in your dream size! It's nice to have that in your closet to keep you motivated Good luck!!

    Ditching the protein shakes

I just had my telephone appointment with my surgeon and he told me that I can start adding food to my diet but not to fully get rid of the shakes just yet. I have to make sure food agrees with my stomach. So far so good. My book I got from Kaiser gave me a sample of foods to eat daily with the amount of Protein. I am going to try that sample because I cannot handle anymore of the Protein drinks. For example 3 weeks after surgery: Breakfast: 1/4 c scrambled egg substitute 7.5g, Snack: 2 Tablespoons of reduced fat Peanut Butter 8g, Lunch: 1/4 c low fat greek yogurt 6g, Dinner: 1/4 c reduced fat cottage cheese 7g. (I will most likely do yogurt or eggs again). = 28.5 g of protein. I hope this helps.
  24. @@cat.jackson89 - You are welcome! I didn't cook a lot during that time. I ate a lot of hummus (just with a spoon); sugar free chocolate pudding with 1/2 scoop of chocolate Protein powder mixed in; greek yogurt with 1/2 scoop of vanilla Protein Powder mixed in (Dannon Light & Fit strawberry Cheesecake and Key Lime are my favorites); pimento cheese (mixed in a little unflavored protein powder); chicken salad and/or tuna salad (try with 1/2 lite mayo and 1/2 greek yogurt); and Laughing Cow cheese wedges. I cannot think of anything else right now but will come back if I do! I ate a lot of refried Beans with the cheese. That really hit the spot for me. (I added in a little spices to it like garlic salt and onion powder). You can also look under the forum here for food and nutrition and I think there is a whole section about pureed foods that might give you some ideas. Good luck!!
  25. First of all, congratulations your loss! :-) What do you do about carbs? What kind of carbs do you eat? My carbs mainly come from my fruit and veggies and milk. Once in a while I'll have a couple bites of sweet potato but that's about it. Typically for Breakfast I have 1 egg and 2 pieces of bacon. If I don't feel like cooking I will eat a greek yogurt, but a real one. Like Fage or Chobani and add some fruit. I don't eat the Dannon or yoplait Greeks because they are very processed. banana and a nut butter for snack. Turkey and cheese for lunch and maybe a salad. Nuts for a snack. And dinner with the family. I eat the same as them but no starch. That's about it. Pretty simple.
