Fruit and yogurt have carbs and carbs are stored in the liver. The goal of the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver/burn all the stored carbs in your liver. My pre-op diet was basically Adkins phase 1 (high protein, very low carb).

I am craving it like I am pregnant. I love PB and I have really missed yogurt & fruit the last 12 days - pre-op diet bites ;/ just sayin' Anybody else out there struggling with one particular food on the pre-op????
-
I caved because I crave peanut butter and I am supposed to be on a pre-op diet. Why is the doc wanting no fruit or yogurt (even FF) I would gladly swap out for that. Tomorrow is the all liquid day and surgery at 7am on the 6th...

Pre-op diet is a b***h
ValerieDee1975 replied to SlimJill's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I totally get where you are coming from...I admit to cheating a little bit, nothing awful. I have lost 3 lbs. since May 1 But I hate the food commercials and no one is allowed to talk about food around me lol We can do it, just think of what we will get and we will eventually be able to eat most of what we want again, within reason! I still have just over a week (13th) to go and so far I haven't gotten really mean...feel like that may come when I have to stop my NSAIDs...not sure how well I can handle both hunger and pain My pre-op diet is 2 shakes, lunch and Breakfast and a Smart Ones for dinner (or the like)....was having a hard time with that so my nutritionist said I could add up to 3 Snacks a day, like a boiled egg, string cheese, lf cottage cheese, nsa yogurt, or 1 oz. of chicken. In my area Kroger carries their CarbSmart yogurt which has been really good and only has 3g sugar and like 9g protein and good flavors. I am having a harder time getting in all the water/liquid that I need too...even with adding flavor...so I think I am slightly dehydrated, but I am working on it! WE CAN DO IT!!! Good Luck -
Hi there, glad you have an appointment to discuss this with your surgeon. People have different comfort levels as far as restriction. The band is designed to dim the appetite, not to prevent foods from going down. That said, we all have our foods that don't go down well. Many people can't tolerate apple peels. Slippery foods were problematic in the beginning for me because I let them go down too fast before they were chewed well enough. I was such a gobbler and it took me a long time to learn how to really slow down and listen to my body. I mostly cook with chicken thighs now or I pound the chicken. If I'm out I avoid chicken completely because reheated chicken doesn't work for me and I have worked in enough restaurant kitchens to know that it can be tough. It's just too fibrous for me. Beef has to be pretty soft and I chew it very well. I treat myself to a filet mignon once in a while -- figure we are saving so much on my measly little meals that I can have whatever I want. Fish always works and I love fish. And I don't really do breakfast in the morning, although today I was hungry so I had my Greek yogurt with nuts and seeds, etc. If I'm hungry, I eat. If I'm not hungry, I don't eat. If I don't have mix-ins in my yogurt it is a slider for me. Oatmeal is on my slider list as well. I have to have the chewing going on in order to achieve satiety.

1 week post fear I may be losing too fast
scrosler replied to Joshua Barbour's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow! I was just coming on here to ask the same question! I had VSG on 4/20. My starting weight was about 418. Yesterday I weighed in at 385! I thought the scale was broke so I tried another one at the walk in clinic. It was accurate. So I am with you, about 2.5 pounds a day is what I loose. All of my foods thus far have been step 2 slider foods. I think thats what they are called (I'm a newb). I have eaten nothing but Protein supplements, soup, Greek yogurt and sip Water all day. For the first time in over 5 years I was able to walk 1 complete mile without any back pain (which was the reason I got the surgery, facet joint disorder in my lower back). I feel energized all the time where as before surgery, I would want to take naps during the day. Could barely stay awake for an 8 hour shift at work. I had a couple friends tell me that even after 6 weeks of being on disability they could barely muster the energy to go back to work. IM on my second week off and I am dying to go back to work (Ok, I am not dying to go to work but you get the idea ). Glad I am not alone in thinking that I am loosing too fast! -
I didn't really have breakfast before, maybe a yogurt or brunch on weekends (loved eggs Benedict!!!). Now, not hungry until mid afternoon. Probably not forever, but it's working. Today I hit 100 lbs lost since surgery 04/26/14!

My surgery is Monday April 6th
LeeRN replied to MPerkins's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had the sleeve on April 6th as well. Doing ok except I'm still learning when to take that last bite. It seems a few times I ate a bite or more than I should have and oh my poor stomach. It's almost 3 pm today and all I had is maybe 10 sips of a banana, yogurt and peanut butter smoothie with soy protein powder and I feel stuffed. I can't even drink. I'm afraid I'll become dehydrated some day because it's hard to get in the amount of water expected of me. Good luck and keep us april sleeves updated on your progress. -
Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
Band07 replied to snowkitten's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm glad the pain is better ! How far out are you ? I'm still very very weak, I'm still trying to survive on liquids and yogurt. I think I'm dehydrated, I just don't even like the thought of having to try to consume anything right now I did mix a little bit of a baked potato in my food processor last night with a ton of chicken stalk to make it runny and then lots of salt. It was delicious and went down okay. I'm SO sick of sweet things right now -
I've had my band for over two years now. I had two fills early this year, first ones I've had since having the band put in. I have a total of 1cc of Fluid in my band. Lately I've been having trouble in the morning with my greek yogurt. I can eat my oatmeal and not have any problem, but if I try to eat my yogurt first I get that stuck feeling. It feels like my stomach shrinks over night. I've not been able to eat certain kinds of beef. Steak and roast are off my menu now. I had to switch to dark meat chicken, because chicken breast gets stuck. I've got to the point where I'm terrified to eat anymore. I never know whats gonna go down or get stuck. Do you think that my band might be to full.

Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
Googler replied to snowkitten's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
The pain is much better, thank you. Today's foods have been: 1 nectar Protein shake (w/200 ml 2%milk) 2 hb eggs w/mayo, 150 grams greek yogurt 150 ml chicken noodle Soup + 4 crackers, ~50 oz Water ...and it's nearly 7pm. I don't feel any restriction, but I'm not pressing it to try and feel the restriction. I think I'm still too numb and don't want to chance it. And you? How's it going for you? -
Feeling sick after eating
Alex Brecher replied to Kathrine1970's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Kathrine1970, Sounds like you got the reassurance you need. Could be just the first time you ate something more solid than yogurt, or it could be you developed a food intolerance to the fish or carrots. Like the others said, try one food at a time (so you can determine if it’s fish or carrots or neither) and be patient. If it really is an intolerance, it could take days or weeks or months to work itself out, and the only thing you can do to help is to not push it. If your body doesn’t take it, it doesn’t take it. Good luck. You’re doing well! -

5 days post op can't do all liquid diet. Anyone else do okay on soft foods?
Miss Mac replied to nugirl402's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
This is one of your bariatric mothers speaking............... Bacon at 5 days?????? Are you kidding me? Dear bariatric daughter, please go to Youtube and watch a real video of the surgery you just had, to remind yourself of how brutalized your stomach is right now. You would not give bacon and eggs to a newborn, so don't expect to go complication-free if you are pushing your recovery schedule up by weeks. At five days, you might be considering purees. At least then you could take kitchen food and run it through the blender with broth so that it is still wet enough to roll off a spoon. Even those of us with progressive surgeons don't get to soft foods any sooner than two weeks. I know you miss flavor, crunch, and chewing - we all did. But you can't let your taste buds run the show. I don't know if you are into Bible stories, but consider the Israelites wandering through the wilderness (men did not ask for directions back then, either). God sent them manna from heaven. It was a completely nutritious edible (although strange) food meant to sustain their bodily needs for energy and health (kind of like our Protein shakes). But noooooooooo, they missed their leeks and onions and were very vocal about it. They were alotted so much per day (portion control). If they got greedy and gathered too much, it just rotted and got wormy. So whether you believe it as historical fact or Aesop's fabel, the point is this: can't do liquids anymore and don't want to do liquids anymore are two different things. I encourage you to be strong and resist the temptation to satisfy your tastebuds over the proper healing of your digestive system - you sort of NEED it to survive. If you don't want to be miserable, then don't jump your plan by eating foods your stomach is not ready for. A rupture is a lot more miserable than one more Protein shake. If you have to, put your shake in a blender and add some yogurt, vanilla, sweetener, very ripe banana, and make it thin enough to pass as a puree. Or get vanilla shakes and add your favorite flavor of fruity baby food. You will pass through these phases soon enough. This is only one month of your new lease on life. You knew going into this that it was going to be inconvenient and uncomfortable for a while. So, chin up.....you will heal in no time if you knuckle down and follow the plan your surgeon gave you. Our surgeons do enough of these that they know what works and what causes complications that you would not wish on your worst enemy. I wish you good luck and good health. Do you darndest to get control. Your new tummy is now the boss of you and will demand respect. If that is through vomiting, diarrhea, reflux, foamies, or chest pain then Tummy has spoken. Please be kind to yourself. I am guessing that you will do what the last poster just said and disregard the rest of us, but that indeed is your call. I would give you one caveat: at the first sign of distress, back off to the previous stage. You did this to feel better and be healthier, so if any food you eat hurts or your tummy gives it back, then you were not ready for it yet. Just be careful. -
5 days post op can't do all liquid diet. Anyone else do okay on soft foods?
nugirl402 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey! Had surgery On 4/28 with no real issues. Have the premier shakes and they are too strong and taste gross. Trying to do at least 1 a day but have been leaning to Greek yogurt. Took my time, no problems. This morning had 1 scrambled egg and a piece of well chewed bacon. Took 15 minutes to eat it. Feel so much better that I'm eating real food. Anyone else not tolerate the liquid stage? I wanna be successful but can't be miserable the whole time. -
Hi All! Am in Houston. I had my DS surgery on March 12, 2015 & have lost 53 lbs so far. I am having real issues with eating in general. I continue to have acid issues even though I am taking Prilosec & Pepsid night and day. Am also throwing up a couple times a week after eating. Yesterday I tried a smoothie make with Greek Yogurt and frozen fruit only finished 1/2 of it......I keep going back to soft foods but those are very limited on Protein. ...what is your suggestion to get through this rough spot??

Do you allow yourself any healthy splurges?
TheRealMeIsHere! replied to Swampdoggie's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Thought of some other ways that I enjoy 'cheat' foods. Protein powder mixed with Water and crushed ice, blended in a bullet type blender till smooth. Can add PB2 or frozen fruit also protein refrigerator oatmeal. My favs are chocolate covered cherry and banana bread flavors flour-less Protein Powder pancakes with just a drizzle of real maple syrup faux-frying www.hungry-girl.com has alot of great recipes Dannon Light & Fit 80 calorie Greek yogurt Greek yogurt in place of sour cream Hungry girl cauliflower potato salad (has actually fooled people at BBQ's) and cheesy butternut bake (tastes like mashed yams) cauliflower & Laughing Cow wedges blended with and immersion blender till smooth. Tastes so much like mashed potatoes, I've served at Thanksgiving and no on knew! I've had to discover and develop these recipes because carbs such as bread, Pasta, rice, potatoes and sugar make me crave more & more and make me very hungry. So now I eat those things rarely and in tiny, 1-2 bites, portions. The rest of the time, I can have the same satisfying flavors & textures and not feel like I am missing anything -
Day 12 Post Op. My new "birthday" is April 20
nyxn posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello all! It has now been 12 days since I had my laparoscopic gastric sleeve done, and each day I'm getting healthier. Still have an issue with internal pain on the right side, and one of incisions on the right got infected, so my GP prescribed Cephalexin 4x daily. The pill is the size of a horse and smells horrible. Thank goodness I can snap it in half - only was I can take it. I weighed myself this morning and it looks like I'm at 280 lbs. My pre-surgery weight on April 1 was 334 lbs. Not sure how accurate that is given they are two different scales so will hold off doing the happy dance until my clinic appointment for weigh in on the more accurate scale to see exactly where I'm at. food wise, week 1 and most of 2, I subsisted on Greek yogurt (Oikos vanilla, lime, honey), Hunts chocolate pudding cups, and Ensure High Protein. I tried Heinz baby food (prunes and sweet potato) as well as Campbell's ready to serve cream Soups, but I was just not a fan after one serving. The soups (butternut squash, cream of asparagus with basil, and roasted cream of potato with leeks) all tasted the same. The baby food helped, but in the back of my head it was still baby food and I just couldn't go past that. The food bank will be happy, I've got a bunch of stuff heading their way! April 29, I thought I was far enough along that I could have something soft and went for brunch with a friend. Ordered salmon with mashed potatoes. Boy was that ever a big mistake! It came with a side of toasted French bread. I thought if I chewed the bread to paste consistency I'd be okay. Ya. No. That minuscule amount of bread went down like cement and I was in pain for close to 30 mins. I managed to eat a little mashed potato, but again, did not sit well. Yes, I acknowledge that I'm a moron who should have waited another week before making even the mash potato attempt! May 1, I was able to eat the 85g Cloverleaf Flaked Light Tuna Lemon Pepper. Chewing slowly and eating half a teaspoon at a time. May 2, I scrambled one egg with some milk and didn't have a problem eating it. For lunch, I tried eating a couple of Premium saltine crackers with 85g of Cloverleaf Flaked Light Tuna Dill and Lemon. The crackers did not go down well. Similar reaction as the toast, not as painful, but uncomfortable nonetheless. Later, as a snack, I tried (and finished) a cup of chocolate Cheerios. Went down just fine and no pain. It took me a good half hour or so to finish... But who'd have thought? I think I'll try a cup for Breakfast tomorrow! I'm suppose to "officially" start the soft foods part on Monday and am looking forward to making homemade chilli and guacamole. Has anyone had any problems with either? I've been trying to get to my Calcium and protein goals each day, but it's bloody hard! Today I finally hit my calcium goal, but was still out by 11g for my protein. How's everyone else who was sleeved around the same time as me doing? Cheers! Mercedes -

I make my salads reflect my favorite sandwiches. Used to love Italian subs and ham subs. So, on my salads I put ham & turkey, sweet/hot salad peppers, red onion & 1T light mayo mixed with red vinegar. I make pizza on half of a Joseph's Lavash, sauce, part skim mozzarella, turkey meatballs or turkey pepperoni, peppers, garlic, onion, etc.... Near me, there is an ice cream place that has soft serve fat free/sugar free yogurt that they can make in over 50 flavors. I get a child size 2-3 times a week. Quest Protein chips I have learned how to sub zucchini or eggplant for Pasta. Cauliflower for 'rice', 'tater tots', 'mac & cheese', etc.... Snack pack sugar free pudding cups Those are some of the ways that I 'splurge' -
@@Amanda0305 Greek yogurt is denser than soup broth. It should take you longer.

I wish i could eat that fast. :-) this morning it took me like 45 min to do 1/4 cup of Greek yogurt. I have been trying to go show bc after like every bite i get purpy and a little chest pain. The pain eases as soon as i burp or my tummy gurggles, but it's uncomfortable so i am going slow. I had to warm my 1/2 cup of soup up 3 times last night Lol

Brunch of last night's coconut chicken with cilantro and even more lime squirted on for good measure.......yum. Usually I skip breakfast and get hungry mid-day. My husband is consistently hungry at 11:00 and has what Tolkein referred to as "Elevenses." By this time he's already had a big serving of full fat yogurt with a dollop of cherry preserves. After breakfast and elevenses he is looking for lunch. Then tea. Then dinner. Geesh, no wonder I was fat! Not him, though. Genetics, sigh.

I've never liked breakfast and never will but these days I have it in order to exercise. Breakfast now is sometimes yogurt sometimes a handful of nuts and sometimes a can of tuna.

What else besides protein shakes on 6 days post op?
BLERDgirl replied to nugirl402's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your nutritionist should have given you a list of acceptable food. Eggs were not on my list until I was on purees. My first 2 weeks were full liquids. Protein shakes, cream soups, broth, water, diluted juice, greek yogurt were all acceptable. If you are unsure, you should call your nutritionist and review acceptable foods. Yes the protein shakes will get tedious, but it's only temporary. following your medical team's advice is important in the healing of your new tummy. -

If I can take Greek yogurt can I do s soft scrambled egg? I can't do these protein shakes all day. Not having any problems keeping applesauce down either.
