    Fears with Revision Surgery

So, I'm the girl that woke up after band removal only to discover they couldn't do my revision to RNY....too much damage and inflammation, too risky to revise at that time. Six months later I got my RNY. The first few weeks in between totally sucked. I was an emotional mess. Mad at my body, mad at myself, mentally a mess. But time moved on and next month I'm 1 year post RNY. I have lost much slower than my bariatric surgery virgin counterparts. But I've lost and it has been so much easier than my band ever was. At 5'6 and 195', I'm about 40 pounds from a healthy weight. I can eat small amounts of almost anything. I never get stuck, slime, throw up. I never have pain. I do dump and still get random bouts of nausea from time to time. I no longer feel starved or deprived. It has been fabulous. You'll do fine and are normal to have fears . You'd be crazy not to!!!!!
  2. I'm almost six years out and there's nothing I cant eat. Some people are just like that. I can eat bread, rice, Pasta. But I will say, some things are harder and I've naturally gone off them over time - bread for example. I cant even really put it into words, i can eat it, it doesnt get stuck but it doesnt feel good to eat. So I rarely eat bread - just the occasional piece of toast. Yet when I was unfilled last year for 9 months, I suddenly loved bread again, and ate it regularly - though in moderation. The minute my fill went back in, I stopped enjoying it, almost instantly. I've lost weight easily and kept it off for years simply by eating all foods, just less.
  3. Its really strange u should post this because i weigh 1 lbs less than u am having plastic surgery in 2 and half weeks and an unfill of 1 mls the monday before surgery. It was actually me that decided that i wouldnt have the 1 mls put back into the band unless i found it hard to keep maintaining. I think for longevity of the band and continued no complications to have a band that is slightly looser has to be a good thing not bad. My plastic surgeon and my band surgeon do not want me to lose any more weight as they think i could lose at least another 10lbs from skin removal so i am biding my time. Once i have this surgery i really dont want to lose more weight just what removal of the skin would be, so i shall bide my time on any refill, if i need one i will go slow again maybe a 0.25 or something but u will be quite a long time healing anyways and really the fill is the last thing u should worry about. I was thinking omg an unfill at first then what happened to shirley hit the forum then a few other posts of longer term banders and i just thought ok i want this band to last me as long as possible i will see if i can maintain with it a little loser to give it every chance of remaining in situ good luck with the surgery and concentrate on healing for a while
  4. Woo Hoo! I got on the scale this morning and I am 10lbs down. Still not happy not chewing but happy about the weight loss. I guess I will eat another popsicle. Thanks everyone.
  5. Just had my pre-op appt y'all, and after spending a decent amount of time reading all the wonderful info on this board, I'm feeling concerned/confused. I'm being banded next Thursday at Northwest Weight Loss Surgery in Everett, WA and we reviewed the post-op diet. I want to be succesful. I will follow what they tell me to do. BUT... ...they have recently revised their post-op to be: 1 week full liquids (which includes applesauce, yogurt, pudding), followed by 1 week of mushies (soft fish, scrambled eggs), then on to more solid foods. First fill at 4 weeks. I fully understand the need to have the band heal and settle in place. I'm seriously thinking of extending my phases to have an extra week of liquids and an extra week of mushies. I'll be damned if I move through things to fast just to cause issues down the road. Am I nuts??

    differences in pre-op requirements

Sounds like you are paying with insurance. I paid out of pocket for my surgery. The doc explained to me there are a lot of hoops to jump thru with insurance and also, if you are 50-75 lbs overweight they do not need you to lose weight. I had no pre-op diet or anything. I am only 60 lbs overweight though. When using insurance they need to document that you have "tried" losing weight and that this surgery is likely to work for you. Same with the smoking thing. Its all about insurance. If you were paying out of pocket none of this would matter and you would have the surgery without any requirements ( like me). It is an excellent choice, just know that it is a HUGE stuggle for many of us and as much as you read about wieght just falling off of some people.... thats not often the case. I have only lost 30 lbs in over 6 months.

    PCOS anyone?

Hi, There's a thread here for PCOS suffers that you should check out. I suffer from PCOS and Endometreosis. Since I've lost some weight with the band, my period has regulated itself and is no longer gut-wrenchingly painful. Actually, before I had surgery I had my cycle for over 6 months straight and nothing really regulated it, not even 2 d&cs last year. So to me, this has been a blessing. Follow the path below to find the section on PCOS. 8. NO REGRETS!!!! I was banded March 25,2006. I used to be a 40DDD bra. Now I'm a 36DD. Used to be a size 20, now a 12.Used to weight 250lbs now160lbs. Before I suffered from asthma, kneepain, backpain, shortness of breath and irregular heartbeats. And the well know syndrome: "WHAT THE HECK SHOULD I WEAR IF NOTHING FITS!!!!" every morning. Yep I too have some skin and boob "loseness" Oh but all of this is sooooo not important. Now I know my chances of "NOT" having a heart attack are better then before. Thank you Lord for second chances, for supportive people, for this new life!!!! Thank you for having a job and a roof over my head !!!!!! Well as you can see...no, no regrets here.
  9. I'm on week 3. My nut wants us to reach 600 calories a day. Today I aimed for 422. I am a bit under because I can never eat the entire portion besides yogurt in the am. I log everything on mfp, as best I can. I eat yogurt with protein powder for breakfast. Oikos triple. Mid morning i drink a protein shape boosted with protein powder. Late lunch i eat this lentil soup i made. High protein tofu, lentils, bone broth, carrots, onions, celery, garlic, spinach, 1 tsp olive oil for entire batch, fresh thyme Dinner: bibb lettuce, low sodium turkey breast, half a wedge of laughing cow My nut said to measure by volume (2oz cup or 1/4 cup). Not by weight. I weigh everything out to make sure i am hitting my protein goals. Oh and 2 SF popsicles

    Is anyone sorry?

If you don't read the complication threads you likely won't read that people have regrets. I had serious complications that almost killed me. I am left with a stomach so small we're talking about adding a feeding tube so I can take in enough calories to live. Yes I have major regrets. Stupidest thing I've ever done in my life. I know another woman who is facing a rare complication that is forcing her to gain weight or die. Seriously, she will die without gaining weight again. Another who has long term heart damage because of the surgery. Lots of regrets out there. IF you are having this surgery you need to be sure you understand that the risks are very high. The numbers are low but the risks are not simple little issues like an extra week in bed. They are life threatening in almost every case.
  11. Hello All, I had my vsg done on 01-17-11 so a mere 9 months ago and my new years resolution at the beginning of this year was to complete a half marathon. Yes running 13.1 miles on purpose is my goal for 2011. Well its official i finish my first half marathon today in Long Beach California. My official time was 2:25:35 which is a 11:07 average minute mile. My goal was to be under 2:30 and I made it with over 4 minutes to spare. I have always been envious of runners and my entire life I have wanted to be one. Never in my wildest bdream would I ever imagine that I would be running marathons (or should I say half marathons). I have never been this proud of my self ever and now I know that I am unstoppable once I put my mind to something. My next goal is getting to my personal goal weight which is 149 which is only about 11-12 pounds away, I am hoping to hit before my 1 year anniversary on January 17th. After that I want to conquer a full marathon which is 26.2 miles, I am thinking of Maui Hawaii in September 2012. If I believe it and I can see it then I can do it. I attached a couple of pictures from today. Thanks, Jenn

    Extreme Hunger Pains!!!

Hey- I'm just three days out and have heard my stomach growling, but no hunger pains as of yet. My protein shakes are finally running right through me so I think I need to up my water. Its so hard getting all my fluids, all my protein etc in. I've been off pain meds since yesterday. I just want to feel like my old self. I don't like not having energy. I've been gradually doing things around the house. Great job on your weight loss so far! Thats promising and inspiring! I've yet to get on a scale. Figured I would wait until my first appt. Keep me posted. We can do this!

    Soft diet recipe suggestions

Make sure you are not consuming artificial sweeteners like Splenda. They make you crave sugar and starch. Using will make you gain weight.

    Anyone live in San Antonio?

I have had trouble with my foot so my exercise has really suffered. Dr. D. says you are not limited on exercise at all, not even ab workouts. He suggested that I start lifting weights and doing nonweightbearing stuff because of my foot. I have not found the motivation to start this yet. I keep thinking about it but nothing happens, lol. I need a workout partner. where do you go the gym or workout? maybe we live or work close together and can do some things together. I belong to planet fitness and also to the Ymca but I might be cancelling that soon. Its pretty far for me to drive to. Let me know if you are interested that. I think we all need to be there for each other and I have no friends in San Antonio since I am new here relatively. It sounds like you are off to a good start. The amount of protein you can eat will increase as the weeks go by. I had a hard time getting enough in and I still do but it gets better when the volume gets a bit bigger. I can now eat ALMOST three ounces of fish. yay!

    Anyone live in San Antonio?

I am scheduled for plastics on November 20th. I am so excited about it! I know there are good docs in san antonio but they dont seem to have the experience I want in a surgery in weight loss patients.. we are sagging where normal people dont so I want that expertise. You will love Dr. D. and DR. Englehart is even better.. He assists in these surgeries and just came on board with BMI full time. He assisted with mine last year and I love him! I have only been to the ER at methodist specialty and transplant hospital. I had a kidney stone and they have equipment there. That was two weeks after my VSG. You can definately get to 138 if you want to! I didnt think it possible either but you can! Just eat your Protein first always. Thats what I did. I am bad with my Water though and I need to improve on that. I walked a lot after surgery to help myself heal and you feel so much better if you walk, I promise!!!! I did some zumba here and there and walked.. thats all I have really done. I did a few circuits but not much in the way of weight training. I just stuck to the protein first and low carb. When I dont eat low carb, I dont lose. I went though about two months maintaining and finally started really watching the snacking and carbs and I lost 7 pounds last month...even this far out! YOu can do this too!!!!!
  17. Thanks so much everyone for all the kind words and encouragement! Much better day today. Need to steer clear of sweets for a while and I did so successfully today. On another note, my weight dropped again.... Hmmm... trying not to use that as an "excuse" to eat poorly though. I think that is where I am getting hung up (partially) and allowing that thought to lead me to believe I can eat whatever I want because "look I am not gaining!" The unhealthy eating will catch up with me eventually though, so just gotta keep to a meal plan/calories for now and see how it goes before I decide to increase my calories again. Really appreciate all of you more than I can express!!
  18. Yes I'm ready !! More then ever ! To ready to wait over a year to have done, but I will do whatever it takes. I have health net HMO insurance. I went to my first doctors apt yesterday where my doctor informed me that i would have to see the doctor every month for 6 months to weigh in and also show them a journal of everything that I've eaten for that month. After that is completed then I need to see a dietitian, a psychiatrist and so on and so on...it can take up to a year and a half. Is It worth it ? I've been over weight all my life. I have tried sooo hard to lose it. Now that I'm a mother there are so many things that I want to do with my children that I don't have the energy to do, this brings tears to my eyes. So yes, it's more then worth the wait to be able to run and play with my kids. I'm very excited ! This website is wonderful ! I will keep everyone posted as to how everything is going concerning the lap band, insurance, doctors visits and so on...I would love to hear from you all. Thanks for your support ! xo-Anne

    Major Stall.... Ugh!

clk posted this a few days ago and I think it is brilliant. I hope she doesn't mind me reposting it and it helps you! I think too many of us focus on the fast losers when we're planning for surgery and then we assume that once we're sleeved the weight is going to just fly off. Not everyone is so lucky. My starting weight is close to your preop weight but you must be taller than my 5'1" and some change because my BMI was much higher at your current weight. I was a slow loser. Slower, I guess. There are a handful of people here that are even slower than I was. It took me 17 months to hit goal, to lose 107 pounds. You cannot compare yourself to everyone else. If you're doing the right things and still losing, the sleeve is working. You can try to adjust your food or exercise for a better result but I caution you against doing anything drastic that you won't be able to maintain. Part of why the sleeve is great is that it does away with the need for that diet mentality and helps you build positive habits you can maintain forever. Some folks cut the carbs down to 20 a day, something I consider extreme, but if they can live their lives that way and get great results then it works for them. My biggest piece of advice isn't one you'll like, but it's something you're going to have to get used to at some point or another. RELAX. That's it. Because this isn't a race. I promise you, 85% of your stomach just got removed from your body so you're going to lose weight. I see this over and over and over again on the boards - people just so frustrated and worked up because they expected to lose the weight faster, or people that get mad because they feel they didn't need the surgery if they were going to be slow losers. It took me 17 months to reach goal. It took me 17 YEARS to go from where I am now to my high weight. Am I any less pleased with my success because it took me longer to get here? Nope. I'm happy as can be. Track your food. Eat responsibly. Get your Protein in, drink your Water, start moving more. In six months you're going to be posting that you're nearly to goal. Give your body a chance to recover from the fact that it's lost 27 pounds and undergone a major surgery the last two months. And yes, even if you want to break the scale sometimes, and even if you don't lose for two weeks of the month (like me) you're going to lose this weight. So, RELAX. ~Cheri

    Scale Shopping

My scale measures body fat, lean muscle, Water, etc in addition to weight. It's a Tanita brand, got it from Amazon. It's the same brand my bariatric center uses, just not as big. I weigh second thing every morning (pee first) and record my weight. I record the fat, muscle and physical tape measurements just once a month.

    What was I Thinking?

When people say its a quick or easy fix, neither is true. I have been banded since 2006, and can tell you that if I would have worked this hard prior to the band I don't think I would have been so overweight. The band has been my lifesaver, because it has given me the extra push that I needed. But it is Work! You should start feeling better physically every day. But, you will go through a tons of ups and downs as far as emotions and weight go. Don't put a time line on anything, remember what one persons body does may not be the same for you. If you remember that it will make things easier. Good Luck and keep us informed on your progress.

    Lap Band vs Gastric Bypass

Actually, it is an excellent question to ask here because I was wondering the same thing. Sometimes I wonder if I should of waited out the list of gastric bypassers and just done that, but after weighing out the pro's and con's , i realized the good choice. Gastric bypass is quick, and it's great for people who want results fast, but then what happens when the weight comes back on? Your stomach stretches, it's not adjustable. Lapband comes off slowly, but in the end, the weight doesn't come back and even if it does, you can always adjust your band, which is great. In the end, the results will come and with both, the surgery is just a tool. It's just a matter of how patient you are. Plus, this is way safer.

    Scare of my Life

Maybe it's not related to your band at all - I'm not a doctor, and have no medical background, but it sounds a lot like how I felt with my gallbladder. I had gallstones about 7 years ago, well before I ever considered being banded. The only thing is that walking helped that pain subside. When I went to the ER, they told me I fit the 4F profile for gallbladder disease - Female, 40, fertile and fat. When it happened I had started losing a lot of weight, and they said that rapid weight loss contributed to it. If it happens again, I think I'd throw it out there as a possibility.
  24. HI Jewel: ( i edited this a littlle, I dont' think I fully explained what i meant) It is a great idea to get your self prepared as far as your diet it concerned. IMO I think it really gets us in a good mind space to prepare and not have to not make drastic changes only after surgery. When I got serious about surgery, I joined weight watchers (again) It kept me accountable and helped frame my mind for the changes to come, without being in a specific "pre-op" diet plan. I agree with Bufflehead (below) about not going into a drastic calorie restricted plan, but rather change your behaviors in preparation for the pre-op and surgery. I wound up losing almost 60lbs. between June and December. For your information... Here is a pdf of the diet plan my NUT gave me, pre-op through post. Stage 1-7.pdf
