Pity Party - Frustrated - Venting!

You are completely correct in your thinking. These are two very important steps - realising you have to work out how to make this work for you & then actually discovering what does work for you. I’m happy to share my experiences & what works for me, as do most on this forum, but there is no guarantee it will work for you. Our lives are different, our health needs are different, our food preferences are different, … Though trying aspects of what works for others is a good place to start. I weighed myself every day when I was losing too, still do almost every day & I do it for the same reason as you: accountability. In the past, I wouldn’t weigh myself I’f I thought I’d put on weight - if I didn’t see the numbers on the scales I could convince myself I hadn’t gained even if my clothes were tight. Complacency can be a slippery slope. We’ve all been there. I’ve lost weight so now I can relax my diet &/or reward myself with food treats. Finding another way to reward yourself for your weight loss successes (spa day, a new clothing accessory, new hair colour, a tattoo, …) can be helpful. I get a lot of satisfaction from discovering new non scale victories too like buying a smaller size, realising I’m the slim person in the mirror, my nieces & nephews sitting in an armchair with me, being able to put on tights or socks while standing up, etc. In the past, complacency lead me to regain any weight I’d lost. A big realisation for me was understanding that the changes I made to lose the weight have to be lifelong changes if I want to keep the weight off. Not just mouthing those words but actually enacting them. I try not to think of how I eat now as a ‘diet’ but just how & what I eat. I’m only two years out so I have a long way to go. Congratulations on your weight loss so far. Hope the rest goes just as smoothly for you.
  2. Thanks for your replies. I am trying on my own clothing from 6 years ago that I saved. They are just a bit tight all over even though I'm the same weight on the same scale. I do think my legs have lost more than my belly so maybe that will even out soon. I surely hope my body shape isn't too much changed.
  3. I think you lose weight in different places as you progress. You might lose more in your legs or your breasts first then your tummy or butt. Much like when we used to gain. I noticed that my previous hour glass shape became more straight up & down when I lost my weight & many things that used to fit well at my smaller size now didn’t. I had a lot of baggy ass pants in my wardrobe that fitted well at my waist. Thankfully as my body resettled my hour glass shape has returned somewhat. Clothing sizes have been ‘adjusted’ a lot over the last couple of decades too to allow for changes to body shapes: broader shoulders, heavier thighs & calves, larger breasts, etc. Plus of course the whole vanity sizing thing. Also don’t get me started on the irregularity of clothing sizes not only across brands but within the same brand. It’s one of the reasons I dislike shopping online - I don’t know what size to buy.

I haven't gotten as far with my weight loss, I'm on week 3. However I was thinking something similar about what my life will be like without food for entertainment and bonding with others... Like what is enjoyable in my world outside of food and how to keep my activities fun and consistent.(outside of fast food)[emoji30] thanks for sharing your thoughts, I definitely feel less alone! 5. Honestly, I don't know how it works. When I was in the 180's last time (when I was 12, almost 22 years ago) I wore a 16 in women's jeans. I'm a 12 in women's jeans at this weight right now. Honestly, I don't know why that is...
  6. I was actually prepared to make spontaneous plans to see my high school buddies on the 40 year anniversary of our graduation! I was ready to book the plane ticket and go, when they ended up re-scheduling due to other's conflicts. 80 pounds ago, I wouldn't have even considered going...even with 3 months to "lose some weight"! Now, I'm like "Tell me when and where, and I'll be there!" It felt great!!

    Cleaning up diet Pre Surgery

I've read about some people failing the psych eval and it's always baffled me. What is this psychologist looking for as a "pass/fail" sort of patient? Most, if not all, people who have struggled with weight maintenance and weight loss have an emotional attachment to food, yet it feels like that's what they're on the look-out for. What is it that "fails" someone at the eval, if you don't mind me asking?

    June Surgeries

I am scheduled for the 21st too! I started my pre-op a week early, as I need to be under a certain weight by my pre-op appointment on the 15th. I figure what I can do for two weeks, I can do for three weeks too. I have another 4 pounds to go before my weight in. Nights seem to be the hardest for me, as my mind wonders to worry/hunger/and a lot of what-ifs. During the day I am able to keep myself occupied and on a little schedule of when to drink my shakes and my alternatives. My doctor requires only liquids (no meals, no veggies, etc.) so I am little jealous of those that are able to have some variety. But, it is what it is. We got this!
  9. I’m so sorry you are going through this. I would talk to the doctor. This week I will be at three weeks post op. I stopped the omperazole less than a week after because I found I didn’t need it. I only had two bouts vomiting and I think one was because I hated what I was eating and the other one was because I wasn’t paying attention and probably did not chew well enough. My biggest issue is that I am picky and don’t like ground chicken or ground turkey and I miss vegetables more than I could ever imagine. My experience could be a bit different because I had a revision for my sleeve because I screwed it up and gained on my weight back. Good luck and I hope things get better for you soon

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

I had a similar experience in that nothing really gave me trouble during the purée/soft food/regular food stages. I am able to eat salad, chicken breast, raw veggies, etc with no problems at all about 7 months out, and have been able to for months. One thing that I really have been focused on is that my program gave me a surgery and a plan, and I need to stick to it as much as possible. My one piece of advice about 6 or so months ahead is to stick to your plan and try to avoid “testing” your surgery as much as possible. It’s a slippery slope, especially in the early weight loss phase.
  11. I'm happy to have gotten down to my wedding weight a little over 2 months post op but I'm noticing that clothing that I fit at the same weight is too tight requiring 5-10 more pounds loss before it fits the same (my guess). I am assuming this is because I might have less muscle and more fat than prior. If any of you experienced this how did you workout to remedy or were you not able to? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

    Worried loosing too FAST

I know that exact feeling. It is called Body Dysmorphia and rapid changes can have that effect on our brains. I am slowly coming to terms with it myself as I have lost 120 lbs since my highest weight. Even buying clothes was not easy for me at first because the fitting rooms were not open and I didn't buy clothes until the clothes I was wearing were basically falling off.

    Scale

Any scale recommendations? My scale is giving me numbers all over the place. I started around 330 pre op. Now that I'm below 300, I can't get a good number on my digital scale. My weight ranged from 295 to 277 this morning. I usually try to get numbers twice so I can get consistency, but that would be 277. Yesterday it was 288. I doubt I had 11 pound drop in a day. Advice? Skin removal surgery

not sure where you are in NC (I lived in NC for many years!), but there are several surgeons around the country who deal primarily (or exclusively) with massive weight loss patients who did their residences under Joseph Hunstad in the Charlotte area. I don't know of anyone who's actually gone to Dr. Hunstad for surgery, but since he's trained so many specialists, he may be one to take a look at, too. I just googled him - his website (hkbsurgery) is down at the moment also - check realself.com for reviews done by patients. They review all kinds of doctors, but most seem to be plastic surgeons.
  15. I’m 52 and post-menopausal. Since my surgery on 02/09/21 I’ve only lost 38 lbs. My surgeon only told me “it’s not a race” and to “keep up the good work “ but I feel like I should have lost more by now. Before surgery my weight was 275, SW was 242, current weight is 206. I’ve been stuck at 206 for almost a month now and am feeling very frustrated. I’ve read where post-menopausal women will lose at a much slower rate so I’m just chalking it up to that. Anybody else post-menopause having the same issues? FYI... I see a hormone specialist and all my hormones have been balanced to “normal.”

    Skin removal surgery

Thank you for sharing this information! This is very helpful. When I was living in NC I researched surgeons there but didn't find any that I felt would provide the results that I was looking for, just based on reviews that I had seen on their websites. I completed some very minimal research for surgeons within the US as well. I am excited about losing the rest of the weight and having skin surgery in the future. When I had my breast consult completed last year, the surgeon that I spoke with told me that ultimately I would need to also consider if I wanted to have any future surgeries before or after I have children because pregnancy can affect the results. However, I feel like because my skin has been stretched out from weight loss/gain over the years repetitively (especially in my abdomen area) if I were to get the skin removal surgery on my abdomen before I have children it will make a significant difference because the elasticity within the skin on will be reset to a certain degree, and there will not be as much stretching/sagging afterward. The breast surgeon that I completed the consult with told me that pregnancy could potentially cause my breast to become raised and plumper. He also recommended breast implants and provided me with the side effects and other recommendations that come with that surgery. I will definitely research the surgeons you have recommended to see which one will be the best option for me financially and will go from there. Thanks again for all of your help!

Worried, not losing 1 week post op

I looked gaunt when I reached my lowest weight (or as my uncle told my mother ‘like death’ ☹️) but a few months later I looked fine. I really believe too that things resettle in your body. You are doing well with your weight loss. Though it’s important to remind yourself that you’ll lose at your rate. Some people lose slowly, some more quickly. Both are the right way. But yes, unless your starting weight was in excess of 600lbs you’re not going to be losing the large amounts they do on that show to begin. And if you do watch that show, you’ll notice their weight loss slows the more they lose. Also during the surgery, they pump you up with gas & fluids & it can take days to rid your body of the excess. Add in if your constipated, & your scales may not go down & may even go up. (I had my gall bladder removed last week & when I got home 24hrs later I weighed almost 3kgs, about 6lbs, more. I lost about 2kgs in one day & another kilo over the next two days. I was peeing like a race horse & my bowels started working again.)

    Weight stall

My last stall also lasted almost 3 weeks & I was only about a kilo from goal. Super frustrating. I just stuck to my plan & that last kilo went. It is possible you could have reached your low point but don’t give up. Just wait it out for a few weeks & see what happens. If you want to lose more you either need to reduce your calories intake &/or increase your activity. Congrats on your weight loss.

Scared to stop losing going into puréed stage??

500 calories is 500 calories regardless of where the calories comes from. (500 calories is just a random number pulled from nowhere in particular.) If you eat a big piece of chocolate cake equal to 500 calories & nothing else for the rest of the day it is exactly the same as getting 500 calories from protein shakes. The difference is the quality of nutrients in those calories. Your body will burn the calories to function but it just won’t function well on the calories from the cake alone. As you slowly introduce real food you will slowly be consuming more calories but they are nutritionally dense calories which your body needs to function well & healthily. It’s important to monitor your food intake, portion sizes & calories consumed to ensure you’re following your plan & taking best advantage of your surgery. Your weight loss will slow as you progress. The glory days of the first weeks are just a kickstart. But every pound you lose is a win. Just watch the downward trend than the just numbers on the scale & celebrate all your non scale victories. Stalls happen. I liked to think of them as my body taking a breath to catch up with the changes. I know some people suggest cutting back your calories. I never did & my first stall only lasted a week. Your stall will end when it ends. Congrats on your surgery & good luck.
  20. This may seem like a strange question. I am just wondering if I need to make a special appointment with the bariatric psychologist on my team. I have lost now 60 pounds since the day of surgery RNY on February 24. Not quite 3 1/2 months yet. I feel like I’m losing weight too fast and I really don’t know how to cope with it. Everybody seems so excited and happy for me but I can’t wrap my brain around what’s happening. I did not do this for weight loss I did it for fixing severe Gerd so maybe that’s why I feel “weird”... I told my boyfriend that I just feel like I am in someone else’s body, lol 😂 The best way to explain this feeling is when something is too good to be true it almost feels skeptical - And you can’t let yourself be “happy”.... Has anybody else felt disbelief in the weight loss amount?!

    June Surgeries

I’m feeling much better than I anticipated. For me, the pain was not bad at all. If I was laying perfectly still, I could not feel a thing. The strongest pain meds I took were Tramadol and I only took those for the first 12 hours and then just at night for the first two nights. For me, the key was getting up and walking. Also getting my back pounded on to get rid of gas pains. I had a companion traveling with me but the patient staying in the room next door to me took advantage of the companion care and it was a really great experience. Out of towners all stay on the third floor of the hotel and you’ll see several walking the halls at all hours. Also the hotel rooms all have a section separate from the bed area that has sofa, etc. so there is some space. The visit from Nurses the evening after surgery for IV of fluids and anti nausea drugs was the best thing ever. I don’t know how long your journey home is, but I had two flights — 4 1/2 and then 1 hour — and I believe the timing was about right. It was really good to shower in my own bathroom and sleep in my own bed. my BMI was not as low as yours I think it was at 38, and I’m only 5’ 2” so I wasn’t expecting to lose much. I lost about five pounds from the time I started two week pre-op diet and the day before surgery. I was happy with that and as of today have lost a total of 10 pounds. WARNING - Blossom will weigh you the day after surgery when you go in for IV and final visit. I gained a pound but totally expected that because of all the IVs I got from surgery. feel free to ask any other questions and I’ll be happy to share my experience. So far it’s been great!
  22. I am 20 years post-op and have maintained my weight loss. I took all of the vitamins and B-12 but neglected the calcium. Well, after 5 broken vertebrae, collar bone and toe, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. 10 months ago I started taking calcium citrate and extra D3 twice a day, and daily injections of Tymlos, I am close to normal with bone density. TAKE YOUR CALCIUM and VITAMINS!!!!

Worried, not losing 1 week post op

also, I don't think most patients end up with a sick look. Some do, but I don't think most of us do. And like I said, most patients never even make it to normal weight let alone get too thin - they end up "overweight" or "class I obese" (which is, of course, infinitely better than being super morbidly obese....). Here's me at my lowest weight - and where my body naturally stopped losing. I was at a normal BMI (still am), which if you'll look at stats, only 10-15% of WLS patients are able to make it to. So there'd be a pretty small percentage of people become too thin - smaller than the 10-15% who make it to a normal BMI. Again, yes, some - but chances of that are pretty low. I'd focus on losing as much weight as you can during the early months - but of course, while eating according to your plan. You need the nutrition.

Worried, not losing 1 week post op

I agree with others that you are doing great. 14 pounds of weight loss in two weeks is incredible. I have only lost 25 in 12 weeks but I am still steadily losing. Idk your starting BMI but based on your weight you are somewhat lower BMI and weight loss will be slower than those with higher BMI’s. Several people on here have said that they continued to lose weight for like two years so the important thing is not how fast you lost it Just the overall trend downwards. Just hang in there you will lose it.

I would be very careful with smoothie king. I think their smoothies usually have lots of sugar and juice, both of which are not good for weight loss. Also, make sure the chicken strips don't have breading/aren't fried. And many people look a bit "drawn" after they lose a lot of weight but you'll see from people on this board that their weight tends to settle over time. Make sure that the nutrients you're getting are from real food rather than commercial smoothies or you check to make sure there are no sugars or fruit juices in the smoothies.
