    1st day post-op

I had my surgery on Tuesday. I'm three days post op. Totally, agree, the worst pain has been the gas. My problem is (and forgive the graphicness), but I constantly feel like I have to burp but when I try, I can't get it out. Any tips?
  3. @@jhclikesshopping@gmail.com thanks for the advice, I was stuck! I think maybe I've been eating the wrong things and that's why I'm at a weight loss stall, but I know where to go from here!
  4. Hello all, My surgery is scheduled for May 27th and it seems I will need to travel for work on June 4th (that is one week after surgery!) I will be traveling to the west coast for about a week. I want to hear from you all, experienced bandsters, if you think this is doable or not. Please share your thoughts. Thanks a lot!!
  5. Hi Sunflower: If you can take a nap each afternoon you'll be okay. Otherwise you'll probably be exhausted. I was even though I was on an at home vacation for first two weeks. It's also hard to stick to all liquids unless you're not eating socially for a while. Take care. Sue

    Pre Op Diet??

Hi again, I found this & thought some of us might be interested? (here's where I saw it:http://www.bospa.org/Information.aspx?Page=19) Pre-op liver reduction plan Just because you are awaiting a surgical treatment for your morbid obesity, this is not an excuse to sit back and gorge out on as much food as you can! Any weight you can lose through dieting before your surgery is an advantage - it will make the surgery easier and will reduce the risks associated with it. Some surgeons mandate a very restricted diet - one that is low in fat, sugar and carbohydrates - for one week prior to surgery and even if your surgeon doesn't ask you to follow this diet, doing so will increase your chances of your operation being completed laparoscopically because it will shrink your liver down in size. By following a strict diet, your body reduces its glycogen stores (glycogen is a form of sugar stored in the liver and muscles for energy). With each ounce of glycogen, the body stores 3–4 ounces of Water, so when you follow a very strict diet, especially one that is low in starch and sugar, your body loses its glycogen stores and some water. The liver shrinks as it has less glycogen and water in it. This diet is only recommended for one week before surgery and is not to be followed post–operatively. It is quite possible you lose a lot of weight that week, but it will be mainly be water loss. Please ensure you continue to drink throughout the day. Here are some menu suggestions: Breakfast Small bowl of Cereal, or 1 slice of toast with a scraping of low fat spread lunch 1 slice bread or 2 crispbreads Small portion lean meat or fish, or Small portion cheese, or 2 eggs (not fried) Green salad (no dressing) or tomatoes dinner Small portion lean meat or fish, or Small portion low fat cheese, or 2 eggs, or Tofu or Quorn based dish 1 small potato or 2 tablespoonfuls Pasta or rice Vegetables (as many as you like except for root vegetables) Daily 1/3 pint milk for use in drinks and on cereal 2 portions of fruit (e.g. apple, orange, banana, pear) Free water, tea, coffee, low calorie squash or fizzy drinks 1 low fat, low sugar yogurt or fromage frais

    Tuna Never Tasted So Good.

LOL, I had the same thing this week for my first pureed meal and I agree with you about the taste. It was my first real meal since July 30th!
  8. After two weeks liquid diet, surgery on Tuesday and a couple of days not being able to eat at all.... Today is the start of my pureed diet. I had 1/2 cup yogurt at breakfast. And lunch I had 2oz tuna and 2oz. Mixed veggies pureed. All I can say is canned tuna never tasted so good. I'm glad I can keep food down. Dr did fill me a little at the time of surgery so it does take about an half hour to 45 minutes to eat. The wait has been worth it. Also I got really sleepy after eating, anyone else experience this?

    Pre Op Diet??

I second the previous poster. I have heard about so many different variations. Personally, I have to do 4 weeks of Optifast starting 12/26.

    February

Whoever said "It's always darkest before the dawn" must have had February in mind. It's a bleak and dreary month, here in the frozen wasteland that is the Middle of the Mitten. February broods over a grey/white landscape, sending alternating waves of sub zero cold and just above freezing slush attacks. The February land is awash with dull sloppy half ice, and a stark and angry sky as grey as ashes, as grey as death. Here life waits, suspended, somewhere between true winter and a faint promise of spring. February is the angry month, short and sullen, when daylight is as rare as diamonds, and shines like gold. Here and now I find myself, at 306 pounds au naturale, about three twelve when decently clad. Fifty six pounds down from my starting weight. Respectable. I can feel it slowing, and as the stress of my life, and the blahs of winter take hold of my spirit, I quietly rejoice that I have my band. I eat. I over eat. I eat unwisely. Too fast. Too much. Too often. Yet now I have a gentle and forgiving friend who stops me short. The band controls my body, and gives me the chance I need to control my mind, and my mental hunger. And it is helping. Each day there is some victory, however small. I can forego the cherry crisp at work, and only eat the lean turkey. And I rejoice that it's okay. The siren song of food grows less intense. Yes, there are times it flares. There are times that chocolate sings my name, so gently, so sweetly...........no lover could call me softer. But, sometimes, just sometimes, I win. One victory is more than I ever knew pre band. Now I stack them up. Several a day. Many in a week. Not all steps are foreward. Yet not all travel is backward. Sliding down a slippery slope of fat while I throw comfort in my pie hole with both hands, every moment of every day, is now a thing of the past. However good or ill I do in this journey, I have improved on the old me. We're not working on a better body. We're not working on a healthier lifestyle. We're trying to journey to a better us. And all this drivel, this diarrhea of words, leads up to my next weapon loaded into my arsenal. Thursday I get a fill. Yippeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Stall

I hit a stall every month no worries!!
  12. Had conversion from band to bypass on 12/9, had to go back in for lower intestinal constriction surgery on 12/14 and spent 3 more nights in the hospital. When I got out of the hospital, I weighed 180 (25 pounds lost on milk diet and during hospitalization of a total f 7 nights). One month later I weigh about 179. I do get about 80-90 grams of Protein, drink plenty Water, exercise, light weigh-lifting at gym,and I am eating regular food now, which I carefully measure. Calorie intake of 800-900 per day. Tracking everything. So...never get sick, never feel nauseous, never feel like I have hit capacity, even with just plain 2-3 oz. chicken or tuna. I read somewhere that my pouch will be bigger than normal because it is a conversion. I hold myself to about a 1/2 cup + a very small amount of soft vegetables per meal. I typically am not hungry, but I have no problem eating and am diligent about getting protein in. Also, all Vitamins. BUT I feel like the surgery didn't work because I am not having a "full" feeling, not feeling nauseous like others report, and can consume at least a 1/2 cup or better with no problems. I know others may think I am crazy to complain about no symptoms, but it makes me worried that I will not lose weight, even though I feel like I am doing everything right, and it has been about a month now with no loss. Has anyone out there gone through the same level of "stall"? Any similar experiences where loss does finally come?

    170, 50 down

I have had my belly ring for 8 years...so its not new. I have had no problems though. I do work out 4-5 days a week. I have always loved the gym, now my hard work can be seen!
  14. So happy to read this post! I just posted yesterday asking about hunger. That is exactly how I feel. I eat this very small meal, feel like I can't eat another bite and 1-2 hours later I feel hungry. My surgery was 5 weeks ago so I am hopeful it will change. Thanks for posting Diane

    anybody own a vitamix substitute?

The blendtec takes the place of all three! Check it out at blendtec.com. It is pricey but worth it. You will never need another machine.

    Terrified Of Eating Out!

Loved eating out before and after my sleeve (was also banded for almost 4 yrs prior to revision). I may get blasted for this but I eat whatever I want. Anything and everything. The only thing I've found is a no no is ice cream. Im a slow learner so I've tried it 5x and every single time I get stomach cramps. The last time I was begging God to get me thru it and Id never eat ice cream again. I still eat burgers Iabout 1/3 of an In and Out Burger), pizza (1/2 normal slice), tacos (3/4 of a Del Taco chicken taco), sandwiches (1/3 of a small Quiznos sub), and buffets (yes, I said it, a buffet). Thank God I can only eat a small amt of food (maybe 6-8 bites of any given meal) so I'm slowly losing. That was my goal of wls, to never diet again. Not eating certain foods seems like dieting to me. Every restaurant (even greasy spoons) has something on there u can eat. I just noticed that ur only 4 weeks out. That changes everything. Forget what I just said (not really, otherwise I would've edited it ) I was still on full liquids at 4 weeks. While I did eat out a few times during this time, it wasn't as easy as it is now (4 mths post). Any restaurant will blend a soup for u (Red Robins clam chowder is yummy thru a blender) and if ur really adventurous, u can ask for anything put thru the blender. They may not recommend pizza in the blender but if ur willing, why not? Like I said, I luv eating out. I eat out 4-7 times a week. Brunch is my fav meal out. Good luck to u
  17. I didn't have anything previously but had a sleeve on May 31. I was so bloated the first week and a half from the surgery. You'll need to let your body adjust a little after surgery there's allot of inflammation from surgery that causes your body to hold water initially. That's probably why you haven't seen a big loss yet. Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app

    Stall At Day 11

I'm right there with you guys! Day 18 and I haven't really lost anything in a week!
  19. Had to go to 2 work dinners this week and was so anxious about the whole thing. Checked the menu in advance to make sure there was something I could eat at this stage. 1st place was fine but 2nd place had a limitied menu so had to order an entree and nibble on the mashed potatoes. Was anxious about eating so little, eating slowly and in both instances taking most of the food home, thankfully no one noticed/said a thing. It kinda made me sad to see people eating burgers, bread, having desert and not being able to eat. I mean I didn't want it but felt sad. I now dread eating out and don't think eating out socially will be fun anymore.

    Hunger after surgery

Maurdan I Was So Excited About Being Banded That I Didn't Even Think Of Food For The First Week. Actually I Was The Best With Exercise Also Because I Felt Like I Had A New Toy. It Was Much Easier After Surgery Than Before. I Was Starving Just Before Surgery On The Liquid Diet. But Like Flabuless Said Above It Does Truly Depend On The Person. Good Luck To You And Keep Us Posted.

    Hungry post op

In the same boat. My husband cooks for the kids and I have to see/smell macaroni, pizza, pasta, and cereal. I have chewed a few items and later spit. I'm also a good week away from pureed foods. You can do this!
  23. I am not sure what the "HP" is, but I was on the Optifast diet for 14 days before my surgery back in June '07. I wasn't sure I could make it through two weeks either but I surprised myself. I lost 22 pounds in the two weeks. I did buy more vanilla than anything and mixed it with ice and diet soda (before soda became a no-no). I particularly liked it mixed with orange or root beer. I also had a choice of Garden Tomato soup in the Optifast. It became a treat for me. I still buy some occasionally to keep my protein up. My surgeon's office let it slip (not the surgeon) that it was okay to eat carrots, celery, and berries during the time when it was the toughest. I don't know how "legal" that is for most surgeons, but it made it easier to get through. My sister was banded two months later and used the same philosophy. She lost 17 pounds during the phase. I wish you luck. I am sure you will be happy you did it and it will be a distant memory soon. Take care! Cindy

Need to eat more (women only)

I stall during my period. Then about 4 days afterwards, I drop all at once. Oddly, I am really NOT hungry at all during my period and tend to fall back on protein shakes to make sure I get something in.
