  1. You hit it on the nail.......self destructive. For some it's alcohol, drugs, sex, and then for others it's food. It's about that mindset and it was clear to me that Pauline needed some serious counseling...probably lifelong....prior to surgery. Sometimes you have to see your behavior in others in order to get "it", I know that's what worked for me.....straight up, frank, & clear examples. That is what keeps my tail in line.

    December Surgeries!?!?!?

I am a pooping machine... Ugh.! Trying to figure out this last week which med, food, what exactly is making me shoot out whatever I put in. Because frankly, it's starting to make me feel not so nice.;( I think it may be sugar alcohols in the Popsicles but not sure yet. That'd be great to be sensitive to sugar substitutes wouldn't it?! Grr. I'm done b*#%^ in, down ten pounds so that's a good thing but I sure don't want to cramp/poop out the other 70 for cripes sake. hanging in there. How's everybody?

    Any one in NW WA

Yep... like once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. I had my 5th fill last month. I'm a little uncomfortable every time I eat... sometimes more than a little. But I don't think I need an unfill, I just need to quit eating as soon as I feel that "full" feeling and stop trying to stuff in just a few more bites, sometimes (I think) to please my DH who prepared the food! Which is really stupid because he's happier if I quit with food still on the plate. Then I sit here popping Papaya tablets until the misery passes.

    Alcohol

How far out did you consume your first alcohol beverage ? How was your experience? (Not here to judge each other, but to learn from each other’s experience)

Were is all my Chattanoogians at?

They feel for the port then clean the area with alcohol or betadine. Then they insert the needle (it is much larger than I thought but it doesnt hurt just kind of stings). I think this is when they insert the fluid. They then have me get up with the needle still in and stand in front of the flouro or xray. They then have me drink barium which is strawberry flavored I think and watch it to make sure it goes through. I then drink a sip of water to make sure it stays down and then you are done. It only takes about 3 minutes. No biggie.

    Five Month Post Op Stall

I feel you. I have read that a few week stall was normal. Most everyone seems to have them. I too went into a LONG stall at about 5 months out from surgery. Had surgery in May and the last time I really lost any good amount of weight was Oct. I stalled, then spoke to my nutritionist in Dec, made some adjustments then lost like 3.7 in January but haven't lost again since! That's like only a 3.7 lb loss in about 5 months!!!! CRAZY!! You MAY be able to explain your stall away because you have been indulging in foods more off plan (chips, diet soda, etc), but I haven't even been doing that! I have not had any other drink but for water since last March! But for the occasional alcoholic drink (like once a month). So yeah, your guess is as good as mine. You can read more about my issues (if you want) in my thread that I have going. Explains more about what has been happening, my exercise routine, etc. Hopefully you will get things moving again soon. Maybe cut out those foods and see if that helps? I also suggest speaking to your nutritionist. They may be able to help you get yourself back on track. Are you tracking your food?

    September Bandsters

Hi ya'll, Today's my six month bandiversary! I'm down 82 lbs. in 6 months, and life is so much richer than it was pre-band. I have so much more energy. I used to dread going to Walmart, and if I missed something in the non-food section after I'd moved on to the groceries, I'd skip it until the next time. Even so, I was exhausted when I got home, and my feet ached all the time. Now, the only punishment I get from shopping is my aching Am Ex! I've chalked up many, many "non-scale victories" in the past six months: ** I'm off of 3 prescription meds ** My plantar fasciitis is essentially gone ** I'm down from a size 26 in pants to a size 16 ** I see and *reach* every area of my body. I kid you not, I can even scratch between my shoulder blades! ** I used to be addicted to TV, and now I'm addicted to exercise. ** I was concerned about the amount of alcohol I used to drink pre-band, and I now am a relatively normal "social" drinker (2-3 drinks once a week or so). ** I can cross my legs. ** I can tie my shoes standing, with feet flat on the floor. There are probably many more that I can't think of right now. But, basically I'm in love with the band, and love life!! This week, I'm down two pounds, and exercised 5 days. Gotta run...spin class in 25"! Tami

    June 2006 Band Crew

Hey Leecee, I spent the weekend with my BF from San Jose, and we were in San Francisco also for an entire day, walking those hills, and riding the cable cars. I wonder if we passed each other and didn't even know. I was thrilled to weigh in this morning and learn I am .2 pounds from onederland. That motivated me to get out on a walk this morning. My anxiety levels are through the roof though. Shouldn't that increase my metabolism? Anyone have any ideas for relieving that panicky feeling without eating or drinking alcohol? I used to be on anti-depressants, which can help, but the ones that work also mess up your sex drive, and I'd like to avoid that.

    Whine....

Ok, so I know that any alcohol is really just empty calories. But, how long should I wait after surgery to drink? My nutritionist recommended straight vodka on ice - funny, huh? I have some friends' birthdays coming up and would love to attend happy hour and have a drink!

    I Need Everyones Opinion....

Hi All, Well i have a little dillema...:confused2:I am getting my band May 12th. I have ran into a speed bump though. My husbands 2 best friends are having a birthday party this saturday. Apparently i cant eat anything and i cant drink (alcohol):rolleyes2:...I would have loved to go but it just doesnt sound like ANY fun due to my issues. I told my husband this and he got all upset about it. :angry:I told him to go by himself and he said no, i want you to go...so i said okay ill go but i do NOT want to be there for very long. He got upset with that but dealt with it..i guess:glare:. So i am going to this party with 25yr old single men who are going to be getting drunk with their skinny rude girlfriends and they are going to be wondering hmmm why is victors wife not eating or drinking?:blushing: I dont want to tell them i am having WLS...maybe i dont want to tell them b/c i dont want to embarrass myself:sneaky:. (He doesnt want me to have the surgery bc he loves me not matter what even if i have 13 fingers:lol:). I really dont know what to tell them. Can anyone help me think of something to tell them...i dont want them to think im being rude and i just dont want to be around them. ( i really dont bc of my surgery) Really confused and frustrated:incazzato: Mandi Jo

    A Sad Milestone

Check with the universities in your area... the one near me offers free counseling with psych majors, as part of their educational requirement. You do need to beat the alcohol habit, and ensure that what you take into your body is worthy of feeding the goddess in your temple. You deserve to be treated well... especially by you!

    A Sad Milestone

Just so I'm hearing this right, you are replacing one addiction with another addiction. So now is the best time to get your S*** together and stop with these unproductive behaviors. I wish you could see a therapist for help, that is highly advised. You said your BF doesn't know you had the surgery? How could he not know. How did you explain the incision scars to him? This is a great time to sit down with him and tell him what's going on and ask for his help in getting back on track. Eat protein, protein, protein, no alcohol, no carbs, lean low fat foods with some veggies. You can do this1 Make healthy eating your new addiction and focus on small portion size. Please keep us informed.

    Calling all April Bandsters!!!!

Mom that's awesome! Congrats Say Hello to sipping Water again! Good morning all! For those that didn't catch it the first time check out http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f17/what-have-you-lost-44347/ this threads has a list of things and what they weigh. I have lost an ELEPHANTS PENIS no joke.. Jeez I bet their backs hurt alot Sounds like the chat room here now jk On a serious note i do have a question and will probably spend time looking it up today. It's not secret that I like to have a glass of wine. Well even knowing the horrible amount of salt and calories in a margarita I have tired to have them a few times at my favorite restaurant... What happens immediately after taking the first sip its like the band instantly tightens up. Sometimes I can have the glass and sometimes it makes me slime and I have to put it away. Even when I was open enough and was eating breads and stuff it would instantly lock me up.. Sounds weird but I have experimented a few times to see if it was the time of day the situation the drink etc. It seems to me most alcohols. Any idea?

    June Post Ops!

So i went out with friends last night. Amazing time. I have had alcohol in the past wine makes me a little tipsy, beer just makes me full... Last night we had a cream type wine and some shots before we went to the bar. OMG I didn't know if I was going to be able to walk down the stairs to the car! I'm such a light weight now. It was a fun tipsy feeling and once I was at the bar I switched to water. Danced for 2 hours and had a blast! One of my friends said I looked like a cute little barbie doll last night. haha made my night!

  16. @@K-Lynn, I have had elevate liver enzymes as well. It depends on whether it is AST or ALT and how far they are elevated. They would have to be insanely elevated to consider a diagnosis of cirrhosis (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). When mine were elevated, my doc just said watch what you eat, get plenty of fluids, and check again in six weeks. Six weeks later it was normal. So don't let just one test tell the whole story.
  17. No, my dad died of non alcoholic cirrhosis which turned into liver cancer and I have fatty tissue liver disease. The sleeve will actually greatly reduce any liver issues so even if there is a problem (which there could be no problem at all and your counts are just off) the surgery will help. My liver doc says I should be good as new in two years. So, not a medical professional, just saw my dad go through it for six years and have had my own personal struggles. Glad you are seeing the doc - I'm sure it's nothing. And, if it is, you just took a great step to making it better by getting the surgery.

Suggest you clean your wounds gently with sterile Water / alcohol wipe or similar, and replace the bandages with steristrips (3M make them, ask your pharmacist) for a week or so. Put the steristrips on so that they run perpendicular to the wounds. They will provide some support to help hold the newly knitting wounds together, yet still keep the wound clean and allow it to breathe and dry out. If your wounds are infected (inflamed, oozing, etc), or you are at all worried about them, go and see your local doctor.

Ok one more question, and this one is really dumb.... So whats the fill supposed to do? Make my pouch smaller so I hold in less food and feel fuller? Or just make the opening smaller so less will go in? Cause if thats the case- I think I might end up eating more junk food. I wonder what kind of eating disorder i have! Anyone know? Dont get me wrong though- I dont sit here and pig out all day..... heres a daily recap= up until 3 pm- I try and get all the liquids in I can. I will try a few spoons of a yogurt, or 100 cal pudding, or Jello. After 3- its useally a Lean Cuisine and then later around 7pm I can eat popcorn, candy and Ice Cream. A nice size bowl of Ice Cream too. And then thats eat. Now to me- thats a drastic decrease in food cunsumption. I used to eat fast food 3x a day! Plus the junk food and Alcohol. My cal intake before lap Band was about 6,000. Maybe even more. So now its like, whats the normal amount that I should be happy with? I thought that Lap Band ment I should be able to eat 1/3 of my meal and be full. Or is it eat a 1/3 of calories from what you used to eat? Does anyone else seem to be having a rough time mentally with understanding that its ok to just eat such small portions? ~Raynie!

    October 2006 Bandsters!

Exactly what I was told. Although we both have Australian doctors, so they might have the same training background... My surgery centre really stressed that they need us to be on the pre-op diet for the last 2 weeks pre-op. They say it will be the last diet we will ever be on! YAY! Our pre-op diet is based on medical Meal Replacement products. It has choc or vanilla shakes, chicken Soup, choc mousse, choc bars and choc berry bars. Some variety in the textures, but it all tastes pretty much the same weirdness. To that we can add 2 cups of non-starchy vegetables (NO carrot, potatoes, peas (other than snow peas), Beans (other than mung beans), carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato etc), 1 piece of fruit per day (limited selection, eg. apple, pear, orange, strawberries, pineapple), diet jelly, diet soda, herbal tea, and some basic herbs and condiments. Absolutely no alcohol or caffeine is allowed. I'm basically having one of the shakes for breakfast; a salad and a bar for lunch; fruit for afternoon tea; stir-fry, grilled or soup veggies for dinner; a bar or dessert and diet jelly for supper. Plenty of herbal tea and Water in-between, and just the odd diet soda if I feel like one. So far the pre-op diet's generally not that bad. I'm on day 5 of the diet today - a bit hungry today, as I had my "special lunch" :hungry: with the girls yesterday, and I guess I'm getting over that. Day 3 was also hard, I got really grumpy and cold. I thought it was because of the heavy gardening work that I was doing, but TOM arrived yesterday, so it was probably that making me grumpy (usually that would have been fixed with chocolate! LOL!). Thank goodness it came now and not when it was due (on surgery day).:clap2: Different surgeons have different methods of working, or have different view of the relevant research and literature. I think that my surgery centre is very conservative in terms of pre and post op diet requriements, but less conservative in other ways. As long as the outcomes and recovery are good, that's all that should matter. Good luck to all as we count down the last few days until 1 October! Let the banding begin!:clap2: :clap2:

    November Dates

I know others are saying that she's jealous, but I think its actually that some people have NO concept of what its like to battle with their weight. Like my Surgeon was saying, for some people food just doesn't 'do it' for them, and those people have no idea and no sympathy for the struggles we have gone though. I dont think she is going to be a very supportive person in your life, and honestly would consider dropping the relationship, because she could seeth like a toxic swamp and ruin any good feelings you have. My 'best friend' last night said something that really hurt me. I was talking about how another friend came over and bought pizza one night and Lagsane another night to eat in my house in front of me and how insensitive that was. She told me to 'suck it up'.... seriously, If I was an alcoholic and someone brought over a bottle of wine to drink in front of me would she react the same?? It made me really really angry

    🍂 Nov 2019 Challenge🍂

Day 17: What about your job are you most grateful for? I am grateful for my job as a pediatric nurse/nurse practitioner because it has been such a rewarding and sweet career. I can think of so many special people and moments that I have been privileged to share over the past 37 years with the wonderful kids and families that I have worked with. Sure, there have also been some sad, stressful and heartbreaking moments as well but those have made me develop skills to be helpful in those situations. I could not imagine anything else being my life's work. It is truly a blessing to take care of kids. How are we doing Team? Mostly okay except for failing on exercise due to the frigid temperatures (not a valid excuse because I have a nice elliptical and a weight bench within 5 feet of where I am sitting🙄) and overindulgence in alcohol. A few minor slip ups with food...I have lost about 2# since the challenge started. Need to do better.
  25. Thank you! It is the kind of support I need! Just having someone to help me understand at least. I've been through all kind of appointments since August 2016, and my last meeting with the nutritionist was 2 weeks ago, and nobody mentioned anything about the weight gain. I'm on day 6 of the liquid diet, which only allows me 3 Protein shakes a day, broth, tea, and some green veggies with no oil or dressings. And I've done it perfectly!! I'm very proud of myself because it has not been easy at all, but I'm so excited and committed to this. I asked to meet with the surgeon tomorrow, but they seemed pretty sure about their decision. I'm going to try anyway. It's very unprofessional and heartbreaking for me to hear that I've made it this far to not know now of a date. Thank you again for your support. It feels good to let the frustration out. At least I know now that I can use this forum groups for support instead of using food and alcohol when things go the wrong way and I'm filled with anxiety
