Aerobic Exercise vs Weight Training? HELP?!?

If I had to do this over again I would spend way more time doing weights - I am the poster child of overemphasizing one of your two choices. I went with cardio only. Sure, I have impressive weight loss on my ticker at the bottom but the price I'm paying for that is loss of strength. I put 150lbs on a bench press machine like I used to do years ago when I was doing both weights and cardio and I couldn't budge it! I found that I could only do a fraction of it. There are probably lots of people here that could speak more definitively on this but I believe your weight loss isn't going to slow that much by lifting weights AND frequent body fat measurements as well as measuring yourself will show that the sleeve is working for you. Thanks for your honestly. I also really appreciate your links in your quote! Eyeroll? Something you didn't like? I'm thinking maybe she misquoted you? Perhaps wrong thread??? I'm hoping. You're probably right, but I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

    Hello!!

35 lbs is something to be proud of!! As you know, the weight doesn't just fall off. I don't know about you, but I have battled weight pretty much my whole life and this has defiantely been a life changing event for me. My friends and family are all in "aw" about my change too. Thank you for your response so quickly.
  4. My surgeon requires me to me a 2 week liquid diet (His offices uses Optifast, which I actually really like - some of the bars are super tasty). I'm on my second day of full Optifast - 4 shakes and 1 bar a day, plus broth and jello if I want. I was also told I needed to lose about 10% of my body weight before surgery, so while I was doing all my pre-surgical testing, I was doing Optifast 'lite' (2 shakes a day, 1 bar, a meal consisting of 4-6oz of protein and 3 servings of veggies. (But no peas, yams or potatoes) I was also allowed 1 serving of fruit OR yogurt, and all the jello and broth I wanted. So far I lost 14lbs, and I expect to lose another 10 by my surgery date, which is almost the 10% (I started this all at 264lbs) I think that starting the diet before the 2 week liquid was a big help. I've cut back on most of my cravings, and I think its a good way to prepare for learning to eat well after surgery. The two weeks of liquid should shrink the liver and such to make the surgery easier and safer. Lol, I was doing so well on the Opti-lite, but as soon as they said to start on full liquid, I have a massive craving for a chimichanga! But its passing.
  5. The VSG procedure has been the best decision of my life (other than marrying the love of my life). It is truly up to me how successful the surgery will be. The numbers on the scale went steadily down and I felt that there was no need to exercise, but when I saw the numbers level off, I had to admit that exercise is a big part of this journey. 10, 15, or 20 minutes a day makes a big difference....and it is so much easier to move. Besides this website and the Big Book on the Gastric Sleeve, I rely heavily on my fitness Pal and my fitbit. These tools really keep me in check as far as nutrition, how much I move in a day and my weight. I think if I had started an exercise regimen earlier, I would probably be another 10 lbs. lighter already. So I am looking forward to the spring weather to motivate me. My Dr. told me that My goal should be to lose another 35 by my surgiversary and I am determined to meet that goal. These forums are so motivating and inspirational to me and the challenges such as the Easter challenge really help to keep me in the game. Thanks to everyone for all of your posts, comments and advice.
  6. Way to go! I believe exercise is a key component in successful weight loss. Not just because it burns calories, but it also helps prevent muscle loss as your body loses weight. I know that my weight loss wouldn't have been as good if I hadn't been exercising on a regular basis. I had to find ways to continue burning calories at the same rate as I was right after surgery. Since I wasn't carrying around the extra weight, my body didn't have to work as hard to get around. I've only done walking as my primary exercise, but I do vary it up by going to walking tracks and park trails. I like a variety of hills and obsticals to keep things from getting boring. Back in October, I started wearing a backpack with a few books in it for added weight then got a weighted vest in November. The vest had the added benefit of working my core and leg muscles in a new way. It's hard to make a sharp turn with a 20 lb vest. :-P

  8. Hi, I'm Traci and was re-banded on Friday, Jan 16, 2009. I was originally banded in 2003 and lost about 80lbs...I had band slippage in 2006 and gained all my weight back...so I decided to have the band hooked back up! I am in alot of pain, but it's getting better every day!! I just wanted to say hello!

    High protein HELL!!

Well, you wont get any arguments from me that high Protein diets can be hell. Its not a way I care to eat at ALL. I also get nauseated from heavy protein meals, and shakes and protein products like bars never fail to give me very offensive gas - "protein farts" are quite a recognised phenomenon if you google it, lol. But - are you including lots of berries and leafy green vegies to flesh out your diet and provide some fibre? I hardly think breaking out and eating watermelon is such a crime. But the trouble is that pre op diet is meant to shrink the liver and carbs have to be restricted to ensure all the glycogen in your liver is used up. So like it or not, its something you have to stick to. But if its any hope to you, I've never done a high protein low carb diet since surgery, never drank Protein Shakes or avoided bread and Pasta, I lost plenty of weight and I lost it easily.

It wasn't till I noticed that I wasn't losing weight, I wasn't gaining but I wasn't losing, Ur body gets use to eating so fast, u really need to be strict with urself! Thats what I'm doing now, its very very hard but I just don't want to go back to how i was!

    My Souper You Makeover

You look incredible ! Congrats on the weight loss and winning the makeover
  12. Hi! Haven’t made any personal posts in some time… I’m one week shy of my bandiversary, 5/19/11. I went from 349 pounds down to 202.8 (-146.2). I arrived at my lowest in December and haven’t lost anymore. I have maintained or stayed between the same 5 pounds since that time. My ultimate goal is to get to 165 and maintain and I know I’ll get there… Here’s my dilemma…I’ve been bingeing on slider foods for the past few weeks and I put on 10 pounds!!! It’s always been really easy for me to gain or lose weight…. Since losing weight and for the most part, ceased from abusing food (until recently) I’ve had to deal with my problems like a normal person. If I don’t drown my issues with food then I have to feel/deal with them and they hurt L…I guess it’s new for me because I never dealt with these issues in the past, I just kept eating them away. Being super obese made me invisible from the opposite sex and now that I’m visible – I’ve been putting myself out there…but with that comes a lot of self esteem issues…I think a lot of bad thoughts about myself if a guy doesn’t reciprocate feelings or attraction to me…this sucks but I’m trying to deal with it… In the meantime I’m over here stuffing my face and getting depressed… Please, if anyone understands and can over any words of encouragement I really need something to click for me… Thanks…. Rebecca (feeling lost and alone)

    Sore muscles?

I too have joined Curves and I thought I would die at first. I have been drinking a LOT of water and taken motrin and after a couple of weeks it has gotten better. I have lost 12 lbs and 8 inches, so I guess what they say is true, no pain no gain. I have realized this is a whole life style change for me. Its not just about eating less its about living more. this will take some getting use to but i think it is worth it. Keep up the good work.

    weight lifting question

Definitely wait on lifting weights - When you use proper form you are almost always using your core muscles for stability, etc. That's exactly where your incisions are and you are healing. There are lots of other types of exercises you can do - I can't remember exactly what my doc told me because I am a snow skier and I had surgery on November 18 and I didn't ski again until January (late) and then very easy... you really need to heal - try walking - briskly for 1/2 hour to an hour is terrific exercise - light cardio machines etc. Always follow doc's advice. take care

    Might be pregnant

I got a lot of warnings that I would be more fertile AND had to go off the pill for 2 months. I've read you aren't supposed to get pregnant for a year. I would call your doctor immediately. https://www.babycenter.com/0_seven-facts-about-pregnancy-after-weight-loss-surgery_1504874.bc Good luck, whatever you do.

    Stall advice

You lost 36 lbs in a month? And you think that is slow? That is 15% of your entire body weight lost in one month. That isn't slow, that isn't even average, that is actually a very big loss. A stall is common around 3 weeks post op. Do a search and you will find literally 100s of threads on the "Three Week Stall". The weight loss has not stopped, it has just stalled so your body can adjust to this new and prolonged calorie deficit. You have probably even noticed that while you haven't lost but a few pounds during this stall that you seem to still be losing inches and size. Your calories/protein/carbs look to be on point for this stage.... keep doing what you have been doing and the loss will resume! Your results are already great and show that this is working for you.
  18. Has anyone tried Herbalife after WLS? Heard anything about it good/bad? Anyone that did try did you lose/gain etc.
  19. Those of you in the "green zone" (at optimum fill-level for hunger control and weight loss) what is your daily calorie goal? My surgeon initially told me 800-1,000 calories a day was goal, but I'm struggling to keep it below 1400 most days now. 800-1,000 seems really low to me. I know I'm not in the green zone yet. I'm three months out, and still in bandster hell. I'm just looking for some general figures.
  20. This is the first time this has occurred to me. I thought I was prepared for it. I do/did realize I was being petty. The feelings really did take me by surprise. If I hadn't of gone out the night before I would of gone out this morning. My hubby does support my decision to have WLS. He also has about 100 #'s to lose. It is his decision to lose weight not mine. No one else experienced something like this? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using the BariatricPal App

    How did you handle this

In my opinion, I can't resent anyone or anything when I'm the one that is abnormal and needs to be corrected. The world is not designed for the obese. I can't rage against the size of the seats in an airplane or in an arena, because they aren't made for me. They're made for the "normal" person. Obviously with obesity becoming an epidemic in the US, the definition of "normal" is kind of changing...but I don't think that's really a healthy or good thing. I cannot expect other people to modify their behavior to suit me, when it's ME that needs to modify his behavior. So I will do what I need to do in order to achieve my weight loss goals, and I won't expect anyone else to cater to me. I can control myself...especially now that I'm post-surgery and I have no real choice in the matter, and I'm not dominated by hunger. The diet you're on now pales in comparison to the two week, all-liquid pre-op diet most of us went through (some went even three weeks on it). Nothing but liquid or semi-liquid (sugar-free)...it's brutal, because you still have the hunger. Just soldier through it, because once you've had the surgery, none of it will matter anymore. You won't have hunger (only head hunger, which you can deal with) and you'll have to start focusing on re-training your brain to accommodate the new stomach. Nobody can really do any of that for you, it's all going to be on you. You're responsible for yourself, don't expect anyone else to change.

    3 days Post op sleeve

Just wanted to introduce myself and be a part of the support group. I was sleeved Friday 3/10/17 and now 3 days Post-op. I haven't lost any weight yet, hoping it's because of inflammation or water retention or something. Looking forward to sharing my journey.

    How do you eat after?!

Don't get too discouraged. This will pass soon. Especially when you see the weight coming off. I got really upset with my inability to get my nutrients in and having absolutely no taste bud consistency. Tastes good, then I'm sick of it. That happened so many times. But after 4 weeks out of work being bored , it finally leveled out. It's worth it. I have so much energy. By the way. Remember to walk every day. You'll drop the weight so much faster. I lost like 30 lbs in 3 weeks.
  24. Hi all - I've been banded since 2009 and I lost close to 100lb, gained back almost 30. I've stopped exercising, I can eat anything, haven't seen a Doc in 3+ years because I moved away from my surgeon. I need to establish a new doc, cash patient I presume, with new insurance and all, I also need to find a support group and get back on track before I "hurt" myself with a slip or other issue. I CAN EAT ANYTHING...I choose bad things - cookies, ice cream, candy, etc. I COULD drink a protein shake, eat a healthy salad for lunch and another shake for dinner and feel full and satisfied, but I don't - I eat, eat, eat - out of boredom, stupidity and I've gotten very lazy - I don't exercise anymore. Zero support from home and just moved to new area so I haven't made friends yet. I'm searching out Dr. in my area - Daytona Beach, FL area and going to get myself on track - please feel free to offer advise and motivation - I love to hear from people that are doing well, or that have experienced the same. I feel "fat" again and I'm really beginning to dislike myself again. The "rolls" are re-appearing. I was a gym-junkie for a couple of years so I know that girl is inside somewhere, but she's hiding under a blanket eating a strip of frozen thin mints. HELP!

    How did you handle this

My quote of your post broke : ...Hubby and mom went out. I was OK with it at first. By the time they got back I was a mess. I felt so left out. ...Hubby said you could of gone out and just ate some eggs. He swears that once I have my surgery he will be on board to change his diet and start losing weight. ...Between us, I'm really resentful that they went out for breakfast. Hubby could of stayed home with me and had breakfast. ...This feels so petty. But it is how I feel Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T337A using the BariatricPal App Why in the world were you "a mess"? You chose not to go. Surely missing one outing is not the end of your world? Hubby was right, you could have gone. I often go out with my friends and family to places where nothing on the menu sounds appealing, or I am really NOT hungry (if the menu is not friendly -- like pizza' and pasta' or chains where everything is fried and carby -- I usually eat first), I just order a drink. I don't NEED to eat just because everyone else is. You WILL learn to go any where you want and make great choices but you do need to practice. Why should he be "on board"? What does your weight loss have to do with his? You're resentful? That's a bit over the top, don't you think? He could have stayed home, you are right, but why should he? He enjoyed some time out with mom, good for him! And yes, you are totally entitled to your feelings. You can't help HOW you feel, but you can help how you act on them. Right now, you are acting out of emotion, not out of logic and that's understandable. I know all the above sounds a bit harsh, but that is not my intent. It this is the real world and it is about to be your reality. You can choose to go out with others, or you can choose not to. Again, you are soon going to learn that you can choose to go any where you want. You are having this surgery, your husband is not. You say he is really good at losing weight when he tries? You are not only going to be really good at losing it but you are going to be good at keeping it off. It's seriously a win. Your emotions right now are yours. You can chalk up some of it to anxiety due to a very big change that is coming in your life. You don't know what to expect, you don't know the realities of WLS except for what you've read, and you are emotional. It's ALL OK. It's going to be fine. YOU are going to be fine. You aren't going to miss out on life because of this surgery. You are, in fact, going to gain SO MUCH MORE. I promise.
