  1. I asked a lot of stuff that was pretty much answered in the videos I had to watch (and take tests on) afterwards and in the binder that was sent to me. But these are some of the things I asked (some may seem silly but it was all new to me lol)............. Various types of surgery? Which is best for me? How long does it take? How many days in hospital? How many holes in stomach? Medication after surgery? How many have you performed? Mortality rate? What tests need to be done prior? What makes the surgery work when dieting and exercise never has? Will it fix my PCOS and Insulin Resistance? Does insurance cover all the pre-testing as well as the surgery? Time line of stuff to be done until we get to surgery? What does my Insurance require? Recovery questions: How worried do I need to be about the insides coming undone? Do the staples inside the stomach stay forever or does the stomach sort of mend itself together? OK to get future MRI w/staples (if they remain in the stomach)? How often do I need to worry about getting up and walking as to avoid blood clots? How long after surgery before you can exercise w/bike, swimming, weights, etc.? Hair loss? Will I continue taking my medication as usual? What pain meds, tylenol, etc can I take afterwards? How long after until you can have sex? Post Op What would be my goal weight? I am personally comfortable with ..... (I gave 180). How long will digestion take/how long does it take food to empty from stomach afterwards? What will my stomach capacity be short and long term? Supplements for life? Alcohol use after? Fears Fear of death. Fear of losing too much/looking older. Fear of problems down the road. Right now carbs and sugar stop me from losing weight and whenever I try lose I always know to avoid those foods. Once I have the surgery, will I be able to eat foods that I currently stay away from such as whole wheat, oatmeal, fruits, certain rice, beans, etc. Things that are normally a part of any other persons normal, healthy diet?
  2. Was wondering what everyone that had March 2021 surgeries have lost thus far? I have stayed consistent in weekly loss and just this week found that I gained .9lbs. Currently I am down 52lbs and still want to lose at least 30lbs more. If you don't mind sharing your experience I would appreciate it!

    No Pre Op Diet Ordered?

I didn't. I started out at a BMI of 35, which is rather on the low end of starting points. They don't always ask you to lose weight before if they don't think you're likely to have fatty liver, which they could think because of your starting weight or other bloodwork. For instance, if your triglycerides are low, you're less likely to have fatty liver.
  4. For my 53rd birthday my husband bought me a boudoir session through Susan Page Studios as a reward for losing so much weight. I am looking for a tasteful set of bra and panties in black or maybe a pretty dark blue for the shoot. The problem is the loose skin left in the pubic area. I am currently a 36D or 36DD bra and roughly a size 10 pant. I carried all of my weight in my belly. I am 146 pounds and 5'4" so still have a bit of a stomach roll. They suggest no thongs and something more like cheekies, lacies, hipsters or boy shorts. The shoot is July 22nd so I have a little time. I will bring 5-6 outfits and shoot in 3-4 outfits. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to buy a tasteful bra/panty set that provides a little extra coverage in the nether regions but is still a little sexy. I wouldn't mind a bra that provides a little lift. At this age and with the weight loss the girls can use a little help. Has anyone else done one of the boudoir sessions? If so, did you have fun?

    May Surgeries - check in!

Hi all, 1 month post surgery today, I've lost 40 lbs overall , 20 since surgery. I've been experiencing the dreaded 3 week stall, its frustrating but not unexpected with all the forums about it out there. I started riding my bike again, I don't like walking and started a at home exercise regime. Doing yard work is my best exercise! I'm trying to get more than 600 calories a day, it's tough when I'm not hungry, I've been focusing on getting protein. I don't miss my Diet Dr. Pepper habit, which i thought would be the hardest part. Food selection hasn't been too bad, I do like the ricotta bake, I add shrimp and mushrooms. Sugar free jello for snacks and tons of yogurt. I can start regular foods next week but I don't expect I'll be getting too adventurous until I get further out. . I've had a few colleagues ask me if I've lost weight as my face they see on Teams calls is much thinner, I've told a few and not ashamed by it. We booked a trip to Nassau, Bahamas next month and I look forward to not being the beached whale. Hope you all the best, John..
  6. Hello! My name's Rachel. I'm 35, 5'0" & cw: 214. I've been trying for the past 5 months to get my (extremely good) insurance to cover a gastric sleeve for me, but they've been running me around like crazy. I've already spent 1k out of pocket, and they would make me wait at least a year to even be able to get it, and who knows how much it'd end up costing out of pocket in the US. I ended up finding out about surgery in Tijuana and just put my deposit down for surgery on September 13th. The mental health alleviation of knowing it's on the horizon and I don't have to be on the phone with my insurance every other day crying is honestly worth paying out of pocket for me. Is anyone else around my height / weight pre-surgery, and if so how are you doing in your journey?

    Insurance Through Postop

MONTH SEVEN! I’m excited today can you tell? 1. Finished my couch to 5k app. I can run for 30 minutes straight now! I am working on slowly increasing my speed now because I might be tall but I am slow. Working on it though! 2. I AM IN ONDERLAND!!!! 198.4 this morning. I haven’t been here in probably 12 years, and even that was for a short period of time. I am so excited. I’m overweight now, and getting closer to a normal weight. 10.8 lbs down this month which is great. I’m 140 lbs down total. 28.5 BMI. I went on a roadtrip with my husband and kids and it was so good. We went on so many hikes and I was able to do everything. We went out to a winery and a brewery and I had one glass at each place and felt perfectly satisfied. But I had great energy and had a wonderful time not feeling like I was holding everyone back, or making the trip all about where I could eat next. Food was an afterthought to us having a wonderful time as a family, like it should be. Goals for this month? Well I’m coming up on the one year anniversary of starting to diet in preparation for surgery. I’d love to hit 150 lbs lost- might be a bit too ambitious at this stage, but a girl can dream. 1. Increase my speed by .5 mph running. 2. Lose 10 lbs at best, 7 lbs at least. 3. Have fun on my camping trip, and over 4th of July weekend without it all being food related.

    Feeling hungry....

Congrats on your weight loss! I am only 3 months post op, so I cannot comment directly on your experience, however, I’ve always been a big snacker so I thought I’d share the information my dietician discussed with me. She told me some people have an easier time eating 5-6 small “meals” throughout the day versus 3 regular meals. She told me it’s okay if I eat a snack or two - as long as it is protein focused or a vegetable. So things like cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, cheese sticks, etc are good snack options. The other thing I’m curious about is if you are counting your calories or logging your intake in some way? That has always helped me to see what I’ve eaten and make sure I stay within my calorie limit. Anyway, I hope you can get some answers. Keep us posted ☺️

    Guys - Calories Per Day?

49yo man here 6' 3", 382 HW, 309 SW, Sleeve 5/18/20, 216 CW I stayed around 650 cals for the first 3 months post op then up to 900 thru 6 months. Hit goal at 7 months and bumped up to 1200 cals. By 9 months out was at 2000 cals for my maintenance level. I always focused on protein and hydration. My nutritionist wanted me to increase calories sooner, but I felt with my restriction I just couldn't get there. It worked best for me to measure and log everything that I ingested. Even 1+ year out, I still do this daily. Helps keep me honest and gives me good data to look back on. YMMV, though, so find what works for you. You will still be successful at a 900 calorie as you are well under your daily calorie need (BMR). As long as you are in a deficit, you will lose weight, even with an occasional stall. Most important thing is to stick with the program and not get into bad habits. During this time you almost can't fail to lose as long as you moderate your intake and keep moving - even just walking or other light exercise. Stick with it, you can do it!

    Weight stall

that's more than I was eating at that point, but you should still be losing weight on that. Maybe give it another week or two - but yea - stalls normally don't last that long.

    Tricare East

Does anyone have a detailed I guess EOB regarding weight loss surgery approval and denial from Tricare (more specifically Tricare East/Humana). I know what their website says, but it doesn’t give much info at all. Thanks!
  13. I am 2 weeks post op and my doc told me at my 1 week check up that I could do intensive classes on peloton right away. He said crank up that resistance, get out of the saddle and aim for the 30-45 minute classes. I told him I was nervous to push myself so soon- but he said it is totally fine. I’ve done about 3 intensive classes since my appointment last week and I’ve felt great- no issues! I walk on the other days. My BMI is 49 and I have 150+ lbs to lose to get near an ideal weight . I’m 5’3. Good luck everyone- I’m ready to drop these pounds.
  14. I'm mystified by this myself. I weigh 239 right now and last time I was this weight about 17 years ago, I wore a size 20 or 2X. Now I'm consistently fitting into an 18 or XL. I definitely have a different body than I did back then. I was an hourglass. I think I still technically am, but I have lost a ton in my legs and they're where I have the most loose skin even though my belly was huge before my wls. Shorts and pants are all too big in the legs but I can't get a size smaller or they won't fit around the waist and hips. My breasts haven't lost much except band size, which is how I've always been. My cup size is the same. One theory I have is that maybe the loose skin is easier to squish into a smaller size. [emoji2368] Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. I hate to shop. Losing weight has not changed that. I put off buying anything new at all until I absolutely had to. I found I could get away with using a belt (another thing I dislike) and pulling my pants up "Urkel Style." As long a my top was longer, it hid alot. But I am past that point now. I had to buy some new pants/jeans and some pants for the summer. I chose to order from places which permitted in store returns. I had no idea what size I needed to order so I would order 2 or 3 different styles/sizes knowing I wasn't going to keep them all. That was usually enough to qualify for free shipping and then I could return in person. At this point, I won't order anything that is not on clearance. I had to break down and order new bras. The "girls" have packed up and left, what remains has migrated south 😪. Again, I chose from clearance. Fortunately, my mother still has her sewing machine. She was willing to take in most of my cheap (Roamans, Woman Within) knit tops. Perhaps, lizaonaplace, you could consider that. All she did was run new seams up the sides and cut of the extra if needed. Everything is still big in the shoulders, but at least the tops no longer look like dresses (In addition to being big myself, due to where I work, I wore clothes that were baggy. I have a lot to get rid of. I don't live in a major shopping area so consignment or thrift is not an easy option. I'm also scared to---you know, the what if's. If I hadn't purged all my clothes that had become too small over time, I'd have something to wear now. Selling them online seems more work that it's worth. For now, I'm hanging on to them until I find someplace to donate. Ideally, I'd like to find some place that would provide the clothes to a plus-size woman who is truly in need.

    Breaking the stall

the vast majority of us experience stalls. It's just a normal part of weight loss. You'll likely have several on your journey, and they'll last 1-3 weeks. Just stick to your plan and stay off the scale for a few days if you need to. They'll break, and then you'll be on your way again.

    Diabetes and DS...

My wife was a twenty year diabetic, just short of being insulin dependent on about the strongest drug cocktail of the day when she had her DS, and it took her the better part of a year to be fully off of all meds for it, and 16 years later is still in solid remission. The doc told us that this is fairly typical, that the longer one has been diagnosed/under treatment, the longer it takes to fully go into remission. This is just a gross generalization, as we see many in these forums who walk out of the hospital free of meds and insulin with only a VSG or an RNY, so there can be a wide variety of responses. Your DS, particularly the "traditional" BPD/DS, is indeed the strongest tool against diabetes - our doc's experience is in the 98-99% remission rate area, which should not be too surprising as it started as a surgical treatment specifically for diabetes, to which the sleeve was added to make it a weight loss procedure. It also seems to be the most enduring procedure for it, as it seems to usually stay in remission even with a fair bit of regain, which happens sometimes, though less with the DS than with other WLS. A few years ago we had a gal come through our support group who had been a successful RNY patient for 20+ years, (the practice was not yet doing the DS at her time of surgery) but whose diabetes had come out of remission with only some moderate weight gain, so she was back to get her RNY revised to the DS to knock it out for good. So, it is an excellent first choice for a diabetic WLS patient. Good luck in your adventure!

    Not wanting to eat

I know this is a weird thing to say, but...enjoy it while you can. For most of us, hunger comes roaring back sometime within the first year, and then things become much more challenging. It'll never in your life be easier to lose weight than it will right now, when you don't give a flip about food. In retrospect, I wish my hunger had never come back!!!
  19. As of last Tuesday, I was in a 2 week stall. Even knowing it was normal and inevitable, it felt terrible. I let myself feel down for a day and then I increased my protein intake and started resistance band training (I was exactly 8 weeks out). I also incorporated more potassium rich food to combat sodium bloat. Today I went in for my 2 month follow up and I’m down 12 pounds from last Tuesday, 32 since surgery, and 45 from my starting weight. I’m sure the stall would’ve broken on it’s own but I feel good about the adjustments and I’m enjoying short resistance workouts. Hoping anyone else in a stall right now feels hopeful after reading this!
  20. I've lost almost 40 lbs and I am not looking forward to sizing out of clothes. I don't have any clothes from my previous weight losses and so far my clothes are a bit loose but since I had recently gained 25 lbs during COVID, they aren't too bad, except for some I bought at my heaviest, and those are just long sleeve t-shirts, so it doesn't matter. I have noticed that my pants start to fall down when I exercise, so I might be getting close on that score... For environmental/human rights reasons I don't want to buy a lot of cheap clothes and the thrift shops near me are pretty gross. Also, for some reason they are arranged by color rather than size so it's impossible to find anything. I'm wondering how long I can put off buying clothes that fit, since I usually work from home except when I travel, about once a month. Has anyone done Thread Up? I did Gwynnie Bee (plus size clothing rental) when I lost weight the last time, but it doesn't really work with my current lifestyle of working from home and traveling once a month for a few days.

  22. Except it's not. Literally every pair of jeans I've tried on I wear a 12 unless it's skinny jeans, then it's a 14 (except for 1 pair which fits and is a 12). And when I was this weight before I was a 1xl in tops, but that fits like a TENT on me. I wear either a medium or large depending on the shirt. XL and 1x are HUGE on me. The only thing I can think of is maybe when I was this weight before I was more insecure so I bought bigger sizes? But it's been 20 years so my memory is a bit shaky...
  23. I am hoping someone else can shed light or maybe give me some ideas/an avenue to explore. I had my GB in February of 2020. It has been nearly a year and a half of ups and downs. Roller coasters, a lot of insight and enlightenment. It has been HARD. Like, really, really hard. I am sick nearly every day. Some days, I could eat 2 slices of pizza with no issue (that's RARE and just an example) but other days I can eat 1/4 cup of oatmeal and water and puke violently. I've noticed meat is almost always a no-go. Red meat, especially. In any variation (ground, steak, etc). I usually only crave carbs anymore and I'm constantly thirsty. Let me just make clear just exactly how sick I am, though: Waking up, nothing on my stomach- throwing up within 10 minutes of waking up. Driving to work, start dumping after having 100 calorie nut bar or cereal for breakfast. Even water, occasionally. Having the urge to go to the bathroom, nothing happens. Multiple times a day. Then, one day, I run to the toilet rocking back and forth hoping for the good lord to take me out of my misery since it feels like I'm giving birth in my intestines. Holding a trash can in front of me because my mouth is watering with anticipation of puking. The dumping is INTENSE. Like, I don't wanna live it's so miserable (FYI- I am NOT suicidal!). My heart races, my whole body tenses and gets super hot. I feel like I'm dying. Like, actually dying. I am just overwhelmed because when this first started, I went to the ER, did a CT, EGD, Biopsy, Blood work....Everything was unremarkable. They wanted me to get a gastric emptying study done, but I feel like I'm going around and around. I KNOW without a shadow of a doubt that this is related to the GB. No questions. I also will have severe pain in my RUQ (right upper quadrant) that shoots to my shoulder. Gallbladder was out in 2018. It is starting to affect my school, work and personal life. GI doctors are limited in this area so I am at a loss. They don't want to do anything else and I am so frustrated. I take Linzess for IBS-C that my weight loss doctor prescribed. I need an alternative. Can anyone give any input? Any similar experiences?
  24. Lose to Cruise

    What was your tipping point?

Wow! I'm so excited to find you all! I've been struggling and yo-yoing for years. Almost every time I meet a new doctor, one of the first things they ask is if I want to consider WLS. I've always said NO. I really thought I could do it on my own, and I have, several times, but always gain it back and more. Now my knees are bone-on-bone and I am in constant pain. My quality of life stinks and I hate not being able to do even the most "normal" things, like clean my apartment, walk up stairs, etc. I now work at a hospital and have good benefits and noticed on our website that they are offering a virtual info session on their weight loss surgery options. So, I signed up! I found this website by searching about alcohol after WLS! lol . I have a goal for 2023, to do a Mediterranean cruise. I went on one in 2016 when I was about 30 pounds lighter. I was able to walk and get around, but I know it would have been so much better if I wasn't so heavy/morbidly obese. I want to go back and see the places we missed (I travel with my daughters) and I know if I don't get this weight off, I won't be able to do it.

    Gastric balloon newbie

Hi gn, Yes my BMI was 47.5 when I got the balloon. I was concerned for that reason too having read that 30-40 range. but my surgeon often inserts them for higher BMI's. There has been recent research too regarding using gastric balloons such as orbera as a pre-treatment for those who are not yet at a safe weight for surgery, so ultimately this did not concern me or my doctor as he has seen very good results for the 40-60 BMI range in his patients over the last 5 years - in my country it is approved for use if your BMI is above 27, I can't say I know how the FDA stuff works so I imagine that is a discussion to have on a case by case basis and some centres may have a policy otherwise. I am down a little over 9kg (a bit over 20 pounds) since my procedure. I am averaging a pound a day at the moment though I expect that will taper off as I am able to eat more. My BMI has already dropped by 3 points which is pretty exciting. Sent from my SM-G965F using BariatricPal mobile app
