I had BCBS of IL and was denied. Of course my surgery was 9/17/10 and they started approving the sleeve as on 10/1/10. Yeah, I paid for it but it was worth every penny Love your tenacity and follow up with insurance not letting them off the hook. Oh - I was an outpaitent for my surgery and am glad I did it this way. My surgeon did not offer discounts for outpatient. Experience, technique of surgery and low risk rate of doctor is more important than pricing when chosing a good surgeon. You did what was right for you and I would have been leary of a doc who kept lower pricing and offering "specials." But don't discount all outpatient surgeries for VSG, it is the way barriatrics are going. I was glad to be home in my own bed without people bothering me all night long. No drain, no pain meds (none needed) and recouping in comfort. I spent a lot, but have no regrets. Congrats on a great fight to get your sleeve!

I'm stalled :( NEED encouragement!
NtvTxn replied to TXBell's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Like you, I weigh every single day....going up or down does not bother me, it's part of it. The thing is, if I'm up 2 or 3, I KNOW and I can do something about it, easy! If I weighed once a week or once a month - yikes. We all know how quickly we can gain 10 lbs.....that would not be as simple to get a grip on. Dr. Davidson told me to weigh, so I could nip it in the bud if the scale went up. -
I'm stalled :( NEED encouragement!
buplee replied to TXBell's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I keep my proteins between 70-90 grams daily and have been active and getting in my water daily but have hit a two week stall. The scale has not moved and I am doing everything as directed. I too am discouraged but see that I am not alone. Any suggestions on how to break out of this? I was sleeved on 2/19 and I am 38 lbs down including pre-op. -
Well I'm a slow loser
Chaparra replied to brandy88's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm right with you, a slow loser. I've accepted it and try to look at it in different ways. I'm averaging about 10 pounds a month, so far. That means in 10 months, I will be down 100 pounds, and that makes me extremely happy. Also, I'm hoping that by losing slow, I maybe won't have to deal with the horrible hair loss that everyone talks about. LOL -
I am almost 10 months post-op and rarely am hungry. I remember one time last month when my stomach actually growled...I was so surprised.

WOW ! haha i think it really depends on the type of women you are trying to attract maybe ? I think women my age( 30) are looking for different things than say a girl in her 20's . Dont get me wrong the " Laws of attraction " do exist ! You can be best friends in the world with a " 10 " but not want to be with them if you arent attracted to them inside and out . That goes for me anyway . A guy could look like Brad pitt but if hes a total moron .. or he's mean to his mother ... or if theres just no "spark " its not going to happen. Topic starter - This was a great topic ! I think you should just believe in yourself and love yourself and the right girl will come along . or " hottie " sorry haha

A lot of it depends on how old you are What women look for when they are 22 is very different at 32 and different at 42 I've been married for almost 18 years, so I am not dating However, when I was in law school in my 30s I had several, extremely attractive, classmates make their availability known.......despite being at possibly the heaviest I've ever been The most recent girl that made it clear if I wanted to wander I could is 22, and quite attractive I never have wandered and don't intend to start. My point is simply I was hit on when I was skinny, and when I was heavy too I do think for me there are a certain number of factors 1). Yes, I am way overweight. But it's deceptive because I'm also six and a half feet tall, and (as I jokingly tell people) cut under all this fat. I look a lot like most offensive linemen do, which makes sense, because I was one. I'm fat, not bad looking 2). I'm married. I hate to say it, but that does attract a certain class of ladies. And the more I say no, the more some press. 3). The Kevin James effect as already described. I'm a confident, outgoing person. As was said, if you're a skinny douchebag I think you have less chance than if you are really cool big guy. Most "9s and 10s" as the OP worded it can be choosy as hell. Being skinny won't just do it. Nor will a great personality. Oh, and please, for god's sake, never refer to it as "game" around women

I talk with my friends and we all find different things attractive about me. I tend to like the heavier set guy (I know I wouldn't break him in half, :-) ). Just like guys we like to look and we look at everyone from a 1-10. My problem is that I am starting to wonder wth is wrong with me. I always end up being the "friend" or the stepping stone until the next next thing comes around.

It takes time. Don't be disappointed. I am down 120 pounds in 7 months...10 pounds till my goal weight. Your doing really well.

Pre-op diet = protein shakes only
kcadoret replied to Smal2015's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've lost about 10 lb so far and I'm on day 5 of 21. I'm having trouble with diarrhea so far but was just informed that taking fiber capsules will help. I'm pretty sick of the shakes already but I don't get the variety of products as many of you do -
I've been cursing whoever came up with the liquid diet today! I was soooo hungry! This is only day 3 and surgery is 10/14. When I get that hungry, I try to drink a bunch of Water. It's hard, but it will all be worth it right!? (I would LOVE to get some good ideas for what to do with/for broth! I'm already sick of it!) Karen

Can Anybody Relate?
ParrotheadCathy replied to HelloSkinny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1cc is basically almost no restriction. If you try very hard to stick to the eating plan, you will lose but you will experience hunger. Getting stuck has nothing to do with having any restriction. It can happen before your first fill. A few comments .... corn is a starchy vegetable and probably not a good choice. Dry Protein of any variety is likely to stick. Put some kind of sauce on it or soak it in broth. My doctor suggests eating your protein, then your veggie and then waiting 15 minutes. If you still feel hungry, then have a single serving of whole grain carb (not potato or corn or similar starchy vegetable). If you get hungry before 4 hours, eat an ounce of low fat cheese, 1/2 cup of low fat cottage cheese, or even an ounce of meat. Eventually, if you eat slowly and chew well (and have more restriction than 1cc), you will feel full. If won't be that Thanksgiving Day stuffed feeling but full nonetheless. If you eat fast, you'll just run right past that feeling, so eat slowly and enjoy your meal [your protein, then your veggie and then waiting 15 minutes. If you still feel hungry, then have a single serving of whole grain carb]. Don't eat chips and salsa (and other "slider" food) just because you can! Eat by the meal plan. I've had 4 fills (on top of .6cc in my band after surgery) and I am at 5.6 and feel that I am at my sweet spot. My surgery was 2/10 and my 4th fill was just 2 weeks ago. Patience is something you're going to have to find, and I know it's hard. You feel like you've finally done something to fix this problem and damn-it-all it isn't working as fast as you want. -
After a stall that felt like it lasted an eternity- I am actually down 3 whole pounds this week. It has been forever since I have lost 3 pounds in one week. I am thrilled. 187!! I haven’t seen this weight for more than 10 years.

The Truth About Life After 'The Biggest Loser'
Goddardgo replied to Terry Poperszky's topic in Rants & Raves
I actually adutioned for season 9 with my cousin. I am thankful that I didn't get the call. Now my cousin did, the next season. She was part of the season 10 cast. She did an awesome job while being on the ranch, lost 96 pounds during the season. I will say, she has reminded me that it is a "contest" and they really do try to win the prize. I know that she had a really unforgettable experience while being on the ranch and is happy she did it, but I think this last season just went to far! The winner looked ill.. too skinny.. not healthy. I just can't wait to get my sleeve on!! -

Beni replied to Alumace's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Perth? Hey, I lived in Canberra for 5 years (10 years ago.) Loved every minute of it and would go back in a heart beat, if I could. Never made it to Perth though. Wow, that's really quick. In the US we have to wait 3 to 6 months in nutrition counseling before we get to the bariatric doctor (this is a medical insurance requirement.) It makes sense to get a specialist dietician though. I am sure there are extra concerns to deal with. Do as much research as you can. There is lots to learn and consider. I am glad you have made positive chances on what you eat. Every little bit helps. -
I have an amazing pair of size 10 jeans from the Limited that I used to wear all the time when I was at my thinnest (before my band slipped). They're tucked away in a storage bin at the moment, but I plan on getting them out soon in preparation for my upcoming journey with the sleeve :-)

Bariatric Surgery and Alcoholism
VSGAnn2014 replied to WL WARRIOR's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Anecdotal experiences of individuals are often attention-grabbing. However, the following facts about alcohol abuse and dependence among the general population and among WLS populations offer context for the experience of the WLS patient shown in the above video. Alcohol is the most commonly used addictive substance in the U.S. 17.6 million people, or one in every 12 adults, suffer from alcohol abuse or dependence along with several million more who engage in risky drinking patterns that could lead to alcohol problems. More than half of all adults have a family history of alcoholism or problem drinking, and more than seven million children live in a household where at least one parent is dependent or has abused alcohol. https://ncadd.org/for-the-media/alcohol-a-drug-information Here are the findings from one study published in 2012 about transfer alcohol addiction after WLS (in this case RnY): In addition to the potential for weight regain, WLS patients, RYGB patients in particular, are at risk for emergence of alcohol use disorders by 2 years post-WLS, with 16.5% of patients engaging in hazardous alcohol use and nearly 10% having an alcohol use disorder [37] http://turner-white.com/pdf/jcom_oct13_bariatric.pdf The same study referenced these earlier study's findings: In a large-scale longitudinal study, rates of alcohol use disorders did not differ from 1 year before to 1 year after surgery, but by 2 years post-WLS the rate of problematic alcohol use increased significantly. Specifically, drinking ≥ 4 times per week and meeting alcohol dependence criteria both increased from about 3% to 5% of patients from baseline to year 2, and any form of alcohol use disorder increased from 7.6% to 9.6% during this same time frame. Notably, the escalation of problematic alcohol use was significant only among RYGB patients, not those who underwent adjustable gastric banding.
