Christmas time IS harder as a vet

Came out the other end of Christmas dinner ok. I did not gain, am at the high end of goal bounce range and fasting today. I ended up eating a little less overboard than expected, and rather than being up by 16 pounds like I was at the holidays last year... I'm at goal. Thanks sleeve! Thanks 5:2, and thank you all for being such a good support system.

Christmas time IS harder as a vet

I am testing my plan.... eat some off plan stuff a few of the days of holiday.... 5:2 fast one or two days a week, and so far so good. Up two pounds over my high bounce a couple of days, at my high end of bounce the last couple of days, fasting tomorrow.... then I should be good until New Years day.... I make sure to write it all down in MFP and try and get in some walks. Today I was over plan by about 700 calories.... the most yet, but with the fast tomorrow, that should balance it out. Not burying or hiding my indulgences helps me to stay in the drivers seat... writing them down helps me to face the facts about my choices, and not get caught by surprise with an unexpected weight gain, or a run-on unconscious eating spree. I suspect I will have carb craving for a few days... but thats the price of eating some real sugar and such in higher quantities. I have enjoyed most of them.

To tell people or not to tell

First and far most importantly I will say I did this for myself, no one else. When I first started thinking about getting the LapBand I only told my parents and my husband. Couldn’t have asked for a more supportive husband, my parents on the other hand were a little worried but once I explain things to them, they as always, supported my decision. As things got more serious I told a few close friends. I was really shocked by their response “You don’t need that”, “Your not THAT heavy”, “You can lose the weight without it”. At this point I had already made up my mind. It might be hard hearing things like that from my friends, but at the end of the day people are entitled to their option, and people that care about you will let you know what they think. It was important for me that I set things clear with them though. I was not asking for permeation, or validation for my decision. I was only letting them know. I set things straight from the very first time. I explained why I had made the decision to change my life. I was lucky enough that people were able to understand where I was coming from and even if they didn’t think I needed it. They supported it because it was MY decision. Now that my surgery is coming up in only 10 days! YIKES! I feel like I can be opened about my surgery. I don’t need to hide it, or be embarrassed because this is the life I have chose. A better life for me. Put your head way high because many people still can’t take the step forward to bettering their lives and guess what.. YOU HAVE!! Learn to stand by your decition and be strong to does you love. Remember: “BE WHO YOU ARE AND SAY WHAT YOU FEEL, BECAUSE THOSE WHO MIND DON’T MATTER, AND THOSE WHO MATTER DON’T MIND”

To tell people or not to tell

I have recently made the decision to go ahead with the RNY surgery, and was going to tell no one but my partner. But I didn't think that was fair to my daughter , so I told her (she is surprisingly supportive about it). My son is in the Army, and will be coming home soon. I will tell him then. My children love me, and will support me. I just didn't want to worry them, but they'd be pissed if I went under the knife without them knowing. However, the one person I shouldn't have told, and I KNEW I shouldn't have told, but did anyway, was my mother. My relationship with her has always been rocky, and she has always been hypercritical of me and my father's "fat family", so I knew what I was going to get. And I got it, in spades. All the voices in my head are now clamoring about how I'm weak, this is what lazy people do, if I just tried I could have lost the weight on my own. I'm 53...if I could have done it, it would have happened already. And even though I haven't been obese all my life, I've always felt obese. So I've made my path just a little more challenging by sharing with the wrong person. So, anyway, that's my rant. I have to get her lousy voice out of my head now, and do what I need to do to get healthy.
  5. I had done some research and heard anywhere from a size 32 french bougie to a 40. 40 being larger. My surgeon uses a 40. I'm just concerned it may not be as restrictive. I don't really have a choice but was curious of others experience and successes with various sizes. Also I am 298 lbs and the surgeon said he'd be disappointed if I didn't lose 100 lbs in a year and not surprised if I lost 100 in 6 months. Is this possible? Other lose that much in 6 month's? Any tips for success .I would be thrilled to lose 100 in 6 months.being 5'6" my ideal weight is around 140. I'd be happy with 160. I'd be happy to see the 100's again. What's folks regiment post op for exercise ie: 1 week out 1 month 3 month etc... Thx

    For Aetna people

I didn't have a two year weight history either. I got Aetna last August and attained a new doctor in September. I started seeing her for weight management back in February and once every month there after. My bariatric surgeon's patient coordinator sent all my paper work to Aetna and I received approval within 4 days.

    Am I really that vain?

No one complimented my weight loss at all, but I attributed that to the fact that I have lost and regained weight so many times over the years, that people are hesitant to say anything anymore.
  8. That's amazing! I have been working on my current job for nearly 3 years. I ran into a fellow co-worker who said they did not recognize me. I'm only 6 months out, down 73 pounds from my highest weight, 63 pounds since surgery.

    Local government BCBS AL

Does anyone have LG BCBS of Alabama? If so, I'm interested to know about your experiences with them and the approval process. I'm currently awaiting approval for the VSG and I've been extremely stressed about it. My surgeons office submitted dated photos along with the pre approval documents. It was either 3 years of height and weight records it dated photos, we chose dated photos. Has anyone else submitted pics for approval?
  11. My highest weight was 246. I had lapband in 2006. I only lost maybe 40 pounds. Gained 20 back then lost it again doing HCG. Gained and lost it again doing good old diet and exercise as the band did not really work for me. At 205 pounds, I did revisional surgery to gastric sleeve in January of 2013, but I left my band in. So, my stomach was not cut as small as most sleevers. Weight loss was slow, and I could eat whatever I wanted without getting sick or having any negative side affects. I just became fuller faster and as such ate smaller portions. Today I weigh 126 and have lost an overall total of 120 pounds...still 10 away from my personal goal. In my personal opinion...I wish I skipped the lapband all together and went straight for the sleeve. I left my band in as a security blanket. I now wish I just took it out and got the smaller stomach. Luckily, my insurance covered both surgeries. Just my two cents for anyone who wants it.
  12. I'm with you. I've never felt normal with the band. I am forever getting stuck. If I take out any Fluid I have no restriction. It just hasn't worked for me. I lost, I gained. My port is always tender.

    Pregnancy before VSG Surgery

After the birth of my son they recommended that I wait 6 months so all hormones stabilize and pregnancy weight is lost. I don't have a required diet with my insurance so I'm not sure how they would do that for you! Best of luck! Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App
  14. Welcome my new friend and fellow Edema-mate Lisa. Like this 2 previous posters I too have lymphedema, mine was bad enough my surgeon lifted one eyebrow and Said" You are taking your diuretics, right?". And like @ Creek Imp and @ Mattymatt won this battle with SwellMonster with. Baiatric Surgery's help, I too hope to claim victory. I suspect mine is one part bad valves, one part the fluid is trapped at the thigh- pelvic junction by upper body weight. But I do have surgery upcoming in September, the 5th of September to be exact when I will have a RnY bypass, and will claim this victory with the others of weight loss. So let's agree to be friends, if you like I'll tell you more of my past life and future hopes. A new friend Frustr8. PS I HATE pressure stockings!👣
  15. I am so please that at 5 weeks post surgery I've lost 39 lbs (since I've started this journey). I feel so much better, it's amazing! However not one person outside of my family has noticed that I've lost weight. I realize that I'm 5'11" and proportionally that's not as much than if I was 5'2", but still I'm disappointed. I know, I know that I didn't do this for the reaction I'd get, but it still bugs me. I have to laugh though because I really didn't want to share with others that I've had the surgery -- I got my wish didn't I?

    Am I really that vain?

Don't worry. All of the sudden it will be very obvious to everyone around you. I actually became very uncomfortable with all of the attention that my sudden weight loss drew. Some people just go on and on and on about it. You'll soon start to hear that you're too skinny! Good Luck on your amazing journey!

    Am I really that vain?

I have some friends who don't comment/compliment on weight loss because if you don't know the situation you can really put your foot in your mouth. Like if you tell someone how great they look and it turns out they've lost weight because they have cancer. Keep plugging away, you are doing great!

    I gained

hi pezo yes i did gain after surgery. it had to do with water retention, swelling, etc dont worry...i found staying away from the scale initially a good thing since it was making me crazy. i always felt if i didnt eat a meal i should lose 10 lbs (of course i am exaggerating) for the first 2 weeks i focused on getting back on my feet. the 3 main things my doctor stressed: 1. walk, walk, walk 2. do breathing exercises. 3. drink plenty of water. hope this helps....

    Freaking out but determined.

Hi congrats on taking the first steps to be healthy, I must say that when I began my journal and they told me 6 months if weight management I was like that's a long time well it's been 7 months and I just got my first surgeon appointment which will make it 8 months, but what I have learned during these months are more about me, you say that food has been your go to person for happiness or sadness, you will learn why you use food to comfort you, what your triggers are, what saddens you and begin to understand why you turn to food for comfort . I would strongly suggest journaling beginning right now you will be amazed with reading and confronting your fears and anxiety which underlies why you are truly eating .most of us are eating because we are truly unhappy with ourselves and the state we are in, you mentioned you are married and would like kids focus on getting healthier for you, being a better person, loving yourself . I truly realize I'm the key to my own happiness, it's not my husband it's me. Good luck and remember we are all hear for you .

    Isn't it Ironic

That sucks. At least you can still have them done albeit it more expensively. Congratulations on the weight loss. I always love seeing people who I haven't seen in awhile. I can never wait to see and hear their reactions to my new body. Keep up the amazing work!
  21. I literally had to get to 50lbs before anyone not in the loop even mentioned my weight loss. But once they started its been daily since! Don't let it get you to down, you're doing great!!

    For Aetna people

Adding the link for Aetna requirements. You don't need 2 years of weight history I was just sleeved in May and did not have that and was approved with no problems. http://www.aetna.com/cpb/medical/data/100_199/0157.html

    Am I really that vain?

Someone noticed! A friend at work who I haven't seen in a while said, "Something's different about you. Have you been losing weight?" I was thrilled, but of course didn't want her to know how over the moon I was by her comment. I simply said in reply that I've working hard at it and it was nice of her to notice. I've been smiling ever since!

    Am I really that vain?

I've said this before, but my favorite comment was, "You've lost a crap ton of weight!" Makes me wonder, though... How many pounds are in a crap ton?
  25. Oh wanted to add have two friends one had bypass one had the sleeve. Bypass friend has hit goal and maintained for three years. Sleeve friend hit goal but has gained ten but says she's happy there. So that probably didn't help lol. I'm sorry! I think they're both great choices!
