My doctor's PA made me promise not to weigh until the 5week post op visit. She said otherwise I would break my own heart because weight fluctuates after surgery.

Hi Everyone 👋, I had my surgery on the 24th, I have lost 16lbs in total so far and 1.3lbs last week. However, I am up 1.5lbs since yesterday 😔. I am getting 50-55oz of water and do 2 protein shakes a day each one of them is 30gms of protein, regular bowl movement. I am suppose to start soft foods today but, I fear I won't lose any weight if start eating anything at all. What am I doing wrong? The weigh in has me in tears this morning 😔. Any suggestions on what I can do to help lose weight 😢

Lifting weights. Collagen. And skin care. Doesn’t mean you won’t have lose skin. Helps reduce the amount of lose skin. This is coming from someone who started very heavy (320).

Not likely. Do you have a gym or clinic where you can get an accurate weight?

So my scale has been out of whack for a month maybe. I just replaced the batteries. My last reliable weight would have been 295 about 3 weeks ago. Today it was 262. Is it possible to drop that much weight so quickly? I'm about 7 weeks post op vgs. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using BariatricPal mobile app

The good news is we don't need to exercise to lose weight we just need to be in calorie deficit, but if you did want to some exercise, is water aerobics an option for you or perhaps a recumbent bike?

No restriction going from VSG to RNY really bothered me for a long time and was the worst. Best thing for me was that I am a dumper since I have no restriction and this keeps me in check and its much easier to maintain weight loss. -
1 year out DS and going crazy
Arabesque replied to Texasjamie's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
You’ve lost 215lbs? That’s amazing. Congratulations. Though I’m sorry you had problems after your DS surgery. I agree with @Creekimp13’s suggestion to see a therapist. They’ll support you work through any emotional issues you may have & provide strategies to help you do the head work needed to be successful in this process. I wasn’t an avid calorie counter but did random checks. It’s easy to overestimate portion size, calorie content & the nutritional content of what you’re eating. It is a pain but very worthwhile. I’d also suggest contacting your nutritionalist (or finding one who specialises in bariatric patients) to review your diet & make suggestions. Of course, if you are doing all the right things, it could be a stall. Most last 1-3 weeks but that’s the average, some do last longer. They are the worst but sometimes your body just needs time to catch up with all the changes, like your weight loss, reduced calories, dietary changes, increased activity, etc. You’ve got a great cheer squad in your husband (ignore your family) & your children are a great motivation. There’s always support & advice here too. All the best. -
8 months NO WEIGHT LOSS
Officially Not Fatty Matty replied to *MOM of 3*'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My wife is in the same situation. One year out, 20lbs down. She eats like a bird. Healthy and incredibly low calorie count. She did prior to surgery too. I personally don’t think she needed it, but she felt like she did. She’s pretty muscular so I think a lot of her weight just isn’t meant to come off. She has had multiple tests and specialists and other than severe anemia (a dozen Iron infusions so far and it’s barely crawling up) nothing seems to be wrong. It sucks, I know. The worst part is when doctors and people assume she isn’t following the plan, isn’t exercising enough etc…. (How many of you reading this are making the same assumption?) We should have known because her calorie count was sub 1000 prior to surgery, did a daily personal trainer thing for several months etc and never lost. Smaller stomach hasn’t changed much for her to be honest. One doctor told her if there was a famine she would be one of the survivors. :/ I guess the two of you could hang out if that happens. Edit: I forgot to add that she has tried several medications that supposedly help with weight loss. Since a lot of these work by suppressing appetite they clearly won’t work in her case, but that seems to be all they can figure out to try. -
That makes sense! I can do 4-6 oz of food at a time and I try to add as much nutrients to it as possible I just want to find the line between weight loss and giving my body enough to heal.

My binder does NOT give calories guidelines for the FULL LIQUID, PUREE, or SOFT FOODS stages. Just amounts of things I should be eating, i.e. 4 oz. It says once I get to my regular food stage to stay around 1000 or under for continued weight loss. Then I guess once I hit my goal that will increase slightly but not sure yet as I'm only 3.5 weeks out.

I've got Cigna Health Insurance and they have exclusions specifically for weight loss related stuff (even prescriptions). Doesn't make sense to me, but it is what it is. It does mean I paid out of pocket though. The surgery itself was around $19.5k. That said, insurance also does not cover any of the pre-op or post-op care appointments either. I think we're already up around 23k total paid if you include surgery and appointments. Then it's usually a good $500-$600 per appointment at the hospital if it involves seeing the surgeon. Little less if it's a registered nurse. And less again if it's the dietician. So the number will steadily increase over time with follow up visits.

I converted from lapband (2012) to the sleeve in 2016. Before my surgery they asked me to quit caffeine. I was drinking my coffee with regular coffeemate and I almost lost too much weight for the surgery. Does anyone have any healthy recommendations for coffee creamer, I prefer the liquid to cool my coffee but am not set on it. I don't think I care for almond milk creamers. Thank you!!

April 6 Surgery - STALLED!!!
Luna Girl replied to cre8tivetara's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think our bodies have "set points" or different weights our body wants to be. I think I had/have five "set points". I stayed on my first one for two weeks, my second set point (stall) lasted a week and I just broke thru and lost 3 pounds in two days. Set points are hard to break thru but with our wls tool, it is much easier than before. Good Luck! https://www.prevention.com/weight-loss/a20455278/how-to-shift-your-set-point-weight/ -
Do you have a dietitian or anyone you can check in with as that’s a little odd. I’ve done this diet twice and both time have lost weight. My surgery is tomorrow and I’m currently down 9kg from 2 weeks of LRD. I would reach out to the team who is in charge of your surgery and see what advice they have.

I’m so sorry your having problems with your preop weight loss. It can be frustrating when taking this huge step forward in your health journey. i don’t know what surgery you’re going to have but with bypass not only does it restrict but your body doesn’t absorb all of the calories you take in. So that also helps. I don’t know much about the sleeve cause I knew I wanted the bypass from day one. also please don’t be worried about the future. With your surgery if you follow the guidelines set by your surgeon and nutritionist then you are going to see results more than 10lbs. Keep a positive attitude and the faith. Also give yourself a hug and pat on the back for coming this far and taking charge for a healthier life.

8 months NO WEIGHT LOSS
CheerfulLoser replied to *MOM of 3*'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 5ft 3, and stalled on weight loss pretty quickly. I’m relatively surprised at how few calories I can eat to not gain weight— everyone says 1200 calories for weight loss, but I can’t go over 1000 or the weight creeps on. i don’t have a good answer for you, but you’re definitely not alone. -

Then we could approach this from the other side... Why would an easy way that works necessarily be bad? It's not 'real' weight loss if it doesn't involve suffering? Good Luck, Tek -

You’re going to do great! I’ve always been someone who can maintain a higher weight on low calories, especially for my height. The surgery has worked for me thus far- stick to your program, but also be mindful of what you know your triggers and pitfalls are. I know I can’t have candy or snack food because I am well aware that I have longstanding issues with control and these types of food. I still have snacks on occasion, but I have “real” food snacks, not chips or popcorn for example. Find distractions during the preop diet- it’s easier when you’re occupying your time rather than focusing on what you’re not eating. Finally, be patient! You will have stalls- almost everyone has a stall at 3 weeks and then comes on the forums to announce that the surgery didn’t work for them and they will never lose weight again. It’s normal, it’s temporary, no changes need to be made, just get off the scale for a stall and keep to the program. Oh, go take pre-surgery pics and measurements! I didn’t and I knew i should and I regret that. -
Hi Mom of 3: im a mom of 3 and 5’ 2” so can sort of understand your frustrations. However I’m only about two weeks out from surgery. You have lost 40 to 45 pounds — that is amazing. I hope to lose that much in the next year as well. Others on this forum can probably give you some tips, I know there are bariatric coaches who will be able to help and give you ideas. who gives a d*** what your supposed “normal weight” is supposed to be. You are brave to have taken this step and with your experience you can probably help a lot of newbies like me. this is a great place to share your thoughts because everyone is so encouraging. hang in there - you’ve got this!

I had VSG surgery 5/2020, I stopped completely losing weight in November 2020, and I have not lost any since. I have been put on Saxenda, and Phenteramine (at different times). I fluctuate between 165-170. my height is 5'2. I stated at 210, so I have successfully lost 40 # but thats it. I am NO WHERE near where I thought the surgery would allow me to lose. I feel like a failure. I only consume about 1000 calories a day. I started CROSSFIT but have stopped since about a month ago. I'm just over it. I'm over trying I'm over the whole thing. I'm so frustrated and mad at myself for even allowing myself to have the surgery. So my question is has anyone else been through this and if so what did you do about it and get successful results. I don't know whether I need to do a VSG to RNY conversion. I don't know if I even have that option to be honest. For my height to be at a normal weight I would need to be at 135 but I would love to lose another 20 lbs.

1 year out DS and going crazy
Glamgirl replied to Texasjamie's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Talk to your surgeon ASAP and they will discuss options for you . As for a pill, ask your doc about phentermine. It helps. It’s short term but it got me back on track when I gained 20 lbs during Covid times. I lost it all now and I’m doing great again … still trying to lose more though. I eat very low carbs which helps a lot . Good luck and you have done great so far!! Give yourself credit for that! -

Creekimp13 replied to Texasjamie's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Have you tried a bariatric therapist? Getting to the root of my disordered eating habits was critical for me to reach goal and maintain. Are you tracking every crumb you eat? I know that sounds critical, but it isn't meant to be....I genuinely thought I was eating a LOT less than I was until I started measuring and tracking absolutely every calorie that went into my body. Yes, it's a hellish pain in the ass. And sadly, it's necessary. You have lost 215 pounds. That is a HUGE accomplishment! I'm crazy proud of you and you should be, too. Sometimes when your body loses a metric feck ton of weight in a short period of time....a starvation defense mechanism kicks in and it plateaus for a while. Be patient and stick to good lifelong habits, a good balanced diet. If you're tracking, measuring and mindfully watching what and why you eat....you'll get there. Hang in there! -
Obesity and depression often go hand in hand. Prior to obsessing about your weight loss, it is crucial to deal with your mental health. Better still, you should focus not just on your physical state but also on your mental wellbeing. However, forums such as these can only provide moral support. You may need an expert opinion to deal with your mental health issues. Several clinical trials are being conducted globally that analyses the relationship between depression and obesity. Free services like http://centrial.org can help you find clinical trials being conducted on obesity and depression near you.
