    Newbie banded 4/4/09

my surgeon said walking would not hurt right after surgery but any heavy lifting would have to wait until 6 weeks after surgery. I would say as long as it's low impact and not weights , whenever you are feeling better would probably be fine.

    Newbie banded 4/4/09

Hi there everyone, Yep, my doctor has given similar instruction to my partner who was banded yesterday. Walking is fine - he suggested walking 5 mins the first day, increasing by 5 minutes per day until you get to 30mins/day and then continuing with that as a minimum (he suggested a target 10,000 steps/day). As per BrockBabe's advice, he also advised no heavy lifting for 6 weeks. In case you might be interested there's a forum for all of us being banded in April HERE and we've added you to the list of April bandsters HERE.

Getting Enough Liquids In ? Help!

I am drinking Isopure Grape Frost with 2 oz. grape juice mixed in. Very tolerable & I am getting both protein & fluids in. Yes, I know grape juice is high in carbs but 2 oz to 40 oz fluid is ok for my first week of clear.

    Drinking after sleeve

I had trouble in the first week or two with the immediately gurgling/gas sensation and some esophageal constriction after every single sip I took. I can still get that now if I drink too much too fast, but I get it much more with food now than I do with liquid.
  6. I was having the same problem at about 4 days out. I'm 9 days out now. Try adding 2 oz of apple juice (no sugar added) to 6 oz of water, and put some ice in it. I received this piece of advice from an ER nurse who had gastric bypass three years ago. I can tolerate it much more easily with the juice. The Propel Zero was way too sweet, and water was too heavy. The NUTs at Johns Hopkins said to try very cold things if you can't stomach room temp fluids. That also works better for me. Each day gets a bit better.

    Weight loss stopped

We could go into all kinds of possible reasons why your body is doing what it is doing, but the bottom line is that it doesn't matter. You are fine. You are experiencing what most of us do, and it passes. I've grumbled about slow weight loss and little stalls since about the 3rd week after my surgery, but look at my ticker. What in the world do I have to complain about? We all get frustrated and scared when the scale doesn't budge. Try your best to ignore it, follow the guidelines, and trust the process. You are gonna be great!

    Stalling

    So I.was 245 now.see the.scale says 239 how.can I speed this.up or how can I stop stalling
  9. My diet when like this 1 day of clear liquid hospital) 1-3 weeks of full liquids (second hospital day, after one week, incorporate at least one pureed food to see if you can handle it) At 1 week and two days, I attempted tuna, no water or mayonnaise. It held down. The next day, I had tomato soup. It held down good. Next day, I had tomato soup with some tuna in it. I recently tried cream of chicken and held it down perfectly. Next stage is soft foods, which I'll attempt to try Thursday or Friday. After that, I goto my first healthy weight visit instead of the surgical team visit and we can maybe move to solid foods. Every doctor/but is different!
  10. I made a promise to myself to not cheat for 1 year. Zero exceptions. No early moving up of stages. No "just a bite" of something. I weighed and measured everything. I am glad I did. Three years later and I am still well under my goal weight and I control what I eat instead of being controlled by it. I doubt anything bad would have happened if I did cheat, but why go through all of this and then screw it up? The first year after surgery is the time to break old habits and start new ones. Eating something you aren't supposed to eat is the old habit, so don't do it no matter how harmless it seems.
  11. I am 12 days post op and the struggle is REAL!!! I have a few more days until I can start pureed foods but it feels like that’s an eternity away! I knew this wasn’t going to be an easy journey but I never realized how much I obsessed about food. Any suggestions on what to try first? I’m looking forward to eggs and mashed avocado.

    Fitbit?

I've been looking to get a FitBit before my surgery (late Dec/early Jan - undecided yet). Any one have experience with this gadget? I love metrics and data, so keeping track with something like this pre/post surgery (maybe 1 or 2 weeks pre) would be interesting. scale that goes with it, but not sure if that's overkill or not. My wife might not go for it, but I could ask Santa ...
  13. It took me almost two weeks to feel like myself again. You might could do it, but I think having to come up with clear liquids, or any kind of liquids while staying in hotels will be difficult. Not to mention that I would be scared to be away from my surgeon for that long so close to post-op. I had problems with constipation and my sutures popped through my skin and were exposed. I was pretty worried. I'd hate to be out of town and have to deal with something like that. You just never know. I'd want to err on the side of caution.

This has nothing to do with my band, I just need to get it out... I have a Chihuahua that I love. The hubby and I decide to start looking for a brother or sister for her. He knows someone giving away a Chihuahua at the end of march. In conversation with Mom, I mention the free dog and how we are excited to get her. Last night, she says "dad wants the dog." HUH? So today, I call Mom and she says Dad is excited about the dog. Again... HUH? I never once offered her the dog and now they want MY dog????:frown: I offered them Wiley and the neighbor got them a dog that they said no to and she is stuck with. So I am now conflicted. Do I give my parents the new dog? Do I tell them that we want the dog? I want to give them the dog but hubby wants to keep the dog (I also want to keep the dog). I have spent all night on petfinder, craigslist, shelter sites, you name it, I have been there seeking a dog for them. I am concerned that if I find them a dog I will be stuck with it like their neighbor. I have 3 cats and a dog and one dog on the way. I dont want 3 dogs. (Okay, I do but I gotta draw the line somewhere). On a band note, I go for my 2nd fill on saturday. If it hurts like the 1st fill, I am so gonna punch Dr. F. in the chops. I have been eating fine but not exercising and that is my downfall. I refuse to step on the scale but I feel like I am gaining not losing. I am a bit frustrated but I have no reason to be frustrated if I cant get my tub-o-lard self motivated enough to look at the treadmill much less use the damn thing. I had a salad incedent last saturday... I ate too much too fast and felt like I was gonna die. When I over-eat, I get sleepy. I started to fall asleep but my chest felt like it was gonna rip open. I dont ever want to feel like that again. It was wild (in a bad way). I ate salad all week and have not had any adverse reactions to it. I love salad and I hope I can continue to eat it. Okay, bitch session over.:tt2: I am stressed out but going to bed now. I hope I can relax enough to sleep. 4:30 comes way too early for my liking. Thanks for letting me vent... SIGH:leaving:

    Migrating Pain Post Op

Tomorrow I will be 2 weeks post op, up until a few days ago my stomach was hurting quite a bit, that finally went away. Now my lower back on the right side is the only thing hurting.
  16. Hi ya'll, My surgery was August 19th, and Today I am 10 weeks out. Currently I am down 70 pounds! It's so surreal! I haven't gotten anymore energy than before yet, and I have only dumped once trying to drink milk (even after taking a Lactaid chew) It was horrible! I need to find a milk that taste similar to real milk! Almond and soy I totally hate! So aside from feeling great, eating well, and swimming in all my clothes lol, I wanted to know if anyone has tried hot cocoa?? If so what was the outcome and what kind did you use.. Approaching winter time it's one of those things I love when I'm cold and curious if we can handle it.. I have drank nothing but water since the day of surgery and my pallet is craving something else so bad. please let me know. thanks so much
  17. I lost 21 lbs in the first 11 days and then nothing for a couple of weeks after that. Then I started losing again. Your body is going through major trauma right now and needs to adjust. Six weeks is a long time to be on full liquids - I was only on them for 11 days - but each surgeon is different. At only 400 calories your body is in starvation mode and it will be hard to lose. But just keep doing what the doc tells you - the weight WILL come off!!! The sleeve works for sure, I can tell you that!
  18. Doctors' philosophy on this vary from a few weeks to never again depending upon their experiences. The basic issues are: Healing - alcohol is somewhat corrosive to the stomach lining so one needs to give things a chance to heal first, Alcohol tolerance - rapid stomach emptying means it tends to hit faster, and with less (i.e., a "cheap drunk") so care must be taken there, Transfer addiction - we can no longer satisfy whatever addictive tendencies we have with food, so it is easy for transfer that addiction to something else, like alcohol, drugs, shopping, gambling, etc. What was a casual habit of a glass of wine with dinner occasionally can easily turn into full blown alcoholism. Liver health - starting as morbidly obese, or worse, our livers are not usually in very good shape to begin with (hence the "liver shrinking" pre-op diets that are often prescribed) and the liver is further stressed from its role in metabolizing all that fat that we are rapidly losing. It doesn't need any more stress from ingesting a known liver toxin like alcohol (not a judgemental thing, just our physiology at work). My surgeon is also a biliopancreatic (livers and pancreas) transplant surgeon, so he is in the no alcohol as long as we are losing weight camp (and ideally forever) and indeed we sign a contract to that effect - he doesn't want any of his bariatric patients coming back onto his transplant table! Those are the issues in play, and some aspects bother different surgeons to different degrees, so they have different policies. Check with what your surgeon's policy is, and decide for yourself - we are all adults here.
  19. Hi Everyone, We were told to use sippy cups immediately after surgery and to avoid straws in order to prevent air from getting in to our stomachs while taking sips because that can cause discomfort and fill you up quicker. In reality I did not use the sippy cup. I just drank carefully and I didn't use straws. As for Protein, at about 3 weeks post op I started getting nauseous on my whey isolate shake. I was drinking Dymatize whey isolate (chocolate, it didn't foam). I recently switched to ISOMorph 28 pure whey isolate (strawberry, it didn't foam) and the nausea went away. Just today I tried a Isopure protein infusion (the tropical punch). It comes out thin (like crystal light) once the foam settles ( about a minute) and tastes more like a lemonade, but it was a nice change. As for the shaker bottles I have two I use, but I find the whisk type ball works much better at breaking up the powder!

    Finally Sleeved

CONGRATS! Can't wait to join you next week. So you are 3 days post op, are you still on clear liquids?
  21. Hey Gina, I was banded the day before you, I have experienced exactly the same, my weight loss stalled as soon as I started on mushies and I have really battled to keep it down since then despite adding excersise. I have to wait for my first fill until next Monday so another week of fighting to go. You should be proud of yourself, you have done really well with your loss. I had a total of 70 pounds to lose and have lost 21 to date but I've stopped weighing myself as much so as not to get too disappointed. I keep reading that this is really common and my nutritionist told me not to worry about my loss during the healing period, it will happen when we get to the right level of restriction with our fills. Keep your chin up, you made the right decision and its really easy to think it's not working but it obviously is......look at what you have achieved so far. There's definitely more to come off yet!! Best wishes R
  22. Only 2wks post op, you're still very swollen and the restriction is greater than when your swelling will go down. Don't concern yourself with calories right now. While losing you'll want to be between 450-850 cal/day and not really anymore than that. The first two weeks is nothing but liquids. You shouldn't worry if you can't finish you liquids all at once unless they aren't going down at all. Sip your liquids...you can't take big swigging gulps of liquids like you used to. Give yourself time...I'm 5 weeks post ok and experienced the same thing. Even still I can only drink about 1/2 skin fast protein drink when I drink one. I usually save the other half for later in the day.
  23. So, i'm sooooo careful about charting my weight daily and looking back over the last 4 weeks i've realized that i lose the most on Sunday and Monday, which coincide with the huge amount of dancing i do on Saturday night into Sunday morning... but for the days i'm just walking... zip!! SO... from now on i'm going to forget about walking... it uses a lot of time for very few calories burned... instead i'm going to focus on higher intensity aerobic exercise!!! UK Newbie

I had my band on 2nd June. With the 10days pre op diet and 3 weeks after I lost 2.5 stone. Which in my world is AMAZING. But two weeks with a stall I am now begining to get a little freaked out. What happens if it doesn't come off. I am reading the messages each day and gathering a lot of strength from them. Reminding myself this is ok, everyone looses at a different speed. I have to believe in a years time I will have lost weight!!! Keep following the plan and know you are not alone. I'm also from the UK. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
