    Comorbidities

I thought the same when I went for my first consult last March and fully intended to be self-pay. My BMI was also 37 and I have Anthem BCBS. But my center encouraged submitting to insurance based on my high blood pressure and blood work that came back pre-diabetes. Several weeks later, I was approved. Shocked, but very happy to have saved $15K+. It is worth submitting to insurance...you have nothing to lose as you are already prepared to be self-pay and a lot to gain. Good Luck!

    Post op no appetite

I was one of the rare people who DIDN'T lose their hunger after surgery, but most people are not hungry for a while. Even though I was hungry, food didn't taste good and it was uncomfortable to eat. That lasted about 3 months; now at five months out I can enjoy food again. Try to find things that are easier to eat. I eat a lot of ground turkey, because solid, dry meat is harder to eat. You can make ground turkey, or chicken, or beef into so many recipes: I make chili, taco meat, spicy chicken lettuce wraps (I just make the meat part; I still can't do lettuce), ground turkey stroganoff... So many options. Fish may be easier to eat than other protein sources; just don't over cook it. Chicken thighs may be easier to eat than chicken breasts. Good luck!

After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???

I had sleeve, but I think the issues are similar. 1) Throwing up after surgery isn't nearly as unpleasant as before surgery. 2) I have been nauseous a lot and have thrown up a number of times after taking my multivitamin, so I take it at night and then have a snack, like a protein bar or cheese. 3) When I eat too much or too fast or the food is really dry I might throw up but very rarely, like right after surgery I had some chicken from a take out place and the first time it was fine, but then I tried to heat up the leftovers and it was not so good. 4) I am more nauseous and vomit more than most people I know who have had surgery. I'm five months out and it's getting better.
  4. People the consipation is real. Green veggies or no green veggies, fiber or no fiber, laxative or no laxative. The struggle is soooooo very real. What can I do to get some kinda regular???? Hell I will settle for once or twice a week!!

    Secret

youre right. Only my close family members knew about my RNY, and the day of the procedure my extended cousins from the country and outside came pouring in with questions and i became famous for that week. But then you have those that are jealous and think you're cheating. My sister in law didnt have the nerve to say it to my face but to my mom she did Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. Wow! Lots of activity as we are all getting our procedures done! I wanted to update everyone. I had the VSG done in Mexico on 2/3/22. This was the 1st time doing medical tourism like this and I felt safe. I was picked up from the San Diego airport at 7:15am and took a short ride across the boarder. My blood work was done, spoke to cardiologist, EKG, X-rays, and surgery team. I had my VSG same day (around 1ish). Protocol for this hospital is 2 nights at the hospital and 1 at a nearby hotel. While most of my surgery siblings (5 of us total per day) were up and walking hours after, I was not. I struggled a bit more. In fact, I nearly slept the entire 2 nights I was in the hospital. We were then taken to the hotel for the last night. I ordered the liquids “Bariatric tray” from room service but didn’t really touch them. The one this I made 100% sure I did was drink water. Again, while some of my surgery siblings explored Tijuana, I slept. I was taken back to the San Diego airport for my flight home on Sunday. I asked the airport for a wheelchair (this was a must for me!!!) hubby picked me up after my short flight back to Az. My plan was to take Mon and Tuesday off, returning to work Wednesday. I spent Monday sleeping and Tuesday becoming more and more dehydrated all day long. Wednesday I located an IV hydration office and felt like a new woman. A few things I have learned about my body in this process: When I need to rest, my body will force it. Dehydration is NO joking matter. My pouch does not like cold liquids (took me a bit to figure this out, I am stubborn) Pain is a sign, listen to it. I am starting to get my full amount of liquids in now 😁 and am moving on to adding protein. . . Slowly.
  7. I have my surgery scheduled for 3/2... The anxiousness is keeping me up at night wondering if I am making the right decision.. or am I setting myself up to get sick for the rest of my life. I have been doing my research and reading posts from many different support groups all over the internet and there are some horrific stories out there are people that can't get food down.. or they throw up every time they eat meat ETC.. for me I could deal with it coming out the other end not to be graphic but the thought of vomiting for the rest of my life has me absolutely petrified and questioning should I take the chance.. Please share your experience from having gastric bypass... I understand the first couple weeks will be rough.. And I can imagine that others have struggled because they possibly didn't follow what their doctor recommends.. But to think you do all the right things and you still get sick has me worried... Whatever insight you can share and tips you can share to possibly avoid this with a greatly appreciated.. thanks in advance God bless! Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. Much appreciated! I’ll jot that down. You are looking fabulous by the way. I’ll keep you posted following surgery in a few weeks. Thanks so much!

    Secret

Recovering from gallbladder surgery took me about 2 days (just had mine out on Thursday) and isn’t a great cover story. If you are getting a hernia repaired that’s a)not lying and b) much more similar in terms of recovery since it’s a rougher surgery and affects what you can eat for weeks. I didn’t tell anyone at first and then had complications post surgery that made it really obvious it was a bigger surgery than I had let on. So now my family knows. But I’m still glad it kept it to myself at first. Arguing with me pre surgery is more fun than after I’ve already done it and lost 50 lbs. 😅

    Secret

You are not alone in wanting to keep it a secret. I kept it private as well. The only person that knows is my husband. I've been kind of a hermit during Covid, so that helped because I wasn't going out much to begin with. I did tell family and friends that I had adopted a healthier eating lifestyle. That way, they won't be too surprised when they see me....well they will be because I've lost weight, but they will assume it's the new, healthier eating habits, which is not a total lie. As far as work, I simply said I was getting a procedure done, and I would be back in approximately four weeks. I work from home, so they won't see me anyway.... Good Luck to you! ♥
  11. I am 2 months post op RNY and I don’t have any appetite. I’m struggling. I had surgery then6 weeks out got Covid so I’m sure Covid had some play in it. But even now eating just makes some So uncomfortable. I am staying hydrated but I am struggling getting protein. I’m truly trying. Forcing myself to eat. Has anyone else had this happen? Any tips? Thank you!

  13. I was woozy and needed help so walk at first. I was “out” 6 hours for surgery because the hiatal hernia repair was very difficult they said. I walked every hour during the time I was awake. I drank things even when I felt nauseous. The nurses gave me meds for nausea. The pain was minimal but I’m not a sensitive person. I drove myself home the next day. The hardest part at home was getting out of low seats. It helps to sleep sitting up, or at an incline for a few days or weeks if you had GERD. Keeping up the fluids and walking often helps all the other issues. I had asthma complications with the anesthesia so bring your meds from home, and speak up about your needs while in the hospital because once you leave no one will help without a full work up in the ER. So, if you have moderate to severe asthma, ask for intravenous steroids or intravenous vitamin A to help you get over stuff dripping into your lungs while “out.” Ask for what you need for your health!

    Gastric sleeve

When I had my initial consult the PA held up a picture of a cartoon stomach being separated from a body and said something like “in this surgery we cut most of your stomach out, we remove it from your body and throw it away. It’s permanent, and there’s no going back. Do you understand that?” At the time I felt like it was kind of aggressive but after being on the forums a few years I think that surgeons should maybe spend more time in initial consults doing that sort of discussion. This is a one way trip and people should really be getting that information a long time before preop, not wondering it a few weeks after surgery. That’s a failing on the bariatric office and surgeon.

    Insurance Through Postop

Hey felt like checking in because I am now 1 year 3 months past surgery, and I weighed exactly 165 this morning, still at my goal weight. Maintenance has been going really well, still considering another 15 lbs but I’m also happy at this weight. Still loving life as a “normal weight” person.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

WoooHOOOO! I just received word a few minutes ago that my insurance has approved my surgery, and that the clinic (which has been backed up for weeks due to COVID) has tentatively scheduled my RNY for March 3. That's only three weeks away! I've been working toward the surgery since January 2021, so this news is more than welcome. I'm crossing my fingers for no more delays, and an unremarkable procedure.

All week I had no appetite because my dog passed away Sent from my octopus using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. Im over 3 years out and im still cold. Not as frozen popsicle as i was was the first year and a half (man, I remember walking down the frozen food aisle at the grocery and thinking i was going to freeze to death) but still colder than everyone else around me (right now im wearing a hoodie and wool socks and Mr is wearing shorts and is shirtless…and no he is not overweight by any means). I stopped rapid weight loss a long time ago, so I attribute this to just an all around less insulation issue (i.e., fat)
  22. First, I don’t take birth control (i got Mr. fixed lol) so cant really comment in that aspect. BUT…I went from having no periods before surgery (i thought i was in menopause!) to having a 2 week long period soon after surgery (which was weird cuz my periods never lasted more than 3-4 days) then became clockwork regular ever since. Im 3+ years post op.

    Work Accommodations

Again, as others have said, you will feel much better in two weeks after surgery than you do now. Also, as others have said, the accommodations you may need are specific to your work tasks and how strict your environment is. I worked from home for the first month then started traveling for work again. Your main limitations will be on what you can eat and because it can be hard to drink much at once right after surgery, so if you can eat, drink, and go to the bathroom any time you want, you should be okay, unless you are really tired or foggy.

    Periods (women only please)

I would be hesitant to use the implants. They tend to be associated with weight gain, more than the pill. My surgery center didn't say I would have to use additional BC, but I don't have sex, so maybe they didn't discuss it? I know a lot of people have used Mirena (IUD) after surgery and done well with it. I also used to take BCP continuous cycling because I was sooooo miserable when I had my period. I hadn't had a period in over a decade going into surgery. They told me to stop the pill to reduce the risk of clots. I stopped 6 weeks before surgery. I am now 5 months out from surgery and I STILL haven't had a period despite being off birth control entirely. (and thank you @pintsizedmallrat. I identify as gender fluid and that is one of the reasons I worked so hard not to get periods.)

    Successful post op gastric bypass

Mine was a revision, the band had apparently slipped so it was a 4 hour surgery. I had a catheter anyway but never knew it. I woke up in my own hospital bed. Felt a bit bad but could quickly get up and hobble about to the bathroom and whatever, holding onto my IV. Home the next day. Pretty awful 3 days, walk walk walk, gas exiting noisily. Day 4, the clouds parted and sunlight came through. Day 5 I felt elated and went on a 2 hour walk. Since then (I'm on day 15) it's fine. You're young and healthy so it's as certain as it can possibly be you'll be fine and it'll work well for you. WALK!
