    July Sleeve

Had surgery on July 25 and the last week I have not lost anything but still watching what I eat and just eating a few bites of my meals. I guess the 3 week stall is really. But i also feel that i have not lost much in total 20 pounds 10 pre and 10 post. Just keep telling myself this is more weight loss that i have seen in a long time. Just hoping that i start losing again and that this surgery was not done for nothing. Sorry just had to vent. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Hair Loss

This is from an article that I read recently. I am considering buying the vitamins she mentions. its a bit long but well worth the read. I went to an excellent and brilliant doctor who my best friend uses. He practices Oriental medicine & uses a different approach than other doctors; he doesnt want to treat the problem but find out the cause, then fix that. He ordered a full blood work up like all the other doctors do but this time he added something no other doctor ever did and that was my ferritin levels & my iron saturation. My iron came back totally normal, as it always had BUT my iron saturation was 14% and my ferritin level was a 34. There it was, MY SMOKING GUN. I ran home & googled low ferritin levels and there it was; the most common reason for losing hair is a ferritin level below 70. Why the hell this never came up before when I searched I dont know but whatever. nothing was going to get me down now because I found out what is wrong with me so now I can fix it. I did ask the Dr why I have low ferritin & he said its not important why or how, lets just get my iron stores up. I eat red meat at least 3x a week so it was pretty shocking that my iron is low but for some reason my body wasnt able to store it. I started on 325mg of FERROUS SULPHATE 2X A DAY , after 1 month my blood was tested & my ferritin level went to 41. Did I notice any hair improvement? A tiny bit maybe instead of losing 1,000 hairs a day it went down to 950! Then I decided to search for a better way to raise my levels & thank the lord for the internet because I found out that the best iron with the greatest level of absorption is FERROUS FUMARATE so I started myself on 325mg twice a day AND with each pill I take 500mg of L-Lysine & take it with a big glass of orange juice if I have to take it with water then I add 500mg of vitamin C.then I waited, but not for long because within 2 weeks my dream came true. The shedding really slowed down. but I thought it was my imagination /maybe I was going insane because I was at my breaking point with my damn hair. i saw my best friend who said, holy **** your hair looks so thick on top, I think its working she asked me to take it down from the clip but I wouldnt. Not yet. Another week passed and it wasnt just a dream or wishful thinking but I could tell my curls were longer & when I showered it wasnt ALL over my body. Its been about 5 weeks since I began taking my ferrous fumarate cocktail and I am wearing my hair down. I can hardly believe it. I just took a shower and hardly anything came out. A lady at Target came up & asked me if I permed my hair or if my curls were all natural, and I had such pretty hair.TOTAL SHOCK!! I COULDNT EVEN THANK HER BECAUSE I WAS SPEECHLESS. I havent had a compliment on my hair in about 14 years.14 LONG years! So this is my story with a very happy ending. All it took was a simple blood test followed by 4 weeks of supplements and the nightmare has ended. Every 30 days I will get my blood tested to make sure I dont go into iron overload but my goal is to get my ferritin levels over 100 and keep them at about 120sih. If I had read a post like this 10 years ago I would have avoided a decade of hair despair. And if your ferritin levels are fine, keep searching for your smoking gun because it is out there
  7. I have no investment in Facebook, and don't like some of the things I hear, but have been a member of several of its Pyloric Stenosis groups for 10 or so years - and learnt so much! The biggest and best groups are "closed" - you have to join them before you can "see" or access and post to their discussions. Well over 1,000 adult and infant PS survivors are members and form an impressive range and depth of experience. WLS for people with scarring from the infant and adult PS surgery has been discussed several times.

    Calorie intake

I am 2 weeks out, get in 350-550 calories a day. I have only lost 10 pounds since surgery. Also, my surgeon found a small, cancerous tumor on my stomach, which was removed with my surgery, and I see an oncologist next week. It was a surprise find.

  10. So I started at 304lbs ( 21' 10 ) for the uk'ers and blimey did I feel every pound! I have lost steadily and I am now 245lbs (17' 7!) so very chuffed, and cannot believe how much my life has changed. Here are a couple of before and afters, one at my heaviest and the other, two days ago for clarity. I can't really see a massive difference myself but others have told me they can definitely see it, can you?

    Ordering bridesmaid dress?

I honestly, wouldn' t go down more than one sixe. The larger you are the more you have to,go down to change sizes,, it's not fair but that's the rules. of ladies clothes. But as we get smaller the sizes change quicker, there might only be 5 pounds between,a 10 and 12.

    Ordering bridesmaid dress?

I had gastric bypass surgery on 8/10 and am the maid of honor in a wedding in mid October. How many dress sizes would you say to go down so my dress isn’t crazy large?! I’ve lost 13 pounds is less than a week too.
  13. Two week post op today and it is my first day back at work. Feeling great to be back, but EXHAUSTED already and it’s only 10:30!

    I got cocky

I cannot eat two eggs at 10 months! One. I still slime if i eat too fast, or one too many bites. You have to slow down and learn to quit early. It takes practice, I know!!!! You will learn quickly or suffer more...lol We have all had that lesson.

Has anyone tried any types of bread??

Even at 10 months out, I eat one piece of rye toast w avocado with my egg for breakfast. It has to be toasted. Bread just balls up to gunk in my sleeve if not toasted and feels really uncomfortable to me, wraps don't work either. I eat a corn shell taco, a few triscuits here and there, and one square of thin crispy pizza. That is it for bread products. I don't eat pasta, have had a tablespoon of rice. Rice is tricky, it actually expands more as it gets wet. I really don't miss sandwiches per se, at first it felt weird but is just routine now. For road food, I carry P3 meat n cheese packs, cold cooked chicken thighs, pea pods, hard boiled eggs, cherry tomatoes. I really don't tolerate lettuce very well either, slimey and wants to come back up no matter how well I chew it - that I do miss. I use thin bell pepper strips in my taco instead. I don't think I am suffering much while I wear size 10 jeans, and looking forward to size 8, then 6......lol

    Tummy Tuck without Muscle Reconstruction

@Matt Z I'm a planner, so I wouldn't get this done until next summer. I also want to try and lose another 10-15 pounds before then, but I want to know my options and pricing. I've considered going to Mexico to save costs, but it scares me to death. My luck, I'd be one of those patients who ends up on a TV show of plastics gone wrong. Anyway, thank you for replying. Glad to see I'm not the only one considering this option. By the way, there is a surgeon in Texas who feels that the muscle reconstruction is actually not really necessary and unduly painful for the patient. He always does tummy tucks with the repair. I thought that was interesting.

    Calorie intake

One year out! 157 pounds lost. I (generally) consume about 1400 calories. It does vary, but I wouldn’t have gone under 1100 in several months. I am pretty tall - 5 foot 9, but I do very little exercise. Like a bit of yoga and barre. I’m in my thirties. This is something that you have to play around with. During a stall, I freak out and drop to 1200. Then I might go up again. Ive has an excellent month (down about 10 pounds, which is great for me at this stage of the journey). Even so, I do think about dropping my calories down to speed things up but there’s no guarantee it would work. I also eat fruit as a snack and I would have to stop doing that. Also, I want to be able to maintain my weight. I can’t live forever eating only 500 calories a day. Its not just about calories though in my experience (I’ll brace for some people to respond with the usual calories in vs calories out arguement). It really is about what you eat. I avoid bread, pasta, too much processed food, high sugar food, milk chocolate. I do eat dark chocolate every single day. So although it’s a high calorie diet, I generally follow a pretty moderate Mediterranean diet. I have messed around with the Keto diet, but I like eating fruit. My body feels healthier. The bottom line is that you have to talk to your nutritionist and come up with something you can comply with.
  18. It’s pretty common. There’s a huge gap between larger sizes. I had to lose about 50 pounds to drop a size when I started and now only about 10 pounds. Also, a lot of us are wearing clothes that are stretchy, or maybe even a little tight at the beginning of our journeys. So we have to drop huge amounts to get to the next size. Dont worry, it will happen!
  19. I am 10 weeks out and have just been looking into my BMR. Apparently my BMR is right around 1700 calories for my weight and height. Right now I am talking in about 700-900 calories a day so way below my BMR. How does this work after having surgery? I don't think I can even get close to 1700 calories in a day. Do we not worry about BMR after surgery or should I be upping my calories? P.S. I have been losing slowly.
  20. Hi @ttjmom. It’s a long story. Sleeve has been awesome for many, just not for me. If you care to read it, here you go... 3rd Bariatric Surgery: I realize that most people will probably gloss over this topic...because for most 1 surgery works and is enough and if you fall into this category, please know how fortunate you are. This is not my story I am 5'8. In 2007 I was 273lb's and miserable! I got a Band. Following 13 fills and unfills the best I lost was 60lb's, I never achieved restriction, and unfilled to have 2 kids. All weight returned. In an unrelated accident my port flipped, and in 2015 at 265lb's I was revised to a Gastric Sleeve (Also had my gallbladder taken out, a Haital hernia repaired and the band removed). I lost 60lb's in the first 4 months and then...stopped loosing. At 205lb's I would have been happy with my results, but then, I felt no restriction and started to regain! Fast forward almost 3 years to today...I have developed GERD pretty bad and I've regained most of what I lost back! My stomach feels hungry every hour or two, I could always eat WAY more than my sleeved friends, and once I got myself full, it would not take long for the deep primal hunger to return. I have no relief from hunger. Especially at night, I'm ravenous! I became a grazer! I felt that the Ghrelin was back with an Army to fight me! A 80% international traveling job plus unlimited access to food in the best restaurants around the globe did not help. I have felt dejected, humiliated, like a failure, angry, frustrated and the list goes on for miles, if you are still reading, you probably know how I feel. And indeed, It's not just about how I look...it's about how I feel. Horrible!! My weight is pressing, intrusive and pervasive. There is no time that I am not aware of it. I have sleep Apnea, I can't keep up with my 6 and 7 year old's and the simple things in life are hard again. Completely demoralizing... After almost 3 years, I finally said "Enough" and went back to a new Surgeon. An Endoscopy revealed it has not all been my fault. My Sleeve was cut too big to begin with! My new surgeon reveled he knows the work of the previous surgeon who apparently was not very skilled at the time and making sleeves too big to be successful. A Bougie 42 was was too big to begin with but in my case, even that was very loosely cut. To top it off, my Sleeve was mis-shapen to begin with as well, setting me up for failure and I have a Stricture in the middle, causing me to have an Hourglass shape. Top fills up, stretches, bottom is hungry, then food goes to the bottom and is still there, top is hungry, in short...a hot mess! Miraculously given the Haital Hernia, GERD, Stricture and botched initial surgery, my insurance (that does not cover Bariatrics) has approved a revision to Bypass on Aug 22nd. I've been combing the internet for Sleeve to RNY revision but such information is not as readily available as 1st timers. I am so nervous...so frightened to go through with this. Scared of Anesthesia, scared how I would do, scared of the 3 week post op liquid only phase. Scared that I will fail again, that this will not work. Some Surgeons (like the Pound of Cure guy say you can only expect to loose 10 - 25lbs on a Sleeve to RNY revision, woa?? ) But I have to try...I want to live a full and vibrant life and not just exist like an Amoeba! This is truly Project last chance. My husband is supportive, but my friends, judgmental and not supportive. and if ever I needed some advice, encouragement, support etc...it's now... Nervous but cautiously hopeful, and very much in need of your support... Ellie
  21. Somewhere probably in the second month I tried a sliver (about 10 g) of some bread that my wife made and it was ok, but it was nothing that I had regularly at that time; our program had a fairly rapid progression allowing most anything liquid or soft for the first month and then anything else after that. Sort of related, we did use saltine crackers occasionally early on to soak up excess acid in a queasy stomach (they're basically liquid by the time they hit your stomach) but they were for that specific purpose as they don't have much nutritional value. At around four months I added it more regularly as part of a small sandwich to specifically add some complex carbohydrate into some pre-workout snacks and that worked very well, adding endurance so that I could swim well past an hour. I typically used a normal whole wheat or multigrain bread, not any of the low carb frankenfood breads. Bread is a take ir or leave it thing for me - I don't crave it or avoid it. These days I typically make a couple of small sandwiches for road food when I travel with the dogs a couple times a month - much easier to have on the way or stop at a rest stop with them than to try to work through a restaurant stop with them, particularly in the summer.

    Milestone Rewards?

This is a nice idea. I don't know if I'll do a bunch of rewards, though my grandmother did a charm bracelet when she lost a bunch of weight. That kind of appeals to me. I might do that. I do have a couple of milestones in mind, though: when I hit 250 lbs - get myself a bike (or maybe I will wait until 220 and get myself a folding bike!) and then I train on that bike until I can do one of those bike tours around another country! no specific weight, but surely by next summer - go kayaking at the local kayak rental place because my butt won't be too big anymore somewhere under 200 - actually go to that other country Hmm. I feel like there were other things I wanted to do that had weight limits attached. (Like maybe going on a hot air balloon ride or a zipline/ropes course. Then again, even at a lower weight, I'll still be a chicken.) Honestly, though? At 250, I think I'll be able to do almost everything I want to, except for being able to fold up a bike. Any loss beyond that is just ... some non-food metaphor that means "super great and very welcome, but not strictly necessary." I might need to lose a bit more than that to feel really comfortable going to an amusement park, say, but that's usually more about size than weight. (I Googled, and Cedar Point has 1-2 adult rides with a weight limit of 220; most rides with limits are much higher.) If I ever want to go snowshoeing, weighing less would be super helpful, to get women's snowshoes. ? But, yeah. Maybe a bracelet charm every 10 pounds. That seems really nice.

    PreOp diet weightloss?

My doc requires that we lose 10% of our initial weight before surgery. I'm 60% of the way to that goal, with a probable surgery date in November. (I'm also doing keto, but also trying to keep it low-fat, which makes it pretty seriously low-calorie as well. It's awful, but at least it's fast! I'll meet my surgeon's goal before the liquid diet and, assuming that's also very-low-carb, I'll probably lose another little bit from that, too.)
