  1. One of the biggest downfalls of the standard American diet is that most of what we eat now is processed in a factory, and we have no recall of what real food tastes like. It just takes a while to get used to real food in it's natural state. Macaroni, bread, and crackers don't grow on vines. You may need to find some Youtube cooking videos or monitor some Paleo or Primal sites like Mark's Daily Apple. Eggface is a good site and is mentioned here often. I was 54 before I ever tasted an avocado, sunchoke, artichoke, asparagus, olive oil, hummus, pomegranate, squash, zuchinni, quinoa, cayenne, coconut milk, almond milk, Greek yogurt, ricotta, asiago cheese, gouda cheese, feta cheese, mascarpone, muenster, neufechatel, dill, pesto, tahini, green tea, kale, eggplant, jicama, tomatillos, shitake mushrooms, capers, tofu, basmati rice, black eyed peas, cannellini Beans, endamame, and prosciutto. This does not include casseroles and Entrees that I was used to, but had never been made from scratch with fresh ingredients. How did that happen? I grew up on TV dinners, Pop Tarts, hot dogs and Kraft macaroni and Cheese because my mother did not enjoy cooking. Eight years ago I met my boyfriend who is a Maltese citizen. He has intoduced me to the Mediterranean style of cooking. Between him and my daughter who became a vegetarian, I have been exposed to all of those foods that I had only heard of but had never tried. Nope, I did not like them all, and I still think tofu is disgusting, but almost everything else is delicious - and I had no idea. So, be brave. Try new stuff and get adventurous in the kitchen. You aren't doomed a life of boiled chicken and unsalted geen beans. I wish you good luck and good health.

    Having the poop issues again

I am vegetarian and never once had an issue with constipation. Maybe the red meat is the culprit.

Feel like I can eat A LOT!

I am sure that different peoples surgery heals at different rates... there is swelling that makes it harder to get food in...when the swelling goes down, we can eat more...and liquids will open up the pyloris and let food out quicker... (why we dont drink with meals) Sliders seem to go down quickly and leave us hungry too. I can eat around 3 cups of soup... (I really have to count the calories) but some days an egg will fill me up. I am at 4 years, and can eat more than I did at a year... I can eat anything, and if I don't list in Myfitnesspal everyday... can easily go over my limit and gain. I try to eat protein first but as a vegetarian, that might be grains or something that might not fill me up as quickly as a piece of meat... and use veggies to fillup the void if needed (almost always). Its a balancing act. I still need to fast a day or two a week to really keep the weight off or get it off if up.

Serious Question. How is WLS the "wrong way"?

I don't plan on telling anyone but my kids and 1-2 close friends in the beginning. My boss is super-thin, vegetarian and runs high mileage daily. She and I have had discussions about vegetarianism vs. low-carb that I do and I think neither of us are going to accept the other's choice as our own I am sure she would be very condescending about WLS and the "easy way out" since what she does works for her. However, I'm pretty sure if she stopped running and relaxed her diet a bit, she might gain a total of 10 lbs. It's just her genes. So people like that really can't understand what we obese people go through - they have no concept to relate to it. Yes, she works hard to be fit, but I'll be working just as hard for me.

    Vegetarians & Vegans

Only five weeks ago. My surgeon/nutritionist say no carbs/sugars for a year, and only limited veggies after two months. No starch or sugar veggies (potatoes, winter squash, green peas, etc). So I pretty much eat pure Protein. Oh, tofu is a great option as well... I've done Thai curry with lots of tofu in broth, and eaten out at Chinese and had tofu and eggplant. Ok, technically the eggplant was a cheat for me, but tasted awesome. I'm down almost 50 pounds thus far. I was vegetarian for twenty years. I started eating meat again because I was tired of cooking multiple meals at a time for my carnivorous husband and kids. I'm also thinking about moving back that way--I'm now eating my own thing anyways.

    Vegetarians & Vegans

I'm no longer vegetarian either, but I tend to eat less meat still. I'm not allowed carbs at all, so on veggie days my diet has been lots of eggs, cheese (low fat sting cheese is my favorite), cottage cheese, beans/lentils, and Greek yoghurt. Looking at my food log, I can get 60-70 grams of protein those days.

    Scared

I don't do fake sugars or stevia. This morning my Protein shake was greek yogurt. Isopure Protein powder, almond butter, cacao (unsweetened chocolate) powder. A little bit of Water to blend and ice to make it cold. I mostly just play with favors I like. Fage 0% Greek yogurt plus Isopure naked whey protein provides a good 30 - 38 gms of protein. It's not too thick because I use water instead of milk. I ma vegetarian and have a lot of food allergies. Artificial food dyes & fake sugars are 2 of them. I use the Isopure because it's just plain whey protein. No added sugar or colorings. If I want to add sweetness I typically use raw honey.
  8. I am 6 months post op at the end of this month and have lost 103 lbs so far. Have about 40-50 more to go to get to my goal. I used to be vegetarian/vegan and find myself wanting to get back to that lifestyle often. Any post op veg people have suggestions on getting the minimum 60g of protein required without the meat and without feeling like I'm having to eat constantly in order to meet that requirement? I'm still at the point that getting 60g is a struggle because I literally cannot eat that much food.

    Zucchini recipes?

I know this is a very late addition to this thread however its Zucchini season here in Australia at the moment and since i made this today i thought i would share as it was delicious ! Zucchini Slice by Julie Goodwin Ingredients 2 zucchini, grated 1 large onion finely chopped 3 rashers bacon finely chopped 1 cup tasty cheese grated 1 cup self-raising flour (Self Rising Flour for our US friends) 1/4 cup of oil (Julies recipe has 1/2 cup of oil - can be easily halved) 5 eggs salt/pepper Method Preheat oven to 170°C (338 Fahrenheit). Grease and line a non-stick lamington tin Combine zucchini, onion, bacon, flour and cheese in a large bowl. Add oil and lightly beaten eggs, and mix. Season with a little salt and pepper. Pour into lamington tin. Bake for 35-40 mins until golden and set. Allow to cool slightly before cutting. Note: the vegetables can be substituted or added to – try corn kernels, grated carrot, shallots, shredded Beans, and leave out the bacon for a vegetarian version.
  10. These are some of the things that are in my regular rotation, along with the things you listed. I didn't put in meat options, since you said that you mostly eat vegetarian. The Rules: Do you follow them?

I think I'm pretty good at following the rules. It wasn't fear of it not working but I am typically the one to have side effects. I was obedient because I wanted to do my part to ensure I had a positive outcome. I am also keenly aware of how much of a slippery slope not following the rules can be. Consequently I constantly try to walk that balance between being reasonable and following the rules. So, this is where I stand: I do the following (95% or more of the time) No grazing No drinking 30 minutes before or after meals Protein first 65 or more grams protein per day Take Vitamins as prescribed 64 ounces or more of fluids per day Stop eating when full No straws (I never really used them to begin with) Nothing carbonated ( I gave up sodas 3 years ago) Go to support group meetings (not a requirement, but a suggestion) Practice mindful eating. However I do eat while watching TV. It works for me because I use it to time my eating. If it's a ½ show. I try to make my food last for the duration of the show. I am also careful to take small bites. Keep a food diary. I watch my macros. I get more from looking at things like sodium and carb levels. I don't weigh frequently because the scale make me crazy. I can usually predict a gain or stall by what I am eating. It's a juggling act because being a vegetarian, I eat a lot of Beans. It's easy for my carbs to get really high, especially if I eat over 70gms of protein. Exercise regularly. I'm currently working out 4 days a week, but I think I'm going to take it up to 5 or 6. I'm finding that I really only need Sunday's off. The rest of the time I'm just bored. I avoid "white carbs" - potatoes, Pasta, white rice, breads & crackers. I have had homefries 2 times and basmati rice once since being sleeved. I have a long way to go so I think I'm going to avoid them until I hit maintenance. I don't do the following Avoid caffeine. I don't drink it every day, but I was cleared after 6 weeks out. I probably have coffee 2 or 3 days a week. Weigh daily or even weekly. The scale drives me crazy and I start living for the scale. This is about health more than being thinner so I prefer to focus on eating well and exercising. Weigh my food. I realize that sounds crazy for someone who studies their food diary like I do, but I just don't.
  13. I'm having similar issues, it sounds gross but if your not Vegetarian or Vegan while perusing Amazon there was one called Carnivor beef protein isolate I can't recall but I believe it was dairy free. Good luck.

    No interest in food?

I enjoy going out to eat with friends now, and being the only one who leaves half the food on my plate while they clean theirs. I never even noticed before how much volume OTHER people eat, and I mean all types of people--male, female, old, young, fat, thin, vegetarian or meat eaters. They finish everything. I notice because now that I am less focused on my meal I actually look up from my plate! I also have solved the mystery of how I got so fat in the first place. I was eating too much food. Sounds so simple but it really was a revolutionary insight.
  15. I agree. I spent the 2 weeks prior to my surgery reading labels and buying samples. Fortunately I am neither lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy. I am vegetarian and allergic to red dyes, artificial sugars, seafood and stevia. You'd be surprised how many things have stevia .
  16. My surgery date is March 6th and I am trying to prepare myself for the pre-op diet. I just tried to have vegetable broth and I hated it! What are my options as far as a meal plan?

    Chinese food ok when?

Are you talking about chinese food per se or americanized chinese style fried fast food? I've has seitan (japanese "wheat" meat for vegetarians) in various asian dishes - with loads of fresh veggies, hold the oil, no rice since I've been on solids without a problem.
  19. @_ItsAun_ Hi there, I'm about 11 days post-op (bypass). I've been vegetarian (mostly) for about two years - completely vegetarian for about six months. I did a diet that sounds very, very similar to that - mine was called PSMF - Protein sparing modified fast, thru a D.O. It was ALL meat for protein, with very little carbs/veggies added. Had to had labs every two weeks, got checked for ketosis every two weeks, etc. Very strict - I did lose about 80 lbs or so over about 6-8 months (I was at about 390 at my highest). After that time, (I wasn't veg at that point), I just couldn't face another piece of meat/fish! I asked about a veg option and was told I could have cheese like once a week instead of meat. I. JUST. COULDN'T. DO IT. Adult son is vegan, so that helped me -- but after going off that strict diet, I did start to gain weight, which eventually lead me to WLS. Post-surgery, I eat cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, and have had a bit of tofu w/soy sauce, too. I'll work up to Beans and more, but I don't see myself EVER eating meat/fish again for so many reasons - personal preference, health, animal health, etc. I don't begrudge others, but it's not for me ever again... That all said, you can indeed be vegan/vegetarian after WLS... PS - tempeh is great too, I espec love Tofurkey brand Smoked Tempeh Bacon - delish!
  20. @gofigure I don't think Vega cares if you add 'reg' milk to it -- I'm vegetarian, and can't tolerate most milk products (cottage chz, yogurt okay), so that works for me --
  21. Heres the thing; The only time I've both felt healthy and was able to maintain my weight, I was vegan. I miss it. My first priority RIGHT NOW is to lose weight (40lbs by October), but I'd like to do it without eating meat and my system is sensitive to dairy, so while I can eat certain things (hard cheeses, yogurt and cottage) without too much problem, I can't have a lot of it. The surgeon wants me to go on a ketogenic diet. I'm ok with that but really upset with the amount of meat they are suggesting. I don't want to drone on and on, because I don't want people to think I judge them for their dietary choices, it just really bothers me to eat meat and the amount that they are suggesting is ENORMOUS! (most meat has no carbs and is high protein) I spiritually can't do that. I'm willing to give in and eat meat several times a week in order to add variation and follow the diet more easily, but that is the most I can do. Does anyone else on this diet have any suggestions of other things I can eat? Because right now the list is dark leafy greens, mushrooms, seitan(if made with vital wheat gluten and not flour) and tofu. I can do a lot with these, but if any one has anything to add, I'd deeply appreciate it.

    African American vsgers!

@@Dee951 - I haven't liked weight watcher's since they developed the point system. I have a team and at every follow up I see the nurse practitioner, nutritionist, and either my surgeon or one of his residents. My nutritionist wants to know I am meeting my Protein and Fluid goal. I use Myfitnesspal. Others have different sites and apps. AT this point I pretty much fill out my food log for the day first thing in the morning. This acts as a sort of guide for me. In the evening I go back over it and make adjustments for anything I did or didn't eat. I eat real food but also supplement with unflavored Protein Powder. I don't do fake sugars or processed foods of any kind. Keeping a food journal helps me keep track. I also am not no carb, but I prefer to stick to complex carbs and avoid "white carbs" such as breads, pastas white rice, etc... I'm vegetarian so some of my protein will be in the form of Beans which are also carbs. As you go along you figure out what works for you. I'm also the person who only gets weighed once a month or whenever I go to the doctor. Instead I take measurements every 3 months. (neck, boobs, waist, hips.) Even during those times when your weight loss slows down you'll see a difference there. Lastly, I recommend you start exercising as soon as your doctor clears you. I know from past history I don't lose as well unless I am watching what I eat AND exercising regularly.

    New here.... A few questions.

The only people I know who have gained back their weight were not following the program. This isn't a cure all. You still have to put in the work by making good eating choices and exercising regularly. My only challenges were finding what I could eat as a vegetarian with multiple food choices and the mental game of making good food choices on a daily basis. Other than that I've had a relatively easy time of it. Despite having a high BMI going into this I had no co-morbs and I had been exercising regularly prior to surgery.

    Pre-Op Diet?

My insurance required a 6 month medically supervised diet before they would approve me. After that I am now half way through my 2 week Pre-Op diet required by the surgeon. I am on a High Protein, 800-900 calorie diet using only the food from my Bariatric Center. There is basically all kinds of special high protein foods available to me, prepackaged dinners, chips, Cookies, Jello, puddings, Soups, shakes, teas, cocoas and protein bars! I never knew there were such protein food products out there! I cannot add any "normal" foods. strictly their products. When I saw the calorie amount I expected to be starving, but because of the high protein levels I am not really hungry. The first couple of days I was "mentally" hungry, but that has subsided! As a vegetarian who tries to stay away from processed foods this diet feels very odd. But its only 2 weeks and I have one down! Good luck on your journey! As BLERDgirl said, check out all your options, Ask lots of questions. I also ready a couple of books on the VGS procedure. The more you know the better it is for you!

    Need practical advice (long)

Not getting Protein in for two weeks won't kill you. I lived on strained Amy's no-chicken noodle soup, vegetarian vegetable broth with a dash of A-1 sauce for flavor and Water with cranberry juice added for the first week. The second week I added Amy's Tomato Bisque, hummus and guacamole - just a teaspoon here and there. By the third week I was eating really soft foods and even though it wasn't in my surgeon's official plan, he was ok with it. I got to skip pureed with his blessing. He made it really clear what I could and could not do, what was myth and what was fact as far as stretching and staples went, and I was fine.
