  1. Hi All, Well there is definately a difference between my first band surgery and my revision. There is no fill in the band at all and I am STARVING. I've been on Clear liquids up until I had some tomato Soup this evening (same consistency at Slim Fast) and that finally took away the terrible hunger pains I was having. I mean, it was actual PAIN. And it's only been four days since the surgery. I am surprised I am so hungry even though I don't have any fill. Anyone else here had a revision have the same experience? The doctor did mention to me I didn't have to be on the clear liquid phase for as long as normal because I would be hungrier, but this is bad! Hopefully when I add yogurt to my diet tomorrow that will help some. Any thoughts? Mae

    Unfilled My Band Today.....

Maybe the reflux was caused by a too tight band. Although we think that the tighter the better it doesn't work like that - tight bands mean you cannot eat healthy, satisfying foods so you start eating high cal, unsatisfying sliders and gain weight. Maybe you should look at having your band refilled slowly, it may still be able to help. If not then I am sure you can revise to a bypass or a sleeve if that is really what you want to do.
  3. "The patient is a 39 year-old woman who initially underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in 2001. A revision was then performed in 2003 for suboptimal weight loss, where the gastric pouch was revised and a Silastic band was placed to the distal gastric pouch. She then underwent revision to a distal gastric bypass. She developed symptoms of reflux and also had weight recidivism. Endoscopy demonstrated stenosis of the distal gastric pouch at the location of the Silastic band. She was taken to the operating room for conversion sleeve gastrectomy, removal of the Silastic band, and hiatal hernia repair. " None of this applies to the OP. Again...No. To remedy severe complications experienced with other weight loss surgeries...it's a rare possible option. For simple lack of weight loss, it is accurate to say that there is no surgeon alive who would convert RNY to sleeve. So again, No. Just No.
  4. Quick recap- I had the sleeve on 2/5/2014 and had tons of complications. I was in the hospital a lot, I had a PICC line and then a feeding tube. It was a rough 6 months. My stomach basically didn’t tolerate food or drink, so there was a lot of puking. Fast forward to needing a revision to bypass on 6/26/2018 due to severe reflux and damage. The surgery went great, I healed well, no nausea. I was rocking it. I am doing great on full liquids but am failing miserably on soft foods. I don’t know if it’s psychological or what. I can do one cheese stick a day if I chew very well. I am okay with yogurt, just small amounts. I get sick on refried beans, cottage cheese, eggs, etc. I just keep going back to full liquids. Anyone else? Any advice?

    I Got my Surgery Date!!!

Yay!!! Super excited, and very nervous of course. It's gonna happen though.. Sept. 14th with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. Revision here we come! I really can't wait, I've been wanting to start over again for a very long time. So, out with the old and in with the new. Instead of a Bandiversary, I'll now have a Sleeversary. I hope I will celebrate this day now instead of cursing it. :scared0: YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. I am just shocked once again about the recent string of Lopez' patients that are popping up with complications. Port infections = Someone contacted me this morning who had this problem. Port revisions = Myself, Donali, and others out there I am sure. Band erosions = I think the last count I remember there were 7 from last year. Incisions infections = Too many to count including myself. Life-threatening issues = One that I know of most recently. These are just a few of the complications I am aware of. Not to mention erroneous information being distributed by Lopez and his staff. Sigh!! IT just goes to show you to be extremely careful with regards to going to Mexico or any doctor for that matter but to be extremely scrutinizing of Mexico doctors because there is NO recourse if you are facing more surgeries or out more money for health care. SIGH!!

    Gastric bypass sleeve

I've had both. I was sleeved in 2016 and did very well but then had some personal issues and put back most of the weight. I had the revision to a bypass last November and feel great and am doing well again. I was considering resleeving however I have had GERD for 11 years - it wasn't cured with the sleeve and it didn't get worse, but it didn't go away - and my doctor strongly recommended the bypass to avoid potential severe issues in the future from the GERD. I take the vitamins they recommend to avoid malnutrition and it seems to be working so far. The surgery for the sleeve is quicker than the surgery for the bypass since there's less moving stuff around, so the recovery can theoretically take a little longer, but I was in the hospital for only one night after both surgeries. The bypass was the "gold standard" for many many years and the statistics show that people with the bypass tend to lose SLIGHTLY more weight than those with the sleeve, all else being equal, but only a few percentage points. And you can certainly lose all the weight you need to lose with the sleeve, those are just overall statistics.

    It's Finally Going to Happen

Congratulations Teshadb. I am about 6 and a half weeks post-op now on a band to sleeve revision. I've read lots of different surgical experiences here on this forum. Some easy and painless and some pretty bad. I guess my experience would fall in the middle of that. I can say that now I am feeling pretty good. Getting back to my old self again. Good luck to you on this new journey and hopefully you have only good feelings. Let us know how it goes.

    Help! Need Advice...

Why not go ahead and have the sleeve and see how you do? A lot of people get to goal with the sleeve. Most insurances will cover a revision if the first surgery fails. So you could have the DS done later if it turns out you don;t lose enough with the sleeve.

    Just another story

I am revising from band to sleeve in Sept. my advice = write a heartfelt letter with details on how under your last insurance you got the band and have been compliant with it and did your best - but the band failed you.. I'd even post other ins. companies policy statements on revision. Then ask ever so humbly that they pay to have the band removed and while the doc is "in there removing the band" that he revises your stomach to the sleeve - then quote all the great things about the sleeve. I'd also write a letter for you to give to your PCP or other doc for him to state the (1) removing the band and (2) revision to VSG is medically necessary.

Can't decide between Sleeve and By-Pass

I discussed it with my Dr and we decided since I was young and active the Sleeve would work for me. I also didn't want a long term high maintenance surgery. Long term the sleeve has pretty low maintenance levels compared to other surgeries. as long as you don't have GERD. If you have GERD, RNY is your only option really, it isn't worth having the sleeve and risking a revision later on.

MY STORY-getting and losing my band

Sorry this all happened to you. A few things I do not understand, how could you go so long without ANY fluids and not die? You are quite lucky. Also, they sent you home septic? How did you survive that? There are several that have had severe infections. Might want to look up TJWood, he just had surgery last week for the 2nd time to remove pockets of pus from his abdomin. Steve is correct, there was another person here that said her doc told her she was rejecting the band because she was infected. That isn't rejection, that is infection. I feel for you, I lost my band too but for very different reasons. I self paid for the band and then self paid for a revision to a sleeve. That might be a better option for you once you are fully healed and back to the life of the living.
  17. I did have a leak. I just replied to your other thread where I discussed my leak. The band caused a lot of scar tissue to develop around my stomach, and the stomach tissue was damaged. The risk of a leak with a revision is higher, but there are typically things that can be done to help decrease those risks. Unfortunately, I couldn't get an unfill, nor did the pre-op testing reveal that my band had caused so much damage. So, while I had a leak, once that I got through that issue, I really didn't have any other complications related directly to the sleeve. I was hospitalized about 6 weeks post-op for abscesses in my abdomen and drains were placed, and I went home on antibiotics. I've always been really open about my leak. I thought your question was more about after the sleeve is done what to expect in the months, years following surgery. The risk of complications increase with a revision than with a virgin sleeve surgery.
  18. Hi everyone, Im new here as this is my second post in 2 days. I have a question regarding GERD. Im 32 been pretty much overweight all my life and the small time (about 10 years ago) when i was in great shape, i did not suffer from gerd. I also have a small hiatal hernia that may or may not need to be repaired. I do not take medicine for the Gerd, it really doesn't bother me to be honest. I have been reading that preexisting GERD prior to the sleeve can worsen. So much so, that many times the surgeon will suggest a revision to the bypass. The bypass scares the life out of me and i just dont want to do it. No disrespect to bypass patients, But I rather not surgery than get a bypass Studies can only show you so much and Id really like to hear some of your first hand experiences. Did it get worse, Better, same? Also, did any of you get the LINX installed? If so, howd did that go?

    New to the group

Hello MsMook, welcome to VST!! I'm a revision patient as well. There's a lot to know, so it would be more helpful if you might give us a little background on your situation. Don't be shy - when it comes to the band there is bound to be someone here who has lived what you're going through, in all kinds of complications scenarios. Ask lots of questions... we are always willing to either lend an ear or help out.

Thx so much ladies. Well my story is not that far off from most. I gained most of my weight after I had my son in 2008. I am an asthmatic and have been put on steroids constantly which adds to my weight gain. I had lapband surgery done Feb 2010 and lost around 55lbs but gained most of it back. I have done tons of research on the sleeve and sleeve plication and now I am looking into having a revision.

Revision From Band To Rny And Why.

Had band since 11/08. Fluid in, fluid out, little loss. Had 2 ugi with little dialation 3 years ago. Decided to get it out this year. Saw a different physician due to insurance. Had another ugi. Didn't see anything wrong but lower abdominal erosions due to H. pylori. Scheduled for lap removal of band and revision to rny 10/22. Start preop diet monday. Preop testing 10/17. I was a cash pay also. So I started a seeing my pcp every month for 6 months and joined WW. I knew the insurance would want me to do that. So I was proactive. I got approved on the first try. I don't see why they wouldn't approve you.
  23. Do I understand this correctly? So this would be your second revision? I’m 3 weeks out from revision bypass surgery 4/18/21 so far so good so much easier then sleeve
  24. Im in Utah and looking to have the DS as my revision to my original bypass 16 years ago, who and where did you go if you do not mind me asking

Bypass or sleeve...will the answer come to me?

It can be overwhelming but I think knowledge is key! I am in the revision process and thought I knew a lot 1st go round. I am learning even more. I am definitely doing group this time. I didn't get a chance last time and I think it is beneficial.
