    When does it get better?

You need to do as your pcp says and eat. First find things to drink, you sound as if you are dehydrated. Water and milk and thinned protein drinks are safe starting options. Have you tried protein water? Have you tried broth? Find the temperature you can tolerate. I managed hot drinks better than icy cold. You need to eat and the calorie content will not matter for a couple of weeks. Once you get some calories in you will start to feel better. To start you eating again, can I suggest yogurts, high protein tinned or homemade soups [blitz it if you need to] mashed potato and gravy, Custard, instant porridge. and soft baked crustless quiche or cheese souffle. Aim to eat [ or drink your food ] a good amount of foods every 2 or 3 hours. Eat whatever you can, its critical to you getting and feeling better Lack of protein will make you weak. Lack of liquid makes your throat slimy. You feel nausea because you may not be drinking enough. Getting hot or in my case shivery cold is because we have overeaten. Getting the foamies [spitting out foam] is because you have put too much in your new stomach in one go. Eat or drink smaller sips until you get a hang of your limits. Lastly, have you been tested for a stricture? because I had similar problems until about 10 months out because they found my internal stitch line was still swollen. I just had to do the best I could until it settled. You should be getting more help from your team than you are, when did you last speak to them?
  2. Try a rosemary oil hair mask for 10-15 minutes 2 x a week and massage your scalp. It's helped me a lot. My hair is long it goes down to my butt and it was getting really thin, I lost a ton of hair. I started doing the mask and in about 2 weeks I had new growth. I still do the mask 2 x a week to prevent any more hair loss. I hope this helps [emoji171]
  3. I had a VSG 12 years ago. I was 54 years old. I can make the math easier. I am 66 - quickly approaching 67, this spring. I was miserable, recently divorced, single parenting a teenager, working.... and my weight had hit 320. I was, at that time 5'3", and morbidly obese. I went on my own diet, and lost just over 20 pounds, went to the Doctor and requested weight loss surgery. I did their 12 week mandatory pre diet and classes. I was approved, and got my surgery. Fast Forward.... I lost weight to about 175 pounds. I went from a women plus 28 to a 14/16 petite.... depending on the clothing. I also Lost my younger brother, mother and then my father during those last 12 years. And I gained back weight. I weighed 220..... So Just before the pandemic, I decided to try to lose 10 pounds in a year. Thank goodness for my VSG. My body remembered how to do this. I lost the ten pounds in the matter of a couple months. I decided that since I had issues with regain, I would pause and maintain the weight loss for at least a month or more, before starting to lose weight again. I wanted to LEARN how to maintain the loss. Each 5 or ten pounds, I would stop losing ON PURPOSE - and maintain the weight I was at. I lost back to 173 pounds. I weighed that is graduate school. 1983. I maintained my weight for the past year between 172 to 175. A couple months ago, I decided to try to lose a bit more. The scale was reading 175 more often then I wanted. So.... I did it again. Even more slowly. Right now, I am doing my " lets maintain this for a while" thing.... and weigh 164 I think I might have weighed that in college... like maybe 1978.....before going back for the Masters Degree in 1981. My old Navy size 16 petite that I bought two years ago are too big. I just bought TARGET jeans in a size 14. Age does weird to a woman's body, as does loose skin.... But I can tell you this.... my VSG is still there. I won't ever be 'skinny' - but I am basically barely overweight (you get a few extra pounds on the SMARTBMI scale adjusted for age !) and I am more than thrilled. Do I eat perfectly ? Nope. I have a treat every darned day. A couple cookies or a small dish of ice cream.... or a bit more carbs than are necessary... But I am so flipping "normal" - I am not the heaviest human at work. Someone asked me to "slide" in to sit at a table that was close to the wall because I could "fit". I stood there staring at them..... If we have take out delivered to the office, I participate. I order something that I can eat for another two meals after having lunch. Challenges ? Plenty. Did I manage to raise a great kid, who is doing well ? Yes. Have I figured out how I need to eat to "DO ME" ? Finally. At 66 years young !!! 2004 pic.eml2022pic.eml I tried to put in pics 2004 and 2022 320 pounds and now 164 pounds

How far out from your surgery are you? I am 10 months post op and can’t eat anything with more than 10-12 grams of sugar.
  5. March 1st. I've been waiting for a date since 2019. Finally, it's here. Sent from my SM-A528B using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. Hello Lindsay. I have had Fibromyalgia so many years and before my sleeve, I took 8 co-codamol a day and one , 10 mg Amiltriptyline for it. Now I can exercise so much more, I find I need much less pain meds. I just take 2 at night and the amiltryptaline, one hour before bed. I have had one spell whilst sleeved that made me take more pain meds. I still have all the other fibro symptoms to deal with but if I can get some sleep then I can cope.
  7. I’m 2 weeks post op on a sleeve to bypass revision. Sleeve was 10 years ago. Never wanted this bypass but reflux was persistent and my doc said, “we’re going to have to do this eventually might as well do it now while your young (52) and healthy.” I had a complication 5 days after surgery with a bowel obstruction at the Juijnem site because of post op swelling was in hospital on only IV fluids for 3 days. It cleared up and now at least my bowels are doing what bowels do on a daily basis. That’s all good, I’ve even lost 16 lbs post op (pound a day). BUT I’m really mourning food in general, solid food in particular and just variety. I’m on full fluids and next week I get to add thinned cottage cheese, ricotta and and oatmeal (all thinned). But I just did the math and it won’t be till April that I can eat solid food. Yes I’m talking to a therapist but I’m just really regretting all of this. I was basically happy with my weight preop (could have worked harder to lose 15 lbs. but I didn’t really care). Now I’m down 35 from before the two week preop Optifast and I just want my life back. I feel like I’ll never be able to enjoy food again, have sushi roll, eat popcorn, a hot dog at a ballgame. One by one I don’t care about any of those menu items but taken together and it’s a normal lifestyle that is now gone and never coming back. This really gets me down.

    September surgery buddies!!

Yes, crazy good to wear those smaller sizes! I've been losing so fast that I've actually dropped through some clothes I bought after surgery. I still struggle to see it myself sometimes, but going from a tight 44 to a lose 38 waist in pants makes it pretty obvious. I've had a few major stalls as well, but am officially down over 100 pounds now. I'm obviously really happy about that, but also a bit shocked at how fast it's come off. @Hope4NewMe don't count on maintaining a 10 pound loss per month. For the math geeks, most of the time weight loss follows a pattern called exponential decay. It looks something like this: The important takeaway is that the closer you get to goal, the slower the loss.

    September surgery buddies!!

Don't know how many of us are still left reading these forums but I miss you all! Just hit my 4 month mark and I'm down a little over 50 pounds, yay! Before surgery I was just hoping that I could hit that goal before my cruise and I did! I have another month before I sail so maybe I'll hit 60 pounds down and that will be the best. Weight loss has slowed down but I did expect that. I'm hoping to keep losing at about 10 pounds per month now which is what I did this month and I also lost 7 inches. My hair is definitely thinning so I cut my almost waist long hair to shoulder length and I actually love it. Scary to see the loss at my temples but I know its temporary so I'm trying not to stress too much. I had my blood tested and all of my levels are good but they do want me to take a little more iron because they want me to be above average. I finally tried on a smaller pair of pants and was surprised to see that I could fit into a 14 and its not even tight. I haven't been this size in over 10 years. My brain still thinks I'm the same size to its nice to be able to put on clothing and see proof of loss. I had to buy ring adjusters because my wedding ring was getting scary loose so now its tight and safe again. I can't believe how much has changed in just 4 months and I'm so happy I had the surgery. I hope you all are well and come back and visit sometime lol
  10. 1. I had not restriction on Straws. Used them without any problems right from day one in hospital 2. I got an adult dose of vitamins from the supermarket, Dieticians recommendation. Changed to ones without iron because of nausea. I take calcium tablets. Every 3 months I have a vitamin B12 injection which really helps with my energy levels. 3.I was tested for swelling of my incisions but nor leaks 4. Sodium is never an issue in the UK. I could have broth 5. I could not have a shower until my staple were taken out at about 10 days. They didnt want the dressings getting wet. [ strangely I was given new dressings for after showers, so I ignored the first set of instructions and showered] Pack a blanket if its cold outside, I was freezing. Take a pillow to hug in the car ride home. You can put it under the seat belt. Bumpy roads are the norm over here and a pillow did help. Lip balm and biotin was very useful
  11. Good question but no real difference here either. With the exception that when I buy clothes, I often think I need a bigger size. That's my own perception (or deception). Through the years though, I have found it interesting that no one seems to remember I was exceptionally heavy until they see an old picture. I avoided the camera when I was over 300 so those are far and few between. My first surgery was 2008 so it's been awhile since they saw me heavy. I stayed around 150/160ish the past 10 plus years. I do remember I was glad when the questions stopped. I never liked the extra attention.
  12. I'm just 10 months post-op, and I feel the same way. I don't recognize that person. Others say the same thing. Even though I have been fat basically my whole life, this "new" me feels more like the "real" me.
  13. Hi all, I had the gastric sleeve done in 2015 and have lost around 100lbs (depending on the season) lol. Ever since I was able to start eating solid food I would get full really fast with little food (to the point of feeling sick and sneezing), after 10-15 min. It would feel like my food would drop and I would be able to eat the rest of my meal. Has anyone else felt this?
  14. Hello I’m dealing with something i wonder if anybody else can help , i was sleeved March 2022 so just about 10 months post op . I have successfully lost about 110 pounds . I haven’t had many complications i did get a gallstone recently but other then that nothing but for the past maybe 6 days i have been experiencing extreme diarrhea as soon as i eat i get a really bad stomach pain maybe 5-10 minutes after then boom diahrrea immediately and it’s Every time i eat i have a diarrhea and then times in between so maybe 10 plus times a day I’m on the toilet . Has anyone else experienced this ? If so please let me know what i should do or what you were told .

    Regained it all

I had VSG over a dozen years ago. Started at 320. 5'3" and 49 years old. Had surgery at about 300 lbs (sorry, don't remember exactly !) But I count EVERY DARN POUND ! I lost to 165; but never could hold that. No plastics or skin removal. Maintained at 175 to 180 for many years. Then had major surgery, lost my mom, younger brother.... working, raising my own child, and caregiving. I gained to 220. After losing my dad.... I kind of gave up trying....for a while. 5 years later, I decided to lose 10 pounds in a year. That was about 4 years ago. I lost the ten and then another and kept going.... but slowly. Every 5 pounds I would stop and just figure out how to maintain that loss. Because I realized what I missed.... in all those years was HOW TO MAINTAIN - I could lose, but not MAINTAIN where I got. So I would add in a small piece of cake as a treat. Did that do it ? NOPE. A small treat every day ? NOPE. I had to learn what would add a pound or two. We have to adjust to our new insides, and to our bodies and to our new ages and stages of life. We are not static. We change. Our medical needs change. See your doctor. Meet with a nutritionist from time to time. Pay attention to not feeling well. Get it checked out and bring up your surgery and what you are eating and drinking. I did lose back to 173 -175 and kept it there for more than a year. Spent the last 6 months losing another 10 to 12 pounds. For whatever reason it has come off easier this time. I haven't weighed under 165 since college in the late 1970's. I am almost 67. You can get through this. Slowly and do not compare yourself to anyone else. Put on those pants you wore when you started the journey and see how big they are on you now. YOU HAVE moved forward. You ARE doing it. On your own time. Which is always the RIGHT TIME.

    Regret Doing This

I had my bypass on 8/31/22 and I've lurked in this forum even before that, as I was getting ready. I just joined today to reply to this post. I hope you are feeling better today, LivBee! I had a lot of complications after my surgery, including a stricture that closed to the size of a pinhole, keeping me from even being able to swallow water at one point. I had to have two post-op dilations on 10/12 and 11/14. If I'd had to go back in for a third, they were going to put in a temporary stint, which they did not want to do. I was weak, dizzy, and malnourished for months after my surgery and yet I kept pushing myself to do things like I had the energy of someone else. I passed out in the shower once, and almost passed out on several other terrifying occasions away from my house. I had so much regret, but I kept saying, "I'd do this again. I'd do this again." The reason I kept saying that? I was losing the weight, I was coming off of the T2 diabetic medications, my insulin needs were becoming less and less (I've gone from 50 units of insulin a day pre-op to 20 units a day, currently, and no other maintenance meds). I've gone off of blood pressure medications completely. Now? I do have the energy I was pretending to have before. No dizzy spells. My pre-op clothes are comically large. I could chase your twins around no problem. And I do believe you will get there too! Every body is different and every healing process is different. Like you, I also had the misfortune of trying every diet and exercise program out there with limited success before gaining everything back - and like you, I was approved for surgery because of my comorbid conditions. We are going to be brand new, healthier versions of ourselves, with all the hard work and struggle that common society thinks WLS patients skip. You keep it up, mama. Keep pushing, keep thriving. Keep smiling. You've got this!

    Noom Weight loss Program

the last 20 lbs are a BEAR to get off. Soon after year 1, I was losing around 2 lb a month, even though I was working pretty hard at it. I don't know if any diet programs are going to any more successful at taking the last 20 lbs off quickly, because the fact is, you are likely eating A LOT fewer calories now than you were when you started. I've gained 10 lbs this year, and am working like a demon to get it off. But I'm losing a measly 1/2 lb or so a week (so same as when I was trying to get the last 20 lbs off after my bypass surgery). Reason being - back when I weighed over 300 lbs, it took 3000 (or maybe even more) calories to maintain that weight. Right now, at 160-ish lbs, it takes about 1600 calories to maintain my weight. To lose a lb a week, you have to cut 500 calories a day (or burn up 500 calories a day - which is A LOT of exercise!). To lose 2 lbs a week means cutting 1000 calories a day. That would put me at 1100 kcal/day if I wanted to lose 1/2 lb a week, and 600 kcal/day if I wanted to lose 2 lbs a week. Ah...not happening ( and also not healthy - the only people who should be eating 600 kcal/day should be under medical monitoring, like we were in the early weeks and months after WLS). On the flip side, when I was eating 3000 kcal a day at my highest weight, I could have easily found 1000 or even 1500 calories a day to cut and still been eating at a healthy level (I'm not saying it's easy - dieting never is - but at 3000 calories, it's very feasible to cut 1000 or 1500 calories - not so when you're only averaging (and maintaining on) 1600 cal/day). So by cutting 1000-1500 calories/day, that averages out to about 2-3 lbs a week. But again, cutting that many calories NOW would be impossible for me. long way of saying - it's hard to get those last few pounds off because there are only so many calories you can cut and still remain healthy. I've said this before, but back when I weighed over 300 lbs, I'd mentally roll my eyes at these barely overweight women at Weight Watchers meetings who'd moan and complain about how hard it was to lose 10 lbs. "Ha!", I would think, "try losing 200 lbs!". Now I totally get it... I'm not saying don't try. Your efforts WILL work. But your weekly losses will be in ounces now, not pounds.
  19. I checked my own progress at 10 weeks post op and I'd lost 22lb since surgery date. The best thing to do is to discuss this with your surgical team to see what they think. Good luck
  20. Look at it this way... you lost more than 10% of your weight in 10 weeks. That's a huge accomplishment! You're doing great! We all experience self doubt and wonder if we're on track or if we're losing slower than normal... that's incredibly common and I went through the same thing. But, trust me, you're on track and doing fantastic! You lost 10% of your weight in 10 weeks! Celebrate that!

    Lower Bowel Obstruction

This is happening to me right now! Had my revision surgery (sleeve to bypass) on 1/9 and ended up in the ER last night 1/13. Now I’m admitted to hospital. NPO (no fluids or food by mouth). They think it’s swelling at the new junction with the jejunum and had me drink contrast to track it’s flow through my GI track over the next 24 hours. So far not suggesting anything more invasive. But this sucks. Pain has mostly subsided but I’m pretty sure that because I threw up everything above the blockage. I haven’t pooped since the day before surgery but I am farting a bit which they say is a good sign. This sucks. I never wanted this revision, but was convinced that with my reflux if I didn’t do it I was far more likely to develop Barrett’s esophagus and then all the bad things that could come from that. So 10 years after my sleeve which admittedly I didn’t lose all the weight I could/should have on I now going through all of this. This sucks!
  22. HW: 563.5lbs(April 22) SW: 449lbs(Halloween 22) CW: 404.1lbs I feel like I'm not where I should be for my size. Am I losing weight too slow or am I where I should be @ 10 weeks post op?

    10 years out From Sleeve

January 2023 I got very ill in September of 2022 - had a tear in my hiatius - a hiaitial hernia tear - that was bleeding into my chest area. No symptoms until I was so weak and tired that I couldn't function well. Ended up needing transfusions and emergency hospitalization to figure out what was wrong. 5 days in patient with no food or water, just IVs. Lots of testing and then came home on lots of iron pills and vitamins. Three weeks later had a gastric bleed.... more hospital stay of 4 days and endoscope and found out that I have some, well, a lot of issues in my "normal sleeve anatomy" - lots of areas that were bleeding. No actual ulcers, just ... issues. Now will be doing weekly iron infusions - no more oral iron; and meds to help heal my stomach lining. I lost 10 pounds in the hospital, but was warned to eat well and drink lots of fluids and to put back at least 2/3 of what was lost in the hospitalizations as a good portion of that is blood building. I craved macaroni and cheese. Not something I even usually like much ! So I ate that and high protein, lots of water and saw my doctors on a weekly basis. I, of course gained weight back as I healed. But decided to be VERY VERY careful in what I ate as directed by my doctors to not piss off my gut - and then added in what I knew to do for my over all health. My 13 year old tool was still there and of the appropriate size - I had NOT "stretched out" my sleeve in 13 years. I was assured by the gastro doc that it was fine ! So I took the 2 total pound weight loss from surgery and then post op required gain.... and have lost 6 more pounds in 3 months. I am out of the 30s BMI for the first time in ...... more than 40 years. Yes, BMI of 29 on the Smart BMI for my age. I am doing much better, will probably need monthly iron infusions on a regular basis; as the oral iron is not working for my irritable gut. But I am a seemingly healthy almost 67 year old, now wearing a size 14 petite slacks to work ! The last time I did that .... I was about 23 years old.... I have almost lost half of me.
  24. Hey! No problem. You’re more than welcome. Thanks for your well wishes. 🤗 No question is bad, ask away. That’s why we’re here. Support. 🙏🏾 I chose the DS because the sleeve & DS were once one procedure & in some cases, they still are. I figured there’s more “practice” with this one. 😀 Also, my therapist had the full DS switch procedure done & she randomly shared while I was in therapy one night discussing some of my challenges with weight. She’s done well & hers was several years ago. Lastly, I trust my surgeon’s statistics. He performed my sleeve. He’s the head of the bariatric program at the healthcare system he works for. He also teaches there, so his advice helped after he shared what I should expect from bypass or switch. I still have a lot of restriction from my sleeve, so he won’t do anything to my stomach this time around. I’m not sure if this is what some may call a “mini bypass”. Don’t think I’ve heard that term before. I lost 90 lbs from 2016 - 2017 following my sleeve. He told me to expect to lose 50-60lbs with this surgery. In 2016 I asked him how the sleeve would effect my weight insecurities, & if weight would still be an issue. He was very honest and said, “you’ll always have a goal to lose 10 more lbs.”

    Weightloss month 1

Absolutely what NovaLuna said. But, since I am a chronic comparer, if it helps, I lost 17lbs in the first SIX WEEKS post op (I do calendar month losses so I bunched the fist 6 weeks together). Probably about 12 or 13lbs in the first 4 weeks? I had a stall in my second week (first of many!) that lasted about 10 days. Hope that helps and good luck on your journey.
