  1. I've been doing the same thing! The thing is, I've never been able to stick to a diet or make a life-style change that would allow me to keep the weight off. I even gave myself a few extra months to lose weight after I was approved for surgery. My surgery is scheduled for 12/14, so I don't have to tell you how that worked out. I with you the best of luck in your WLS journey. HD
  2. Five years ago I lost 80 pounds (for the third time in my life) by changing what I ate and exercising like a maniac. No diets, no programs, just changes I thought I could live with long term. I was very happy with how I looked and felt, and then pound by pound I put it all back on. AGAIN! It was devastating to my self-esteem. I decided I deserved all the help I could get to lose the weight again, and this time to keep it off. Pre-op I lost over 20 pounds in about 5 weeks, and I discovered what a difference high-protein, low-carb makes in terms of weight loss and sugar cravings, but it never made me doubt my decision to go ahead with the surgery. So here I am, just over 4 months post-op, getting within spitting range of my lowest weight from last time (which took me over 18 months to achieve). I've lost over 80% of my "excess weight" by my surgeon's calculations. I haven't had to do much clothes shopping, just digging out clothes that have been in storage for years. I know maintenance is still going to be a challenge, but I think it's doable this time, and I have confidence I can succeed. I enjoy my workouts again, and I have SO much energy. I am seeing fairly substantial hair loss, and have been since almost immediately post-op, but I'm blessed with really thick abundant hair, so nobody notices it but me, and it's temporary, and a price well worth paying.

    Scars?

Mine look like someone took a little kinfe point to me in four places - they are all horizontal and mostly just look a little bit like my cat attacked me or something. The 5th is longer, a true veritcal incision, and right above my belly button and very hard to see. I have a previous scar on my abdomen below my belly button from exploratory surgery when I was 6. It is very long and noticeable and is the reason why I would never ever get a bikini, even if I were down to goal weight.

    You CAN lose too much

@@Mrs.Grace I'm so sorry for your losses. It's hard to express sincere thoughts to internet strangers, but I really do feel for you and wish you a little relief as you deal with so much sorrow. As for the weight loss, it probably is a pretty unusual phenomenon, particularly since you are able to eat a lot. I know what you mean about bones. I think they are much more prominent in massive weight loss patients because it seems we lose all of our subcutaneous fat (at least I did). Even at my weight, bones are prominent, so at a BMI of 18, I can imagine they must be more so. People have given some good advice, and I think I would track my calories so you at least have a record of what you are consuming. It's information that might help as you sort this out. Someone suggested trying a different dietician and/or doc, which is probably a good idea. There is an explanation for this, but I think we already know that it's not an obvious one. You're going to need to advocate for yourself.

    You CAN lose too much

@@Mrs.Grace I really hope you can get your doctors to take you seriously and figure out what is going on. It's sad that you've had to resort to eating so horribly and still can't manage to put on any weight.

    You CAN lose too much

You have to remember that many of us bariatric weight loss patients lose our weight rapidly. Due to the high speed of our weight loss, our skin begins to sag and our faces look fallen. Now, everyone is different. There are so many factors that come into play with ones outcome (starting BMI, age, genetics, etc.), but you need to give your skin's elasticity time to catch up. My family would criticize me and mention that my face looked fallen. And, even now, when I look back at pictures of myself within the time frame of that first year post op--even past that first year--I can see what they are talking about. My face and neck looked sickly and tired. My turkey neck hung. I am now over 2 1/2 years out and I can honestly say that your skin will retract. It just takes time. So, even though your family's comments are hurtful--despite that they are coming from a good place--remember, they are seeing the after effects of rapid weight loss. Once you stabilize and your body begins to stabilize, you will start to look healthy again. I will say that I also began practicing facial expressions that a lady advised me on. There are a series of facial exercises that one can do to help "tone up" your face. Here is a website that has a few of them, but a quick search will reveal many more: http://fitness.mercola.com/sites/fitness/archive/2010/05/18/the-best-exercises-for-your-facial-muscles-to-stay-looking-young.aspx It is a long journey. As cliche as that word is, it is true. This is a process. A time consuming one at that. However, it is one that hopefully leads us to a better and longer lived quality of life.
  8. Hello, well tomorrow is the seminar and I'm at work trying to think up things to ask, but I guess the nerves are destroying brain cells. I cant seem to think...I only got 3 questions written down... 1. In your experience have patients that have PCOS and pre-diabetic find it still extremely difficult to lose weight w/ the band? 2. How many patients have had problems w/ band and have to have it removed? 3. How many bands have you done? They sound TOTALLY LAME dont they?? I know there is tons of stuff I want to know and ask, but for the life of me I cant think of them...damn it!!! LOL Please help me!!!

    what to do?

Hello all of you bandsters! I am having difficulties losing anymore weight. I don't know what is going on. I have lost from 313 down to 241. Which is ok; however, I have just quite losing weight. I thought about going and getting a fill; however, I can barley eat now, if I get a fill I will not be able to eat at all. Does anyone have any sugestions? I mean they said "if you can eat a chicken breast then you need a fill" I may be able to eat that much once every two weeks but most of the time it is 1/2 to 1 cup of soup....not the thick and chunky kind...the hot and sour or broth based kind. Give me some advise PLEASE!!!!

Aetna 2 Year Weight Loss History

Yeah I know you have to either do the 6 months or the 3 months supervised whateveryouwannacallit, but it also says you must provide a 2 year or 24 month history of prior office visits (not necessarily for weight loss...could be a cold, whatever) just as long as your weight was documented..at least that's what my surgeon says and it also says in Aetnas weight loss surgery guidelines
  11. Hi everyone, I lurk on this site once in a while, but I have not posted much. I was wondering if anyone out there decided to have skin removal surgery after his or her weight loss. Why or why not? If you did have the surgery ... did your insurance cover it? was it painful? what was the recuperation time for you? Thanks :-).

    Walking Vs Bike Riding

Just wondering if anyone chooses bike riding over walking? Very keen on riding, but also don't want the gas pains that walking is supposed to help with - am supposed to be getting surgery in a little over a month, would love to get back on my bike and do my 20km to work in the morning & 20km back in the evening! Currently (pre weight loss) I drive 1/2 way and ride the other half everynow and then - seems like a waste though, I want to do it all dammit! So does riding help with the gas pains? Or do I really have to walk to get rid of them? Ideally, i'd like to start this 2-3 weeks after surgery - too soon? Thanks team!

Aetna 2 Year Weight Loss History

I have aetna and I definitely did not have 24 months of weight loss history. I only had the 6 months that they required. I got a letter from one of my other providers stating that I have been trying to lose weight for 2 years. It was like 2 paragraphs stating my bmi and height. my history of weight loss attempts and methods. I work for the providers office that is doing my surgery on August 28th. I got approved in less than a week. So at least get the doctor who is not the primary care to write a letter stating you been trying for 2 years. hope this helps.
  14. Over the past few days I've been really emotional. I feel like I'm letting go of lots of emotional weight I've been carrying. My procedure is just a few days out. I'm a little nervous, but the emotions don't seem to be about fear. It's a deeper purging. Anybody else experience this or something similar? If so, what do you think was happening? When did it pass?

    What's your beauty secret?

I have to second bio oil. I also live dove skin firming lotions for the body. For wrinkles on the face, start a good skin routine. At night, the first step is cleansing - this will help your products actually absorb into the skin. If you wear makeup, consider cleansing the skin twice. There’s no need to spend much on a cleanser - just make sure you have one! After that, you need a gentle face exfoliation product (it’s like a light chemical exfoliant, don’t use anything grainy. Find a product with AHA or BHA or that says it’s glycolic acid) I like Alpha H Liquid gold and Paula’s choice BHA skin exfoliant. Depending on the product (or your skin sensitivity), you may only use the exfoliant every other night. Then you want to find a good serum. If you have age spots you might go with vitamin c, if it’s wrinkles then I would try Olay or Estée Lauder or anything with retinol). The other thing to consider is moisture, get a product or moisturizer with Hyaluronic acid. I have a range of serums and night creams depending on how my skin “feels”. If it’s daytime, you will want to cleanse and then wear a sunscreen SPF. You can then put on a hydrating moisturizer (to save time you could get a daytime moisturizer with sun protection in it). Never go on a walk outside without a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. About has once a week, I also use a skin mask. You could buy one or make one at home with your own natural ingredients. Also make sure you are taking your vitamins and drinking lots of water. Think carefully about your makeup too. Filling in your eyebrows can make you look younger. Get a shimmer for your cheeks. You want a light glow without looking like a glitter ball. Use a lipliner to give your lips definition (they can get thinner as we get older). I avoid matte lipstick. Something with satin or a touch of gloss/shimmer can look more youthful and less dry. Consider avoiding heavy black eyeliner if your eyes are very lined and wrinkles. Brown, gray or even navy applied with a light touch can be more flattering. Use lots of lashings of mascara. Finally, don’t worry about wrinkles! If you look at before and after weight loss photos, people in the after photos always look younger and happier! Getting healthy and doing something good for yourself will make you happy and that will shine through!

    Crybaby

I just had to share b/c I got caught off gaurd, and maybe ya'll can relate. Went in yesterday for my 4th fill (banded Aug 16). I'm down 51 lbs since starting weight about Aug 2nd. So, I really wasn't sure if i was going to need one, feels like i'm pretty close to green. So, everytime I've went in, every 4 weeks I've lost about 12 lbs. Well, I knew it wasn't as good this time (Halloween candy from the office, menu testing for my restaurant, etc...I had a few hurdles this month). So, she told me I was down 9 lbs over the past 4 weeks. After talking to the Doc a little, i told her I would feel guilty if I got a fill, b/c i just wasn't really sure if i needed it or if i was just being selfish for not losing as much as i had b4. She starts telling me i am doing great, and not to be so hard on myself, I will always have hurdles...blah, blah...I do realize this, I do. But then I started talking about me being scared that once i eat say a piece of candy, i'm the type of person that just wants to keep eating it, and just how scared i am about going back to the way I was...I don't want to be FAT anymore!!! I started crying!!! What the hell??? I was shocked!! I didn't know i was really having any of those feelings. Lol, of course I started laughing and apologizing! The doc said I had no idea how many people are always crying in her office!!! I'm just not normally that type of person. Anyway, we settled on a .2 cc fill, she felt good about doing that (half of what i got last time) after talking a little bit. I don't go back until 8 weeks now...I'll cross my fingers!! She gave me a big hug when I left and called me a "crybaby". We laughed b/c she knows i am as sarcastic as her, and i know she cares about me. So, I guess all in all, it was a good day.

  20. My goal weight was set by my primary Dr. And then the nutritionist. They felt going by the BMI chart was unrealistic. They both said those charts do not work for people who.have a large muscle mass under the fat. They also.both agreed they wanted patients to loss the excess fat and not much muscle. Their goal for me sets me at 31% body fat. Most surgeons say that sleeved patients will.lose 50 - 70 % of their excess fat within 2 years. I am happy to say so.far I have lost 72% of my excess body just shy of one year. I still have 39 lbs to lose. So getting to the goal wieght they set will just be a bonus. Best Wishes

    Excess Skin

I have excess skin, but would I call it an issue? No Do I have a lot? No I can pinch half and inch on my thighs and arms. About and inch on my hiney. My torso is where I held most of my fat as I think most guys do, so that is where I have most of my extra skin. I can pinch a good 2, 3 inches just about anywhere there. I also have the turkey skin under by chin. 2 years post op, I will assess where I am at with the excess skin. I am relatively young (45), but I was a smoker and have gained and lost weight over the years, which will cost me in the skin elasticity department. I'll wait until then to worry about what I am going to do, but until then, I am going to work out and get my fluids. There is a great post that has been stickied concerning excess skin. I'll definately take the turkey neck over the high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heavy breathing climbing stairs ...

    Defeat and Despair

I agree with melunruh you know what you need to do! Take this new move and new job and make it a whole new process! I had the lap band 8 years ago and had lost 80 lbs. I was down to 202. My job and location changed and I didnt have those people in my life that knew my journey so I wasn't getting the encouragement I was before. I started gaining weight and now I'm back to 252 and going to have the band removed and get the sleeve. The modivation has to come from you. Do you want to be healthy and feel good? Plan your meals, and track it. I use the fat secret app. It is easy and quick to track. My plan is 2 protein shakes and a chewy meal, but you do you girl!! You got this!

After years of researching and reaching out to the community, we've been able to build the most comprehensive online resources for all types of Weight Loss Surgeries. Hundreds of thousands of registered members contribute amazing stories and useful information to our pages.

    VSG surgery

I had the Lap Band in 2005. While I lost about 80% of my excess weight, my life with the band was very miserable. I had horrible reflux and later found out that I had been living with a slipped band for years. I had gastric sleeve April of last year and am very happy with my decision. No significant complications and I feel great! One thing: when I had my sleeve done, my surgeon said that the procedure took him at least an extra half hour while he sorted through the scar tissue from the band. From what I've read on this form, that is quite common when you see revision from lap band. For me, all that scar tissue and extra work to deal with it made my initial recovery a little different. I saw others talking about feeling great and being up walking right away. I felt like I had been hit by a Mac Truck! I couldn't tolerate the laps around the nurse's station and was lucky to make it about 20 feet down the hall. I stayed an extra night in the hospital and was a little more on track by day 2.
  25. Hello everyone! I am new to this community. I am currently working on getting the Gastric Sleeve surgery. Right now I have to gone to 3 of the 6 monthly weigh-ins that are required and I have noticed everytime they weigh me it's anywhere from 3-5 lbs more then what I weigh myself at home and at my personal trainers. Has anyone else experienced this?? It's very discouraging for me cos I'm working really hard to lose weight (eating healthy, small portions, personal trainer 3x a week)and when the scale at my home or gym says I've lost and their scale at the office says I've either gained or stayed the same. My appointments are always first thing in the morning, so I haven't even eaten anything yet. I don't know what to do about it cos I don't want the insurance company seeing those weigh-ins and decide they can't cover it. [emoji53]
