I want the good and the bad

I'm extremely happy with my decision to be banded. To date, I've lost 58lbs, since March 4th. I haven't had any problems with the band, as some others have. The frustrating bits for me so far have been:- the liquid diet before and after banding PB's (they don't happen often for me, but gosh when they do I know it!!) having to choose to eat or to drink, when going out - I can't fit in both not hitting restriction on the first fill - while I knew that wouldn't happen, it was still a bit of a bummer the rate of weight loss - I'd love to lose faster, but realize that's not realistic for me These things are all things I can live with though and I'm happy to put up with all of them if it means I'll lose weight. I would do it all again, in a heartbeat. Good luck with your decision.

I want the good and the bad

I am very happy overall with my progress. I've lost 30lbs in two months since my op (Jul 6). I am happy to not have to worry if I'm going to be really bloated (from overeating) or not. I am happy to fit into clothes I haven't worn for ages. I am happy that I stay fuller longer. ... But I do get frustrated with the relatively slower weight loss (I noticed that I lost weight only during the liquid phase after op and after fills (I have had two fills so far)). My sis is getting married in a month and I'd love to reach my goal weight by then - which is impossible. But that's not the band's fault - more like my unreasonable expectations. I find it still hard day-to-day because old habits are hard to break. At times when I'm bothered I still want to reach for 'comfort' foods. I am bothered at the fact that I've lost mostly my muscle mass - I tried getting bk to working out but I am way too weak. I get quite upset about this. But overall..I'm quite happy with the band..it just needs a lifetime commitment and lots of patience and lots of venting (on this site - which usually gets you a lot of support and gets you back on track!)....
  3. I started my sleeve funds as well and will transition to sleeve if there is any need for it. I don't ever want to be fat again, ever if I manage to get to my goal weight. I worry about long term effect of the band too and my doctor said that only smokers have the history of band erosion and that I can have my band on as long as 15 yrs
  4. I am at goal after just over two years with my band. I lost 87 pounds & weigh 131 now, you can do the math. I don't want to have my band removed, but I had to have it unfilled. I really pushed it to keep it filled long enough to loss the last 10 pounds. I knew it had slipped. It took work for me to even get enough liquid down. It was one small swallow at a time. I couldn't eat much of anything. I had bouts of nighttime acid reflux, & by the time I reached goal & went to TJ for, at least a partial refill, I had a pretty severe case of gastritis. When the fill doctor looked at the floroscope he said I had to totally unfill the band. Of course I dreaded this, fearing immediate weight gain, but he left me no choice and I wasn't surprised. He also said about 80% of the people whose band looked like this had to have them out, but then also noted a couple of things in favor of me beating those odds. It's been more than a month & the gastritis has almost resolved & after 3 weeks on liquids & mushies, I can eat most anything. I still have restriction on certain things; chicken, salad, sticky rice, etc., but mainly I can eat most anything. The really great thing is that after almost 5 weeks, I haven't gained weight. I have been on Weight Watchers all along. It's just before it was easy, now I have to work at it, but so far so good. I made it to goal & am a Lifetime member. I want to keep my band so I can get it refilled if I need to. I am cautiously optimistic. By the way - I look great, at least to me, and I'm enjoying the heck out of buying size 8 clothes.

    Alvarez, Garcia, Kelly Or Aceves?

I was sleeved 1/9/12 by Dr. Hector Perez in Cancun, mexico. I would recomment him to anyone. He did some of his training at the University of Miami. He has done lots of the larparoscopic sleeve surgerys. I talked to people that he had operated on, one happened to be close to where I live here in Florida. She had nothing but rave reviews of Dr. Perez. I liked the the idea is having it done in Cancun verses other mexican towns. I did go to the Amerimed Hospital, which was as clean if not cleaner that hospitals in the US. Even though I cant speek spanish, we were able to communicate with the nurse's quite well. Dr. Perez speeks wonderful english. He spends time with you not like the Dr.s here do. Arrived in Cancun on Sunday afternoon to a waiting van to take me to the Westin Hotel on the beach, then the next morning they picked us up at the hotel and took us to the hospital at about 5:30 a.m. and by 9;30, I was on the table. My wife had a large sofa to sleep on the she stayed with me till wednesday a.m. when the van took us back to the hotel. We stayed there from wednesday to friday a.m. then the van took us to the airport for our trip home to Destin, Fl. I would recommend the Dr., the surgery to anyone thinking of a weight loss surgery. I have 5 little slits in my stomach where the instruments were inserted and I even have a video of the procedure they did on me. Total cost to me was $8,100.00. The only thing Ihad to pay for was for my wife to fly.
  6. You are only 6 days post op. Give it a few weeks as you will see your stamina increase. Right now your diet is extremely calorie restrictive and thus you will be tired. My surgeon told me to stick to walking and light exercise for 6 weeks. I was cleared for weights but no abs after that. At 12 weeks I was allowed to start ab exercises. Now I'm an exercise junkie...something I definitely was not before surgery. You will get back to your old routine in no time. Just try not to overdo it.

2nd Dilated Pouch within one year

I've been banded since 2005 also. I went through this once and have realised that there's really only so much a band can do. No restriction is ever going to be able to stop you eating when you're not evem really hungry and no restriction is ever going to make good food choices for you. You cant just keep getting tighter forever and at four years out, I decided that the band has really dont what it can for me weight loss wise and any further tightening would be really silly. I find I no longer have that initial enthusiasm, I'm not motived by or excited by constant weight loss as I hit goal a good 2 years ago now and I just dont really have much left to lose. So I find its harder to make good choices. I'm much much more likely to eat junk these days because I can - i dont gain, I exercise a lot, I'm fit and healthy so there's just a lot less reason to avoid it. This worried me and I went and got more fill. But I dont think it works that way, lol. I just got too tight and had to take it out again. that was a year ago now and I havent gained an ounce, so I really didnt need it. I'd really like to see another 10 or even 15lb gone but I really know deep down, that only I can do it and going tighter is not going to help. Its all down to my choices.
  8. You've built it up once, you can again. Lapband surgery or anything else will make it harder for you because you are forced to take a break. I broke my tailbone skating, then my foot straight after, and was unable to do any cardio for close to 6 months. It's one of those things. In fact with the band surgery it was an easier recovery than broken bones because I was walking again within a week, and cycling within 2 weeks. On the aside, I think if you enjoy exercise pre-band, you'll kill the whole weight loss thing post band. Those who do best with the band, imo, are the ones who utilise the satiety that the band gives them alongside exercising.
  9. Pygo, my other sport was eating. I've always loved to exercise, but I've always loved to eat. If I didn't exercise like I did I would have probably been even larger. My weight was beginning to get in the way of my exercise and it was really bothering me. I remember doing a yoga class and glancing in the mirror and thinking 'oh that's good that big woman is doing yoga' only to realize it was me. Hence the lap band.
  10. I got filled 3.7cc also in my 10cc band Dec 4th. I felt restriction for @ 10 days and then was back to none! My doctor told me that it rarely takes just one fill to find the "sweet spot". I have to go and be evalutated again before I can get adjusted. It feels like such a teaser to have restriction and then lose it so quickly! It does give me the confidence, though, that I will be able to succeed this time with my weight loss journey once I hit the "sweet spot"!
  11. Good for you! It is so nice to not have obese on the chart at the doctors office now! My bum, well the lack thereof, was the first thing I really noticed. I am kind of finding it hard to find pants that fit right now because my bum has lost quicker than my tum! It is really interesting because I have always lost weight in previous diets in my stomach and breasts first, this time has been my arms and butt. Are you noticing that you are losing differently than you previous attempts?
  12. I've been doing the same thing! The thing is, I've never been able to stick to a diet or make a life-style change that would allow me to keep the weight off. I even gave myself a few extra months to lose weight after I was approved for surgery. My surgery is scheduled for 12/14, so I don't have to tell you how that worked out. I with you the best of luck in your WLS journey. HD
  13. Five years ago I lost 80 pounds (for the third time in my life) by changing what I ate and exercising like a maniac. No diets, no programs, just changes I thought I could live with long term. I was very happy with how I looked and felt, and then pound by pound I put it all back on. AGAIN! It was devastating to my self-esteem. I decided I deserved all the help I could get to lose the weight again, and this time to keep it off. Pre-op I lost over 20 pounds in about 5 weeks, and I discovered what a difference high-protein, low-carb makes in terms of weight loss and sugar cravings, but it never made me doubt my decision to go ahead with the surgery. So here I am, just over 4 months post-op, getting within spitting range of my lowest weight from last time (which took me over 18 months to achieve). I've lost over 80% of my "excess weight" by my surgeon's calculations. I haven't had to do much clothes shopping, just digging out clothes that have been in storage for years. I know maintenance is still going to be a challenge, but I think it's doable this time, and I have confidence I can succeed. I enjoy my workouts again, and I have SO much energy. I am seeing fairly substantial hair loss, and have been since almost immediately post-op, but I'm blessed with really thick abundant hair, so nobody notices it but me, and it's temporary, and a price well worth paying.

    Scars?

Mine look like someone took a little kinfe point to me in four places - they are all horizontal and mostly just look a little bit like my cat attacked me or something. The 5th is longer, a true veritcal incision, and right above my belly button and very hard to see. I have a previous scar on my abdomen below my belly button from exploratory surgery when I was 6. It is very long and noticeable and is the reason why I would never ever get a bikini, even if I were down to goal weight.

    You CAN lose too much

@@Mrs.Grace I'm so sorry for your losses. It's hard to express sincere thoughts to internet strangers, but I really do feel for you and wish you a little relief as you deal with so much sorrow. As for the weight loss, it probably is a pretty unusual phenomenon, particularly since you are able to eat a lot. I know what you mean about bones. I think they are much more prominent in massive weight loss patients because it seems we lose all of our subcutaneous fat (at least I did). Even at my weight, bones are prominent, so at a BMI of 18, I can imagine they must be more so. People have given some good advice, and I think I would track my calories so you at least have a record of what you are consuming. It's information that might help as you sort this out. Someone suggested trying a different dietician and/or doc, which is probably a good idea. There is an explanation for this, but I think we already know that it's not an obvious one. You're going to need to advocate for yourself.

    You CAN lose too much

@@Mrs.Grace I really hope you can get your doctors to take you seriously and figure out what is going on. It's sad that you've had to resort to eating so horribly and still can't manage to put on any weight.

    You CAN lose too much

You have to remember that many of us bariatric weight loss patients lose our weight rapidly. Due to the high speed of our weight loss, our skin begins to sag and our faces look fallen. Now, everyone is different. There are so many factors that come into play with ones outcome (starting BMI, age, genetics, etc.), but you need to give your skin's elasticity time to catch up. My family would criticize me and mention that my face looked fallen. And, even now, when I look back at pictures of myself within the time frame of that first year post op--even past that first year--I can see what they are talking about. My face and neck looked sickly and tired. My turkey neck hung. I am now over 2 1/2 years out and I can honestly say that your skin will retract. It just takes time. So, even though your family's comments are hurtful--despite that they are coming from a good place--remember, they are seeing the after effects of rapid weight loss. Once you stabilize and your body begins to stabilize, you will start to look healthy again. I will say that I also began practicing facial expressions that a lady advised me on. There are a series of facial exercises that one can do to help "tone up" your face. Here is a website that has a few of them, but a quick search will reveal many more: http://fitness.mercola.com/sites/fitness/archive/2010/05/18/the-best-exercises-for-your-facial-muscles-to-stay-looking-young.aspx It is a long journey. As cliche as that word is, it is true. This is a process. A time consuming one at that. However, it is one that hopefully leads us to a better and longer lived quality of life.
  19. Hello, well tomorrow is the seminar and I'm at work trying to think up things to ask, but I guess the nerves are destroying brain cells. I cant seem to think...I only got 3 questions written down... 1. In your experience have patients that have PCOS and pre-diabetic find it still extremely difficult to lose weight w/ the band? 2. How many patients have had problems w/ band and have to have it removed? 3. How many bands have you done? They sound TOTALLY LAME dont they?? I know there is tons of stuff I want to know and ask, but for the life of me I cant think of them...damn it!!! LOL Please help me!!!

    what to do?

Hello all of you bandsters! I am having difficulties losing anymore weight. I don't know what is going on. I have lost from 313 down to 241. Which is ok; however, I have just quite losing weight. I thought about going and getting a fill; however, I can barley eat now, if I get a fill I will not be able to eat at all. Does anyone have any sugestions? I mean they said "if you can eat a chicken breast then you need a fill" I may be able to eat that much once every two weeks but most of the time it is 1/2 to 1 cup of soup....not the thick and chunky kind...the hot and sour or broth based kind. Give me some advise PLEASE!!!!

Aetna 2 Year Weight Loss History

Yeah I know you have to either do the 6 months or the 3 months supervised whateveryouwannacallit, but it also says you must provide a 2 year or 24 month history of prior office visits (not necessarily for weight loss...could be a cold, whatever) just as long as your weight was documented..at least that's what my surgeon says and it also says in Aetnas weight loss surgery guidelines
  22. Hi everyone, I lurk on this site once in a while, but I have not posted much. I was wondering if anyone out there decided to have skin removal surgery after his or her weight loss. Why or why not? If you did have the surgery ... did your insurance cover it? was it painful? what was the recuperation time for you? Thanks :-).

    Walking Vs Bike Riding

Just wondering if anyone chooses bike riding over walking? Very keen on riding, but also don't want the gas pains that walking is supposed to help with - am supposed to be getting surgery in a little over a month, would love to get back on my bike and do my 20km to work in the morning & 20km back in the evening! Currently (pre weight loss) I drive 1/2 way and ride the other half everynow and then - seems like a waste though, I want to do it all dammit! So does riding help with the gas pains? Or do I really have to walk to get rid of them? Ideally, i'd like to start this 2-3 weeks after surgery - too soon? Thanks team!

Aetna 2 Year Weight Loss History

I have aetna and I definitely did not have 24 months of weight loss history. I only had the 6 months that they required. I got a letter from one of my other providers stating that I have been trying to lose weight for 2 years. It was like 2 paragraphs stating my bmi and height. my history of weight loss attempts and methods. I work for the providers office that is doing my surgery on August 28th. I got approved in less than a week. So at least get the doctor who is not the primary care to write a letter stating you been trying for 2 years. hope this helps.
  25. Over the past few days I've been really emotional. I feel like I'm letting go of lots of emotional weight I've been carrying. My procedure is just a few days out. I'm a little nervous, but the emotions don't seem to be about fear. It's a deeper purging. Anybody else experience this or something similar? If so, what do you think was happening? When did it pass?
