Hi! I’m new here, and new to this lifestyle. I had surgery September 21, 2021 (Hiatal hernia repair, VSG, and gallbladder removed). I had moderate pain discomfort a few days after surgery but then felt great until 2 days ago. On Friday I started having diarrhea (more than 5 times a day). That continued through this morning. I know diarrhea is common after such surgeries, but is it normal to take so long and to last so long? It’s been hard but I feel like I’ve kept myself minimally hydrated to compete with the diarrhea. I have started to struggle getting in my protein shakes and puréed food literally is turning my stomach. Is this normal? I'm not in “pain”, my incisions look great, I’m not running a fever.

How many calories a day?
ms.sss replied to MaureenA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
+1 to the above responses. To your question: At 5 weeks, I was at about 300-400 per day At goal (7 months), was at 700-800 per day 1-2 years post, doing 2000+ per day (LOTSA exercise) Today at 3 years post, at about 1800 per day (moderate exercise) But that’s just me. If you are losing, it’s probably safe to assume your calorie level is just about right for YOU. No need to fix what ain’t broke, I’d figure. Good Luck! ❤️ -
there's your problem - you're believing what you read online. Just don't. NO ONE loses 5-15 lbs a week from weight loss surgery. People who are on shows like "My 600 lb Life" might lose somewhere at the lower end of that range, but even THEY aren't going to lose 15 lbs a week. the average WLS patient (and I am NOT talking people who start out at 600+ lbs, like on those shows) loses somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month - and then it drops to about 10 lbs a month (give or take) after that. And for lower BMI patients, it'll be even lower than that. Yes - you will find people here and there who do not start out at over 600 lbs who might drop 30 lbs the first month, but they are outliers. And NO ONE loses 15 lbs a week (OK - maybe the very first week when most of that is water weight - but after that, no. It just doesn't happen). I started out at almost 400 lbs and lost 16 lbs the first month. 12 lbs the second. And then around 10 lbs, give or take, for the next six months or so. And I lost every molecule of my excess weight - over 200 lbs. You are doing fine. Readjust your expectations a bit. If you are following your program, and you're seeing a general downward trend, you're good. your rate of weight loss is fine and perfectly normal.

July 2021 Surgery People!
Soonlee_W replied to Sammys_VSG_Evolution's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My surgery was July 22. I lost 8 pounds within the first two weeks. I still have only lost 8 pounds. I'm drinking protein shakes. Taking all the vitamins. I'm eating scrambled eggs --anything else-- I can only take maybe 4 bites. I feel like I am eating 1/8th of what I used to eat and I do not understand why I am not losing. I started walking and was proud that I was walking 2 miles (On the treadmill.) Dr. said that "walking is not an exercise. That is why we were born with two legs --we are supposed to walk." Well wishers have questioned --"maybe you're not eating enough." "Maybe you're not getting enough water." "Maybe you're not getting enough protein." "You did not have that much to lose, so maybe it will go slower." "Maybe you're still healing." "Maybe its your thyroid." I don't understand --my brother in law had a two week bout of pancreatitis and lost 25 pounds --believe me, he wasn't worried about protein or water, he just didn't eat much. I am extremely worried that I might be in the 10% who this surgery doesn't work on. Incidentally, baby sister leaves tonight for Gastric Bypass in Tijuana. -
Miracle noodles not impossible. Bought them later in the week I'll try em. Wonder how many days it will take to finish the whole bag.[emoji849] there's all different kinds of these. This just happened to be the one I bumped into first. I bet the plain ones are like the other commenter said and take on the flavor which is great definitely going to try those shiitake mushroom noodles sooner than later. It's really hard to comment on your weight loss without knowing your start weight and height. 21lbs in five weeks sounds pretty good to me though given you lost 27lb pound pre-op. More you lose in pre-op the less likely you are to lose a lot in the immediate post op stages, however, over time weight loss will average out.

I’m just under 5 weeks post op, and feeling very defeated. I’m just now starting to go into solid foods, soft solid foods though, and I have days where I can’t stomach much at all, but my weight loss is very slow. In total, including the pre-op diet I’ve lost 48lbs which is great, but around 27lb was from the pre-op diet. I read somewhere online that the average per week lost after gastric bypass was between 5-15lbs, and I’m definitely not getting anywhere near that, but then 15lb a week does sound crazy to me. It’s disheartening that I lost so much before surgery, but since surgery I feel like it’s been much slower, even though I can’t be getting any more than 800kcals a day, most days much less. Has anybody else experienced slow weight loss this early? Did it speed up? Was there anything you found helped?

I had the exact same thoughts. I had my sleeve done 2 weeks before Christmas. I was still on liquids when everyone was happily eating their beautiful meals. It wasnt the food I missed, I felt left out, i felt lonely. But I can assure you that it does get better! Sent from my SM-G975F using BariatricPal mobile app

No sorry didn’t experience air travel for that length of time. But I’d be concerned about how to manage my food intake on the flight especially at about 3/4 weeks out. Depending upon your plan, you may only be on the purée stage or beginning soft foods & you may find your tummy is pretty sensitive &/or fussy after surgery. You may struggle to eat the food provided on the plane & ensure you’re following your plan & meeting protein & fluid goals. Sorry if I sound negative. Others may have advice on how they managed in a similar situation that soon after surgery.

How many days in the hospital?
T4ME replied to mrsjo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was in for 2 nights, but mine was due to nausea. I work from home an have been off for one week an I’m taking a second. I agree it’s the fatigue an just instantaneous tiredness thy I’m battling right now. Learning to try everything to get protein an water down has helped. -
The first week is always difficult on the all shake diet (my surgeon called it hell week) because you are breaking a lot of your addictions & dependencies (sugar, carbs, caffeine, etc.). Any weakness, headaches, etc. you may feel in hell week are the withdrawal symptoms. The second week is always easier. The shakes will start the ketosis process, burning your excess stored fat for the additional energy your body needs to function & start the weight loss. Slowly introducing the shakes a week earlier sounds like a way that may ease the transition. You pee out the fluid they pump you with in a couple of days. Doubt they would prescribe a diuretic unless the fluid was causing other health complications. But of course we’re all different & our surgeons have different post surgical plans. Those first 24hrs I would have been glad not to have to pee any more than I did. Plus they kept me on IV fluids for 24hrs so to get up & pee, I had to buzz a nurse to get them to disconnect the IV then steer the stand to the bathroom. Good luck.

That’s a good place to begin if it is what your surgeon & dietician recommended. What else you may need will depend upon you: what you’re lacking & your ability to absorb nutrients. A blood test will show what you are lacking in. It may be iron, calcium, vitamin D, one of vitamin Bs, etc. or nothing at all. I only took a multi vitamin (one in the am & one in the pm). Took a Vitamin D & magnesium briefly but dropped it when subsequent blood tests showed I had more than enough. About two months into maintenance I stopped the multivitamin too. I absorbed plenty of nutrients from the food I ate & didn’t need any supplements. Three monthly blood tests continued to endorse that until about 2 yrs after surgery (18 months in maintenance) I had my gall removed & now I don’t absorb protein as well. Not happy! Was prescribed Creons but still no other vitamins are needed. Another blood test in a couple of weeks to see if they’re helping.

Hi all, Just curious. How far out are you and how many calories are you eating a day? I'm almost 5 weeks and am around 900-1000 everyday and I'm concerned maybe too much? Curious where everyone is.

How many days in the hospital?
mrsjo replied to mrsjo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m hoping only 1-2 days. I’m afraid I can’t take 2 weeks because it is right at Christmas when other people want off too. I’m hopeful I can get surgery changed from a Monday to a Thursday or Friday so I can go back to work the next Monday. I’m hoping that will be enough time for me to do my desk job at home….. -
This is my goal. I was a strongman before and while I don't anticipate that's going to be part of my life any longer, I do love being strong. Can't wait till I can touch a barbell again. Two and a half more weeks... two and a half more weeks... argh!

May I make a suggestion? If you are having a week of liquid diet (not uncommon), start a week earlier and just start replacing meals with shakes. Then when you have to do the actual liquid, you've already "stepped down" and it's not this plunge over the abyss from food funerals to all shakes. It's truly not that bad, you just have to get used to it. The shakes are quite filling. The first week after surgery (I had VSG) was definitely tough, but it got better and better. I had some nausea but my surgeon prescribed ondansetron (what they give chemo patients to control the nausea) and also put a seasickness patch behind my ear in the surgery prep room that lasted 72 hours and was amazing. The biggest problem for me was the gas. They pump you full of surgical gas to inflate stuff so they can work laparoscopically and that gas doesn't magically get sucked out. It hurts sometimes, and in weird places. But it IS manageable. Walking helps A LOT, and so does Gas-X (simethicone). I was told I could have as much simethicone as I wanted. I did not have a lot of pain. I do not take opioid medication so I refused the "happy pills" they wanted to prescribe. I took four doses of extra-strength acetaminophen/paracetamol (Tylenol/Panadol) over two days and that was it. You might want to ask your surgeon about a water pill for the day after surgery to get rid of all the surgical fluid (saline) they put in you, so you can pee it out. She might say no, though, because some people have trouble getting all their fluids in and dehydration is a worry.

Food Before and After Photos
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I’m the same way. Out of the 20+ dozen cookies I made this week I had maybe 6 over 4 days. I just enjoy being able to make others happy with a treat or just making their day suck a little less (hospital healthcare is a nightmare right now) so to me researching a new recipe to share or learning a new technique for baking makes me feel better and seeing others enjoy helps reduce the anxiety and stress of working. And strangely some coworkers have asked me when I’m opening a bakery or if I’m taking cookie orders for the holidays….. 😂 Also, I woke up early Friday to make another 6 dozen cookies before work to celebrate a couple of coworkers birthdays- triple chocolate chip, strawberry shortcake, chocolate caramel, and chocolate butterfinger. -
How many days in the hospital?
catwoman7 replied to mrsjo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
it's usually 1-2 nights in the hospital, depending on how you're doing. I took three weeks off but could have gone back after two. I had a desk job (I'm now retired). But I could probably have gone back even earlier if I was working from home. The big problem after the first few days, like someone else said, is fatigue. -
Home from the hospital! One week post op!! Oct 1st :)

I just spent 2 weeks at Walt Disney World, go home tomorrow. I’m only 4 months out, so the restriction definitely kept things in check. But I did try various things while still focusing on protein. Some foods “sit” heavy, but I did not have any reactions overall to the different foods. I’m sure the scale will show an increase Monday, water weight due to eating carbs & the humidity. But, I’m hoping for a drop the following week because I did a tonne of walking that more than counteracted the food I ate. (I still tracked best I could - mainly to keep on top of protein intake)

How many days in the hospital?

Three nights due to nausea post bypass. One day at home before onset of vomiting due to out of control nausea. Six days in the hospital. If you’re prone to nausea don’t mess around! I’ve got three alternating prescriptions and am ok thus far (released from hospital yesterday). -
My word: buff, my mom’s word: smart, grandma’s word: dapper! Three generations cheering you on.

How many days in the hospital?
learn2cook replied to mrsjo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had RNY and was in and out of the hospital with one overnight. I took two weeks off of work. Going back was HARD, mostly because there is a lot of walking/standing. I think it depends on the procedure, your job, and any other medical complications you may face. From others I’ve talked with in my follow up group support, two weeks was average to go back to work.
