  1. I am not one that believes counseling solves everything but I think it would be helpful. It is a big decision and it does impact your life. I worry about thinks like your resistance to hydration (water)because post op that is a big issue. I was banded and then revised to sleeve. Band really impacted my life due to the vomiting and food restrictions. Sleeve I eat very normally (petite portions but I can eat all foods) however I avoided social restaurant events probably the first year post op. I am twice your age and had the patience for that. I was obese pretty much my whole life. In my mid 20s I weighed in the 200# range and I remember how awful I felt about my body and looks. Trust me, you judge yourself way harder than others do. U are more than your dress size or looks and counseling might help you see that.
  2. I had a 3 month post op appointment with my surgeons nutritionist yesterday and it was a bit disappointing to say the least. When I started my doctors program they had a nutritionist that was very knowledgeable but she has since left and been replaced by someone who seems very questionable in my opinion. He claims there are NO differences in how someone should eat with the sleeve versus a bypass and some of the things he says seem a little crazy. For example: Eating more than 4oz at a time will eventually cause my stomach to burst and will lead to needing a revision. (When I told him I can occasionally eat 5-6 ounces he freaked out.) You should try to never feel restriction. (Instead of eat only until you just begin to feel restriction) We should chew our food for 20 minutes. (He said this multiple times. Who the hell chews for 20 minutes, that's not even feasible.) We can never eat fruit with skin again, including grapes, apples, etc. (previous nut said if you can chew it to baby food consistency you can eat it.) We can never in our lives eat berries with small seeds such as strawberries, raspberries, etc. (Maybe he's right on this one but I hope not.) The 4 oz we eat MUST include 50% Protein (2oz) and the other 50% must be vegetables, fruit, and starch in that order. (Eating 4oz of protein is bad according to him because eating mainly protein will lead to kidney problems.) We should only take Flintstone chewables for a Multivitamin, anything else is a waste of money. All in all, I think this guy is close to what's right but still far enough away that he is creating confusion. Am I crazy or is he a bit wacky? I get the impression that he is only partially educated on this stuff and he's reading off a list that he is seriously misinterpreting. Is this in line with what the rest of you have been told/educated on? I'm looking for any input you want to share as I don't trust my new NUT at this point.
  3. I have the band (revising soon, I hope). I frequently throw up if I have an empty stomach. This isnt' the kind of trowing up I do if I'm stuck. Nothing is stuck, and actually, nothing comes up because I have a totally empty stomach. This has happened to be about 10 tines in the last 2 years. It can happen first thing in the morning, late at night, middle of the day. the common factor is that I'm usually very hungry and have gone a long time without eating or drinking. After I throw up nothing, I feel exhausted, but better. Then I drink Water and feel better. If I catch it soon enough I can eat and the nausea goes away. There is also a small window when it is too late to eat, but zofran will help me to not throw up.
  4. So just went in on Monday for the results of my band issue and submitted my revision to Gastric and just found out that it got approved. So next step is I go in on Monday and we set surgery date. Im so excited
  5. My insurance has the same clause but I had a different insurance when I had my band so I lucked out on that but my new insurance did not cover 100% for my revision like my old one did
  6. My only regret would be I wish I had had bypass first! I was a revision from band to bypass in May 2014. I am 2 pounds under my goal weight. Which was a normal bmi. Thrilled doesn't even begin to describe it. The only issue I have is with alcohol. I don't handle it very well. It's probably a good thing lol. I didn't exercise, the weight still came off.. I do eat sweets now and then. I feel fantastic and I look the best I probably ever have. It was a much easier surgery for me than the band was and I had my band removed at the same time I was revised to bypass. It's soooo much easier than the band.

    Upper GI Today

Well I have the lapband and I am working to revise to the sleeve. He stated that the risks associated with surgery are greater because of the scar tissue and other factors from my lapband surgery, than that of someone that has never had bariatric surgery at all.

I'm considering a revision sleeve to RNY for the same reason, severe reflux, with Dr Janey Pratt. I see her listed as your surgeon in your stats yet you say Dr Meireles did both? You don't seem happy with the revision, why? I don't have anymore weight to lose and am afraid I'll lose too much with the revision. Just trying to get as much info as I can to make an informed decision. Not many people with our situation to talk to out there. So are you having trouble with the RNY? Sorry for so many questions but would appreciate any info you think might be helpful.
  9. I had to call my insurance company (Keystone Health Plan East) for something and I figured that I would ask about revision surgery while I was on the phone with them. Turns out that the insurance company is telling me that my policy specifically states that bariatric surgery is a once in a lifetime thing, and that they would not cover revision surgery. Of course I couldn't have found that out BEFORE agonizing over the decision to have revision surgery for months. But apparently there might still be hope. My surgeons office is going to officially submit everything to the insurance company, and when it is denied we can then start the process of appealing their decision. Has anyone ever had any luck getting surgery approved on appeal, even if your insurance policy states it's only covered once?
  10. Im post op 5 1/2 years but due to complications need a revision. Would like to lose what ive gained and keep it off. Im in kansas but moving to pa in august. It can be via email text or calls if your not near. I did not have a support system before and would like one this go round. Thanks!
  11. Maybe I am just looking for a little sympathy, but I just found out that the surgeon's office lied to me when they rescheduled my surgery. I was originally scheduled for tomorrow Mar. 3 (my birthday is today, so it was like a birthday gift to myself). I even found someone on Bariatric Pal having surgery with the same Dr. on the same day March 3. My surgery was supposed to be at 8AM, hers at 10:30. I bought the expensive Protein powder that the doctor recommended, and really stuck to my two week diet. I got a call Thursday saying the doctor would be out of town, so they had to reschedule my surgery for Mar. 18th. Today, I got a message from my surgery friend asking if I am OK. She got a call today, moving her surgery up from 10:30 to my former spot at 8AM. She thought maybe I was sick or had some other reason to cancel the surgery. Obviously, the doctor is not out of town, because he is performing surgery tomorrow. I got bumped for some other reason. I feel sick, deceived, angry. I suppose it is normal to question whether having surgery is the right thing to do. I spent a day really questioning whether the delay was really a sign that I shouldn't go through with the surgery. Is my life really going to be that much better? I have serious back pain. My disks are gone in my lower back, and I have tons of arthritis. My sister, who has never been overweight (and is younger than me) has the same back problems. I just found out that her most recent treatments haven't been helping her back. It's taken me a long time to get up the courage to have surgery. My main motivation is that I can get surgery that would possibly fix some of my back issues. Sometimes, my insecurity sets in. Maybe I am not worthy to get the surgery. Did I get bumped for someone more important? If the doctor's office lied to me about this, should i trust them to open me up, and perform a major surgery/ (I am having an open revision of a surgery from 25 years ago).

    Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?

Yeah I've resorted to slider foods too. I feel like so much of a failure for it. How far out were u before the docs decided revision was best? How much have u lost? I'm on double dose omeprezole, ranitidine, carafate and nitroglycerin. Good luck with ur insurance!

    Sleeve Plication ?

Apparently this is the method that Dr. Oritz prefers for sleeve revision to tighten a loose sleeve. Yes I'm having a hard time finding much on it though I do know that the original plications (non sleevers) showed very little success long term.

    Sleeve Plication ?

I'm looking into a revision of my sleeve, resleeving is an option but Iv recently heard plication of the sleeve has also been successful, anyone have experience with this ?
  15. You posted this same message on another thread and a couple of us posted some follow-up questions. It's not completely clear which surgery you had, since you mention Gastric Bypass in your first sentence, but then you later mention having your lap-band removed and revised to sleeve? When you say you can eat 2-3 cups per meal, what kinds of food are you eating and how long is it actually taking you to consume that much?
  16. I'm not clear on which surgery you had. Sounds like band revised to sleeve? But you mention bypass as well.... Anyway, when you say 2-3 cups of food at a meal, what kind of food and how long does it take for you to eat it?

    Easter's Challenge

Current weight: 119. Please revise my goal to 117. I chose 118 because I thought my body was basically finished releasing fat. Apparently not.

    Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?

Zunbapink..... I feel for ya, I have a tough time exercising too. I have an immune deficiency and get sick alot. Between that and being in pain every time I eat, exercising is the last thing on my mind. I struggle with eating and have resorted to the bad habit of grazing just to get ANY food in. My surgeon got upset with me when I told him that tho. But seriously, does HE exercise when he has the flu? I hope your revision goes well. Please keep in touch, I havnt had one but I think it's heading it that direction
  21. Begin Again

    Regret

I'm sorry you are struggling, you are not alone. I'm 5 1/2 weeks post op and didn't experience much pain. But I'm a lap band to bypass revision patient and I did have pain with the removal of the lap band, it stinks, but it is temporary. Pain contributes to feelings of depression. I was extremely exhausted and had some serious brain fog that I contribute to the effects of anesthesia. In fact, I still don't feel 100 % in those areas, but I keep reminding myself that too will pass. I can really relate to the regret, my doctor says no spicy food for six months and I keep wanting some sriracha or jalapenos. He also said no rice for 5 years and I don't even like rice, but I mourn that too. I think all of these feelings are normal, part of the mental battle that the surgery forces us to face.
  22. In the end WLS is only a tool that will help you on your weight loss journey. I have had a band,a revision, a band removal and now the sleeve. If I don't exercise I don't lose as much. If I choose to snack somehow it goes down so I have to make good choices. If I don't feel like drinking as much water I don't have to but the days I get in at least 64 oz I feel better. Choosing to have these kind of surgeries is a very personal decision because only you will have control of how it works for you. In my opinion the sleeve is definitely a much better surgery then the band. I told my surgeon he should stop using it because of all the complications and follow ups. Good luck!!
  23. The removal of the band is definitely the harder part of the surgery. Where they remove the port and the scar tissue around it is where you will feel some pain afterword. I have had the band, a band revision, band removal and sleeve and the removal was the most difficult. But just rest and know it will get better. Good luck!

Time has come - Band coming out

I have bcbs and they covered the removal and then revision to sleeve three months later. There were separate approvals but the doctors usually know how to get them. If they can show that the band worked for you initially and once it stopped working you gained some weight I have heard that they will most times approve it. Good luck!
  25. I had my band removed in July '14 and the sleeve done in Nov '14. Couldn't be happier. All the stuck feelings I used to get with the band, the choking and the slime are gone. I definitely had success with the band initially but it slipped upward once and I had it revised. One year later slipped again. By the second time the doctor said this tool was just not cooperating with my body. He did say that my stomach needed to heal after having the band removed before doing the sleeve so I would check with your doctor about that. I have lost about 50 pounds so far and feel great.
