    May Surgeries - check in!

Oh my gosh, don't weigh every day. Your body weight fluctuates throughout the day for many reasons. Try to do your weigh ins once a week at the same time of day and under the same conditions. It is a more accurate representation of how your body is adjusting to the new normal. This is a journey. Do what you should to have a healthy body, just as you are doing, and trust the process.

    June 2021- calling all Vets!

Hello! Still trucking! I had sleeve in November 2014...original total loss was 185 lbs. I am currently 15 lbs over my lowest weight, but slowly working my way back down. Hard to believe it has been almost 7 years! Sent from my SM-G998U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Questions

Find out what your insurance requires. Some insurances don't require monitored weight loss, but most do. From 3 months-1 year. Some insurances that don't require the monthly weight loss instead have a percentage you have to lose to be approved (though some of the monitored weight loss insurances have this too). My insurance was different then yours and it required a 6 month monitored weight loss program, but did not have a requirement to lose weight (you just couldn't GAIN weight). You can actually generally ask the insurance coordinator at the bariatric office what your insurance requires if you don't want to call your insurance yourself. After they send the paperwork in to the insurance it takes 2-3 weeks to approve and then they'll give you a surgery date. So really it depends on 1. your insurance, and 2. how long they're scheduled out for (because I got approved at the end of November 2019, but my surgery was scheduled 2 months later on January 23 2020. So my wait from my first bariatric consultation until surgery was 8 months). The time actually goes by pretty fast. Or, at least it did for me. I ended up losing 68 pounds in that 8 month period so... I was productive lol.

5 year post gastric bypass weight gain

I think many of us have had some regain in one form or another. For ALL of us, once the surgery stops working it's completely up to us. Post op 7 years next week, when I was losing I thought I was invincible and had no fear of regain. But I lost a parent, changed jobs, changed jobs again, went to night shift, went to grad school, dealt with all kinds of things, and the 'eat all things in small amounts' went out the window. I had to fully commit to a very specific PERMANENT very low carb lifestyle. I lost all my regain and more, but I have eaten only a ketogenic level lifestyle for the last 6 years. I am not one of those patients who loses their weight and can resume eating all things just in tiny amounts. I have to work at staying very low carb, no sugar, almost no fruit, no starchy veg, no bread/rice/pasta/oats/grains etc. I basically eat meat, green veg, eggs, cream/butter, and a high protein shake with water or almond milk daily. it's a tight regimen but it works for me. Remember your WHY. find it and recommit. you totally got this!

    Surgery tomorrow

if you follow the rules, you won't gain all the weight back. That happens when people let their old habits back in.

    Is it possible....

I agree it s a lot of weight to drop in 3 weeks. Though your scales may not have been accurate for a while as the batteries were failing. Maybe time for some new scales???

    Surgery tomorrow

10 years is a long time to try to lose weight, give it your best, and be unsuccessful. I remember my surgeon saying in the orientation that weight loss surgery is the best chance many people have for success, long-term. You will be getting an amazing tool that will complement what you are already doing. I can’t speak to gaining the weight back, since I am only a few months out. But so far, the weight has been coming off easier than ever in my life. I feel where you are coming from, about feeling that not losing weight so far has been a personal failure. For years, I have felt that I am smart, accomplished, and yet I can’t figure out how to lose weight! At some point, some of us need some extra help, and this is it! I hope your surgery goes well! 😀

    Surgery tomorrow

Basically the same. It is frustrating because most of my life my weight was under control. The past 10 years is when things changed. Overall I eat well but my weight still climbs so I finally tried medical weight loss. Did not lose any weight which is why my doctor suggested surgery. I still feel that it is a failing on my part and that I should be able to get this under control. also afraid I will go through this and not lose weight or gain it all back like I have read about others
  9. I also find it hard to stay on track. I see this as a lifelong battle and my motivation is that I NEVER want to go back to the overweight and unhealthy person I was. My absolute "set in stone" rules are that I weigh myself every day (for me this is absolutely crucial to maintaining my weight); I count my protein carefully to make sure I get enough, and always take my vitamins (I really want to minimise other medical issues and hair loss). Other than that I have good food days and not so good food days but I just can't be "perfect" with what I eat everyday and I've accepted that.

    Band to sleeve

Had my revision on 3/15/21 and I feel amazing. I had been fairly successful keeping the weight off with the LB (however, I still wanted to lose more weight but wasn’t anywhere near to being as heavy as I had been pre-LB). I also had a horrible hiatal hernia and GERD that was pretty severe. HH was repaired during surgery and have not experienced one episode of reflux since. I am down 30 pounds since surgery. Weight loss has been steady but slower this go-around (very common after revisions, just FYI), but I am 10000000% happy I did the revision!

    6 weeks out - Expectations

So for me, my BMI was a bit lower than what most doctors would consider for the VSG surgery. I really didn't want to go that route anyway. So, I was excited to learn about the ESG. It took me a LONG time to get my expectations in line. My friend had the gastric bi-pass and loss massive weight very quickly and I guess I had that in my head. But, she started out 100 pounds heavier than I did. While logically I knew I wouldn't drop weight that fast, somehow I kept being disappointed by slow and steady progress. Even if I'd qualified for the VSG, I'd go the ESG route again. I'm still 20 pounds from my goal weight, but I'm fine with that. I've gone from a very tight size 16 to a comfortable 10. The most important thing is I'm comfortable in my skin for the first time since my early 20's. My advice is don't wait. You can debate for another year and it will be putting your life on hold that much longer. You likely know in the back of your mind which route is the way you want to go. Pull the trigger and get things moving. Set realistic expectations. Do not expect this to be an easy fix. Instead of thinking of it as making weight loss easy, think of it as making weight loss completely possible and within reach. It will be hard and you will have set backs, even early on. This group helped me so much knowing it was just that, a small set back. This is by far the best thing I've ever done for myself. Either route you choose will change your life for the better. Good luck!

I violate thermodynamics and it's crap

I've stopped losing inches now. Everything has just come to a total halt for the past 3 weeks or so. I did go on vacation week-before-last, so that particular week is a wash. I didn't eat everything in sight, but I did decide I could have dessert and drink wine with the husband. That said, me eating a lot now would probably hit 2000 calories -- it's so hard to overeat. I get full for an entire day on what would have been one standard meal out of 2 or 3 before. I have to break this stall naturally eventually, right? Physics says so? My bathroom scale is irritatingly unreliable. I can stand shifted to my right foot and gain 5-10 pounds, to the left and lose 5-10. It's obnoxious. I think I'm around 230-235 right now. It makes sense with how I'm fitting into my clothes and how the scale has wobbled around. Dishearteningly, that's where I was before I gained the pandemic weight. So really, I look no thinner than I did before Covid. Ugh. That said, I did lose 20-30 pounds in 2 months, which is astounding compared to past progress. That's about 3 lbs a week, which IIRC is considered really dang good. Maybe time is just going slower since the ESG than I think. I know I'm slipping on drinking water. I don't like having to pee frequently. That said, I'm sweating more, which is a good thing considering I'm just about anhydrotic most of the time. Maybe I've just been dehydrated my entire life. I picked up weightlifting again. I started out pretty weak, and I've had to skip some days because of the extreme heat (no AC in the gym aaaah) and work stress. That said, I'm up to 185 lb squats and 95 lbs bench-press now. That's something.

    May Surgeries - check in!

My doctor's PA made me promise not to weigh until the 5week post op visit. She said otherwise I would break my own heart because weight fluctuates after surgery.

    May Surgeries - check in!

Hi Everyone 👋, I had my surgery on the 24th, I have lost 16lbs in total so far and 1.3lbs last week. However, I am up 1.5lbs since yesterday 😔. I am getting 50-55oz of water and do 2 protein shakes a day each one of them is 30gms of protein, regular bowl movement. I am suppose to start soft foods today but, I fear I won't lose any weight if start eating anything at all. What am I doing wrong? The weigh in has me in tears this morning 😔. Any suggestions on what I can do to help lose weight 😢

    Loose skin

Lifting weights. Collagen. And skin care. Doesn’t mean you won’t have lose skin. Helps reduce the amount of lose skin. This is coming from someone who started very heavy (320).

    Is it possible....

Not likely. Do you have a gym or clinic where you can get an accurate weight?
  17. So my scale has been out of whack for a month maybe. I just replaced the batteries. My last reliable weight would have been 295 about 3 weeks ago. Today it was 262. Is it possible to drop that much weight so quickly? I'm about 7 weeks post op vgs. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using BariatricPal mobile app

    Weight loss

The good news is we don't need to exercise to lose weight we just need to be in calorie deficit, but if you did want to some exercise, is water aerobics an option for you or perhaps a recumbent bike?

    Weight loss

Hard to exercise with arthritis in both my knees..but im going to keep going want to get to 300 pounds Sent from my LM-X220PM using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. No restriction going from VSG to RNY really bothered me for a long time and was the worst. Best thing for me was that I am a dumper since I have no restriction and this keeps me in check and its much easier to maintain weight loss.

1 year out DS and going crazy

You’ve lost 215lbs? That’s amazing. Congratulations. Though I’m sorry you had problems after your DS surgery. I agree with @Creekimp13’s suggestion to see a therapist. They’ll support you work through any emotional issues you may have & provide strategies to help you do the head work needed to be successful in this process. I wasn’t an avid calorie counter but did random checks. It’s easy to overestimate portion size, calorie content & the nutritional content of what you’re eating. It is a pain but very worthwhile. I’d also suggest contacting your nutritionalist (or finding one who specialises in bariatric patients) to review your diet & make suggestions. Of course, if you are doing all the right things, it could be a stall. Most last 1-3 weeks but that’s the average, some do last longer. They are the worst but sometimes your body just needs time to catch up with all the changes, like your weight loss, reduced calories, dietary changes, increased activity, etc. You’ve got a great cheer squad in your husband (ignore your family) & your children are a great motivation. There’s always support & advice here too. All the best.

    8 months NO WEIGHT LOSS

My wife is in the same situation. One year out, 20lbs down. She eats like a bird. Healthy and incredibly low calorie count. She did prior to surgery too. I personally don’t think she needed it, but she felt like she did. She’s pretty muscular so I think a lot of her weight just isn’t meant to come off. She has had multiple tests and specialists and other than severe anemia (a dozen Iron infusions so far and it’s barely crawling up) nothing seems to be wrong. It sucks, I know. The worst part is when doctors and people assume she isn’t following the plan, isn’t exercising enough etc…. (How many of you reading this are making the same assumption?) We should have known because her calorie count was sub 1000 prior to surgery, did a daily personal trainer thing for several months etc and never lost. Smaller stomach hasn’t changed much for her to be honest. One doctor told her if there was a famine she would be one of the survivors. :/ I guess the two of you could hang out if that happens. Edit: I forgot to add that she has tried several medications that supposedly help with weight loss.  Since a lot of these work by suppressing appetite they clearly won’t work in her case, but that seems to be all they can figure out to try.

    Post op diet

That makes sense! I can do 4-6 oz of food at a time and I try to add as much nutrients to it as possible I just want to find the line between weight loss and giving my body enough to heal.
  24. SummerTimeGirl

    Post op diet

My binder does NOT give calories guidelines for the FULL LIQUID, PUREE, or SOFT FOODS stages. Just amounts of things I should be eating, i.e. 4 oz. It says once I get to my regular food stage to stay around 1000 or under for continued weight loss. Then I guess once I hit my goal that will increase slightly but not sure yet as I'm only 3.5 weeks out.

    June Surgeries

I've got Cigna Health Insurance and they have exclusions specifically for weight loss related stuff (even prescriptions). Doesn't make sense to me, but it is what it is. It does mean I paid out of pocket though. The surgery itself was around $19.5k. That said, insurance also does not cover any of the pre-op or post-op care appointments either. I think we're already up around 23k total paid if you include surgery and appointments. Then it's usually a good $500-$600 per appointment at the hospital if it involves seeing the surgeon. Little less if it's a registered nurse. And less again if it's the dietician. So the number will steadily increase over time with follow up visits.
