Way to go Indian, I think the NSV are what keep us going. I have noticed even though we're not suppose to I can drink with my meals. I can tell I have restriction but my surgeon says since I can drink with my meals I'm still not tight enough. Keep up the great work,

    July 2006 Band Crew

Hi All, Sorry I haven't been around for a while but I've been so busy, I had organised my parents 40th wedding anniversary surprise party for last saturday and it was at my house, so very stressfull!! but a fantastic party and I now have 2 very ahppy parents.. As for the weight! well, I haven't been weighed for a little while, should be going to the gym tomorrow so will get weighed then and report in.. The Good news is I've had SEVERAL NSVs!!! 1) Went to get haircut and there was lots more room in the chair than normal! my thighs weren't bulging out the side as they usually do.. 2) Went to theatre and same thing there, I could fit easily in seat and had plenty legroom, which means my bottoms smaller!! 3) Went on my first clothes shopping trip and had difficulty finding clothes to fit!! nothing unusual there I can hear you all say...but this was good news as i'm down 2 sizes almost 3 and that was the problem...but a good one!! 4) I got all dressed up for the party and I actually felt good about myself..even slightly pretty!! and i never feel like that..and I was happy looking in a mirror checking out my reflection..lol I think that's all of them for the moment, but you know all of a sudden I feel worthwhile! I know you all will understand that but I would find it hard to explain to my non lapband friends... Well done everyone, keep up the good work and lets beat this thing together!! Beth - sorry I think it was you who keeps having the pain in the chest(if not then I apologise) I also have this pain, it usually happens when I eat too fast, or the wrong kind of food and I find I have to stop eating because it's telling me I've had enough and haven't realised I'm full and I count that as a finished meal and don't go back to it, if I was to continue eating I would PB, so maybe you should try this and see if it helps stop it. recurring

Jamie, that's such a great NSV! I'm so proud of all of us ABC'ers! We're doing great! All of you who've been losing so well are an inspiration. I got my fill last Tuesday and lost 3 pounds! Yay! :banana I'm so hoping that the loss keeps going. I've got more restriction than I did before the fill, but don't think I've hit my "sweet spot" yet. I'll just keep plugging away though. I got cleared at my fill to start abdominal exercises this week, so it's back to the Bowflex for me today! Maybe now I'll start losing some more inches.
  5. Has anyone else noticed their shoes getting too big? I wouldn't have dreamed that would happen, but I guess it make sense since pregnancy can cause the need to buy bigger shoes. Also, I thought of a NSV I'm looking forward to. It will be nice when I can hang my pants on ANY hanger and not have to bypass the ones with the little supports built in. What a journey! I'm much happier taking the time to soak in the sites on my journey rather than focusing only on my destination.

    New From Ohio

Welcome Buckeye, I'm from Ohio, too. Don't let us scare you off too much. That's what forums are all about. People post their questions and problems, others answer. Those people who don't have problems don't often post and say "Hey, I'm doin' great". Sometimes you'll see something called a NSV (non-scale victory) which is a little celebration of something good that happened not directly related to the scales going down. Keep reading, you'll see that we're a great community and resource for information.

Fills seem to have a mind of their own. Continue to be very careful. I'm taking Barbara's advice and getting .3 for my next fill. I don't care how quickly the liquids go through. I agree about the scar tissue thing. I used to be able to feel the flat part of my port. Now what I feel first is the round edge. I can still feel the flat part angling inward--but it feels "bumpy" which must be scar tissue. Wonder if it's something to do with being over 50? I'm hoping the buildup will stop soon. I don't like to think about losing the band. I do hope to have it unfilled completely after I've lost the weight and feel confident of my eating habits. The floor installers are still here and I'm weary of them. Kept promising an early afternoon--and I need to prepare for this afternoon's students. The dogs are even getting on my nerves. Thankfully, I love the new floor. NSV--The new blouse I bought 6 weeks ago that wouldn't button (I wear sleeveless t's under open shirts) can now be buttoned. I also don't worry about shrinking anything any more. I never dried any knit top or pants, but that's not an issue any longer.

Starting Over, I am a firm believer of using the scale that makes you feel good. I weighed myself on my own scale before surgery and continue to weigh myself on my own scale and frankly I use those numbers, so my goal weight will probably be 5 pounds or more heavier at the Dr.'s office then on my own scale. However, I know I will feel and look good at the number I chose for my home scale. IMO, If the old number makes you feel better the pack up the new scale and use the old one, for now. Also, it makes sense that if you were working out you only lost two pounds. I bet if you had taken measurements you would see that you lost inches not pounds those two weeks. My scale hasn't moved in about a month however my clothes are still getting more loose. So, start thinking of your NSV's when you get down about the number. Starting over, I bet you will see you have had quite a few!

What's so bad about being fat anyway?

The way I look was a major factor in my choice to have this surgery. I live in the core of a large Canadian city. Like New York, we have good urban transit and we walk a lot. People who live downtown tend to be well-groomed and slim. I started gaining weight after I went through an early menopause just like my mother, and just like my mother all my weight gain was on my torso. At first I was fairly relaxed about this but when I was switched, for reasons of treating my problems with depression (also hereditary), to a fattening cocktail of pharmaceuticals, this weight gain stopped being a joke. I joined a gym but exercise alone wasn't doing much and by now I weighed too much for liposuction and a tummy tuck. The truth was that I had become fat, was going to get fatter, and I felt that my body was totally out of control. It had become my enemy and I was embarassed by myself. A friend told me about this procedure. I made an appointment in order to find out whether I would be a suitable candidate and now here I am, another bandster! I was banded September 7 of this year. I haven't been weighing myself because I got out of the habit of using a scale when I was 25 and I can't seem to break the groove. I have been having some NSVs however and I am learning how to break some of my more self-destructive habits. But it was my vanity that started this journey.

GEMom, Grats on the NSV that is awesome!!!!!! It doesn't matter how many pounds or how slow you take them off if you are 2 sizes down....that is what counts! not to mention how you feel and the compliments from your husband! whoooo hooooo.....awesome! Spunky, My thoughts go out to you with your new life and family challange. I am a 2x cancer survivor myself, so I know how stressful this life challange can be. My husband and mother are the reason I am here today, not my treatments from MD Anderson or my Oncologists'. Since my recovery, food "had" been my comfort as I realized how fortunate I was to be alive. Now, I have many comforts, LBT and ABC being two of them. Please come here and vent or send me personal PMs if you need to bend an understanding ear. We are here for you!!

Great NSV. I have the same problem and I'm short to boot. I found a pair of jeans that fit really well for me at JCPenney's.

Hey Spunky! First I want to stop and say Yay! on the 25lbs. Celebrate every single one that goes. I'm a slow loser too and and getting my first fill on Oct 19. Maybe things will pick up. Good question about how long it took you to feel your first feel and one you should take up with doc's office. Let them know your concerns about getting the second fill and ask if it is needed at this time. From what I hear, the only time you need fills is if there is no restriction and you can eat more and more. Smaller clothes qualify as an NSV -- Non scale Victory. These are what keep us from going crazy watching the scale. Another thing to celebrate!! :cheer2: Two more things young lady -- When did 58 get old? Haven't you heard that old is anyone 15 years older than you are? About that ticker -- you can do it. There are very clear instructions on the ticker in the forum on FAQs and Resources (?) [can't remember the exact name, but FAQ is what to look for] . Follow them step by step and just remember you have to paste in a new one every time the weight changes. Good luck! Jo Ann

What's so bad about being fat anyway?

Well you're certainly entitled to an opinion, but I disagree with it. I think mental health is every bit as important as physical and the discrimination and stigma that come from being morbidly obese are valid reasons for surgery, they are every bit as serious a comorbidity as high blood pressure. Its such an ignorant way to view the whole thing, to completely disregard mental health and the effects of obesity on mental health. Hmm, standard cosmetic surgery only affects your looks? Surely having bags of silicone put into your chest, necessitating several repeat surgeries as they degrade and making future mammograms to detect things like breast lumps very very difficult all for the sake of having bigger breasts is every bit as risky as bariatric surgery. Especially the lap band. Managed properly and with a bit of luck that you wont be one of the small percentage that experiences probl4ms, a lap band does NOT compromise your nutrition and health, and I'd hazard a guess its much less risky than carrying round a few silicone implants. We all know the health horrors that have occurred due to breast implants. I dont particularly care to stick toxins in my face either or slice bits of my face all for the sake of looking younger. I'd rather look healthy and fit (as a result fof my lap band surgery and the immeasurably healthier lifestyle that has followed it) but look my age than be overweight and lacking in energy and get up and go but having a nipped and tucked face. And I dont think there's many women around who can say totally honestly that vanity played no part whatsoever in their decision. Come on! So many of our NSV's are about superficial things like going down in sizes and such.

Great NSV!!!!! I'm opposite also. I'm in 12's in regular size pants, but in tops, I'm a 16-18, or sometimes 14-16. I'm kinda big busted, but just carry weight funny. :girl_hug: Keep up the great work!

    My Biggest NSV To-Date

I haven't had the pleasure of doing any clothes shopping yet, but I wanted to congratulate you on your great NSV! I can't wait to shop in a department other than plus sizes, how exciting. Oh, and by the way, long time no talk to! I just saw Dr. Herrera today for my monthly appointment. I was on the line about whether or not I needed a fill, so we talked and decided not just yet. I am averaging between 1.5 and 2 pounds a week, so we are going to give it a few more weeks. I have a feeling by next month I will definitely need one. I hope to see you at the next meeting, I have missed the last two, one due to my daughter being ill and the other due to work.
  20. I have been a little discouraged lately. I officially weigh every Monday morning, and have been doing the up and down thing for a couple of months, though at the end of the month the average for the month is still coming out to about a pound per week. (I know that's what its supposed to be, but being patient is not one of my strongest attributes..lol) BUT, yesterday I wanted something new to wear, everything was either getting too big or I was just tired of it. So I go shopping. I tried on pants first, not good, if they fit around my stomach the legs are HUGE...I tried on 3 pairs of jeans....yuk. Then I went for the tops..... I tried on several...all too big...hmmmmm...maybe a different department? For the first time in YEARS...I went to the ladies department...not womens...ladies...I bought a size 16/18 top....I cried in the dressing room... I've gone from a 26W/28W to a 16/18 top... Now if I could find pants to fit I would be ecstatic... Does anyone else have the problem with pants? The stomach is big and hanging and the legs are SKINNY...and there is NO junk in the trunk...what do I wear?

Julie congrats on your NSV, your a little fire ball and a great inspiration. I had a personal trainer many years ago and it does make a difference. Kat, I am glad you weren't hurt in that hail storm, are the kids alright? 41 inches?????? outstanding job on your weight loss to date!! Betty isn't it grand to be able to clean out our closets? NSV for the guys out there

I realize we're in the minority here, so I wanted to share a male NSV with my "Band of Brothers" out there. Pre-band, I wore size 48 Jockey briefs. My local department store carries the Jockey "Big-Man" sizes (48 and above), but there's a catch. Big-Man briefs come in a package of 2 for $16.50. So when I'd need six sets of briefs, it was $50 or $8.25 a pair, rather steep, by what's the alternative? It's expensive to be overweight. Well, my supply of 48's is now much too large for me after dropping 40 pounds pre- and post-surgery, so I went back to see about smaller sizes. Now shopping in the regular Jockey section, a package of 3 briefs, size 44, is $17. Great deal so far, right; now it's "buy two, get one free". So 6 pairs is only going to cost me $34. But wait, as I'm about to checkout, I see a clearance table and guess what? Jockey briefs, package of 3, size 44, $8.50 (now we're under $3 a pair). So I grab two packages of 44 and, when do you ever find Jockey on sale, I grab 2 packages of size 42, planning for the future. I go to the checkout counter and the clerk begins to ring up the clearance packages and the register displays $4.99 a package. Hold on, now the cost per pair just dropped to $1.65. Back to the clearance table for sizes 40 and, just for good measure, 38. Grand total for 24 pairs of briefs was $42 tax included. I just bought 24 pairs of Jockey brand men's briefs for less than 6 pairs of "Fat-Boy" (oops, Big-Man) briefs. Damn that felt terrific. I was just tickled pink. And my DH was with me on the underwear excursion so she got to share my joy firsthand. I don't mean to toot my own horn; in fact, I have so, so much to be thankful for. I just wanted to share this experience, because I know how downright demeaning it was for me to have to shop at the Fat-Boys stores. Maybe someone on the verge of deciding whether or not to get banded will benefit from this rambling. Just as an aside, anyone looking for large-size name-brands mens wear, e.g. Dockers, Jockey, at reasonable prices may want to check out Gustwillers.com; it's a clothing store in Ohio that carries large sizes in name brands at below MSRP prices.

Goodness, Kat, you are lucky you didn't get hurt in the storm, hail is brutal. Was there no warning the storm was coming, those poor kids. What a way to ruin their parade. You know, I love bowling and haven't done it in years. Now you got me thinking about it. That sounds like a great night out of fun for the family. Our local alley is always advertising a midnight bowling thing with all kinds of special events that occur during it, maybe we will have to take the kids and do that next weekend, thanks for the idea! Julie, I like your NSV, that is cool. I so admire you girl. I have been totally lacking in motivation to exercise this month and your working out with a personal trainer! I need to get off my lazy butt before it starts growing again instead of shrinking. On a good note, I thought I had ate a lot this week and actually lost 2 pounds. I have noticed on the weeks I think I ate too much, I seem to lose more. I guess maybe I am going to have to break down and keep track of my calories on fitday to see exactly how much I should be eating to insure good weight loss. Apparently, there is truth to the idea that if you don't eat enough, it can hinder your weight loss instead of help it. 10/4: 35 minutes on the treadmill 10/6: 35 minutes on the treadmill 10/7: 50 minute walk around the neighborhood<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Hail? WOW. I think I've only seen hail once or twice in my life. I remember thinking it was the freakiest thing ever, mostly because it was summer yet there was falling ice. I'm glad you're safe and not too damaged from the storm. I forgot to tell you all my wacky NSV from last night with the trainer. She made me do these crazy pushups. Anyway, between sets, I was able to sit back on my heels (imagine going froma kneeling position to sitting back so your read is touching your heels). This is a completely natural position for many people, but I hadn't been able to do it in years because my calves and thighs were too big for my rear and ankles to actually meet. YEA!
