  1. I have been having nausea and, vomiting since 2 weeks post op. I had a stricture that kept coming back and had to be dilated 3 times and I'm only 3months post op. I have been in and out of the hospital several, times as well. I was in the hospital 2 weeks ago for over 2 weeks. I was unable to take anything by mouth. They put a picc line in and started me on TPN (IV nutrients). Thy had to pull my picc line a week later cause it went bad. I was eating a clear/full liquid diet. Now I'm vomiting again and this time I'm having sever abdominal pain as well. I'm unable to keep much down and it all hurts even water. My surgeon has me on several medications but they aren't helping. He suggested I might have to have a revision done. Has anyone had a b anything like this? Or had a revision? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I'm extremely weak physically and emotionally drained from all this.
  2. Okay almost 7 years ago I started having a debilitating pain in my left knee and down the outside of my left leg. It would go down my leg and into my foot. The pain on a scale of 1-10 was a 20! Nothing helped it or made it ease up. I saw an orthopedic doc who said I had patello femoral knee pain in my knee and I needed physical therapy. So I did PT on and off for years. Finally in 2005 the pain became unbearable and I had surgery on my knee. The doc never said that my knee was making my leg hurt but since I kept complaining with my leg and he kept talking about my knee I just Assumed they were connected. Well I had the surgery and my knee was doing great but my leg was still KILLING me. That's when he told me that they were NOT related at ALL and that he felt I had a pinched nerve in my back that was making my leg hurt so badly. Since then I've seen 2 neurologists, 1 neurosurgeon, a Rheumatologist, 2 more orthopedic docs besides the one I have, my family doc and a Physical Medicine doc. I've had an MRI of my leg, knee and low back. I've also had an EMG which was good. The physical med doc said he felt that the MRI wasn't telling the whole story and I that have a pinched nerve and it's just not showing up on the MRI. He wanted to do an epidural steroid injection. I got pregnant after that and couldn't do it. Now here I am. My baby is 6 months old. EVERY SINGLE TIME I walk a lot I go to bed with a horrible pain in my leg:( Rather it's walking on my treadmill or just walking a lot b/c I'm out shopping. The only thing that helps is to take Vicodin OR a sleeping pill so I can at least sleep through the night but I can't take either with a baby in the house. I'm 30 years old and I'm tired of having this pain. It holds me back so much! Should I just go ahead and schedule the Steroid Injection or what? I've spent a lot of time and money on this not to have definite answers. I see my Lap Band surgeon again in 2 weeks and I'm going to go over all of this with him and see what he says also. It actually depresses me:(

    Surgery on April 5th!

My experiences are below however I did not have a revision. Could be lots differrent. 1. I know everybody is different, but how long did you stay in the hospital? I'm having surgery early Monday morning and I'm hoping I will be able to go home Monday night (my doctor says it's a possibility). I went home the same day when I had the band put in. I was in the surgery clinic overnight and in the recovery house for 2 days. Kinda different when you travel instead of staying home for surgery. To me, it was an easier surgery than my tummy tuck and was home by noon the same day. 2. How long were you on liquids after surgery? I think I'm on clears for a week. I didn't like clears. LOL I followed the sleeve diet guidelines from Cornell University. Worked good for me. 3. The week of my surgery is my spring break (I'm a middle school teacher). I will have that week to recover plus I'm taking another week off (2 weeks total). I'm constantly on my feet and moving when I'm at work...although I don't do any physical labor. Do you think 2 weeks is enough recovery time? I had surgery on Thursday, flew home on Sunday, worked 4-6 hours per day, every day the next week. I am mostly at a desk but am up and around a decent amount. I think teaching is harder, especially depending on the age group : ) 4. I've read that some people have clear Protein on after surgery when they're on the clear diet...I've bought the clear powder before (flavorless). Do you just add it to Crystal Light or something? 5. Is there anything you wish you would have brought to the hospital that you didn't? I remember after my band I was happy I brought Chap Stick...just wondering if there is any other little comforts I should think of. I was very happy to have my heating pad and gasx! My body temperature was hot and cold constantly, so the heating pad came in handy. The gasx was nice for the gas and also a 'treat' before you could have ice chips or anything else. I didn't read very much or use my laptop. I did send a few emails from my cell phone tho. Good luck with your surgery! It is coming up quickly!!
  4. I am 10 days out from surgery. After my week check up I was able to begin the mechanical diet. I have started having pain while I'm eating. After a few bites I get sharp pains in my upper belly and some pain in my left shoulder blade. This didn't start until I started this stage of the diet. Has anyone experienced these pains? Is it normal or should I call the dr?
  5. I'm 4 days post op and got in 3 protein shakes for a total of 84g protein and drank about 50oz water. Seems like too much according to what others have posted. Should I be concerned?

    Too much protein and water?

That's great! I struggled to get in my 60g of protein the first few weeks, and still struggle with my liquids almost 8 weeks out...

    Menstrual Cycle

Im over a year out and still deal with 2 week long periods. Ive just switched to seasonale so I only get bleeds 4 times a year. If you end up in the same boat, get the bleeding under control ASAP, because then you might be dealing with anemia as well. Anemia is no fun. I have zero energy. Im currently on massive iron dosages. I had/still have PCOS, and I dont know if that has played a role in the abnormally long periods, but it probably hasnt helped. I noticed too, after a couple months out from surgery, PMS pain is more intense too. I was told this is due to all the estrogen being release through fat loss. It's definitely a journey. Most people seem to get their hormones under control after your weight loss plateaus. I was told that was going to happen for me too; it unfortunately didn't. So, all I can say is, if you end up having long bleeds, get that under control fast and talk to your team about upping your iron.
  8. Hi, So...I'm getting banded in about 2 weeks and I've started my pre-op diet - started it a bit early - been on it about 5 days. So far so good - shakes are tolerable and lean lunches aren't that bad either. My problem is with the fact that in order to do the pre-op right the choices and tastes are rather limited. Yes, I have a list of all the wonderful "shakes" you can make - but I'm not really a shake/smoothie kinda person. I enjoy food, not for emotional or stress reasons, but for the quality and taste (I know - a form of addiction). So my question to those who've been banded for a while is: Will I be able to eat high-end, quality restaurant foods or will a trip to a restaurant be a total waste of time not to mention money? I don't mind eating in small quantities, but I would still like to enjoy the foie gras, good stinky cheeses (bread I can live without), a nice steak (a small one) or really unique and different foods that I have access to while traveling on the expense account I don't care about burgers, fast food, cakes and all other junk - that I can totally give up and never care a bit, but when I'm faced with a chocolate soufflé with grand marnier - it's kinda hard to say no - again I'll only have a bite - it's the taste experience that's enticing. I'm also a sucker for street food - especially in NY. Have any of you thought about this before the surgery? How has your restaurant experience been affected by the band? Did you have to give up all the delicious things and replace them with shakes or meh chicken just to deal with the band? Have any of the awesome gourmet foods been a problem because of the band? Any insight would be great. Thanks in advance!! Ahab

    2 Week Optifast Diet?

I was on 2 weeks Optifast....I had no problems and was never hungry!! they taste nice as well!
  11. Give yourself a break! You just had a significant surgery and it will take a week or so before you are back to yourself. I took a week off work and found myself taking daily naps! The days I pushed myself too far, I paid for it the next couple of days. Everyone heals differently and each surgery is different. Relax and recuperate, get caught up on some good books or movies.
  12. I had been doing great, at 2 weeks I was down 26 lbs (including pre surgery diet weight loss) now 3 weeks out not only have I not lost anything I gained 2...WTH!!!
  13. I had a similar plan pre-op. For 2 weeks prior to surgery, I had a Protein shake for Breakfast, another for lunch, and for dinner I was allowed a lean protein and brightly colored vegetables...the good news was that there was no size limitation on the dinner portions. I felt lucky as I know a lot on here are put on liquid-only diets pre-op. Large amounts of veggies for dinner helped me stay full longer. Veggies that are high in Fiber like broccoli/asparagus really helped...the goal of the pre-op diet is to get your liver smaller than what it is now to give the surgeon better access to the abdominal area as they move the liver out of the way during surgery. It's a challenge for sure, but the best advice I can give is to do your best to stay busy and not dwell on it. The time will go by faster than you think and soon you'll be watching the pounds fly off!!! It's well worth it!
  14. Ok i am 3 weeks post OP and am so frustrated...i lost about 16 lbs the first 2 weeks and for the last few days i was stalled ABCs this morning i was even up a couple lbs!!! I am still on liquids for a week and then puree for 2 weeks...a couple contributing factors could be lack of protein or lack of water...very hard for me to get those in...anything else that could be causing this? Any one have suggestions to jump start my weight loss again? I am kind of freaking out...why am i torturing myself for no weight loss??!

    stall and weight gain?!

I'm so glad to read all these encouraging posts!! I have been fighting the same 4 lbs for 4 weeks & am soooo frustrated. 5-weeks out -- on soft foods. track everything that I eat on MFP. I have driven myself just about crazy trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. Averaging 700-800 cal/day. 60-64 oz of H2O & 60-70 g of protein. Reading y'all's words helped me to see that this too shall pass!!!

    Confused and in CHINA!

Like everyone has said "every one has a different experience" with their band. I did wonderful and am three weeks post-op. I'm not sure how much of a fill I will get in three weeks. My big thing is that I am not eating as much as I know I probably could. I am so scared of eating too much that I stop very quickly after I start eating. I have however been eating a little more every few days. I will agree that if you don't have a doctor close by for the "unforeseen emergency" it could be a problem. You also said that leaving and coming back was not a problem, however if you are in pain or have something that could affect your health, that is a long plane trip to begin with even if you are healthy. It is your choice when and where you have it done, but why not just have the doctor in Hong do the procedure from the beginning? There are several people who go out of the country to get their band put in place and do follow up with centers here in the states. Just a few things to think about. Have you read the complications section of this site? It did open my eyes to a lot of things I never even thought about before I had the band put in, however I was glad to know what "could go wrong if". Good Luck with your decision.

    Gross question - SORRY!!!!

I had the same thing 2-3 days post op. I got a couple painkiller shots and an antibiotic shot in the hospital, and my symptoms (identical to yours), were as a result of that medication, according to the surgeon's assistant. (Yes I called it was embarrassing). Only happened for about a day and then it was gone. I agree with the Fiber comments. 10000000%. :-)

    2 months and stalled

Hi ms Kat Measuring is a big key. As bandsters we should really be eating 1 cup at each meal. For me portion was and is a big roadblock to weight loss. You may need a fill or 2 or 3 to get to the point where one cup is enough. Also the foods you have listed...can be high in sodium and sugar depending on the product, and can cause Water retention and too much sugar actually can cause a weight gain. Bulk up on the solid Protein, alot of the items you listed are slider foods that go through so easily we can over eat them. It takes time to figure out what works for you and what doesn't. It can be frustrating I know but you will get there

2 Month Stall Finally Broken !

I have also been stalled for almost 2 months. I fluctuate up and down 5 pounds and it's driving me crazy. I have started jogging (only 1 mile-it's all I can do at this point) and I just gained another pound. How did you keep yourself motivated and keep from giving up. I'm quickly losing hope that I will ever lose weight again!
  23. I'm a day shy of 3 weeks and I'm allowed to have watermelon, but I have to wait for pineapple.
  24. Hey everyone. I had the sleeve gastrectomy a little over a month ago. The surgeon's office quoted me a price - which I was led to believe included everything. Last week, I received 2 bills in the mail (labs and anesthesiology) which come to an additional $3500! This was not expected at all and not in my budget. I'm about to review my paperwork to see WTH is going on. Anyone run into similar issues?
