  1. Your doing well, dont worry about how much others lose .. My loss was slow in the beginning and i had my doc telling me my loss was slow compared to others however they had been only sleeved.. Not revised to sleeve, so to me he was comparing oranges to apples! From what i have read generally, revised to sleeve patients lose weight slower in the beginning then they catch up, and this is what's happening to me. Just a lil advice take your measurements at least once every couple of weeks, this will show you while weight isnt coming off the scales, that its possibly shifting. Just stay on the path and keep plugging away. It will start to come off Wishing you every success with your weight loss journey xox

    WLS Revisions?

Have you gotten a revision date?
  3. Set for sleeve on the 25th. Pre-op on the 23rd and scope on 24th. Doing hiachial repair too. Had the band taken out 2 years ago due to slippage. Lost 80 pounds with band and kept it off for 7 years. Have gained 90 pounds back in last 2 years. Any other revision people here or former banders?
  4. SUNNYNYC

    Sleeve to MGB Low BMI

MGB is a better option then the rny. But if you just want to lose 10-30 lbs, then I wouldn't do any. If you are looking to lose lets say 50 or 60lbs, I would go to a good surgeon who would tailor the mgb to your weight loss. There are only 2 surgeons in USA who perform it I believe. I had mines overseas in India by dr.kurlar and so far good. I told him my concern is I want to be able to eat somewhat. With my body type and muscle mass, he did a 7 feet bypass instead of 6.5feet he does with a larger pouch. So far I am doing 70 lbs in 5.5 months. I just want to lose maybe another 30 and I have never felt hungry or I am missing out from the food. Best of all unlike the rny or sleeve, this is reversible. Make sure your surgeon has experience revising sleeve to mgb.

    Gain?

I am so happy to find this convo and I'm right there with you, unfortunately:( I was sleeved on 1/9 and total, including pre surgery, have lost about 20 lbs!!! Now, I had the band out in September (went in for port revision, woke up to hear it was out due to infection) gained 50 lbs had sleeve and have had practically ZERO restriction, ZERO when I eat!!! I have no lost, in fact I too gained about 1 pound, in the last 3 weeks. I have a copy of my operative report and not once does it give the size of the stomach that was removed. All it says is that the specimen was passed off! My leak test showed a round pouch, not a banana size so I have always questioned what was done. Other things on the report have used the work gastric reconstruction & 40 boule. I really wonder what was done, even though I have asked about 5 times, I get the same answer. I am walking, doing my shakes and limiting my hourly intake as per my doctor, to about 3 ounces. I could just keep eating and eating if I don't walk away...that is the little restriction I feel. Had a slice of pizza, not one issue. I work with people that will tell me the pain they get if they overeat is so obvious...really? I'm so discouraged and truly wonder if my stomach is bigger because I didn't have a lot to loose?? Thoughts? Anyone? I need to know I'm not the only one!
  6. Band07

    Sleeve to MGB Low BMI

I started with lapband 2007 lost over 100 lbs, maintained well, did great but decided to revise to sleeve September 2013, Since then Iv struggled everyday ! I weigh 10 lbs more today than I did the day of surgery. Yes I can eat as much as I want, I have little to no restriction and I have xray pics showing a very large sleeve.
  7. I know my band to sleeve revision has given me a second chance at LIFE! I wish i had done this sooner. I was banded 5 years ago and had the revision to sleeve on Oct 2014. Ive lost more weight with the sleeve than what i ever did with the terrible band! I wish you all the best with your weight loss journey.

    January Sleevers ❄️

THE DREADED STALL at 8 weeks post-op. Had to come sometime. Had my 2 month checkup and the nurse said to get off the scales so often. She said I'm losing even if the scales don't show it and try weighing once a month. Yikes! Also noted that I am slow to heal and not to fuss about it. Everyone is different. My tiny-tummy takes a few hours to wake up each AM. I on liquids for the 1st 4 hours of the day. I'm still on soft food the rest of the day otherwise I'm pretty uncomfortable (not painful tho) and can still vomit introducing new foods. So I'm sticking to a small range of foods I know I can eat. Increasing exercise as I can. The fantastic news is I can finally drink a glass of water pretty much the same as pre-surgery. I sure missed that! And things are tasting close to normal. The scary part is I think I'm starting to get tempted to eat carbs which to this point didn't interest me. What a steep learning curve this sleeve is! I had no idea. (I'm a lap band to sleeve revision and this learning to eat is much harder. But the lap band hurt SO MUCH MORE. Nurse also told me that after the initial healing process there is a LOT LESS complications with sleeve, gastric bypass and other. Lap band has many more complications after healing cuz of foreign object which can erode, slip, break and just plain hurt. So happy to have that thing out of me. Best to all of you January sleevers, we can DO THIS!
  9. I feel like my band to sleeve revision is giving me a 2nd chance. I had the band in 2008 and did really well the first year to 18 months until I got a fill that was too tight. From there I went downhill, eating slider foods and my bad habits all came back to where I gained almost all my weight back. I'm 4 weeks out and I'm back to the beginning eating healthy and small portions I know that I'm going to have to work hard but I feel like this gave me a second chance
  10. I know this is a zombie thread, revised from the dead, but I love your husband!!! Sounds like a keeper to me!
  11. I just had a revision on 2/20/15 and I feel great. My band slipped after about 8 months in, but I was almost at my goal. At my sleeve surgery I was 145 lbs and as of today, I'm 135 lbs. I feel good except for the pureed stage diet. I'm not hungry at all. I'm happy I made this choice and grateful to have a doctor who fought the insurance company since my bmi was normal already. I cannot imagine losing my tool after losing all this weight. Good luck to you.
  12. Help! I am 5 months post RNY. I had band to RNY revision and was laced with complications (leaking, feeding tube, fistuals, PICC line etc). I have a remaining gastro-gastric fistula which is not closing with conservative (wait and see) approaches. I have lost about 116lbs in 5 months. Still 80lbs from goal weight. I see from a medscape article there are many approaches to deal with fistuals. My question to those with gastro-gastric fistuals: 1) Did you have the fistula repaired? If so, by what method? 2) Has anyone lived sucessfully with the fistula and maintained weight loss? My fear is after going through this the fistula will stretch and I will lose the restriction effect of the RNY. Please share your stories with me! Best, Janine
  13. On another forum I posted that I was banded in 2007. For me, it was a nightmare.....either too tight or too loose and my doc couldn't get a handle on it. It was taken out, port and all, in October 2014 after months of being awakened in the middle of the night with vomit forcefully coming out of my nose...... Since then, believe it or not I have gained back almost 60 pounds! I have new insurance which is Blue Shield of California. After a consult with my surgeon on a Monday a few weeks ago, I decided to revise to RNY. I asked her about the sleeve and she said she will not revise to a sleeve, ever, due to scar tissue as she believes there is a greater chance for leakage. Also, if someone has a predisposition for reflux like I did, she is especially adamant. Anyway, they submitted whatever they needed to submit to my insurance two days later on Wednesday and on Monday I was approved! I figured they must have seen my photo and said, "hell, we better get this gal in here quick", being that I'm gaining so fast, lol! I spoke with my surgeon on the Monday I was approved and she scheduled me for bypass on Monday, 3/31/15. Everything happened so fast my head is spinning! She asked me to lose 10pounds by then which I think I can do but no special diet or anything. And since I'm revising, I don't have to do the whole psychologist, nutritionist thing. I am feeling a little scared yet blessed at the same time! Marieze
  14. Just my two cents: I had the lap band in 2010, lost about 30 lbs and started having complications. Went for two years for fill after fill after unfill until finally I was fed up with never hitting "the spot". I've had my band completely unfilled for two years and still cannot eat dense Proteins or raw veggies. After researching revision surgeries last summer, I had my heart set on a VSG until I did a few tests and my surgeon found that my esophagus was weakened due to the band, so he recommends bypass, which I'll be getting this month.
  15. There are lots of people here who love their sleeve and have done well revising from one to the other, I sadly am not one of them, but look at it this way, if you're not happy now and not losing then what do you have to lose by revising ?

  17. I am a 45 year old male who is 5'10/270- I had a lap band put in in 2010. My lowest weight has been 230 and I balloon back and forth . I want the band OUT it is almost completely filled with no restriction. If I weighed anything under 200 I would be pretty fit. Here are my concerns 1. Do I just get the band taken out and go to normal anatomy and lose it my on own? 2. I was positive for H. Pylori and I am worried about complications even though I have had 5 knee surgeries and band surgery with no complications, and I am fairly healthy. 3. I personally know 2 people that have lost about 100 pounds a piece with sleeve that highly recommend it. I need the weight off my right knee because of 4 surgeries and arthritis as I am a coach and need to get around. I am at the phase where I schedule the surgery Monday. I would appreciate an of your stories, ideas and feedback - Thanks
  18. Some people are very successful with the band, but knowing what I know now... the rate of failure, the rate of complications, slippage, rejection, etc and the difficulty most of my banded friends have with meat and other foods we're SUPPOSED to be favoring, I'd not have one. I also know a few folks who've had complications after the sleeve procedure, stricture, gallbladder, blood clots. The difference is, I don't know any sleeved person who's been damaged beyond repair after being sleeved. They've all recovered from their complications and would do it over again if given the choice. Unfortunately, I know a few folks who weren't so lucky with the band, having so much internal damage they needed revision to bypass or worse, or having continued problems after it was removed. It's true, the sleeve is an "irreversible" surgery. That is scary, but for me, lap band complications... much scarier and more frequent.

    Long term data

Well, as best I can tell from reading published research (please do this!) and reading these forums for years... the main long term risks of the sleeve are: 1. Not making goal/regain. I know we keep harping it is "just a tool" but it is the truth.... it takes effort to sustain a significant weight loss. Do not be fooled, you CAN regain weight even with a small tummy. 2. Acid reflux. There is evidence that even people who do pretty well with this early on MIGHT develop this problem even 3-4 years down the road. I don't recall the percentage - but I think it is in the ballpark of 20% of sleevers have at least some issue with reflux in the 3-6 years down the road. Most people who get this can control it with meds, but if it is really really bad might have to revise to bypass. I am doing good 3 years out, but it is one reason I am careful to not eat big meals, I try to baby my sleeve on this point... 3. Emotional issues. As a wise woman once said "you don't get to be 300# without having some emotional baggage." Some people feel depressed losing their best friend (obesity? overeating?), some people have addictive behaviors and transfer it to booze or something else, some people struggle with changing relationships. It's a big change. I feel I have done really well. I don't think I realized I was signing up to transform my whole life, but that is what has happened. It hasn't always been easy, but now I am feeling like I am living a life closer to my real heart.

    Anyone from Tennessee

[/quote Soon 2Bscandalous did you have insurance if so how long did it take to get a reply from them I have band 8 yrs ago did great until about 18 mons ago it slipped I had it removed now getting sleeve, excited to get back to being me and my size lol!! I had to do self-pay bc when i went to him they said i wasnt big enough for revision that was lime 7 yrs ago
  21. I chose the sleeve because it freaks me out to think about a foreign object hanging out in my body. And all the complication with the low success rate didn't make the band worth it to me. I know many people have been successful with it but I think there's a lot to consider when a site like this has an entire section dedicated to band revisions. I have had no trouble with my sleeve. Works like a charm. Dumping syndrome does not effect sleeve patients so we have to use our own will power to avoid sweets. I know some people have a lot of nausea but I haven't. I never considered the bypass cause re-routing of my internals freaked me out too. My doc told me the band is being phased out. Too much maintenance for too little result. Everyone is different though and you may see benefits to the band that others don't. Just make the decision based on what's right for you, and not other people. I understand your family wants to support you but only you know how much time & effort you want to put into this.
  22. Hey all. My surgery was Dec. 2, 2013, I had the gastric sleeve. For a couple months after that I was having major nausea and couldn't even sip water, so I was hospitalized three times for dehydration. Had numerous tests done and turns out it was my gallbladder. My surgeon removed that along with a hernia and my appendix, and revised my sleeve. I was better after that, I could finally drink and eat a little. Then I lost myself. I was so depressed and traumatized by the experience that I was mentally incapable of being happy. I had support from family and my boyfriend, but it took until just a couple weeks ago to finally start becoming the person I wanted to be. I was eating only protein bars, but around 8 of them a day. I am 213 and my lowest was 174 and I had reached 230 pounds from the constant eating of protein bars. I never exercised and never tried to. The dehydration almost killed me. I didn't want to move from my bed. I was seeing therapists and psychiatrists trying different medications for depression. It took a loooong time, but I've finally found the right medication 2 weeks ago, and actually started going to the gym 6 days a week! I'm eating better and have not even thought about those dang protein bars once. Starting at 230 I'm back down to 213, but I'm stuck. The scale will not move and it's been this way for a week and a half. This had not deterred me from going to the gym, but it's disappointing, and I'm afraid of going back into my difficult place again if this keeps up. Thanks sooo much for taking the time to read this lengthy post, and if you have any suggestions or similar stories please comment!

    Broken Band=Broken Heart(Lost Hope)

I'm sorry you have to go through this. Maybe you can get Care Credit and put the OOP on that so you can get your surgery? Maybe the doc should start at the port site and make a small incision to see if maybe the port is just flipped?? Then if that's not the case, go for the bigger surgery to look at the band. There has got to be something else he can try if you can't get the money, CT maybe? There could be a kink in the tubing?? I hope you can get it figured out soon. I've had multiple complications with my band and will be having it removed and revised to RNY in January 2016. Best of luck!

    Is my NUT nuts?

Eating more than 4oz at a time will eventually cause my stomach to burst and will lead to needing a revision. Not likely after the 2 month mark. Eating past full is BAD for you no doubt, but to actually use the words, "You're gonna burst your pouch". Errr, No. You should try to never feel restriction. Eh, it can be a good thing to actively try to "under eat" your sleeve to a point, but you need to get an much nutrition as you can too. Depends on what I'm eating I guess. If it's high quality I may try to get a few more bites down. If it's bar food, I may try to stop earlier. We should chew our food for 20 minutes. That's just stupid. We can never eat fruit with skin again, including grapes, apples, etc. Again. Just stupid. Most sleeves digest fruit skins and strawberry seeds just fine after the break in period. I know mine does. Test it out and if yours does, no problemo. If these things don't sit well, avoid them. Simple. Sounds like advice for someone with diverticulitis. The 4 oz we eat MUST include 50% Protein (2oz) and the other 50% must be vegetables, fruit, and starch in that order. Really? It matters HOW we get the protein in? Why? Most of us are told "protein first", yes. Personally, I tend to do protein first, but there are days I wouldn't get the recommended amount without supplementation. I LIKE variety in my diet so I supplement protein. It's rare I don't get at least 80g per day. Sometimes, when I make my favorite pork roast, or roast a chicken, its ALL I eat. About 3-4 oz of it and I'm done. We should only take Flintstone chewables for a Multivitamin, anything else is a waste of money. There's a lot of sugar in chewable Vitamins. That's the recommendation? I used chewables for the first few months until I could take pills easily. Today, (and for life) I take a "petitie" multivit 2x day, extra D3, B12, Calcium and Iron on the schedule prescribed by my doc. Partially educated sounds accurate. You should have all of this stuff (post op care and feeding) documented by your surgical team somewhere. ow does the Nut's advice jive with that?
  25. Going to my PCP today to get paperwork filled out for 6 month diet history. BCBS of Michigan said just have to show six months of consecutive attempts of diet history. Surgeon's office says doesn't have to be consecutive months, just 6 months in a 4 year time period. Ugh! So, better to play it safe than sorry, I do have a 4 month time frame I followed Weight Watchers and will show my Dr the online receipt. I finished WW not losing anything really, but went back to her two months later and tried Belviq for a few months. So with WW on board for 4 months, I'm sure we can come up with something for that two month gap when I didn't "formally" follow a plan. I still try to follow a pretty healthy diet since I have a lapband and still need to lose, and my Dr is encouraging this revision. Just looking for any tips/wording/ideas you have found to be helpful with the diet history! Thanks!
