Traveling cross country-5 weeks post op

I wanted to emphasize what @FutureSylph said. I have a cross-country flight planned for 5 weeks after surgery and the surgeon said to make sure I walked around every hour. I am not sure it's necessary every hour in the car because you'll be able to change positions better, but definitely get out and walk around a bit frequently because you don't want to risk blood clots. That's a risk after any surgery, and if you're at a higher weight (like we all are), it's an even higher risk. The food is a bit of a lesser issue, but I agree that you should be able to find things like protein shakes (Make sure the sugar count is low), cheese sticks, eggs, and order refried beans, ground meat dishes, fish, etc and just throw things out or share with a family member. If you stop at subway or any sandwich place you should be able to order a sandwich and just eat the deli meat (that's on my plan for soft foods, not sure about yours). I haven't found restaurants in the US willing to do half portions in most cases.
  2. I was like you. I started with a BMI just barely over 35, had tried keto, crossfit 6x a week, intermittent fasting. I dropped weight, but it was impossible for me to stay consistent. I am a month out from sleeve surgery and have lost a little over 30 lbs. Even in this month alone, there would have been several times when I would have fallen off a diet due to "life" but the sleeve has kept me on track. I'm slowly but surely detoxing from food, and eating for nutrition rather than comfort. It's proving to be a very useful tool. Sent from my SM-N976V using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. My first reaction to the fasting option was sustainability. Can you sustain such an eating plan for the rest of your life? Because losing weight & keeping it off is a lifetime behavioural change. Personally, I fasted for most of my high school years. No breakfast, no lunch, 4 multi grain crackers for afternoon tea & a healthy dinner nothing else all to try to maintain my weight. Did it work? No! I put on almost a stone every year & I was way more active then too. All it did was kill my metabolism. The sustainability aspect was the game changer for me. I can follow any restrictive diet for a few weeks or months & did many, many times. But as soon as I reached the weight loss goal I gave myself or when the diet became too hard to continue, I’d just go back to eating how I did before & start gaining again. As some posters above have said weight loss surgery is a tool. If you use it, take advantage of the benefits it affords & make changes to how you eat, what you eat & understand why you eat you can be successful in losing weight & maintaining. The time before surgery & after while you are losing are the time to work through the answers to the what, why & how you eat & to begin establishing new behaviours. Don’t be afraid to seek help from a therapist & a dietician. Just make sure the changes you make are sustainable & will complement your lifestyle & how you want to live your life. It’s something you will have to do forever. I am biased though, the surgery has been a successful experience for me. From deciding to have surgery to actually having the surgery was a very short period - less than two months from GP referral to theatre (much easier process here in Australia though). Don’t know if I would have gone through with it if I had to undergo 1-4 years of pre requisite steps & approval processes. I’d choose the shortest & quickest path forward. Though you know yourself best & know how much support you will need. But it is your decision. Good luck whatever you choose to do.
  4. Don't worry. Stalls happen. Try eating a little bit MORE as Sunnyway said. Six spoonfuls is not a lot. Energy in vs. energy out - you are doing more than you are eating, so the stall WILL break and you WILL lose weight once again.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

This is totally the "three week stall" that so many people (literally, there's more than 100,000 posts about it just here alone) talk about. It's not always at three weeks and it can last for a little while. Just keep doing your thing and sticking to your plan and it WILL come off. At the end of the day it's calories in vs. calories out and there's no way you're eating enough calories with a VSG to be able to overcome your daily metabolism. Much more likely that your body has finished dumping its excess water weight PLUS all the fluids they jam into you during surgery... the stall will break and you will lose weight again.
  6. In simple speak, your body is being stressed so it shuts down & the stall occurs. Just like when you’re mentally or emotionally stressed & want to shut your door, go to bed & pull the covers over your head. Remember your body has been going through a lot - surgery, reduced calorie diet, changes to activity level, etc. The stall will break when your body is ready. You don’t have to change a thing. Just follow your plan. The small adjustments that you make to your diet & activity as you progress through your plan are enough for your body to cope with without making other larger changes.
  7. I started a little higher. At the beginning of my journey, I weighed 463. My surgery was August 25 2021 and I weighed 430. I'm 5 weeks and 3 days post op and I weigh 382. I have lost a total of 81 pounds since May 2021, 47 of that is post op. I feel bad talking about my weight with people who start much lower. I have seen comments where they are so defeated because they haven't lost like I have. I wish there were support groups for each weight loss group. Sent from my SM-G991U using BariatricPal mobile app

    September Surgery Buddies!!

I had my surgery (VSG) on the 1st of September. I’ve been stuck at the same weight now for 2 weeks. What the heck? I feel like I’m already failing. I get enough protein and water in, I’m constantly active. I struggle with severe depression and anxiety and I’m afraid that stress is still affecting my hormones like they did pre-surgery. A month after my surgery and I’m only down 10 pounds. I feel like a failure, and like I did this for nothing.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

I had my surgery March 9th and post surgery have lost only 40 pounds (55 including pre op). I have been stalled for about a month and am worried that I will not lose anymore. Fingers crossed the stall will break.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Well I had my GS on April 6th. Surgery weight 118kg (260lbs) and post op 6 months I am 98kg (216lbs). I walk a lot, ride my bike, swim but my stalls are often and long. Still happy that I have lost weight but frusterated when I compare with all you guys. What could be the issue? Is there anyone else out there 👀
  11. Sometimes you have to eat MORE to jumpstart losing during a stall, especially if you have been trying to cut down even further than your plan allows. One's metabolism goes into starvation mode and HANGS ON for dear life. But if you eat a bit more you can get your metabolism back on track.
  12. I had my surgery (sleeve) 7 days ago. I am moving to California Oct 29th. (Military) We will be traveling for 4-9 days (depending on kids) from South Georgia. I was supposed to have surgery this past summer. Then they made it for august and then covid got worse. So finally last week got it done. But now so many worries. Has anyone travelled Long distance after sleeve surgery? Anyone who has any tips or tricks they learned or have any good ideas. I have no idea how I’m gonna do this when I’m limited on what I can eat and we will be on the road for a while. Just getting nervous.
  13. No thanks

    TriCare Approved Now I Wait:(

That is where I just had my sleeve done Jacksonville. I too had to be approved through tricare. I was supposed to get my surgery done though this past summer because we’re moving at the end of October. but tricare took til august to approve. Was supposed to have it done last month but then covid. They just opened up for surgeries in Jacksonville so hopefully you’ll be in. Now we are pcsing to California and I’ll only be 5 weeks post op. Best of luck!
  14. The fasting coach will probably not be a good stand alone tool. I've gained some weight and struggle to take it off. I'm fours years out. One of my tools is to fast. I fast 12 hours a day. I'm trying for the 36hrs 2x a week but that's a tall order. The point is, you will need to combine tools and not just depend on one. The surgery option is a good one combined (later on ) with the fasting option. As you've stated before you have achieved great success only to digress back to your starting weight. Weight Loss Surgery(WLS) is a great tool to "jump start" your weight loss but it is no means a stand alone tool. After 8-12 months we begin to revert back to , as I say being mere mortals again. No longer are we able to lose weight while sleeping or just by being alive. Our weight loss superpowers are gone. It now, takes a mindful and consistent maintenance program. This is where fasting, exercise, being conscience of what we eat and how we really changed our lifestyle during the first 8- 12 months. WLS is a great tool but it is not the golden bullet to lifelong weight lose and health stability. I'd say, go with the WLS, get that big jump start, start a mindful maintenance program consisting of many tools. Good luck to you and I wish you the best of health.

Interesting. We aren't allowed vitamins till week 5

    Hello!

Congratulations! Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Remember in the old dieting days how many dietitians would say two pounds a week is a big loss? You’ve lost 66 in eight weeks… that’s incredible.
  17. I wouldn’t pay one percent of that fee for a “fasting coach”. How ridiculous. You have a fourth option, which is bariatric surgery in one of the border cities in Mexico; most are in Tijuana. You fly to San Diego (now that it’s allowed), then it’s 20 minutes to the border and your clinic picks you up on the Mexican side. It’s much cheaper than self pay in either Canada or the US, and the doctors tend to be US-certified as well as obviously qualified in Mexico. You’d want to talk to your PCP in Canada before going this route to make sure she’s comfortable with ordering labs (for iron, vitamins, liver function, lipids, metabolic panel, etc.) afterwards. I am two and a half weeks out and having the sleeve has already given me so much of my life back. Between pre-op and post-op loss I am only 5 kg from the halfway point of my journey.
  18. Hello my surgery twin! I just got my November 8 surgery date yesterday. I spent years researching the band and sleeve, but this revision surgery came up a little unexpectedly, and I feel unprepared but still very excited. I hope to do a ton of reading over the next few weeks. :) Hope all is going well with you. J in sunny Florida

    The infernal itch

@DJN3 Days is very early. I felt pretty terrible at 3 days too! I'm 2.5 weeks out now and I feel a lot better. The first few days I only got about 30 oz of water in, and that was just by keeping a bottle of water in my hand whenever I was upright. Have you tried Fairlife Nutrition Plan? They are the best tasting in my opinion. They are available in bulk at Costco. (There are a lot of Fairlife drinks but you have to be careful because some have lots of sugar!) The chewable vitamins were impossible for me. I ended up buying the capsules, even though I was supposed to take chewables for the first month. I could sort of tolerate the chewables if I took them with food, but even then, I was likely to gag and I felt sick for an hour or so. I tried two different brands of chewables. I haven't had any problems with the capsules (I'm using ProCare Health one a day with 45 mg iron). Good luck!

3 options: which one would you choose?

I have tried about a million online coaching/nutrition programs and failed at every single one. I just did not find that it was structured enough or supportive enough to help me make permanent, impactful changes. That may not be true for everyone, but that was my experience. As for the surgery options, my insurance (US) covers bariatric surgery and I've consulted 3 times over the years but always chickened out. The time commitment to get through the program, the insane amount of tests and pre-op appointments, and the sheer number of hoops to jump through always became overwhelmingly discouraging and I gave up. So, I opted to go the self-pay route in Mexico. From first consult to surgery was almost exactly 3 months. The cost out of pocket including flights, hotels, meds, etc. was less than what my deductible and co-pays would have been had I used my insurance. Additionally, I met with my primary care doc prior to surgery and secured her support. She will be doing all my post-op labs and can provide ongoing dietary guidance in conjunction with my surgeon's RD. I am only a week and a half post-op, but I am SO glad I finally did it. You need to weight the options in light of your own needs, what kind of support will help you be most successful, what are you willing to commit to as a timeline, what fits in your finances, etc. Ultimately you just need to get gut-level honest with yourself, and then decide. Whatever you do, I'm sure you will find success!
  22. Hi all! Just wanted to introduce myself. I am a few days short of my two month post op anniversary (RNY). So far I have lost 66lbs (starting weight 470, highest weight 515). I am still on the chopped diet but I have been working in whole foods here and there. Still playing the "what's going to stay down" game, but enjoying the journey so far! I was kind of expecting a little more weight loss at this point but hell, any is better than none! I have hit a few stalls in the process but nothing longer than a few days. I look forward to "meeting" some of you! Sent from my SM-S127DL using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. I would not spend $1000 for someone to "coach" me through fasting. What are they going to tell you? Don't eat? Also, fasting is not a long term plan to lose weight and keep it off. The only thing with a lot of evidence is surgery, although it is certainly not an easy fix. I'm 2.5 weeks out and I'm pretty miserable. I would go one of the two surgery routes, personally. Which you choose is up to you. I'm guessing you are in Canada. I'm in the US and I had private insurance, and waited about 7.5 months for my surgery. The wait was hard, but I spent the time working on eating better and exercising. However, waiting 1-4 years would have been unacceptable to me and I would have paid out of pocket. To be honest, the support I'm getting now from my supposedly top of the line surgery center is pretty lousy, so I wouldn't assume that you'd get amazing support from HealthCanada. I've heard from people in the UK that NHS provides really lousy follow up, too. But, I don't know how much resources you have available to devote to this process, and you definitely don't want to bankrupt yourself to have surgery. I know many people have gone to Mexico to have the surgery and been very successful, but it wouldn't be my choice. There are so many resources online, both these message boards and also I love the facebook group "my level 10 life" (the person who started it has a ton of YouTube videos but she's not always to my taste). You can also hire a bariatric therapist, and that's probably a good idea regardless of which path you choose. Good luck and keep checking in!
  24. I hope you're doing well! I am two weeks post-op and had many of the same fears you did especially about throwing up--I actually didnt get sick for the first week and a half post-surgery and the one time I did was completely my fault (went to bed too quickly after eating). If you need to burp, for the first couple days it will feel like you're going to throw up, but once you pass the air it will subside. Take the antinausea meds you were prescribed and take it easy for a few days. You've earned your recovery time!
  25. Hello, Over the course of October I will meet with three different medical professionals to choose a weight-loss option. First I will meet with a coach from The Fasting Method. She specializes in Fasting regimens and Behavioural Therapy. The cost is around $1000 for 4 online coaching sessions and an online support group. Most of the fasting I will do myself and will need a lot of determination to stick to the 36-hour fasting protocol they recommend. Next, I have a consultation with a surgeon at a private clinic. The cost will be 14,000 for a gastric sleeve and the surgery would be completed before the end of the year. They provide all of the medical services for surgery plus 3 months of nutrition counseling and medical follow-up at 1 month, 3.5 months, and 1-year post-op. They also have an online facebook support group. Finally, I have an appointment with a new General Practitioner who could provide me with a referral to a bariatric clinic within a hospital. This process would be covered by the province if I were accepted into the program. However, the process could take several years (1-4 years) before I received the surgery. Yet they would provide the most support both before and after surgery in order to be successful. I am really unsure of which option is best for me and I wonder if other people might have insight into what could work for them knowing what they know now. The first option, fasting, I have tried on my own and was successful for 8-12 months but gained all the weight back and then some. The second is the quickest way to put in place a permanent tool that I will have to use on my own to lose weight. It is also the most expensive. The third option would provide me with a lot of support and I think I probably do need some type of talk therapy. I'm expecting this surgery and the dramatic weight loss to be like an emotional rollercoaster for me. However, I do not have many obesity-related complications just yet (such as diabetes, hypertension, etc.) although my BMI is around 40. How much support did you need? Which option would you choose knowing what you know now?
