This pre op diet is killing me

I did the pre-op diet for 2 weeks and yes by a certain point I had to make myself eat and drink. I had to do Protein shakes, sf pudding, light yogurt, Gatorade and Water. Not much variety there and everything was sweet. Maybe try spicing things differently for variety? I couldn't wait to get to the surgery date for it to be over but now I am on a week of 3 Protein Shakes a day and sf popsicles...lol Just keep your eyes on the prize and enjoy the weight you are losing as a by product of the pre-op diet...they are pounds that you are ahead of the game for after surgery. Good luck and hang in there!!
  2. chicken nuggets? Most chicken nuggets contain fillers that might surprise you, and its not lean chicken. I am seven months out and have lost 130 pounds since surgery. The most important thing I have learned from this experience is that being disciplined to a very structured way of eating is difficult in the beginning and can be exhausting at times. However, it definitely pays off. You get use to it and eventually realize how out of control and problematic your old way of eating really was. I still enjoy eating with the family and get togethers. My food choices are wiser and now are more planned. If I am going out for more than 3 hours, I know that I need to take something with me (Protein shake, turkey sticks, jurkey, yogurt) so that I don't get too hungry and eat something I shouldn't (like my child's leftover chicken nuggets).

Thanks!! I was wanting to try the Fage Greek yogurt with honey, and just wasn't sure. I'll try a small bit and see how it goes.

    Pre-op diet is a b***h

Well... It's hard! I relate to you so much! I find my self noticing all food around me even more! You don't even realise how much food is always around you. Watching my family eat is difficult. I'm only on day five and I am hoping I can get through it. I haven't weighed my self. Don't wanna be disappointed and get discouraged by weighing my self often so I'm waiting a week. I'm from the UK so my hospital have given me a slightly different diet which is 4 muller light yogurts and 4 cans of slim fast Soup or any soup that is 100 calories each. I feel like it's starvation! But I'm hanging in there????
  10. I'm struggling with this pre op diet. Soup and yogurt everyday! Feels like starvation but I'm hanging in there! ???? How are you guys all do?

    Strawberries in yogurt

I was told no seeds till 3 months, too. For me, presweetened/flavored yogurts always tasted way to sweet (even before surgery). I use plain Fage or Chobani yogurt and flavor it to my liking using Torani syrups, honey, Protein powder or pureed fruit. Gives me a much better protein/carb ratio and the flavors are nearly endless....vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, cherry, English toffee, raspberry, tiramisu, lime, mango, coconut, peach, hazelnut, Peanut Butter, almond, pumpkin pie, banana, blueberry, salted caramel, etc.

    Tiny pouch?

I love how we all handle things so differently. I feel like i am so out of touch with my pouch fullness. I am nine days postop, I have had no trouble eating a 5oz yogurt, Im worried that my pouch is too BIG and that I'll never lose the weight! I was hoping for more of an obvious restricted feeling. wanna trade?
  13. Week 1- clear liquids including Protein shakes made with Water (2 a day) taking in 80 oz. of liquids a day by the end of the week. Week 2-Soft Protein Foods, eggs(soft scrambled, soft boiled or poached)low fat cottage cheese, low fat shredded cheese or string cheese, Dannon light and fit greek vanilla yogurt, mashed or pureed pinto or black Beans and 4 oz. Protein shake made with milk 3 times a day Week 3- one protein shake made with milk 4 oz at a time, add chicken, turkey, fish and soy products Week 6 -add non starchy vegetables Three Months- add unsweetened soft and/or peeled fruit up to one time per day Six to Twelve Months- Add (if I want) beef, pork and other red meats, starchy veggies,Pasta and rice and any other foods I want as long as they are low fat I don't reach the final stage until June 15th. As of now, while I'm sure I'll occasionally have the starchy carbs, I'm not planning on them being a regular part of my food plan. I'll have to see how beef and pork work out.
  14. I was eating a yogurt with strawberries in it (I didn't add them fresh) and I remember reading something about strawberry seeds..should I avoid strawberries (I know i'm not allowed to have them fresh fruit yet..not until 3 months post-op). And please post what brand yogurts you're eating..i'm afraid my choices have too many carbs.

    Down in the dumps!

I had a day where I was trying to get my Protein in very early on and it was just crappy. Everything I tried to drink was just horrible. I was on clears, and the Isopure was working (it's not great, but I've had worse), but I was so tired of it that I was trying the other things I'd bought in preparation for surgery. My nose was so sensitive to that "protein" smell I could barely get anything down and it was all disgusting to me. I was definitely frustrated. Luckily the next day I got to start the full liquids so shakes and all that got introduced back in. It was so much better because there is a bit more choice than clear options. (Although even then there were days it was hard to finish my protein goal because it was just really sweet by the end of those two weeks.) You will get through it. It's not easy, but it is definitely worth it. Stick to the plan and don't let yourself rationalize eating off plan. Especially not while your stomach is so new. You will make it and you'll be so happy when you get that 1-2 oz portion of refried Beans or yogurt lol.
  18. I was sleeved on the 27th too! I am still on the puréed stage until week 5. I've been living off homemade refried beans and yogurt. I can't wait to move onto soft foods! I'm down 28 lbs so far.

I've been doing Fat free cottage cheese, yogurt, ricotta cheese bake, refried beans with melted mozzarella cheese, low sodium tomato soup with broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and onion puréed.Oh okay! I'm on full liquids for two weeks so can't eat those quite yet! But thanks for the tips ????It was like heaven in my mouth, eating those refried beans. It'll be your turn to eat then before you know it lol

  21. I'm on day 3 and do fine all day, it is from 6:30 on I am starving. I am allowed 3 shakes per day and 3 oz of lean meat and 1/2 cup green vegetables or 1/4 c cottage cheese. The one thing I noticed is that because I do not make my shakes with milk ( I use water because I do not like milk) I am only consuming about 660 calories instead of 800. I wonder if I added some yogurt to the shakes as a milk replacement if it would be ok.

I can't drink any protein! Help

I am sorry to hear your getting sick... I went through this same thing.... EVERYTHING made me sick... I ended up dehydrated and at the hospital 2 weeks out.. I Was bad off.. they checked my pouch and everything for leaking and said your fine.. IV and home I went to suffer.. Like others have said.. Try other things that contain protein.. Yogurt, cottage cheese, and even creamy Soup. Go to UNJURY.com and try their stuff... it is one of the few that I can tolerate. They have it in single serve packs so you can see if you can tolerate it. What you are describing is dumping syndrome.. or that's what I Call it... massive gas, stomach pains and then off to the rest room for the final explosion.. Use Gas X for the gas, space the Proteins out a little more... Try mixing it with something other than milk.. if your using it.. I found I became lactate intolerant for a few months post op. Hope this helps..
  23. Most artificial sweeteners upset my tiny tummy. I shoot for Protein bars and shakes that use stevia and/or erythritol. I'd choose ones with real sugar if they made any. When I bake I use raw sugar. I use monk fruit in my homemade protein hot chocolate mix. Regular Torani and Davinci syrups to sweeten my plain Greek yogurt. Real maple syrup on my pancakes. Honey in my tea. artificial sweeteners do the same thing to your brain and body's insulin levels as real sugar and will still give you carb cravings. The only difference is the calories. Erythritol is the only one I know of that doesn't affect your insulin levels.
  24. I hit my new normal at 12 months. Didn't really have a goal, more of an I knew it when I'd get there and I did. BMI of 22 body fat % of 18. I have been working on finding maintenance for six months now. Like the others I was never a ketosis person. I was probably in and out at certain points but it was never a goal, I ate fruit all along and some good carbs (no bread rice white potato). I def had to add it calories to stop losing. I eat more small meals during the day. Went from 4-5 to 6-8, but my "meal" is very small--Greek yogurt w fruit, turkey and cheese roll ups, Peanut Butter and celery, tuna w mayo and green onions, beef Jerky, a kind bar, a Quest bar, half a cup of oatmeal w half scoop of Protein powder, half a turkey burger patty w/mustard and avocado, etc. I also run, a lot. Marathon next weekend. I do yoga 2-3 times a week. So I need my calories. I aim for good clean choices 80% of the time and the other 20% I chose what I like (yeah a cookie or a few French fries or popcorn, whatever). Then I don't feel deprived. I feel normal. It's working for me so far!
  25. I actually hit surgeon's goal (160) at 6 1/2 months. That's when I started using full fat dairy (milk, cottage cheese, yogurt) instead of fat free, eating more fruit and replacing some of my Protein bars with whole grain bars. I then hit my personal goal (150) at 7 1/2 months and got even more relaxed by eating a few more desserts, potatoes, sushi, bread, etc. I finally hit my "new normal" (138-142) around 9 months. Good, healthy food choices 80% of the time and total crap the other 20% . Definitely a lifestyle I can live with! But you are right, we all have to form our own individual maintenance plans. Just do what works and feels good and comfortable for you. It's definitely scary venturing into maintenance, but after awhile it's actually rather boring.
