  1. For the last years I have been struggling with diets. I gain the pounds in a few days that takes me weeks to loose . I'm tired of doing diets that don't work. I'm 50 pounds overweight and considering doing a VSG. Do you think is a good idea? I'm scared of the surgery scars. How bad are the scars? Someone can send me a picture to have an idea of how the scars would look.

    Decisions decisions...

I had the sleeve. Sleeve is the popular WLS at the moment. For me the slower weight loss was preferable because I wanted to minimize excess skin. I was also not interested in malabsorption or "re-wiring" my internal plumbing and dumping syndrome was NOT something I wanted risk. I was also not interested in having a foreign body in my body and to be honest, the negative stories I heard about slippage and the like turned me off the lap band. No I would not do a single thing differently. I have had a very pleasant surgical and post-op experience. My advice to you would be to research the 2 surgeries a bit more. There is some mental work you have to do regardless of which procedure you choose. If you are tempted to eat sweets, deal with that. Otherwise it will always be a temptation no matter what surgery you choose. Remember the old adage; WLS is a tool, not a magic wand. People have found ways to eat and regain with all of these surgeries. You have to be committed to doing the work.
  3. Definitely you have done a phenomenal job and you look great in your pictures. Normally, I would have gained over the course of a year so losing 50lbs to me is success. I also would recommend journaling your food intake and your activity. Perhaps using myfitnesspal.com or another site to see really how many calories you are taking in, how much liquids you are really taking in, and how many calories you are burning through activities. I was at a standstill the past couple of weeks and upped my exercising (have walked about 3 miles a day for 4 days this past week) and finally the scale moved again. You have done really well and perhaps just a little tweaking can kickstart your weight loss again. You may even need a fill too. Good luck on your continued success.
  4. I will be having gastric bypass on July 3. I started my program in Feb 2019, but have battled weight issues my whole life. I am excited and anxious about my upcoming date. I cannot imagine weighing less than I do now. At 42 years old, I've been morbidly obese my entire adult life and obese my entire life. So many thoughts run through my head about this surgery, but I tell myself to take it one baby step at a time. My program only requires 2 days liquid diet, so I don't even start that til July 1. Would love to keep in contact with you and our other July siblings [emoji16] Good luck to all of us! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    sooo worried

Guys, remember that the "squeaky wheel" gets the attention. You notice the negative stuff. AND for every negative poster on this or any other forum, there are hundreds of people who never, ever post on any forum on any subject; they are happily living their lives and enjoying the results of their surgeries. Most common problems related to the band (PBing, getting stuck) are operator error. Remember to cut your food into bites about the size of a nickel, take a bite, put your fork down and chew it well, swallow and then pick up your fork and take another bite. While the SOUND of an aggressive fill is good, the REALITY is that a very aggressive fill can likely mean that you will end up too tight and need an unfill. Go with your doctor's plan, make your regular appointments for fills and you'll get to your sweet spot soon enough. There was one poster on this forum who had to have his band removed after just six weeks because he ended up being allergic to something in his band. How often does that happen? Even less than once in a very blue moon. And, I hate to say it, some people got their bands expecting that they were basically buying weight loss. That they wouldn't have to change anything, just merrily go on along the road they were heading down before surgery and the weight would just magically disappear. They are very disappointed in their decisions about getting banded. If you follow your doctor's instructions and accept that you will have to modify your bad behaviors, and regard your band as an awesome tool, you will more than likely do fine.

    So Depressed!

Kmiller Bummer! Are you working out heavily? Muscle weighs more than fat so if your gaining muscle that could be why your not losing on the scale. Like I said measure your inches. Good luck to you! :-)

    So Depressed!

Haven't weight my self but between us my tummy seem to slim down a lot.
  10. Today was my first day of orintation for the lap band, I was told it is required to do 24 weeks of weekly visits to a prep class prior to surgery. Also, they require that you loose 10% of your body weight before surgery as well. My class will begin 9/3/08 and we have the option of doing the opifast diet during this time. Has anyone else had to go through something similar to get the surgery? I did not know the process was sooo long.
  11. I had my surgery in Australia, I had no pre-op diet or weight loss requirements. Just clear fluids day of surgery. My BMI was on the lower side at 37 so that may have been why. Different surgeons all seem to have different approaches.

    Over-eating

I'm 15 months out. I dropped 80lbs as a result of surgery. This week, I've gained 4 lbs. I'm terrified. Suddenly, I am able to eat much more than I have previously (e.g. A small chicken breast, green Beans, and a bite or two of potatoes). I have no idea what to attribute this to other than sharing a small Sprite with my husband last week. I never drink carbonation, and only did because it was the only thing in the car. Foolish, I know. Painful, too. I will just do without next time. Back to unsweetened tea, Water, and coffee! Question: Have I stretched my stomach out permanently? I'm very worried this is the beginning of a huge regain. I'm starting a liquid fast today to try to circumvent what's happening. Advice, please!!! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  13. The mandatory weight loss is to denonstrate you can comply with your nutrition requirements and thus evidence that the surgery is more likely to help you. How much you need to lose varies. I had to show I lost something every month... absolutely no gain... but something lost. Othere have specific weight goals. And some docs dont care if you gain, but most want a loss. 14. I understood weight loss is required for everyone though not linked to insurance requirements in Aust as it is in the US. Basically, the weight loss is to reduce any fattiness around your liver which allows the surgeon greater visualisation & movement around your stomach when they operate. It also shows a commitment to the weightloss program. You will be sent to a dietician who will put you on a diet & will monitor your pre surgical weight loss. They will guide you through the post surgical weight loss journey as well. I was put on a keto diet for two weeks prior to surgery & lost 4.2kgs. My BMI was 35. Your surgeon will have his requirements as will your insurance company based on your individual case. You can’t really compare. Treat this pre surgery time as when you begin to re-educate yourself & start your new lifestyle - how you eat, what you eat & new exercise routine. This is a life long change.

I will be banded on April 30th!

Hi Beth! I am still pre-op, so really can't answer any of your questions, but wanted to say Hi and welcome you to LBT! What I can say is this: All of us here have some sort of issue with food, otherwise, we wouldn't even be considering WLS. If you aren't ready to deal with those issues, no weight loss program will be successful. The band is only a tool to help with weight loss. The work is still up to you. Yes, the thought of failing yet again is scary. As I move along through my own pre-op process, I am dealing with that fear too. But I know how terribly bad I want to be healthy, and as someone on these boards has said, "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels". Knowing how true that statement is is my ultimate goal. Good luck to you and be sure to keep us posted on your progress!
  16. I am bi-polar. Up until surgery I have been stable for almost 4 years. I was taking Welbutrin XR 450 mg am, xanax 1 mg 3 x a day and Seroquel 300 at bed. They never told me before surgery that I would not be able to use the Welbutrin XR any more. They have me on regular Welbutrin 400 mg am. (Can not take them later in the day, they keep me awake) I am snappy, anxious, depressed. I now have been isolating myself. Back to not wanting to do anything. Crying/sobbing moments at least 3x a day. I feel out of control. I am afraid they will try to put me back on an ssri, because that helped the weight gain and the loss of my depth perception. Plus the last one gave me horrible side effects and hallucinations. I cant see psych med until the first week of Feb. I see my counselor tomorrow. Anyone have/had these issues? Serious Post - Looking for Help

Generally there are two phases to weight loss surgery: the weight loss phase and the maintenance phase. The maintenance phase can sometimes be the hardest nut to crack. It is common for some people to gain a little weight after they bottom out. It is called the 20 pound bounce. But it should level out there. Some individuals gain almost all the weight back. I asked my nutritionist about this. She said a couple things. First, the tool is still there. Stretching the pouch is just a common myth. The tool is still there. Second, it takes the same amount of time that you were out of balance to return to balance. So if you gained weight for a couple years in maintenance, it will take a couple years to get back to the ideal weight. It will not happen overnight. There was a man in my small town who had weight loss surgery. He lost a tremendous amount of weight and was happy for several years. But then the pounds started adding back on and he gained all the weight back. He then realized he had a problem and put all his energy into reducing his weight. He lost it all again. One of the components of the surgery is the psychological component. If you have an overeating disorder and are contemplating suicide, that means that you have a problem in this area. And the psychological component can make it more difficult for you to achieve your goals. It must be addressed and addressed soon. So seek the help of professionals in this speciality and let them help you get back on the straight and narrow.

    Airplane Flight

First of all congratulations on getting banded. I'm getting ready to start the paperwork to go through the process. I work for the City of Ft Worth and they just recently started approving people for weight loss surgery after it being an exclusion on our insurance. I noticed that you are located in Ft Worth and went to Dr Smith. He is one of the doctors on our plan that does the Lap Band surgery. I have heard so many good things about him. So anything you can tell me about your experience so far would be great. You can email me at d.washington40@hotmail.com whenever you get time. Hope you have a great vacation. Donna

    Diabetes and Lap Band

Not all diabetes meds promote weight gain. What are you taking? I had the same experience. I was able to cut out my insulin and most of my oral meds during the pre-op liquid diet and for the first few weeks post-op. But when you start eating again, your blood sugar is going to go up. I noticed a big drop in the amount of insulin I needed after I lost 10% of my body weight. My endocrinologist says there's a big difference when you drop 20% of your body weight too. I know it's hard, but be patient. Your blood sugar will come around.

    Questions Questions

Yes, you feel that way because you don't have any fills in your band. It will change- until then, welcome to bandster hell! The period of time between surgery/after healing and getting to proper restriction with fills. You will have to diet a little, push yourself away from the table, use your willpower to get results. Or you can still eat what you want and go for your fills, get to restriction, then start losing weight- whichever way. Obviously you'll have quicker results if you watch what you eat from the beginning. You should also start some sort of exercise when the doc clears you. Really the goal of the lap band is to eat what you eat now, just much smaller amounts, so you're doing great!! Nicki

    starting to get cold feet

My surgery is Monday as well. I had my pre-admit appointment at the hospital today but I'm not getting cold feet. I am so ready for this to happen. I'm tired of being fat. Tired of having to pay extra money for larger size clothing, shoes and jewelry. Tired of not being able to cross my legs. Tired of not being able to buckle the seat belt on the plane. Tired of hurting when I bend over to tie my shoes. I am tired of the lack of sleep I get due to snoring/sleep apnea. Im tired of being tired. With the upcoming weight loss... I am going to feel better, I am going to exercise, and I'm going to feel good about my self again. Yep... I'm ready for Monday and no cold feet for me. I've had about 10 surgeries in my life and came through all of them with no problems. I don't anticipate having any problems with this one either. I have selected an excellent facility and an excellent surgeon. I got this one.

    Help Me!

Swimming! Swimming is the best all around exercise as far as I am concerned. I swim laps, do Water aerobics, use water weights, work my abs (crunches, etc.), and stretch. Great idea!! I always wanted to learn. Now I just need to find a good/clean pool that isn't too expensive? Any idea where I should check? I've tried YMCAs but it $300 for 2 sessions! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App The YMCA is $300 for two sessions of what? I used to belong to Y and they did have an initiation fee and a monthly membership fee. Group exercise classes were free. They did charge for swimming lessons. Is that what the $300 dollars is for? I know my Y did have financial assistance available if someone was in need. I currently belong to a Wellness Center associated with our local hospital. I have a discounted membership because I got a referral from my PCP. Their group fitness classes are also free. The swimming lessons also have a fee. I'll have to go in and see, I believe it was for two beginner swimming lessons. Thank you! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App That sounds like it would be for a series of classes if it is that much. I know my wellness center charges $18 per half hour for private lessons.

    Help Me!

I've recently started researching on WLS, after many years of losing and gaining weight. I want to get the sleeve. This is my highest weight and after my last time of losing weight I gained back all 60 pounds and probably more (I refuse to step on a scale.) Ive seen so many success stories and so many flat stomachs! I on the other hand am apple shaped and that means most of my weight is in my midsection. Does that mean I will have to go back under the knife to get skin removed? I really wouldn't want to. Do you guys have an suggestion or is it just the inevitable? Thanks in advance!!
