  1. It is normal to have a stall at 3-5 weeks post surgery. I am currently in the middle of said stall. I amd 28 days post surgery. The first few weeks was water weight, these next couple of weeks your body is adjusting to the shock of the surgery and the change in eating habits and amounts. After about week 6 the weight should start coming off again. Here are some additional tips: 1. Check your weight no more than 2x per week. If you need to, put your scale away on "non-weighing days" to ensure that you won't use it. 2. Focus on your HABITS and enjoy the journey. This is not a yo-yo diet. It is not a quick fix. This is your new life. Treat your body with kindness and you'll see what amazing things it will do for you. 3. Remember that weight loss (when graphed) often looks like a staircase rather than a steep slope. Some days you'll lose, others you won't. Don't judge yourself based on those numbers. 4. If you do weigh yourself, make sure that you are also taking note of your measurements. Fat takes up a lot more space than muscle. If you're losing inches and slowly losing pounds, this is often an indication that you are losing fat rather than muscle. If you do notice the dreaded "3 week stall", think of it as a badge of honor, a milestone, and "just a phase". Rather than thinking of your journey being "off course", remind yourself that it is just beginning. Time to enjoy the ride!

Probably should have made myself more clear. The program I’m on does full liquids for two weeks after surgery and then you can start with soft foods - whatever can be tolerated. I have started each day with one protein shake (can’t stand them but get it over with early in the day) and then add soft foods the rest of the day. I’ve been doing this for 12 days now. I was really tired, no energy - it suddenly yesterday I woke up feeling great! Not sure if it’s vitamins (started them at two weeks) or being able to actually eat. I had very little pain after surgery so I feel very lucky. I love drinking water and really pushed myself to be able to tolerate as much as possible after surgery so I feel like my intake is pretty good. I’m sort of at the lowish end of BMI for surgery so I know my weight loss will be slower than many but feeling good about where I am right now.

I'm sorry this is happening. Can you discuss what his concerns are? Is he afraid you won't be able to enjoy going out to eat with him anymore? Or that you will leave him once you are thin? Or that you will have a lot of health problems afterwards? Or something else? It might be something to discuss with a therapist who is well-educated about bariatric surgery. If he is unhappy with your weight and unhappy with your efforts to do something about it, it really puts you in a difficult spot.
  5. My partner and I have been having some issues with my weight and how much I've gained in 8years we have been together. He knows I'm due to have a sleeve but is really against me having it and had even said he can't get his head round me having it and could effect our relationship. I really don't know what to do, I really want this to help me live a better life. Sent from my MAR-LX1A using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. Another idea is to do something non-food related. Do you know how many lbs your friend has lost? Could get crafty with it! Maybe a beaded necklace with 1 bead for every lb lost, and then extra beads in a box for your friend to add to their necklace as they continue to lose weight? I'm sure there are lots of cool things you could make to represent their journey!

All I can eat is 2 bites

You look amazing! Glowing and happy. Your before pic, you look beautiful and happy too. Yes I too worry I'm losing weight to fast. I did this surgery because I had sever back pain and a herniated disc. I never want to be stick thin, and I want to be healthy, so I get your fear. The tightness is the restriction, and don't worry it will get better. Two bites also made me full but now at 8 months in, I can manage eating half a sandwich (it takes time though). So it will get better, just hang in there. Some ppl even miss this period, I am not one of those people.

    Diabetes and DS...

Hi! I had the same concerns preop so I wanted to share my story with you. I have had type II diabetes for 11 years, insulin dependent for 4 years with approximately 6-8 injections per day, and high blood pressure. My surgeon told me that I would be discharged off all insulin/meds and that was a big factor in deciding to get the surgery or not. My PCP however warned me that I may still need insulin and that I may never be off of it completely. It really messed with my head and I almost canceled the surgery. I am 4 weeks post Loop DS surgery and I feel great! The doc discharged me from the hospital on steroids so I continued to take insulin for about 3 weeks post op, but he stopped all oral meds immediately. About a week ago I had my follow up and was told that as long as my blood sugar stays under 160 I can come off the insulin. Amazingly I have not had an insulin dose for 5 days now. As I add foods back into my diet that may or may not change, but I am confident now that I can reach my goal weight and stop feeling trapped by the insulin kit I carried with me everywhere. I have also had to stop my blood pressure meds as they were too strong and I am in normal range. I will say with absolute confidence this is the best thing I have ever done for myself. The biggest struggle I have faced is boredom with the protein shakes, and serious constipation but honestly, small price to pay. I would encourage you to talk to your surgeon and endocrinologist about your concerns because it may not be an immediate fix, and I actually fully expect to possibly need some insulin as I add foods back into my diet. Going forward I am concentrating on low carb high protein meals. I want to encourage you to do as much research as possible, but also let you know that for me, it was the best option to regain control of my health. I wish you luck and if you have any other questions just ask!
  10. My husband is very active, and I was previously very active too, but over the years as I gained weight, I could no longer keep up with him. He and a friend went on a week-long mountain biking trip and while he was away I started plotting my plan to be able to do the trip WITH him the following year. I called a surgeon, and was able to get in for my first class within a day or 2 of my call. When I picked my husband up from his trip, I told him all about my appointment and that I was going to have WLS. He was (and still is!) so supportive and so excited for me! OH yeah...the next year, we went on that mountain biking trip TOGETHER!!! It was during Covid, so we had to modify the route (campgrounds closed), but we did it!!! I looked super cute in my biking outfits too! LOL!!!

Once a year for the rest of forever

I just had surgery on 6/15, I will follow up with my GP with a letter from my surgeon. There are labs to be performed. My BP is already lower from losing pre-op weight and having surgery so I need to see my GP asap. I called the office before I went to vegas for VSG so they know what I am doing.

Just checking in! 12 days post op and I think I'm hitting my first stall. Doing my best to remind myself it happens to everyone and just keep on plan and the scale will start dropping again. Overall down 14lbs since surgery on the 8th. So even if a stall for a week or more, that's still an excellent start The reason I think I'm stalling is cause today is the first day I haven't had a loss. My weight is dead on the same as it was yesterday. It's a bummer cause I almost got down into the 240s (I'm 251.4!), but it will pass! Oh, also.. I did some puree "taco" stuff. I basically threw taco seasoned turkey meat, guacamole, sour cream, and refried beans into a blender. The texture was kinda ick. If any of you do this on your pureed diet, I would instead recommend pureeing only the taco meat, then adding that to the other stuff, since it's already pureed. Texture is a lot more tolerable that way.
  13. Hi guys. I had my surgery on May 18. Until a week ago things were going GREAT. Last Friday I started feeling SUPER full once I started drinking again after a meal. I thought maybe i was slacking and drinking too soon after eating. But it is happening even when I wait a full 30 minutes after eating. I mean sick super full, need to throw up to relieve the discomfort, super full. It doesn't happen all the time, and it seems to be happening mostly after eating tuna salad and any kind of chicken. My 2 main questions are: 1) does anyone have to weight an hour after eating to drink again? And 2) could it be that I wasn't ready for the tuna and the chicken? Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post!

Ditto here! Only told a few people closest to me. I got a couple of comments about losing weight this week when I went back to work and I said that my Dr. put me on a medically supervised weight loss plan and I've also given up wine for a while. Both are technically true... I don't think it will fail, but I also don't need people in my personal business.

I just had my surgery on Tuesday 6/15/2021, started the whole process last July after 6+ years of debating it. I'm currently on a 2 week liquid post op diet (I never wanna see another soup again in my life after 4 weeks of soup!). Post op hasn't been that terrible actually, that was the scariest part for me before doing it. I thought it would be SO painful the way people described it to me, and I thought I would just be miserable. The first 2 days post op were the worst but walk! You won't want to, but that helps SO MUCH with EVERYTHING, gas pains, stomach muscle pain, boredom lol. I have friends and family who have done this and only know 2 who have not gained all of their weight back which was a little discouraging but I refuse to be one of those people who this fails for. I just found this forum yesterday and I'm so glad I did.

    6 Months and Stalled

It was breaking and at tons of different lengths so I had to cut it and some spots are looking super thin! Since Ontario is still locked up, my husband attempted a cut... I had to shave it pretty short to save that. LOL! I am sorry to hear you are in the same boat as me. I am starting to use Diet Doctor's meal planning so hopefully just really watching what I am eating will help. I hear you. To be fair, I stopped right around the same time as we moved and I stopped tracking my intake. I might have bumped my count into maintenance. I am starting to track again this week. I don't feel like I was overdoing it, but I might have surprised myself as I am more careful when I actually see the numbers. Photo below showing off the haircut I had to resort to and a massive change in fit on one of my favourite sweaters from before. First photo was the day I made the top and how long it was, right around my heaviest weight. Second photo was a couple days ago. Lol, I might have shrunk in height cause its a dress now!

Reactive hypoglycemia, anemia, and PS updates

I have definitely had the hungry/not hungry feeling since surgery, so I totally get where you are coming from @Arabesque! 🥰 Anything too greasy has been completely unpalatable. I am very thankful I tolerate protein bars and shakes or I would be in a bad place for getting enough protein. I know I need protein to heal, but meat has not sounded good at all since surgery. We had dinner at some friends’ house last week. They served salmon and flank steak. I only manage a couple bites of the steak and gave the rest to Husband. I managed about 2 ounces of the salmon. 🤷‍♀️ I bought a jar of no stir peanut butter to keep at work to eat with fruit. The fat and protein should help with the reactive hypoglycemia to stabilize my blood sugar from the fruit. 🤞🏻🤞🏻I also have walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dips, cheeses. I already use high protein milk for my protein shakes, so they are protein packed. My goal is to maintain my weight at 130-135. I need to gain a pound 🤣🤣 I plan to start working out as soon as I am healed, which will help with appetite, but conversely burn those extra calories. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷‍♀️ So many skinny girl problems! 🤣😂🤣

    6 Months and Stalled

I am in the same boat, same height and same weight loss, I stopped loosing around 9 months, it has been two years, I have maintained the weight, I still usually eat under 1000 calories and I do not loose, I have 60 more I want to take off. My hair did the same but finally coming back, I had a lot of hair so it looked straggly but didn't look bald, after 2 years it is getting more full.

    No pleasure at eating anymore

there will come a time when you can eat all those things again (as long as your stomach tolerates them), but in much smaller amounts than you could pre-surgery. I had no hunger or interest in eating food for the first five months after surgery. After that, my hunger came back. Honestly, in some ways I wish my hunger HADN'T come back. Although eating was somewhat of a chore those first five months, it was super easy to lose weight because I had no interest in food. Easier than it ever had been in my life... for most people, hunger and interest in food DOES come back. Just give it time. Unfortunately, the return of hunger does make it more challenging to stick to your program, so you'll need to be diligent when it returns.

  21. Snap! I’ve lost about a kilogram (about 2lbs) in the almost 3 weeks post surgery too @WishMeSmaller. Just wrote about it OOTD. Was 49 day of surgery. 51. 5 two days after surgery (fluids) & hover around 47.9 - 48.2 now. It’s because I’m hungry but not hungry & don’t know what I want to eat. (Plus I’ve had diarrhoea from body getting used to not having a gall.) Do you feel the same? I’ve just put it down to getting over having surgery & that it’s temporary. It’s odd how every pound we lose seems to mean so much more when we’re on the lower end of the scale. Three weeks ago my surgeon was happy with my weight. Yesterday, he says I have to put on weight all because of one kg. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Finding that balance in maintenance is hard. I just added more snacks though it’s a challenge when you’re working to keep eating. I snack 4 or 5 x a day on combinations of peanut paste, multigrain crackers, yoghurt, cheese, chia pudding, fruit & protein bar. I also added non diet salad dressing & a little honey to my porridge. Because I detested protein powders & shakes my dietician suggested enriching my milk with powdered milk - extra calories & protein. I found it too sweet with my porridge but it worked well with chia pudding. I had a couple of hypoglycaemic events before my weight finally stabilised. I find I just have to eat regularly & keep my fluids up. I usually carry a protein bar with me. I did have an event a month ago - my fault - standing way too long in a crazy long queue & needed food & water. Hopefully you’ll work out what you need to manage yours or it sorts itself out when your weight stabilises too. Love the bikini pxts. You look so good.

    What was your tipping point?

My tipping point was March of this year, about two weeks after I had my gall bladder surgery. I was sitting on the couch, bored out of my brain because I had a 5lb weight restriction and I couldn’t do anything I wanted to do. I realized that if I didn’t do something, this was going to be my life in the future. I didn’t want that, so I looked up the local clinic and away I went. Surgery scheduled for July 13 now and I’m getting all my ducks in a row. Trying to finish my house remodel before the date—extreme nesting, you might call it.

How much weight training is enough

I've been bodybuilding on and off for 23 years and I can assure you that resistance exercise + Low intensity cardio + the ideal amount of protein intake (as part of a balanced Macro combination) will definitely help you keep the fat off in the long-run. Notice here that I used the word 'fat' and not 'weight' (weight includes fat & muscle). If you manage to gain a few pounds on the scale while making sure your calorie and macros consumption are in check, then it is most probably an increase in muscle mass, not fat mass. How can you know for sure? Make sure you measure your body composition (Fat %, Fat weight, Lean Muscle weight etc) before you start carrying weights. Then measure again at the end of the month. Then compare. You'll be surprised sometimes to see that the weight scale hardly moves as your muscle mass replaces fat mass. Aesthetically though, you'll look much better when muscle gets packed on (as long as you dont gain fat 🙏). I advise to google ' Body Recomposition' if you want to accomplish any of the following goals/scenarios: Building muscle while simultaneously losing fat Building muscle while maintaining body fat mass Losing fat while maintaining muscle mass And the best literature I've read on Body Recomposition is by Jeff Nippard. He'll set you straight and make you an expert in no time. Oh yeah and carrying weights 3 times a day , on alternate days for 8 weeks is an excellent starting program. Good luck Jaye
  24. Hi y’all! I’m Brittany. I’m a stay at home wife and mom of two littles. I suffer from hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s, PCOS and a benign pituitary tumor, all of which affect my weight and overall quality of life. I have wanted to have gastric surgery for upwards of 11 years, but the timing was never right. After several failed attempts at losing weight, I finally decided it was time to get serious about surgery. I joined a couple of bariatric pages on Facebook, and just sat back and watched for several months. I initially reached out to a surgeon here in San Antonio, but after learning that my insurance wouldn’t cover the surgery and realizing the cost of the procedure out of pocket, I became very discouraged. However, I had read many testimonials of people who went to Mexico to have their surgery performed. I kept hearing of one place in particular, Oasis of Hope in Tijuana. After doing loads of research, I decided to reach out to them. Within a couple of weeks, I had my surgery date for June 1st! I began my pre-op diet 30 days before surgery. The LSD was a total of 25 days, and the clear liquids phase was a total of 5. The liquid phase is NO JOKE. That ish is ROUGH. 😆 I’m now 17 days post-op and have lost a total of 31 pounds! It’s a struggle to get my protein and liquids in, as I still haven’t learned the tricks to making sure what I’m eating doesn’t cause discomfort. I am quite fatigued, and am considering going to have IV therapy to get me over this hump. However, I’m still so happy with my decision, and I am so excited to see what the future holds!

This was my highest weight of 295. I’m now sitting at 257, almost 40 pounds down.
