Dear god...WHY AM I THIS WAY? CARBS!

I am 27 months post-op from RNY gastric bypass surgery. There are two stages to RNY. They are the Weight Loss phase and the Maintenance phase. The goals and meal plan in my humble opinion are different between these two stages. At 5 months post-op you are still in the Weight Loss phase and the weight loss will level out soon and you will slide into the Maintenance phase. In the Maintenance phase the goal is to maintain the weight loss that you achieved in the first phase. After surgery, the part of your stomach that processes fats and sugars were cut away. Therefore the meal plan excluded fats and sugars which would lead to rapid dumping syndrome. But somewhere around the 6-12 month post-op mark your body will change. The intestines will develop the ability to absorb fats and sugars in place of the stomach. This change is actually an opportunity. It give you the ability to reintroduce fats back into your diet. I am 27 months post-op and my weight is towards the lower end of the scales. I entered the maintenance phase 20 months ago and have done very well by not adding any pounds back on. (I have actually lost 15 pounds in the Maintenance phase.) For my meals, I concentrate on high Protein meals. I avoid processed sugars. I use only artificial sweeteners (Splenda, sugar alcohol), low calorie natural sweeteners (Stevia) and natural sugars found in milk and fruit. The other types of sweeteners I avoid like the plague. I read nutritional labels. After surgery I completely lost my hunger. Without hunger constantly gnawing at my bones, it was easy to lose weight. So from my opinion the key to succeeding in the Maintenance phase is to control hunger. Fats take away my hunger, so I reintroduced fats back into my diet and at 27 months post op, hunger still does not rule my life. I use whole milk, real butter and normal cuts of meat. When I snack, I snack on fats. I have one or two cups of coffee each day. On the coffee I put a heaping spoon of whip cream. This whip cream is home made and uses Splenda in place of sugar. During the day for Snacks I consume 2 or 3 Adkin's treats. These use sugar alcohol as the sweetener and contain fat that controls hunger. I have a sweet tooth and these satisfy this need. I limit my meals to one meal per day with complex carbs (bread, pasta).

Friday day of pre op diet. Already bummed

It really does get easier after a couple of days. I am on it too right now. Things I forgot (I had to do this I 2007 when I was banded) is 1. Headaches!!! I don't know if it's the low cal or low sugar but I got headaches every night for a few days 2. Mood swings from being hangry! It dulls down more each day. 3. I hate the taste of fake sweeteners so instead of sf Jello or popsicles I would rather just drink broth till my eyes explode - but realized yesterday, my body made that swap where the fake sweetener stuff tastes like normal sugar. Wahoo broke the sugar itch. Hang in there and keep your eye on the prize. This is temporary. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. OK, so here's the question... I keep reading about all the gas they pump us full of during the surgery. Now... that gas has got to come out somehow. I'm going to be flying home 3 days post op. Trapped in a seat, probably surrounded by others for 3 hours. How embarrassing is this trip going to be? Is it gonna be noisy, foul smelling, or both? Just wondering if I need to put a bag over my head when I board the plane. Will Gas-X work? Should I sip water during the flight? I just want to know what I can expect. Thanks

    Gas.... and flying

Hit the send button too soon. It was weeks before the gas made any noise. I was used to just releasing it without noise or smell. THEN I took my 10 yo grandchild out or her birthday. Felt some pressure and let it go. Wouldn't you know, this time it had noise and lots of it. Everyone in the restaurant turned to me and of course my grandchild was in tears laughing!
  5. Hi there- I was dead-tired EXHAUSTED for about 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. Some people spring out of surgery and have tons of energy - I was not one of them. After the 2 month mark I felt about 75% to 80%. Today I can say that my energy is back, but I haven't done much in the way of exercise and I get winded and muscle fatigue if I push too hard. The first couple of weeks are physically and mentally exhausting - don't push yourself too hard. You'll find that the food anxiety is not so bad after about 2 months because you can eat whatever you want, just in small quantities. You will also have a better understanding of which foods you like (your tastebuds will change) and this will make you more comfortable. Hang in there - you're doing great!
  6. Thanks for all of your responses. I think I am too hard on myself sometimes. I definitely want to do as much as I can while I am off work to figure out as much as I can but I will only be in purees when I go back. My boss seems like he is willing to be flexible when I get back so I can leave early or come in late once I come back. I'm taking off a month (June 20th is my first day back) so I am going to try not to do that unless I absolutely need it. In my head and logically, I knew I needed as much time as I could get to get used to eating and get my strength back. Knowing it logically and really feeling that I am more tired than usual is another story. I think I'm superwoman sometimes. I am grateful to my work for giving me the time I need (albeit on disability) but it is weird not being there. I think they are also really getting an idea of what my job is like now from speaking to one of my friends there. Oh well, now is the time for me so I need to do what I can to set myself up for success now. I would love any advice from any of you on what you have learned! 7. Bloo WOW, that is quite a while on liquids. I was on liquids for 2 weeks and then was allowed mushies, but I kept mostly with liquids for the next 2 weeks. Trying to jump start my losing...LOL This isnt counting the nearly all liquids I did for a month pre-op though. Hope the time goes by quick for ya...Dave
  8. Hi Everybody! I live in the Northern suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I had my surgery on 6-23-11 by Dr. Jeffrey Baker at Unity Hospital. He works out of Baker Bariatrics. He is a very skilled surgeon who has done many procedures and is really nice too! I highly recommend him. Plus my insurance covered him so that was a bonus! I am 6 weeks out and have lost 20 pounds so far (i had lost 20 before the surgery) so am down 40 pounds so far. Started at 243- at 203 this week. I had a 'mini stall' at week 4, but only lasted about 10 days. Now moving down again. Overall, I have had no complications or problems that weren't expected. I have not had any nausea or vomiting since the surgery. My incisions healed well (can hardly see them now). I consider myself very lucky!! I am 47, married, no kids except for my 9 year old Beagle, Brewster. Tonight I start in a beginning running class training for a 5K race in October. I have already been thru my closet and was able to give 2 big bags to the Lupus Foundation- I have lost 2 sizes already!

    Menu for the pre-op diet?

What the Dr gave me was 3 slim fast shakes a day, chicken broth or beef, jell-o and popcicles ( suger free) any way I want to have them as long as I eat , well drink them.Every person on here is different on there pre-opt diet so just follow what your Dr gives you or talk to them and ask them if there is anything that you can do to mix it up so you don't get to off track and bord with it. Sorry I couldn't help much. Good luck! Kristy

    Day 3 post op

Hello again! Today is day 3 post op. Pain is hardly nothing. I describe it as too many situps. I havent been using my pain meds except at night, and that is just to sleep. I feel good. I am still struggling to accept that I actually have had the surgery. When I think about it, i get knots in my stomach. I have read several other posts that state the same thing, so that must be "normal". Each day gets a bit easier. Went to my sons soccer tourney today and I'm going back to work tomorrow!!

    Vitamin deficiency?

Hi everyone, I am 3 years out and stopped taking my supplements due to feeling nauseous the last time I had taken them. Lately I have such severe dry chapped swollen lips ever. Haven't been able to heal them for over a month. SO now I'm taking my multi and vit B complex hoping that this will help. Have anyone experienced this? I know that I have had a lot of increased anxiety too.
  12. It happens to all of use at some point. My stall was 5 months post op, I did not lose for 3 months !!!! I was freaking but then I increased my exercise from walking to running, also started working out 1 hr. instead of 45 minutes and that got me out of my slump. ALSO...... I went down a size in that period so thing were happening just not in the scale department. I just needed to work harder at exercising. You will be OK...stay on your plan, stay focused and all of a sudden you will drop again.
  13. Okay. Starting to get worried about finding a Protein Drink I can handle. Thought the Isopure Protein Water was going to be the solution, but I tried it today (grape) and it's not going to happen. I'm getting sleeved in Mexico next week so want to be all set before then. Any recommendations? Also, should I be concerned with constipation while on the liquid diet? I've used Miralax successfully in the past, so will plan to do that again if necessary. Please help w/protein problem (what worked for you, where did you get it)!!! Thanks, Karen

    Questions about post op pain

@@kimpossible67 I've had c-sections (3) and I asked that same question and got all the "oh it's not near as bad" well I can tell you the First moments directly after waking up were worse! For about 15min..the two days in the hospital I was on morphine but still had some pain (not too bad) first 2 days at home worse! I am not a medication taking person but after day two at home I called my surgeon and told Them the pain pills were pretty much worthless...they gave me another prescription for a much stronger pain pill and I was good after that. I think a lot of my issues also came from having a JP drain and staples. Now , after a week all the pain was pretty much gone. I was lucky not to have any gas ect...so I try not to complain, for me it was not "painless"'and I don't know why I ever thought it would be?! It's surgery! Glad it's over and glad I did it????
  16. I'm having my surgery with Michel Gagner in a few weeks. Have you moves forward with you surgery?

9 Days Post op and plateau'n already!

I'm gonna try my normal walk today. I use to walk an hour before surgery but to be honest I don't think my intake of 550 calories now will give me enough energy to sustain the walk ~Leticia **HW: 259**PreOp: 216**SURG: 3/21/13 **Discharged @: 221**9 days post op: Down 20 lbs**
  18. Have my 6 week follow up tomorrow and first fill. I've lost 29lbs but feel no restriction so I'm confident they will give me a fill. I'm nervous but excited at the same time! Hope everyone is well!
  19. I had surgery on November 27, 2012. My beginning weight was 193, I am now 172. My scale has not budged from 172 in the past past 7-10 days. I exercise every day, consisting of 20-25 mins on the eliptical, and a few days a week I will throw in an extra 10-15 mins. I know my scale is accurate because it is weighing my kids correctly. I don't understand why I haven't lost anything this past week. I do not count my calories, should I start counting?

    Liquid question

I'm 1 week post-op and I can drink 4 oz. in about an hour. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. Hi Lucygirl, I thought you had Dr Oh.... Your post op diet sounds better than mine, it's 4 weeks of Clear Liquids w/3 Protein drinks a day..... It's so wierd how it changes from doctor to doctor. I hope you back feels better. I can't imagine - my back is aching too but I don't have a back injury. Sorry about your job, so rude to call and do that! Especially after surgery! Maybe it will be a blessing, something better will happen for you :target: Are you on Medical leave or anything? I bet you could get some work with a temp agency and they would do a phone interview. I hope you feel better and try not to let all the stress delay your healing Hugs!!
  23. Sounds like you were off to a pretty good start..I didn't do anything but liquids for the first two weeks after surgery....the broth just tasted bad to me, so I pretty much did little sips of water for the first couple of days...and then I started little sips of broth, but after about 3 days I started drinking slim fast...4 oz's at a time....did this for 2 weeks...
  24. The pre-surgery panic is perfectly normal. HOWEVER, you are right in taking a step back if and postponing it for a week or two if you are seriously having doubts. Make no mistake that this is a life-altering decision. With that said, I've been banded a month and now over the roughest part (I hope!). I have been eating the same 6 or 7 soft/liquid foods for a month or more and am so ready to move to solids. For the most part I know now that I will be perfectly content to eat small portions of whatever I choose. Yes, I'll miss bread and starches...but I've given them up before and know that they are truly addictive substances. I NEED to give them up!! This tool helps keep me in line and I love it! As for the sodas, I am also grateful that I am simply not allowed to have them. I have enjoyed trying new things and all the different crystal light flavors, etc. Right now my absolute fave is berry Propel with fresh squeezed lemon...I drink it all day, every day, and easily get my 64 oz in. The major added bonus is that I'm also withdrawing from all that caffeine which is helping to also control my hunger!!! It really has been a great experience so far. I am very excited about the future. Oh, and by the way, today I hit ONE-DERLAND!

    At A Stand still

Our bodies are pretty efficient pieces of machinery. Drop your calories too far and at some point your body will react by lowering your metabolism because it thinks you're starving and is becoming more efficient at conserving those calories. Obviously we're all different so there will be exceptions but perhaps this is what's happening to you. In the past when I'd do a low calorie diet. I'd do low cal/low fat for 3-4 days and then 2 days of normal (per normal people, not 'my' normal) eating and then back to the low cal/low fat. I'd shed more weight with that method than just a straight low cal/low fat diet. I wouldn't worry about it though. The weight will come off eventually. I've only lost 10 pounds in the 6 weeks since surgery and most of that has been since I started back on solid foods. .
