    Pre Op requirements

Update : I called the pulmonologist that I had the set June appointment with, explained the situation, I now have an appointment March 31 ! Receptionist said it was no problem. The bariactric nurse simple asked for an appointment and must not have looked at my file to see that all other requirements will be met by March 8th. (Ya know, the little details). This now gives me a 3 month allowance for insurance clearance before my deductible rolls over. So glad I didn’t just sit back and accept the appointment situation. Saved myself time and thousands of dollars. Thanks for all the support !!!!!

Surgery on 2/25 - Liquid Diet on 2/20

Exciting that your surgery is coming up. Still waiting on preop testing for me Lol. you are lucky that you may not have to do the liquid pre op diet... I have seen on here people have to do it up to 3 weeks or more. As for pain i personally stocked up on Vicodin pills and marijuana lol. idk what kind of pain meds they will give me once i am done with surgery so i wanna be prepared. I dont do pain well lol

Anybody recently post op and healing?

I am two weeks post op, and I also experienced a lot of pain. I was kept in the hospital an additional day because it raised my blood pressure 158/96. I can promise you that it does get better. I know it is very isolating feeling, but if you cant bring yourself to go outside, just walk a lap or two around the inside of your house, some of the pain you are feeling might be gas related, and the walking will really help get it out. I can tell you, it is going to get better and easier

I’m one week post op and feeling good. I’m shocked I feel so well. A little sore but I love the scale. Started my pre op diet at 261. I’m now 236. No more back pains.

    Surgeon vs Nutritionist

I'm not sure how your program works, but the people I deal with regularly are the nutritionist and the PAs, more than the surgeon (I am now 6 months out). Unless something goes wrong, I'm not really going to see her anymore or often. If I need advice on stalls, plateaus, whatever, the nutrition team deals with it. Surgeons are surgeons - they are really great at doing surgery. And while they are a doctor, just because they have a medical degree doesn't mean they are an expert in everything, including the nitty gritty details of nutrition. As long as you are dealing with a credentialed nutritionist (more on this in a min) who is experienced in working with bariatric patients, I would probably listen to them. Now, I did learn from my own nutrition team that not everyone who claims to be a nutritionist is really qualified or licensed (it depends on your state) so just something to be mindful of. Also, I think we all need to bring some common sense to the table even after surgery. Meaning, we shouldn't leave our common sense at the door just because we are talking to a surgeon/doctor/nutritionist/whatever. If something sounds off, we should ask questions. And, if needed, I wouldn't hesitate to (nicely) say to the nutrition team, "hey, your advice isn't aligning with what Dr. X said. Can we talk through it because now I am concerned." It alerts them to a problem, and they may be able to help "translate" what the doctor may have been trying to say. My guess is that it wouldn't be the first time they hear it.

    Pre Op requirements

I would try a different pulmonologist. I had the same issue but with the gastroenterologist and scheduling my endoscopy. The first dr I went to couldn’t get my endoscopy scheduled before March 25. I found another dr on my own who could do it sooner and was able to have my endoscopy done last week. Now when I see my surgeon tomorrow, all my requirements are done and we can hopefully schedule the date.
  7. Yes to all that! I would also add that I have the Renpho scale and SMART measuring tape. There are bunch of different SMART tools out there, so you don't have to get that one, but I absolutely agree with starting the documentation now. If/When you get down, you can look back at all the progress you made. It's really inspiring! I also joined here 6 months before my surgery and I think that was one of the reasons I've been successful. I felt really prepared for anything that might happen after surgery so when I had gas, felt pain, stalled, etc... I knew what to do. Good luck!!
  8. I set the timer on my Apple watch and took sips every 3 min. I would do that for about 30 min and then I'd come back in 30 and do it again. It's a PITA right at first, but staying hydrated is critical in those first few weeks. Once you can have more than a sip at time, you can back that off. Even almost a year later, if I feel like I'm not drinking enough, I'll set my watch and have like 2-3 swallows every 3 minutes while I'm sitting at my desk.
  9. Honestly, other than the vitamin regimen being slightly different, it's pretty much the same. I went in asking about the sleeve but my doctor suggested the bypass. As I asked questions - now that it's done laparoscopically, there's not a ton of difference in the recovery. I think the vitamins are probably the biggest difference and your doctor should be able to give you that info. I love my bypass. My surgery was 3/3/2021 so I'm almost a year out and down 139lbs. In fact, tomorrow a year ago is when I started my pre-op diet. It is mentally challenging though when you're all prepped for one thing but then it gets changed to something else. You've got time to do some more research:)

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

This is so true. My surgery date is 3/2/22 and it has been a long journey getting here. I have all of these feelings as our weight loss may change relationships. I have been in much prayer that all will go well. Be blessed.

    Post surgery weight gain

I was "fortunate" that I was too large to fit on a home scale (or most doctors scales) so I could only weigh at my Doc's office at follow-ups. As a result I didn't see any stalls or phantom weight gains, so the scale never messed with me, so I was never tempted to "change things up" to get the scale moving. I just stayed on plan. Eventually, when I could weigh at home, I did it for a couple weeks until the novelty wore off, then I went back to only weighing at follow-ups then only annual physicals. You don't necessarily need a scale for success. My weight ruled my life for so long that I resolved after surgery I would stay on plan and let my weight take care of itself. Good luck, Tek

    Maintaining Post Op Diet

I finally got to my water intake at about 9 weeks out. I am still struggling to eat enough to get to my protein total, I am about 45 -50grams a day. I have give up worrying about it. I will get there soon In the beginning eating took all my time and drinking was a real pain to fit in but as things mend and begin working it gets better. Good luck

    B12 advice

Hi Peonie We must be on the same UK recovery timeline. I had my first shot of B12 today and am scheduled for one every 3 months. I trust the NHS, they will check our blood tests and if it comes to that we dont need it anymore then they will stop it. Ask your surgeon to ring the GP Surgery and sort it out for you

Stall or just a slow loser?

almost all of us have our first stall sometime during the first 4-6 weeks after surgery. It's USUALLY the third week, but not always. Mine was weeks 2 & 3. Scale didn't budge. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale. Maybe just weigh yourself once a week until the stall breaks And as long as you stick to your program, it WILL break, and you'll be on your way again. oh - just wanted to add that I agree with one of the above people who said that this might not even be a stall if it's only been three days. But if it goes on longer, then yes, it probably is - and it's not uncommon at all!
  17. Good morning, in pre-op. Made it through the 2 weeks of clear liquids. Went from 270 to 255 during the time. Look forward to getting my pre-weight before weight loss become a problem. So glad to be part of this group. I know I’m not alone. May God bless us all.
  18. Hello everyone! So I’m scheduled for sleeve surgery 2/24 and I’m wanting to make sure I’m prepared for the “full liquid stage”. I was told day 3-14 I need to be on full liquids like broth, cream based Soups, etc. however I want to know how did you guys manage protein/fluid intake? I was advised to get about 48-64 oz of Water in and at least 60g of Protein daily. They said it was okay if I didn’t meet that goal right after but I do want to do as best as I can to try to. Any suggestions? I feel like I’m going to be sipping all day and all night to meet this goal in the beginning stages lol. It is crazy because I have a family member who had this surgery and didn’t follow nearly any of the rules as far as meeting goals, dieting etc unfortunately so I cannot ask her questions like this. Thanks in advance guys!

    Surgeon vs Nutritionist

Do the best you can in between the two people. You cant please both people. The dietician will be less than pleased to be so put down by such a high and mighty surgeon. I bought myself a bariatric plate to remind myself of portion sizes. I cant even eat the meat portion yet never mind the veg and carbs. So I have 3 meals and 2 snacks, 1 is yogurt and 1 is home made veg soup made with milk. Just so I keep my gut moving. Just do your best. Let him sound off and condemn when you jokingly say you ate nothing but take out.

Stall or just a slow loser?

Yes as Hop scotch and Grady Cat have said Weigh once a week at the most. You will loose no matter what and looking at the scales and wanting to watch the fat disappear doesn't work. It only leads to annoyance and stress. In the little time you have had you have done amazing. Others will do better than you and some will loose slower. Its your journey, so have a little patience and time to get to the end

    Surgeon vs Nutritionist

He said no soft foods cause they are easy to eat. he wants me to eat harder foods. He said to listen to him because nutritionist weren’t doctors. He said a shake in the morning and then 3 meals. The nutritionist said 3 meals and 2 snacks throughout the day because I was getting hungry. My doctor said you won’t starve. He also said are you really hungry. I told him yes, it’s the empty, growing hard hunger. He said get used to it. He actually made me kinda mad. My husband also as he was there. He made me think again why did I do this. Thank you for your response. I do like the tablespoon idea instead of just the spoon.

    Post surgery weight gain

Try not to look at the scale for at least a month. You just had a major operation. You were filled with fluids, air, you likely haven't had a bowel movement yet. It's going to be all over the place for a couple of weeks. Hide your scale.

    Gastric Bypass complete!

It is amazing what we've gone through, isn't it? You'll likely be all good in a couple of days without need for pain meds and no more spitting up. Remember, they had a tube down your throat and you're healing from a major surgery/trauma. You'll be tired for the first week, so you'll sleep really well. Enjoy it. You'll also still be passing excess gas from them inflating your stomach for surgery, so that'll be a couple more days and that might be causing some of the pain.

Stall or just a slow loser?

It's very early days, your body is still in recovery, weight is going to be all over the place. It's only been three days since you've lost some scale weight, you are not going to lose weight every single day and three days doesn't make a stall. Give yourself a break from the scales, don't weigh yourself for another few weeks.
  25. Hi guys had my surgery 02/02, start weight was 21.9. I got down to 20.9 before my op on the LRD. first week weigh in after surgery was a loss of 8 pounds and this morning week 2 I’ve lost 3.5 pounds. However I got on the scale Sunday and it showed a 3.5 pound loss then, so in 3 days the scale hasn’t moved and I’m still on liquids? what do we reckon, I’m going to be a slow loser? Or I’ve hit the dreaded 3 week stall early? thankyou.
