    Hard, But It's Working!

Starting Day 6 of liquid diet. It's not easy; but I've been fairly active and not cheating, so that 800 calorie limit is making the weight fall off. I've lost almost 10 pounds since Monday! Seeing those results makes it a little easier. I can remember losing a few pound in past and then justifying something I shouldn't eat and undoing most of my hard work. I pray I never again adopt that mindset.

    First Timer Here

nope, it's not the easy way out. But it DOES work. And yes, there's always the chance that you will be among the 1% who has complications but heck, that's still pretty good odds. Have you tried diet & exercise to lose weight. That's a pretty stupid question, because I know you have. I dieted myself right up to 360, 3 knee replacements (1 went bad on me), a foot rebuild, high blood pressure, and right on the verge of diabetes. And all of that happened within the last 10 yrs (I'm 56). It's amazes me how quickly I started falling apart when I got past 45. Is that what your family wants you to suffer through ? I doubt it. I had the VSG in February and I am losing weight. I eventually will have to try the river tubing too -Sheila

Ok so today I made my Husband take the scale out of the bathroom and hide it from me....I was driving myself completely crazy...I would get on the dang thing everytime I walked by it...I mean I'm not sure what I was expecting to see everytime I got on it...I mean it's not like I was gonna drop 10 pounds every 10 minutes lol but apparently that's what I was looking for...But it's gone now and I only want to see it maybe once every 2 weeks....hopefully this will lighten the stress and craziness in my head!!!

    Lapbanding vrs Gastric Bypass

It appears that for most of us here at LapbandTalk. Gastric bypass was too radical and irreversible. No Malnutrition with excellent weight loss results. Since I have been doing my research, I have ran across a number of posts from people who had some form of bypass and followed up with a lapband. It ain't magic. It's a tool. You can succeed or fail on either course but for me, the thought of permanently altering my ability to absorb nutrients via gastric bypass, the longer recovery time, the higher death rate, and the fact you can stretch your remodeled stomach out again turned me against the bypass. Actually, I never considered the bypass since I have only the same 80 or so pounds to lose for the umpteenth time and the bypass scared the crap out of me. The lapband seems like a walk in the park. I am a newbie but have read just about everything I could get my hands on re:Lapband and to me it represented hope withot the giant risk of bypass. I am only sorry I didn't hear about it earlier in my life. I like to move forward fast and was just banded on 10/22/05. Was off work only 1 day and feel terrific. Little itchy on the port site but everything else is healed. dd

Since when is losing 10# a month slow? Men and very young women lose faster, but for most of us that is a good rate.

    Vertical sleeve is done! Yayyyy!

Hello all. I had my sleeve done on 10-17. I am doing ok just very gassy and thirsty. Is that normal? I have not been hungry yet which is surprising to me. I am unable to drink water the way I used too .
  9. Lucabelle, my stall lasted 10 weeks....altho the scale didn't move, my clothes were fitting looser so I know I was losing inches. I was 6 months postop when that stall happened:( Hang in there...you're only 3 weeks out!

    Tummy Bug:(

I was sick for about 10 days. I did end up in the ER due to dehydration. I had zero strength and at the worst point needed help getting out of bed. It was pretty scary. There were several days I was on the toilet literally 20 times. The docs figured it was food poisoning in my case as no one else in the house got sick.
  11. My surgeon never questioned me about which surgery to have. He is thrilled with my 60% BMI gone in one year. Do what you feel is right for you not what the doctor wants you to have, Your body, not his/hers. A band can be removed, sleeve-stomach gone forever and by-pass, almost everyone I know has regained after 10 years and blame it on the surgery not their over eating. Also, you need to be comfortable with the doctor you choose.

Doctors Discussing Weight Loss With Patients

They're not saying that doctors shouldn't tell you you're overweight and they need to lose weight. They're saying that telling you you need to lose weight without giving you the proper tools on how to do anything about it is a negative. If I tell you to go cook a fancy dinner but don't tell you where to buy the ingredients for what recipe do you use you're just going to get frustrated and upset. The request and advice to lose weight it should be accompanied by solid information, or a specific treatment plan so that the patient doesn't feel discouraged. Weight loss is hard if you don't have the tools or the knowledge to do it. HW 385 SW 359 Sleeved 10/5/16

    Feeling sad

I remember one time when I was probably around 10 my family was swimming at the lake near our house when a group of neighbor ladies showed up to swim. I said something to my mom along the lines of...you must have been embarrassed to get out of the lake in front of them. I don't think my mom ever went swimming in public again. She wasn't even that overweight, just a bit chunky. At the time, I know I had no intention to hurt her feelings, I just made a stupid observation and to this day, 20+ years later I still feel truly horrible that I would have said something so insensitive. Your daughter is only 6 and I'm sure she has absolutely no idea how hurtful her comment was. You are taking steps to improve your health (I'm at goal weight and I HATE jumping rope, so good for you for doing that) and your daughter will eventually see that you did what needed to be done to be healthy. With any luck she will have no memory of her insensitive comment and when she is 31 like me she won't look back and think...omg, how could I have ever been so cruel without even realizing it!
  14. I had an initial surgery consult and got my blood work done that day. Came back a week later for my NUT appointment and Psych eval. Two days later I came back for my Exercise Physiology appt. a couple weeks later and had an Endoscopy and a final consult "refresher". The following week I started my 10 day pre op diet, which included 3 shakes and 1 under 300 calorie meal per day. Then surgery. Start to finish was less than 6 weeks. An Update On Me

K so I was sleeved on 9/19 and had actually gained a little weight prior to surgery and started at 262. Yes I know probably not a good idea to gain weight before surgery but I wanted to make sure I ate stuff I knew i would not be able to eat for a while:) anyways I ended up with some complications first with an infection in my drain tract, then an issue with " white foamy vomit" as my surgeon calls it, and dehydration. I have been back to the hospital 3 times since surgery because of dehydration alone. I was also not able to eat any puréed foods. I was put on a puréed diet once I left the hospital. It ended up getting to the point to where I could not drink anything without throwing up. And for whatever reason I felt better ..out of the blue. No more nausea no pain nothing. I have been able to eat only a very tiny amount but at least I am able to get some foods in and my fluid intake has improved. I am not anywhere near where I need to be but it has improved so much. I am hoping it gets better everyday from now. I am supposed to be moved to soft foods starting 10/15 so hopefully I will be able to tolerate it. My weight loss so far has amazed me but I am also sure part of it has to do with the fact that I have not had any foods and hardly any fluids but I went from 262 to 230 as of this morning. That is 32 lbs in2 weeks and 4 days. Just feeling better and wanted everyone to know
  16. explor lap gave me hosp aquired pneumonia, pleural effusins, had abcess over spleen with fistula to liver with a smaller abcess, chest tube, drains, fevers, on TPN which gives massive diarrhea, a crappy picc line that wad psoitional to say the least, 6 visits to interventional radiology, 7 cts with contrast, movement disorder for 7 hours from iv promethazine ( constant nausea) nothing helped) i retched all the time.too much lovenox gave huge bloody noses,, lost count on xrays, 5 antibiotics at once, pca with dilaudid which i refused about 10 days prior to discharge. i do not remember the first 2 weeks or so. i do remember admission, some great nurses and staff. my family is amazing. my mom stayed overnite a lot with me. i sobbed everyday i am told plus, no oral liquids or ice for 3weeks! ugh!!!!!!!on a happier note, i am weaning off my jpeg, trying food that i have to chew(no sliding food) and everyday improving. i stagger my chores and errands. too much one day puts me in bed the next day. doctors say i have the worst luck cuz what could go wrong ------did. but again, no clear proof of a leak. it is assumed due to my symptoms.weight is coming off slower than i thought it would. TPN and my tube feedings are so calorically dense but i am down 30 with about 35 to go. i will get there!!!!! as a nurse, being a patient reminded me of why i went into nursing in the first place. i feel very lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jpeg might be removed end of december!!!
  17. I'm trying to get everything together for the predetermination for my insurance (BCBS Federal) and I feel like I'm trying to walk up a wall. My BMI is 41.6 with no comorbidities, I just moved to a new college and have found myself more active because it is larger (classes and food are a half mile away from my house instead of a block away) while this is a great thing, in terms of losing weight, I can't help but feel like it is the worst thing ever. I know that this surgery is the best option for me because for the past 5 years I have been bouncing from 230-260 lbs. and while I have no comorbidities now, I feel like there is a time bomb strapped to my back. If I continue to fluctuate and never get to a healthier state I will eventually develop one or more comorbidities. My PCP tested me for diabetes last month as a precaution and I was shocked to find out that I don't have it because my weight has been an issue that has been progressing for almost 10 years now. I keep second guessing myself right now. What if I just haven't done enough and now that I have better resources around me I could lose the weight with out surgery? At the same time I know that this goes much deeper than just losing weight or exercising more, I've become so used to shoveling massive amounts of food down my throat that I look at a recommended portion and see it more as a snack or appetizer. I need something to not just help with the weight issues but a way to retrain myself on how to eat as a way to nourish my body, instead of continuing my unhealthy habits. I'm worried that with all the changes in my life right now I'll lose enough weight that I'll be denied by my insurance and be back on that yo-yo cycle of bouncing from 230-260. My window of opportunity for this surgery is small, because I'm only on this insurance plan for another 10 months. I'm hoping someone has been in a similar situation of feeling like they have to maintain their weight just to have a chance to be healthy in the long run and can give some advice on how to deal with this. I find myself getting excited because my pants aren't as loose as they were my first 3 weeks at this college (I lost about 8-10 lbs. during the moving process and my first few weeks here because of the larger campus, stress, and a few other things) I haven't gained past what I was at the dr. consult in December, so I'm basically just maintaining the weight at this point. And I can't help but feel that it is a little twisted that I'm excited because I gained back some weight so that I can qualify for a surgery that will help me lose weight. Maybe I'm just not looking at this in the best light? Thanks for reading and any advice is appreciated Also, thanks for giving me a place to reach out to people who could possible understand. I've talked to a few close friends and they think it's a bit odd, because they all cheer for weight loss, not gain
  18. I'm a June 10th too! I've lost 30 lbs total so far (10 from pre-op and 20 post-op). I am getting close to getting in the liquids each day, but am no where near the amount of Protein I need. I just bought the New whey Protein Bullets in grape and I hope that will help. I am so sick of shakes! I'm not allowed to start purees until next Monday but I cannot wait. I have been to family social gatherings involving some really good food and it has been tough, but I've realized as I eat my Soup that I'm not really hungry, it's just in my head. I meet with my NUT for the first time this Friday so hopefully I will get some more advice and info then. I'm also going to a support group at my hospital next month so I'm fingers crossed that this is all worth it!

    Late to the Party

Well I had my sleeve done at 10 this morning. Hating the catheter that they put in me and my semi-deaf roommate that is in for another surgery and won't stop talking about food. Other than that, it feels like I have done a million sit-ups and my mouth is so dry it's like a desert.

    Slip...too Tight...or Just Right?

I was banded 8/6/12, and it is a month now. I struggled at first with snacking, but healthy snacks, no carbs just greek yogurt, or cottage cheese, etc only protein. I got the carbs from the yogurt and cottage cheese. I was not losing weight for about 10 day, and when I did a follow up with my doctor i realize they meant no snacking between meal but I was so busy trying to get in carbs and protein, that i was eating too many calories. I have nothing in my band until hopefully the 19th of September. I am now eating 1 cup of food each meal, and i am losing weight. I am not eating between meals which allows me to get in my 64oz of fluid, ex: water, tea, etc and i am not hungry. My dr. said to only focus on the protein and fiber, not the carbs and fat but be mindful to make low calories, low fat choices, not pizza or canned processed foods. She explained to me that i will not feel full after my 6-8 ounces of food, but wait the 20 minutes and let your brain process the food and i should not be hungry for at least 4 hours. I could eat more, but i don't, i wait and i find that i am not hungry. I would not beleive if it didn't happen to me. She explained that it is very important to have the 4 hours window of not eating, because what i don't take in with carbs and fat by not eating between meals your body will use your body fat to get the carbs, fat etc and burn the fat and you lose weight. If you do eat between meals, your body does not need to burn the fat because you are feeding it more food between meals. It was so profound when she said that, it all clicked and i tried it and it worked. Remember I have nothing in my band yet, and i can eat more, but i stop at 1 cup and wait the 20 mins. I was talking on the phone today and went 6 hours and still did not feel hungry, and all i had this morning for breakfast was a 6oz greek yogurt with fruit, a cup of coffee before breakfast. Unbelievable. I may not get a fill if I keep up this way. I do want a fill, because my doctor said once i get a fill, it will be hard to eat more than 1/2 cup of food and then i really need to focus on protein and fiber. Try not eating between meals and if that does not work, don't eat the white carbs because it is not a healthy choice, and i may be filling you up but not keeping you full (carbs make you hungry and that may be what is happening to you) and you need to have high protein with each meal. I have been on a ground turkey homemade chili for 1 week and loss 4 pounds. I have only followed this meal plan for 1 week and it works, where I did not lose any weight for 10 days before my dr. set me straight. Hope this helps.

    How Much Have Yall Lost?

Stats are below! I am in a size 10-12 and used to be a 20! Soooooooooooooooo happy. My goal is to be a size 7-8. I don't think that my bone structure will allow for smaller! It's funny, I used to be really fit about 20 years ago.....taught aerobics and lifted weights etc and at my fittest weight I weighed 155 and was a size 7-8, so I am not a tiny person even when I am as fit as I can be! 20 years later I am hoping I can still get to that weight or close to it and wear that size. The weight loss is slowing now and it will probably take some time. But I have not been this happy for years ALREADY....so I don't mind!

From the album: Before pictures, and after pictures of me

I remember I was so tired, and couldn't breath well at all!
  23. I had my original sleeve done in 2016, went from 290 pre-surgery to 195, felt fantastic, no problems at all, they even invited me to have my picture taken for the doctor's advertising! Then I had some personal and professional problems and managed to gain EVERYTHING back. I met with my doctor and he recommended revision, which I am scheduled for some time in November, currently getting my clearances. He said after my endoscopy we'd discuss whether to re-sleeve or convert to bypass. He said if my sleeve was still intact it would have to be a bypass, but if it was dilated I could choose. I had my endoscopy last week and the sleeve is indeed dilated so now I have to make a decision. Another factor is I've had GERD for over 10 years and take esomeprazole daily which helps a lot but I've heard it's not great to take that forever either. I've also heard that bypass usually cures GERD, so that's another consideration. I'd love to hear thoughts from anyone who has either been re-sleeved or converted to bypass so I can have a better understanding of both options before I meet with my doctor again, Thanks!

WOW, your surgeon let you eat sherbet and apple sauce. You are lucky I'm still on liquids (clear broth). I was banded Aug 6. My gas disappeared overnight. Heating pad on high on the back for 10-15 minutes. Then relax and before you go to bed put the heating pad on again.I also had a hiatal hernia repaired. Best wishes and Be positive. I would stop the tomato soup (acid) for 2 days and see if it goes away.
  25. I was banded 10 months ago today...
