6 days out afraid of not getting enough nutrients
bethmer posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had surgery this past Wednesday, August 3, 2011 for the weight loss procedure the vertical sleeve. I attended sessions with the nutrionist and a support group before hand. Every day I am feeling stronger and more healed but am cautious as to what I can take in. I am taking Calcium and a regular every day Vitamin and what ever other medications that I am on. I am now at the stage where I can have Full liquids but am unsure of what that consists of. I was doing proteing shakes and bars just before the surgery but now my taste has changed and I literally gag trying to get a Protein shake down and I do know how important that is to my diet. So in addition to my Vitamins and medication can anyone tell me what types of Soups or liquids other than these Protein Shakes that I can have? I do have the belching and gas issues with certain things I have tried too with this procedure and just need some good support right now. -
Will I Lose All My Weight After My Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Thomas CPA replied to crosswind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The sleeve by itself should cause you to loose 50% of excess weight. Assuming the 155 is ideal then the total from 289 is 134 so the sleeve, in the course of a year, should get you down to 222. The rest, other 50% is normal diet and exercise. You will get there. I agree slower is better, to much to fast causes weakness and tears away at Protein and muscle. Mix things up, have a day of no worry splurge then go on a no/low fat low calorie eating string. This helps keep metabolism going and avoiding "starvation mode" stalls. Add some exercise, or different, exercises into mix. If you normally just walk or run, then add in resistance training. If you do resistance change up the types of exercises. This will not only help with metabolism memory but muscle memory problems. -
Will I Lose All My Weight After My Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Rev Me Up! replied to crosswind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nice to see you again, Crosswind-- I would say that your overall downward trend is fantastic and it will continue. I noticed a massive slowdown around month 7-8 and then this last month I lost 4 pounds in one week. Random. So, even if it is slow, it will continue. It sucks to not be where you want to be. You have done the right thing by not living for the scale. You can send yourself straight to the looney bin worrying about day to day fluctuations. Hopefully some more long-timers will reply and give you some 9 month to 18 month weight loss stats. I don't think 12 months is a hard stopping point. Congrats on your success! -
I am feeling very upset and discouraged.

Hello everyone I am just wanting to vent about my situation. I was banded on November 4th and have lost 52lbs including the 2 weeks for pre-op diet. Two weeks ago I went to the doctor due to pain and swelling in the port area. They said it was called a Hematoma which is a collection of blood due to hemmorage. They said all would be fine but man it just doesn't seem to be getting any better but not worse. I have to wear a abdomine belt just about 24/7. It really is affecting my days. Thank god I have not been busy at work but am getting ready to be very busy soon. For those of you who have had this issue how long was it till the pain went away? January 1st my employer is changing insurance and my doc doesn't accept the insurance. They are the only office in New Mexico. I have not a had a fill due to the success that I have had with the weight loss. I am just scared that something will go wrong and then what am I suppose to do especially if the issue mentioned above doesn't go away. Like I said I am just venting. I keep thinking are things going to be like this forever. Sometimes I think I should have been happy with how I was before and just dealt with it. I sure hope things get better soon it's starting to take a toll on me. -
Yay for getting rid of your CPAP! Unfortunately for me, my sleep apnea is just as bad now as it was pre-op and I am below goal *sniff sniff*. My settings haven't even changed The surgeons told me that 90% are cured of their apnea. They were actually really surprised that I still have it since I am in my 20s and have lost all my excess weight

So excited we leave tomorrow morning for Oahu! My hubby and I are going for our 24th anniversary and packing my suitcase I was giddy with excitement! I tried on all my "dream" dresses (I bought 10 dresses a year ago hoping one day I could wear them. All a size 8) and I am going to toot my own horn here but I look fantastic lmao! My hubby is gonna freak when he sees me in them. I am 12 pounds from goal. Hoping I lose an inch to fit in my "dream" New Year's Eve dress I bought lol. I am so happy I revised from band to bypass! (I was successful with the band-lost 120 but was about 20 pounds heavier than I am now and could never get below that- it eroded so revised to bypass) I am 6 months out from my revision and 70 down (had to gain 50 to be eligible for the bypass ) have a wonderful day everyone and happy December!

WLS holds the best track record for long term success. I still struggle & yoyo but I'm holding between 135 & 150 lbs total weight loss after rny on 2009. I know several people who have lost more than I and also maintained their weight loss for far longer. The nay sayers have no better options to offer. Were there a real alternative, the multi billion dollar diet industry would not exist. Conservative stats say 95% of wls patients maintain the loss of 50% of their excess weight. For diets, stats show 95% of dieters will regain more weight than they lost. Many, myself included thought we would be in that 5% of successful dieters. A decade after looking into surgery I accepted the definition of insanity. Diets alone were hopeless. My post opp diet for life is working for me.

Please don't compare yourself to other people. If your surgeon is happy with your progress then you are doing well. We all lose at different rates. We all have different starting weights, ages, genders, medical conditions, metabolisms, physical capabilities, etc. No two people will lose the same. Just focus on following your program, getting in all of your Protein and fluids, taking your Vitamins and supplements as directed, and exercising. -
I lost quickly in the beginning. I'm a little over a year out and down 145 lbs. My weight loss slowed down at about 8 months out. Everyone loses at a different rate though Sent from my VS987 using the BariatricPal App

Sorry, one more BCBS of IL ? regarding weight watchers
kewlshort1 replied to shawna_s's topic in Insurance & Financing
I have Humana, not BCBS, but my policy specifically excluded Weight Watchers (and some other similar programs) because they were not "physician-directed". I would guess you would have to verify it with your specific plan to make sure they don't have a similar wording. -
My date is August 5th and I am getting scared. I am self employed so I have no vacation pay to fall back on. Even without taking 7 to 10 days off in August, August was going to be an extremely tight month for me. My work includes sitting for about 10 hours per week tutoring so I am hoping I can go back after 1 week. I am 62. For a minute I thought about having the surgery in December instead when schools are out anyway. Maybe it is just an excuse to chicken out. When I was waiting for a green light in order to cross the street yesterday, the computerized signal kept repeating " wait wait wait." or maybe it was "weight weight weight "

I've always had thick lower legs. Those of you that have had this problem too, did you notice a significant change in your legs after your weight loss? I'm sure hoping I lose proportionately!

I live in AZ so I have no clue if this applies to you at all, but thought I'd throw it out there. When we applied for Individual Health Insurance, not only would they not cover me for any WLS, but they wouldn't even cover me for Health Insurance AT ALL!! NONE!! ZERO!! They claimed I exceeded the weight limit & I was turned down. (Hello!?!?!? That's why I am WANTING Health Insurance!!!) I had BCBS & it sucks!! I was told that BCBS for people with Individual Health Insurance NEVER covers WLS at all. At least that's what it is here in AZ. Yours could be totally better.
-
Diane, we are in the same boat as you. And I was turned down for individual ins once - that was at 40 lbs overweight through Humana one - so we went with BCBS a small business plan - it pays some things but not others and excluded WLS at all in FL as of 12/31/05. I finally found this company (United American Insurance) that if you are over a certain weight will cover you they just up your premium some. For us it was $26 extra a month - STILL alot better than paying $689 per month. Im waiting on them to fax or email the specific papers to say yes to WLS. Then they said it's a 6 month wait to be covered for surgery. Anyone ever heard of them or used them?

Ha! We are practically also in the same weight catagory as well!.... I went to Dr.Peter LePort's 'SMART DIMENSIONS' weight loss group and had my surgery at Orange Coast Memorial Hospital in Fountain Valley, CA. No regrets here! I noticed today that I am passing gas more than usual which I am guessing is the air that's trying to leave my body from the surgery....

Wow that is scary. I do not want to be hungry and starving after surgery. I hope the wanting feeling goes away. That would be pure hell to be so hungry. I am so glad you are doing well now though. Good luck with the weight loss and I hope it keeps falling off. -

Eating Myself To Death
2bsmallagain replied to 2bsmallagain's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I wonder if he knows this time the weight will stay off and you will get to a healthy and attractive weight at the same time. The thought of dieting is always knowing in the back of your mind that it will eventually come back. The thought of surgery is the odds are it won't ever come back. This is probably a worry for him. Your changing your lifestyle so he is worried he will be one of the things that are changed. That is my psychological advice and thought for the day thank you lol -

To band or not to band....
gone 4 ever replied to whiterabbit's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome Whiterabbit. I personally would talk to a weight loss surgeon first. Have your family Dr. run test to make sure it isn't your thyroid. Make sure that you do a lot of research and do what is right for you. Good luck on whatever you decide. -
Hair Falling Out After Lap Band Surgery
Cocoabean replied to JinTx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My hair is OK, but the other is your blood pressure dropping when you stand up. I do it from time to time. Also, if I stand for prolonged periods my pressure will suddenly drop and I'll gray out, most likely would pass out if I don't sit down. I get all sweaty and white. My PCP says he sees it in his weight loss patients (not just WLS patients) often. It seems something goes haywire in our bodies and the signals to maintain blood pressure get crossed up and it goes down when it should go up. Ah the joys! -
Hair Falling Out After Lap Band Surgery
jenjaw replied to JinTx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My hair started falling out in September, maybe October. I was banded on July 1st. It seems to be slowing down now but my surgeon assures me that I won't go bald and it will stop when I maintain my weight for a while.I've been taking 5000mgs of Biotin since May. I've lost almost 90lbs and I agree, it has more to do with the weight loss than the surgery. My friend has the lapband and it was just her 1 year bandaversary. She lost 120lbs and was loosing hair too. Now that she has been maintaining her weight her hair has come back in.......and she never went bald, LOL!! We always say it's a small price to pay! -
I was banded 12/15/09. Before the surgery I was very excited. VERY. I normally suffer from depression and anxiety... it's just part of who I am and I have taken medication for 18 years for it. I take 20mg Lexapro and Ativan when needed. I haven't been "depressed" for a long, long time. The meds always seemed to work. However, since surgery, I don't want to get out of bed, don't want to leave the house, don't want to leave my room!! I am losing weight... have lost 42 lbs. I haven't even worked more than 5 hours since surgery. I'm going to lose my insurance if I'm not careful. Maybe even my job. And this job, which I normally like, I just can't fathom the idea of going back. I can't even describe to you what I feel most of the time. Numb. Don't care. Sad. Tired. Anyone else experience this after surgery? It seems like I suffered some depression after my gall bladder surgery as well. It was an open surgery and took me awhile to recover. Do you think it's anesthesia? Or is it just me? :cursing:
