  1. As far as variation between doctors goes, I guess some are more cautious than others. Some accept and some reject ideas about carbonation, coffee, etc. Basically though there are a lot of similarities. I went to check out 2 different surgeons before choosing mine - they both had a pre-op diet, both for either 10 days or 2 weeks. One was restricted to a few no/low-fat foods, and the other had a liquid Meal Replacement. Both gave the same reason - to lose fat off the liver before surgery to avoid complications during surgery. Different approaches for the same objective. Common sense needs to be used, but the doctors have information we don't that would make a difference to what would make sense, so they need to give rules. Do you know what chemical affect smoothie yogourt mixed with stomach acid will have on a swollen irritated stomach? Yogourt is actually good on the stomach, I think - I'm not trying to scare you off of it, but that's why we need to check out the rules. One bandster on here talked about being allowed solids within a week post-op but had problems, another said, same deal, but they didn't have problems - who knows what the end results of those will be vs. those who have waited longer to start solids because of their doctors advice. Common sense would say though that if you are having problems on solids, go back to mushies or liquid. So yes, we do still need to use it, then check with the doctor. Glad to hear you're not hungry on a 600 calorie diet, but if you are talking post-op you will have a harder time soon when your stomach is less swollen. Good Luck.

    Surgery glue

I don't remember the skin around the glue being red just iodine discoloration. My glue started peeling after about a week. It was totally gone after about 3 weeks. It definitely got itchy. It also pinched me for a few days when the swelling went down. If it's really really itchy and red you may want to call your doctor to confirm you aren't having a reaction.

    Day 3 mushy

I think that's a bit early. I am 2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks puree and 2 weeks soft. Get to go on soft next Tuesday. Seems every Dr. has a different opinion, but I haven't had any problems, pain or anything so I am sticking to it.

    X-mas Eve & X-mas food choices

I'm on puréed and in week four. I've been fine with tuna and cod.

    Sex life after WLS

Not a silly question at all! I'm 2.5 months post op. I find my libido varies wildly due to the fluctuating hormones. Some weeks I just don't care for any type of contact, some we're intimate 3 or more times a day lol. Physically, sex feels the same (then again I haven't lost a large amount of weight yet). Still have the energy and endurance I did pre-op, nothing hurts, we can do all the same things we did before. I may be a tad more flexible now, but that may be due to working out and stretching. A fun little result of losing weight is that my boyfriend has an easier time picking me up now so that's a thing. Now this might just be me and I should probably start scheduling sessions with my therapist again, but I find that I'm a lot more aware of my body and self conscious than I used to be. My partner still finds me attractive and has said that he'll be just as attracted to me when I get to 120 lbs as he was when I was 250 lbs. But, sometimes before or during sex I'll be very aware of my rolls or belly or some other imperfection and get really depressed and turned off. Keep in mind, most people will probably get confidence boosts from losing weight so this likely won't happen to you! Side note: Fertility will improve as you lose the excess weight. If you aren't already, you'll want to get on some sort of birth control (pill, nexplanon, etc). Condoms are still necessary if you aren't in a committed relationship.

    What do you eat?

I don't know. I was told all clears for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of purees then semi soft for 2 weeks. Emphasis on high protein, low carbs but with the few calories I am taking in, not sure carbs would negatively affect me. I have a friend who used a different surgeon and was sleeved Tuesday with a BMW more than 10 points higher than me and he is drinking smoothies and going to the gym already. Doesn't sound right to me at all.

Six months post op and down 78lbs....

Congratulations on your weight loss thus far. One thing to do now at this stage is to assess your protein intake. Your daily protein requirement is met by a combination of the amount of protein you obtain from food combined with the amount of protein from protein supplements (protein shakes, protein bars). Right after gastric bypass surgery, the volume of food you consume is minuscule (2 ounces) per meal. But as you get further along, the meal volume increases. Therefore you have a very important option available to you. As a result, you can begin to reduce your reliance on protein shakes. I went from 3 a day, down to 2, down to 1 and eventually none when I reached 1 cup per meal at a year and a half post-op. This offloading of protein supplements is important because protein shakes contain calories. If you can reduce your caloric intake, then you can maximize your weight loss. There are two phases to weight loss surgery. These are the weight loss phase and the maintenance phase. The weight loss phase is fairly short. In my case I transitioned into the maintenance phase at around 7 months.

    Help! Need to get back!

I'm on day 2 of LilMissDivas bootcamp. So far it's going we'll. I can feel the headache coming on from no sugar/carbs/diet coke. I can get through it. I can make it! The 3 lb loss today was nice but I'm doing this to get back eating correctly, not for the loss. I was pleasantly surprised how not hungry I was yesterday. I'm feeling better about being able to get this weight back off.
  9. I am about a week ahead of you and am having similar struggles. Yogurt and poached eggs work, tuna is iffy. I tried ground beef and it was a BAD idea even though the Dr. included it in my diet. It feels like I'll be living on this for a while. You are not alone!
  10. Thanks Terri, I am following the instructions of my NUT. My first week I was liquids, then 2nd week creamed soups. Yesterday was my 2 week mark so I guess I am actually into my 3rd week. So I don't think I am progressing to fast. I am by no means eating solid food. Everything needs to be ground and very moist.
  11. Anyone else out there experience this? I did great with liquids, then creamed soups and yogurts, but this is day 2 of being on soft/ground foods and I feel nauseas when I eat. I have tried chicken salad, turkey meatballs with sauce, scrambled eggs. I don't know if it's the foods or what? I need to eat because if not I need to drink protein shakes, and I'm getting very tired of them! Any help, or advice would be great!
  12. I am a band to sleeve revision. Got my sleeve almost 3 1/2 yrs ago....never really lost what I gained back and am sure I have stretched my stomach since then. I really want to get my restriction back and get this 30 back off. Can it be done? Any suggestions? Words of encouragement?
  13. Sounds like you need to contact your doctor because it could be acid reflux, pnuemonia or even blood clots. About two weeks after my surgery i started feeling pain in my upper stomach and back on the left side that would not go away. I contacted my doctor he had me come in for a CT-Scan and found that I had blood clots in my stomach. So please don't take any chances with this go and have it checked out. Good luck!

    Typical day's food

I'm nine weeks out, and my diet is pretty varied. I haven't tried fresh veggies or fruit yet (my surgeon says 3 months for those) but I eat pretty much everything else in moderation. Typical day is three meals, and two Snacks, for instance, here is today's plan (I work nights, so keep that in mind: 5pm: Boca burger, on a Joseph's flax, wheat bran pita (I'll probably eat about 3/4) 10pm: Premier Protein shake 2am: homemade quiche with ham, cheese, broccoli 5am: string cheese 8am: 1/2 of a Thomas's bagel thin, with Peanut Butter That's about 750 calories, 75 grams protein, 30 grams net carbs according to MFP I average 600-800 calories per day, get at least 60 grams of protein, and try and keep the net carbs (carbs minus fiber) under 50. Hope this helps!
  15. The fluid intake had me worried as well...I was able to drink quite a bit as soon as 3 days post op and still have no problem drinking (not guzzling, but more than enough to satisfy). My doctor said some people could tolerate fluids well, others had to sip, sip, sip (Thank God I'm able to drink okay! Love the outdoors, staying hydrated was a major pre op concern for me.) I was sleeved May 8th and finally able to add flaky fish today...we baked some redfish filets. Tolerated it fine, but I made the mistake of eating two pieces (probably no more than 8 oz. total)...really uncomfortable feeling for an hour or so afterward! As tigerbelle said, you really should consult with your nutritionist. Will keep you in our prayers.
  16. You look amazing I am so proud of you I just had surgery last week and I hope to look as great as you
  17. Hair Loss

I had my surgery Dec. 21. 2011 and I started noticing that my edges were getting thin about 2 weeks ago. I just started using castor oil on them and it seems to be working. I'll really be able to tell after more use, but I think it's working.
  19. Hey All, About a week and a half ago I went for my 2nd adjustment...and I'm not sure if its too tight... I'm not sure I know the difference between restriction and too tight... it takes me about 35-45 minutes to eat about 1/2 cup of tuna... chicken breast even if well chewed gets stuck or comes back up... however weird things like baked tostitos and salsa go down... ice cream unfortunately goes down! But is that restriction??? Is that what I'm supposed want to happen? help please.... Thanks in advance!
  20. Better late than never, right? It's FFFC time! And this week's FFFC will be voted on by your fellow VSG'ers to see who's got the most unique/creative/scandalous (in a good way!) confession! Your confessions can be food/sleeve related or not, so let's hear it! What's your dirty little secret of the week? ETA: We'll be voting Monday so you have the weekend to get your confessions in. Here's mine: When my sons father (I affectionately refer to him as Spermy... Short for Spermy McDonor ) came and dropped our son off on Sunday, I purposely made sure that I had showered, blow dried my hair, put on fresh makeup and a fresh spritz of his favorite perfume so that when he saw me in my slimmer form and form fitted clothes, he'd feel a sharp stab in his gut and realize what a moron he is for 1) being such a prick and 2) calling me a fat effing biatch a few weeks ago. I don't ever want him back, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy torturing him a bit I know my plan was a huge success when he did a double take when he saw me and lingered just a moment too long when he was kissing our son goodbye. It feels good.
  21. Last weekend I went out with my husband and in-laws. I picked up a green tank top to wear because of St. Patrick's Day, and I bought it without trying it on. When I put it on later, I learned that it was showing off a lot of my breasts. My nipples weren't in danger of making an appearance, but it was a LOT of cleavage. I don't normally show cleavage. I wore the shirt anyway. My husband didn't say much other than to ask if I was sure since it was a lot more than I usually show off. When I first arrived, my father-in-law introduced me to an old friend of his and the friend's wife. The wife was giving me a look like I was incredibly loose. I started to feel a bit uncomfortable and started crossing my arms in front of me, but I stopped when I realized what I was doing. It wasn't covering anything, and it was stupid. Who cares what people think? I went dancing and had fun, and I never worried about what I was showing off. It's been a week today, and my husband and in-laws are still talking about my shirt and all the men who were appreciating my shirt last weekend. My husband makes comments to me when we are alone, and his comments are appreciative. My in-laws mostly comment about the people looking. I don't respond. And yes, I do plan to wear the shirt again. Frankly, the women from Survivor show more cleavage. I think this was more remarkable to my husband and in-laws because I don't usually show that much.

    Munchie Help Needed

Hello, The last couple of days I have had the munchies. This is the first time since my sleeve 23 Jul. I can only eat so much string cheese. I've also munched on pecans and walnuts. I know it is from stress at work and completing my degree...finally. Drinking Water doesn't help. My first reaction was to purchase grapes but those are high in carbs. I also purchased a box of Atkins snack bars but my nut said to stay away from Protein type bars. I'm stall so much and I don't want to regain any of the weight. What do the rest of you do? Thank you
  23. I lost about 25 pounds or so during my 4 weeks on liquids. It was darn close to a pound a day. I have 3 small children I had to feed everyday- so that was kinda tough at first. It got easier day by day. Watching your weight fall off made it worth it! It is a great way to jump start your weight loss, that's for sure!
  24. cinward, do you have a nutritionist/dietitian? I know you said your dr told you to test foods, but did you have a consult with a NUT? if you did, I would call him/her for guidance I had my surgery on May 6, so I am almost 6 weeks out...the first couple of weeks I was liquid only and lost about 20 lbs....then I moved on to soft foods and now I am--like you--in the testing phase...but since losing those first 20 lbs., I've only lost another 4 lbs., so I can understand your frustration..those breakfast and lunch amounts you listed sound similar to what I am eating portion-wise...I might eat a little more in the evening, like you...tonight I ate at a local restaurant and had baked trout--I ate about 1/3 to 1/2 of what was served to me...no salad but I did have a few bites of steamed veggies...you didn't say how much of your meal you ate, but I know physically I couldn't handle much more than I had tonight and in fact probably overdid it a little...as for the Water, I still cannot guzzle for sure, although I don't have to sip like others have all in all, it doesn't seem like you are eating huge portions compared to others...my dietitian and fellow sleevers both here on the message board and in support group keep advising me not to compare myself to others and not to focus overly on pounds lost...I am trying very hard to follow that advice, and I recommend that to you as well let me ask this? how do you feel--health wise that is? I think that is most important {{{cinward}}} hang in there

    Zumba!

Your hospital discharge documents should spell out the level of activity you are supposed to stick to until your follow-up appointment. As with everything else, doctors differ. But mine (and many) encourages walking for exercise immediately postop---but vetoes other exercise until the follow-up. After 4 weeks, I was cleared for all physical activity with no restrictions.
