  1. Hi everyone, I'm currently doing my 6 month physician supervised weight loss prior to having my gastric bypass. I'm probably going to have a surgery date sometime in late February or early March of 2019. What worries me is that I'm also in college and this is going to be at the beginning of the semester. Should I take a semester off while I have the surgery and recoup or is it possible to have my surgery, take a few days off to recoup and carry on my schoolwork? I'm afraid that I might have to miss a week and receive a failing grade or at least one less than what I deserve simply because I had to have surgery.
  2. I am pending approval however my doctor feels so confident lol they have already sched surgery for 10/25/18! I too am nervous and excited, we got this tho!!! Your a couple weeks ahead of me, but Id be your surgery buddy!!!!!

    Back to Work

My doctor suggested two-weeks but when I told him my job was at a desk and I had the flexibility to walk, stretch use a stand-up desk he OK'd a return at 1 week. One of my colleagues is a corporate instructor and she took two-weeks, but wished for three. Said standing was difficult all day. My suggestion is to listen to your body. Only you know how your body will react to long standing / sitting, etc. at your work setting. Like you at day three I was probably feeling much like you and thinking that returning at the one week mark seemed foolish, but I can tell you from my own experience that each day got a little easier and I felt a little more together and stronger. Today is my first day back, I won't work a 10-hour day like my I did prior to, but I will work a normal workday and (2.5 hrs to go). Good luck with your decision and remember we are all here to help and support you
  4. Hey guys! So my surgery is scheduled 10/25/18 (pending BCBS approval , yikes) but I just had a couple question. Idk if anyone out there is like me so I'll just ask lol I'm a diabetic w/ high blood pressure, high cholesterol, retinopathy and neuropathy and ohmygosh anything else medically related to diabetes I'm pretty much the poster child for. Anywho. Question is, how long did it take for ya'll whom have this kind of illnesses to be off insulin or blood pressure medicine etc..? If it wasn't instant like right after surgery how was it monitored ? I'm just concerned. Thanks for listening!

    OCD Planning

I buy the variety pack protein powder drinks. My favorite are syntrax brand. Coworker who had bypass 10 yrs ago turned me onto crystal light peach tea, mix with syntrax lemon tea and about 20 Oz water. Yummy!!! Before surgery thought it was OK. Post? Don't know why but I love it!

    OCD Planning

I was extreme about planning. I went to the soup isle at the grocery store and spent hours looking for options during my purred stage. Which is funny because I ended up making homemade soup instead. I bought protein shakes, protein water, SF jello, multiple broth types, about 10 different SF drink options.... and used about 5% of what I bought. I don't regret getting prepared though, because it helped me get into a really great mindset. Do what makes you feel best!
  7. Hey everyone I'm officially done with all my procedures. The last was Saturday with the endoscopy/colonoscopy. Now I wait for a date. I'm praying for a December date. Going into 2019 with a better body and a healthier one/life. Gym life... Sent from my 5049Z using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. " Actually the studies were for 10% “overweight” so 10% over the top of the range. But you do you! And your BP should definitely be a guide. But for me, no, I honestly don’t feel different at 135 and at 160. I do believe those are vanity pounds not health pounds. " Thanks for clarifying this @jess9395! So my RDs position is correct. Good and interesting to know you felt no difference with 25extra pounds on you! That's amazing, honestly. Yes, I can only do me. I do think there are vanity issues mixed with my desire to be in normal weight zone. I also hope to be as low as I healthily can to ease pain and maybe help the bp. I don't know about that though, since I have heart damage from chemo/radiation and also have a familial blood pressure issue. My skinny sissy is ideal weight and still has super high bp. So did our mom.

    *** September 2018 Sleevers ***

So, here is my first personal update in a few weeks. I apologize for the delay in the update, but I've not been feeling very well. Disclaimer: before anyone freaks out about what I am about to talk about here, please remember that I am still pre-op and my situation is far from your situation. Unless you have a history of what I am talking about, you are very unlikely to have one in your pre-op phase... I had what I thought was a stall in my pre-op phase. I had cheated a bit over the past few weeks, but not enough to gain 8 pounds. I had been feeling sick to my stomach and had abdominal pain for a few weeks, but last Wednesday it got really bad. I went to work but ended up leaving early. I sat at home and hoped the pain would go away but it only got worse. I ended up in the emergency room about 4am on Thursday morning. I was given an IV, Fentanyl for the pain, and Zofran for the nausea. I was sent for a CT scan and they found that I had a small bowel obstruction. I was admitted, had a N-G tube placed (a naso-gastro tube stuck up my nose and down into my stomach - yes, it is as nasty as it sounds), and was given more pain meds. The surgeon came to talk to me and he said that he did not believe that I needed surgery and that we would wait to see if it clears on its own. (This was my 14th small bowel obstruction since 1995 and I have only had to have surgery because of the one in May 2017 and August 2017.) The surgeon also changed my pain med to Dilaudid, which is a much stronger med and actually helps when I have a blockage. So, after not eating for a couple of days and having the contents of my stomach vacuumed out, the blockage finally released and I was allowed to eat again. Since the blockage has released, I've lost almost 10 pounds (eight of which was stuck) and after my official weigh-in at work on Tuesday, I'll be updating my progress.

  13. My interest is piqued. I will be having RNY surgery in Columbus on September 5th. if you are in Columbus, having surgery September 17th my curiousity has. been aroused. Where and who is your surgeon? Nnoni and mercmerc had theirs in July, one at Riverside, one at Nationwide Children's. There is one who will have hers at Riverside in November-December, I'm at OSU, so where are you? Tell me more about you and I'll do the same. My highest weight was 355 and its approx 309 Now 10 days before surgery. Welcome and I hope things go well for you!
  14. Yes, but your statement and my statement from the RD are different. Ideal body weight for a woman is medically defined as: 100lbs for the first 5 feet, then 5 pounds for every inch over 5 feet. I'm 5'4" so my ideal body weight is 120lbs. You are saying the studies observe that +10% over ideal body weight which for me would be 132lbs shows no medical disadvantage. The possiblity being that for every pound over 132lbs, there is medical disadvantage. My RD is saying that "what does it hurt to let yourself off the hook." You look great now at this weight (163lbs). So go ahead and get down to the 151lbs (70% loss of EBW -- which is based on ideal weight) and not worry about trying to go lower. Cuz it is not significantly better if you are 10% above "normal weight." Normal weight range is defined for me as anywhere from 108-145lbs depending on which chart you are looking at. And RD is saying that 145lbs +10% is 159-160lbs. I'm betting there are medically significant problems with being at 159-160lbs at my height. I actually experience some of them still--even though they are greatly improved. Just the reduction in weight bearing load alone will improve my arthritis pain from 159-160lbs down to the 130ish area. I will have less fat, so hopefully, my cancer recurrence rate will also improve in the normal weight range. And I may finally be able to ditch my last bp med. My bp is still hangin between 130-145/80. Two completely different weights lol: 132lbs and 160lbs. I bet you felt better when you got to 135lbs than you did at 160lbs? Running was easier? Well, my secret goal is 125-130lbs. But I'm afraid to hope and plan for that cuz I don't want to let myself down. So I set a goal of <145lbs. Anything below it works cuz I will officially be in normal weight territory. Sorry for the math stuff!!! Cheers everyone! Actually the studies were for 10% “overweight” so 10% over the top of the range. But you do you! And your BP should definitely be a guide. But for me, no, I honestly don’t feel different at 135 and at 160. I do believe those are vanity pounds not health pounds.
  15. Hi Everyone, I just joined this site after finding it yesterday. After a recent 20lb weight loss and regain (for like the 100th time) I have decided to pursue sleeve surgery. About me: 50 years old. Current weight 270. 5'7. I have been hovering around 270 for about 5 years now after previously living in the 250 world for a few years. For about 10 years before that, I hovered around 230. I am sick of the weight being in control of how I live, dress, socialize, travel, my career, etc. I want this lens removed from my vision of myself.....and want to deal with the challenges of life without also worrying about being fat, feeling sick, breathing heavy, struggling to keep pace, SWEATING, etc. I live a pretty interesting life IN SPITE OF the weight. I have an amazing career and I travel across the globe for it....but I now feel uncomfortable in airplane seats - thank God I can still fasten the seatbelt without the extender, but it ISNT easy. I now know I cant put the tray table down and work on my laptop because I am just too close to it with all this weight. I am an executive. I look at my peers and see all the pretty clothes and gorgeous shoes around the office. I try, but it never looks as good on me and forget wearing heels, they just hurt too much! I am pretty sure I am being judged at work for my appearance and missing some advancement opportunities because of my weight. Of course, nobody would ever SAY this....but I know it's true. I love good food Not fast food, not chips, not fries, not burgers....not pizza. This body fat is curated from the best risotto, beautiful foie gras, velvety red wine, lobster thermidor.....you get it :-( . But I have decided that my gourmand lifestyle in exchange for a smaller body is one I am willing to make. And I am sure I can also figure out how to eat well AND low fat/high protein/small portion and still enjoy life. As my weight has climbed, I have avoided people and experiences. Just recently I was in the south of france on a little relaxing beach trip and a friend of mine texted me that she, too, was there with her husband. She was staying at the hotel next to me and wanted to get together for dinner...I was all for it...until she said "and we can take photos"...which meant she and her 110 lbs gorgeous self (she is a fashion consultant and VERY superficial - it's all about the "look" - a term she uses on everyone "I love your look" - clothes, hair, makeup) wanted to post photos on social media of me next to her.....nope. I told her I'd made other plans and never did see her. I think she's insulted...but I had to do it and one day I will explain to her, but not now. Anyway, putting the psychological reasons aside, I feel crappy these days. I'm always hot. My body is always achy (legs ache every day), I have a chronic cough (it's bad - I am working at 50% lung capacity) for which I have seen one of the country's top pulmonary specialists - he says I am asthmatic and prescribed an inhaler. I now snore like a buzz saw - THAT's attractive, eh? My boyfriend likes to say I was building houses overnight - sometimes apartment buildings. I have already had a sleep study and was negative for apnea - doc just said "well, you're heavy!". I am carrying the fat in my belly, chest and arms. I am pre-diabetic and brain fog like mad. NO way to live. Being heavy AND being peri-menopausal are NOT a good combination. One has to go. I have confirmed that my insurance generally covers the surgery and my personal approval is pending for the surgeon's submission. I have done the intake interview and now have an upcoming meeting with the surgeon. I am hoping to have surgery in Early December/late November, as timing is important for me given that my travel schedule picks up in mid January. I am reading your advice and your stories and appreciate every one. Focused on understanding what you are eating pre and post op and what I may need to buy. Figure this may be a good time to start a walking routine and hitting the weights a few days a week to build a little muscle in advance of the loss. Also plan to start taking biotin for my hair. Anyone have any other "now" advice? I also entered my height and weight into a BMI/ideal weight tool and it said my ideal weight in 134 and I have 136 to lose. I thought that was cool to know - I am carrying around a full extra person. It's really time for her to go. Thank you for reading and for sharing your stories with me. Suzanne

    *** September 2018 Sleevers ***

My surgery got moved to Sept. 13th because I found out I had an infected wisdom tooth. But I'm still on the pre-op diet. Mine allows protein shakes and 4 oz of lean meat and vegetables for dinner. My calorie cap is 1200. I was REALLY worried about being hungry all the time, but it really hasn't been bad. I started early so I could get a jump start on weight loss, but also so I could take Advil if I got horrible headaches, which I did the first couple days, but haven't had to take any since. Right now because of my oral surgery, I'm on all liquids anyway. I found 2 brands of protein powder I really like. Vega protein and greens and Integrated Supplements whey isolate protein. My stomach doesn't tolerate Splenda/sucralose and Vega and Integrated use stevia and fructose and fruit extract, but still staying under the 200 calorie cap per shake, over 15 grams protein, under 10 net carbs.

    Received my surgery date!!

It is an exciting prospect, only 10 days to my own RNY on September 5th, perfectly calm, anticipating the changes as something good, have my little bag half-packed, tying up what loose ends I can , praying that God is with me , watching, protecting. and loving me. It will be as it well be, I am calm and secure in that fact.
  18. LETS TALK SHOES So today has been a low day for me. I thought I’d do a little shoe therapy even though my feet aren’t back to their normal size. I was very disappointed in my choices. I’m a size 10 so 11 and 12 or 10W is what I needed to find. Well, I bought two pair but I don’t feel much better. I couldn’t fit in any of the cute styles. Today has been tough. I ate too many calories yesterday. I just feel blah. I thought I’d post because not everyday is wonderful.
  19. 10 more Days and counting them down Eagerly. September 5th is coming, don t want to be called "Square" so Baby,I Will Be There! Don't suppose my surgeon Dr Needleman is sitting home thinking about,me, but I am about him. Ragweed season is underway strongly in Central. Ohio, hope he doesn't sneeze and I end up with a misshapen pouch on the wrong side of my stomach, now THAT could,be,problematic. Just want an well-draining turkey egg with its dime-sized st9ma into my jejuneum. Don't think it's Too Much to ask!
  20. I gained 1 lb post op but have lost 8 lbs from my surgery day weight. I’m 5 days post op at the moment. But before I only lost 10 lbs on the preop diet. So I’m down 18 lbs total. Yay!! I’m seeing everyone say different things.
  21. I just joined this site today. I’m 49/male, 6’3”, and had lap band surgery in 2011...starting weight was 305 and I got down to 233 in probably 6 months. Over the years the band stopped working, just didn’t feel enough restriction. And I put all the weight back on over the course of four years (2014 to present). My biggest mistake was relying pretty much 100% on the science and not making enough behavioral changes (I made a few early on but it was not nearly enough). I’m scheduled for sleeve surgery on 10/9 and I’m excited to have it done. Of course my goal is to learn from my mistake and make the necessary behavioral and dietary changes this time. I want to get down to 210 which was my weight at one point in college. Any and all tips and advice are welcome and I’m proud to be here with all of you.
  22. And join me too also my goal is 15JuniorAgain, will I make it? Jury is out but I am going to work to make it possible. Look for me in September 2019 or the Spring of 2020, I really am Going to Shine!⭐🌝⭐

    August 2018 sleeve surgery!!

You have got to stop chugg8ng that Chilled Cactus Juice unless you remember to remove the thorns first. LOL. Just waiting for the day I too become post-surgical and have to find my own normal. Just 10 days or so to go!😷
  24. I’m scheduled for sleeve surgery on 10/9. I currently have a lap band so will have that removed at the same time. I did the 2 week liquid diet 7 years ago when I had the lap band operation. I tried the liquid diet again a few weeks ago and I went crazy! Any tips, advice on what protein shake to drink?
