  1. Oh curse you Sun Chips for being so delicious and going down so smoothly. I was able to eat about 10 chips with no problem. The problem is, that's going to be a BIG problem because I'm addicted to those things. I guess it's a little better than potato chips, but I still shouldn't be eating them. Boy were they good, though.
  2. LB i think your looking at this from a slightly wrong view. the AVG sleeve weight loss is 60% of EXCESS weight. From your post it looks like you are only 8-10 from that so barely under avg for the surgery. To get better than avg results you will have have to commit to above avg control of portions and food choice and at the later stages in time that you are in above avg exercise routine. 1. Are you tracking every bite you eat - if not start - myfitnesspal or any other app. 2. Are you watching the sugar content of everything you eat - food tracking app again. 3. Keep carbs complex and avoid simple anything. 4. Turn around every box in your kitchen and if it has more than 5 grams of sugar per serving get rid of it. There is no good sugar. You are still in your first year and avg weight loss continues -albeit slower - for 18 months so you still have time to push past avg and get your goal. Refocus on the mental game. From here on out it is all about the lifestyle changes you have worked on to make new and better habits. I wish you luck and success going forward

October Sleevers! How Much Have You Lost?

Hello all, Sleeved 10/16 HW: 368 SW: 350 CW: 339 Down 29 pounds. I was disappointed to find out that I'd only lost 6 pounds since my last appt on 10/22. I don't weigh myself at home so perhaps I'm in one of those dreaded stalls? IWW as cleared for full excercise so the next weigh in should be much more significant.

    Alcoholism in loved ones

I lost my mum 10 years ago to cirrosis of the liver, after 15 years of living with -as we affectionatly called her - the ninjashebitch from hell. I loved her to pieces and still find it hard to come to terms with it all sometimes. I was given loads of advice including the 'let them hit rock bottom'.....she did.... and then she died. In my experiance the problem with that advice is, after they are gone you are left with the knowledge/guilt/horror that you abandoned them. Just my honest opinion Nina x

4 months post op and preggo!

Congratulations! I am also one of those who got the surgery for fertility reasons. IMO, babies are complete, absolute blessings- under any circumstance. Yes, the timing might not be completely ideal, but you will get through it, and it will be SO worth it! I got pregnant at 8 months out, and have had a *really* hard time with morning sickness. I struggle to get in enough calories, but once I hit 16 weeks I have managed a lot better. Even with all that, though, we had our 19 week ultrasound almost a week ago and baby is perfectly on target. If you just do what your doctor/OB tells you, everything is most likely going to be just fine!
  14. I was banded in Ontario Canada, and I am self pay. It was 3 weeks from initial consult to surgery day. In that three weeks I had a sleep study, pre-op exam with my GP and 10 day liquid diet. I think it depends on the individual clinic

    Will I chicken out?????

The pain is not too bad and they give you pain meds. It's for a very short time. And once you drop the weight -- or even half of it -- you will feel a million times better! Do make a comprehensive list of why you want to lose the weight. Be specific -- i.e. not "for better health" but "to get my cholesterol into normal range", "to get my HA1c into normal range", etc. Besides all the reasons you want to lose weight, is there emotional pain associated with the excess weight? How bad will some minor physical pain for a week or so after surgery be compared to the long-term emotional pain of being unhappy with your size and/or health? How about the pain of having to have heart surgery down the road? (if that runs in your family; it does in mine). Whenever I hear of a diabetic person having to have a foot or leg amputated I cringe -- that's got to be awful. I was headed down that road in the long term. Or gout. Or joint problems from carrying around 100 extra lbs. Then there's another thing: have you been consistently 100 lbs overweight and holding for a long time? Or is a steady creep upwards, a few lbs per year? Without the band, how much will you weigh 5 yrs from now? 10? For me, it was a "lose 20 lbs, gain 40 back" scenario, with my weight rising year after year as I desperately tried to diet back to normal. But diets just didn't work long term for me, and they do not for most people. Not trying to be scary here or anything -- just suggesting looking at all the ramifications of long term obesity vs. a small amount of short term pain that will give you an excellent tool for getting into a normal weight range.:grouphug:
  16. Got my approval yesterday :clap2: , I called today and scheduled my procedure for 2/23. I'm ready to do this tomorrow, but I want to fully understand all the $$ issues. With 3 kids I'm reluctant to commit to anything until I have a firm grasp of the financials. I'm doing it either way I just don't want to switch docs, since mine is out of network (70/30 compared to 90/10). I'm not really nervous about the procedure-I've tried for the past 15 years and all I do is put on another 10 lbs annually; I'm just worried :phanvan that I will be one of those who it doesn't work for. I'm only telling my hubby, parents & sis. Everybody else can just guess until I know if it works or not. Reading the sucesses of everybody is encouraging, hopefully in a year i'll have a ticker marked at the half way mark:biggrin1: . Can anybody tell me how to add one of those? I've never used one of these forums, but a former paient of my doc suggested it; she said that the support is amazing and will really get you through the tough times and makes the good ones even better. Hope so. That's my new keyword for 2007 hope/hopeful:). Good luck on your journey to all who read this, I know that I'm excited to get started on mine. Cheers and goodnight (or good morning since it is way past my bedtime I've been kinda wired today with my good news:notagree )
  17. I woke up yesterday 12/21. I was pretty nervous and my wife and I headed out to the hospital at 8:30 am, my surgery time was at 11 am. I was called into presurgery around 10 am and was VERY VERY nervous. I was not nervous at all until the night before. They slipped me a pre-surgery drug to relax me and off to the operating room I went. I was in recovery and awake by 12:30. I wok up fat and was able to move pretty easily. I was up and walking around the hospital by 1:30. I have hoestly felt pretty good. I have not needed any pain medication. I feel like I have done 500 sit up. I am a bit sore when I cough too, but nothing unmanagable. I got home from the hospital about 3 pm today. Went to blockbuster on the way home and am having a movie night on the recliner. I am not hungry. I am able to get 2-3 oz down per meal. I did chew my Vitamins today and felt a but uncomfortable for a couple minutes, but nothing major. I am having a hard time staying on top of the Water. I cannot believe that I finally did it. I did not have to be on a two week liquid diet prior to surgery, only 24 hours beofre. As of today I already lost 11 pounds, most I am positive i water. But it is a start. Enough for now, off to watch a movie.

How Fast Has Your Weightloss Been?

I lost almost 100lbs in the first year. Generally I averaged between 7 and 10 lbs per month. Realize that the more you lose and the less you weigh, the slower the weight loss will get. Due to some family issues late last fall I kind of fell off the 'bandwagon'. I haven't gained anything but haven't lost either. So I've been almost 8 months of maintenance and that has been pretty easy for the most part. I am down to needing to lose the last 20-25lbs before reaching goal so it has become more difficult for me to lose, but to be completely honest, my head just hasn't been in it lately....so sitting at this weight is my own doing. If you work hard at it and follow the rules you should be able to be down a considerable amount by next spring. Good luck to you !!! Patricia 11/16/06 306/202/175ish
  19. Hello everyone, first post here. I am scheduled to have surgery on Sept. 10, 2008. I am a little nervous but am very excited about starting a new life. A life that will allow me to be a healthier, happier person.

    acid reflux

Bexlygal- No you are not the only one! I experienced the same problem. I never had reflux prior to being banded and once I reached what I though to be my sweet-spot, which was 7.1cc's in a 10cc band, everything went haywire. Couldn't rest, hard to catch breath, sore throat, etc. At first I thought it was a sinus infection, got a slight unfill. Nothing. Went to PCP and he immediately said I should get an unfill, even though he recommended a complete unfill, my lapband doc suggested a partial to see how things worked. Took out another .25 and suggested I take Prilosec OTC every morning. That worked wonders, and two weeks later, I was able to get another small fill. Now I'm at 6.5 and have started losing again with increased exercise. My laband doc will only do my fills in increments of .10 or less at this point. Now I chew 1 pepcid complete in the morning and before bedtime and I'm doing fine. I have an appt. tomorrow and will ask for a teeny-weeny fill, because I think I'm finally at a good place. Hope you feel better soon, but if you have to get an unfill, don't stress over it because reflux can lead to so many more serious issues. I'd rather be a slow loser than one with an eroded esophagus or throat cancer!!! Take care.

    reaching out for help

I don't know your background, and although I am a Christian, I am not suggesting that you "find religion" as your solution. But many, many churches (you may have to check around) have good, kind, caring people who will reach out to you in tough times like you are going through. Some churches many even have a counseling pastor/staff member who you can talk to, work through the emotions of the loss, and what to do next. As suggested above, we can try and be there for you, talk to you through this site, or PM, or email, but sometimes, there is nothing like someone reaching out to you, and just comforting you, listening as you cry, hand you the tissues, and then helping you to the next step in life. As for the fill, well, keep checking more doctors, in a wider circle around where you are, to see if you can find a more favorable situation. If you can't find any other options, then focus on maintaining. Now may not be the time to "get back on track" or try and loose the short term gain. But maintain, control portion sizes, make better choices on what you do eat, clear out the comfort food/junk food that creeps back in. Walk 10 minutes, 3x a day, if you can't get started on the 30 minutes + kinda of exercise. Once you are back into the 3 ten min walks, see if you can stretch one of them into 15, and then 20 mins, etc. Just put on those shoes, and do it, friend.

    Hello and thank you

Thank you all for your encouraging words. I appreciate all of your comments and questions. pf337-I didn't have a set presurgery diet. My doc just said try to eat low cal/fat free for a couple weeks leading up to the surgery. I had written guidelines and sample diets for each phase after surgery. As for now, the written material I have simply says to eat 3 ounces of lean meat/protein with a couple tablespoons of vegetables and a couple tablespoons of starch to be eaten in the order of meat/vegetable/starch until completed or full. I can't eat everything so starches are few and far between. My only problem is that at work it is tempting to "grab and go" just whatever I can, so fighting the urge to eat whatever junk that is lying around is a battle I still face every day. WasABubbleButt-No, I didn't have a spinal. It wasn't even offered. I wouldn't have taken it anyway. I was given a spinal for my knee surgery(rugby injury) and had difficulty urinating for about two weeks. I came out of recovery at about noon and was making laps on the floor at 1:30 pm. I would have been out of recovery sooner but the dilaudid kicked my butt! The nurse kept reminding me to breathe deep until my O2 sat stayed up on its own. I was discharged the next morning at 10 am. I'm thankful everything went as well as it did.

    dec 2012 sleevers

Sleeved 12/23/2013 (I am one of those people who has to lose ONLY 100 pounds) For those of you who feel that our journey is less noble because we were not even larger, keep in mind that our co-morbidities are life threatening and painful, too. I have already had one stroke and my spine is degenerating and will not hold that extra 100 pounds anymore. I only say that because there have been a couple of recent comments in the forum inferring that we do not deserve access to this surgery. We need to be less judgemental and more supportive of sleeve brothers and sisters, especially since so many do not get encouragement at home. Pre-op weight 235 pounds (I am 5'4") Day of surgery weight 208 pounds Day of discharge weight 212 pounds Current weight 2/16/2014 - 189 pounds So far from the beginning, I have lost 46 pounds from my head, arms, and boobs. My belly still looks disgusting and has shifted south, but has gone from 53 inches to 50 inches, so I will accept that as progress. I am eating regular foods O K, but still cannot tolerate cabbage and cauliflower. Most days I am eating around 700 - 800 calories. It is challenging to get in 64 ounces of Water and 70 grams of Protein, but I come close. Except for a nerve pain issue not associated with the surgery: I am feeling a lot better sleeping much better do not make so many frequent trips to the bathroom exercise is easier and I can exercise longer I can move around easier and clip my own toenails I can roll over in bed easier Reflux is 80% better Hot flashes and night sweats are gone Have doctor appointment with primary doctor on 2/17, and expect to drop Metformin, Lipitor, Wellbutrin Blood pressure is rapidly improving - may drop that 3 drug cocktail, too. Saturday after exercise, it was 102/62. I have had one closet flush, going from size 22 to a snug 18. In about 10 pounds more, I will have another closet flush to 14/16, hoping to get into those sassy size 14 white jeans that are on standby. So, overall, my quality of life is improving......I'm glad I did it!
