  1. My favorite meal is actually a cooking method, not a particular food -- my George Foreman Grill. Everything comes out crispy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. Some of my favorites are salmon, tilapia, cod, chicken, hamburgers, zucchini, broccoli, carrots. Nothing takes more than 10 minutes to cook. It's been a life-saver that's prevented more than one trip out for "fast-food" when I'm tired.

    Work Stress

Thanks people. And I am in therapy. I was banded 02/10/09 and lost 50 lbs so far.

Does anyone have BCBS of Illinois?

The 3month supervised diet is TRUE!!! Thank goodness. I attempted to go through the banding process 2 years ago with bcbs-il, hmo, near impossible. I then switched to PPO and was told to supply very extensive medical/weight history, which I could not do. I got very discouraged and gave up any hopes of being banded until I re-visited the board on a whim and heard about the 3 month supervised diet. I went to Day One Health, and on my first appt 8/3/09 met with the dietician who then scheduled me for two more appt 9/3 and 10/3 with her and the rest is history. Approved 2 1/2 weeks later, pre-op testing 11/23, banding 12/7. Yay!!!:smile2:
  4. I know, I know. It’s been toooo long since I’ve updated. We’ll just blame it on life. The last couple of months of 2010 were a dooozy. I was so glad to kick that year in the arse on the way out the door into 2011. *sheesh* Praying for a much smoother ride this year – though all things considered: at least I got my health on track. shake weight for Christmas. Might seem like a gimmick, but it’s doing something. I feel it! I won’t even talk about the rapidly depleting “fun-bags”. I’m greatful I still have significant cuppage – even if it is on the count of them being so longgggg. By the time I scoop the slinky’s up into one of my FAB new over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders from Lane Bryant, I still have an ample bosom. *cheeze* I have also noticed that my build-a-booty exercises are working better than I expected. That, and a nice proper fitting pair of slacks makes me look Beyonce-bootylicious (even if HERS is fake). Speaking of slacks – I’m in a size 18 now. CANUFRIGGENBELIEVEIT?? At my biggest (in August) I was a sz 22/24. I’m now about 60# down (give or take, depending on the day), and its still somehow lost on me. Yeah, I get that its gonna take awhile for my old brain to catch up to my new body, but I feel like in some weird parallel universe at times. I mean – is “this” really…ME? The last time I saw 250# was over 10 years ago. And now, I’m only 51# away from my first super big goal of getting UNDER 200#. I’m on my way to ONE-derland, baybee!!! Though, I guess me hitting 50# was worth some fanfare – I just kinda…forgot. *shrug* People ask me a lot how I feel. Well, most days, I feel pretty good. I’m pretty much back to “normal”. With the exception of raw veggies/salads (and I’m craving a ceasar salad something fierce). The nausea/vomitting has subsided. And my knees and back/hips are thanking me. I’m more active in terms of walking when I can, takig the steps when I can, dancing when I can, and doing my lil mini-workouts in the bedroom. Really, its been going pretty well. I’m rather proud of myself, even if what I’m doing is minimal at the moment. Protein in the first couple months…my hair started falling out. BIG time. In CLUMPS. My big beautiful fro is no more. *sadface* At first, I went with rockin drawstring pontails for a minute, but I just didn’t feel like…ME. So, on Christmas, I cut my hair off. I figured I rather have short, vibrant, healthy hair.. then longer/bigger patchy hair. So I’m going to keep it short for the next 9 months or so until I can get my protein & everything where it should be. Maintain my fiery crown of red (with the help of Clairol textures-n-tones “Flaming Desire”), however short, and rock on… I will say one last thing – the weightloss surgery was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Rough start aside, it gets easier every day. I’m making much better food choices, which means I still get to enjoy the things I love on occasion (cupcake, anyone? Well, in my case 1/2 a cupcake *lol*). I’m even rather fond of green veggies. Who woulda thunk it!? I do still feel guilty when folks give accolades of “keep up the good work” b/c I don’t feel like I’m doing much to earn that. But, if deciding to actually “do” something about my weight & health (surgery or no)…well I guess that counts for something! Thanks to all who have continued to support, encourage, and drool. Think I’m lookin hawt now? Just *weight* until the summer almost halfway there!

    Safe meds for arthritis?

I too have horrible arthritis in my knees. The only think that can be used is a topical ointment. I have to think on the name. i think it is called voltaren. Do yourself a favor and try some turmeric! It must contain at least 10 mg of bioperine and 95% curcuminoids. You will be amazed at how well a simple spice works for inflammation. I literally went from not being able to walk without severe pain to no pain at all. My sister had surgery for torn miniscus and it works well for her too.

How do i break through a stall?!

I don't have enough proof that this works, but here's what I try when I want to break a stall. High Intensity Training - giving maximum effort for a short period of time. My exercise routine only consists of walking, but at work, I have access to the stairwells. I try to climb 5 flights of stairs as fast as I safety can. My best time has been 1 min 26 seconds. My lungs and legs are burning by the 3rd flight and I take a 10 second break at the 3rd and 4th floor. If you are doing the same exercise routine, eventually your body is going to become more efficient at it. If your weight program consists mainly of free weights, try alternating with weight machines that force your muscles to work in a different way. If you're on the elliptical, pick a program that changes up the one you're used to. Alternate speeds, add in inclines or switch off to a Stair Master for a few exercise sessions. When I used to do the elliptical, I set up my music playlist to have one really fast, motivating song ( like Motley Crew's "Kick Start My Heart") every 4th song, and I would go all out for the duration of that song, then slow back down to my normal pace. Keep up the good work, you'll get there.
  7. If this is all at once yes then I'd be worried but if it is over the course of a day I may not be that worried- He will however the more he heals and the tmore he increases to solid like food have no choice but to slow down- the liquids go down pretty easy for most- he is lucky he doesnt get nauseated or vomit because of eating that fast. If you are monitering his intake that much- is he assuming any responsiblity as well?? You have to remember that each doctor has his/her own post op diet- personally lobster bisk is a very rich soup- at 2 weeks out I could muster about 5 tsp in about 10 minutes- if it continues he may want to talk to the dietician. I personally am addictied to the food network both before and after surgery- I love to cook and I love to learn- I dont know why that would be a problem....

    40 Kilos Or 88 Lbs

I took some clothes to the tailor last week and I asked her to take them in fairly tight....she said, "what if you gain weight again?" I said, well, I don't think that will happen and in fact, I'll probably lost 5 to 10 more.....such a nice feeling. Oh, and I reached the top range of my goal weight yesterday!

    WL rate for over 50

I am 61. So far I've lost 32 pounds since surgery on 2/19. (52 since I started my diet almost a year ago). I feel it is going really slow compared to some people. I try to eat what I'm supposed to (okay, I ate 3 French fries when I went out to dinner with my hubby a few weeks ago) but that's the extent of my cheating. I walk a lot, and will start back at the health club again next week. It gets very discouraging...especially when I see people dropping as much weight in a few weeks as I've done in over 3 months. I know everybody loses weight differently but darn, I wish the pounds would fall off of me. I know I am losing sizes because I've had to go through my closet a few times already. I guess it will take as long as it takes. At least the weight is going the right way.

    Late dumping syndrome?

I am sure this is what I experienced on Friday last week, I'm a sleeve patient 10 weeks out. It was simply awful and I just had to sip water and ride it out. It took about 2-3 hours until I felt somewhat normal again but very washed out.

    What am I doing wrong?

I had surgery on March 10, 2014. I have lost 17 pounds since I started this journey. Part of which was from the liquid diet before the surgery. I can feel restriction, so I don't think I'm overeating, but I've been at a the same weight for a month now. I am very discouraged. I walked two miles yesterday. i just don't get it. i have not got this figured out yet. i had this surgery so I would not have to worry about dieting any longer, yet here I am worrying again about food! I will take any advice offered. Thanks, Mississippi Girl

How often are you supposed to get fills?

you are doing great. I was banded 9-28-09, had my first fill 1 month out and have had fills every month since. I am at 9 cc's in a 10 cc band and still haven't hit that "sweet spot" everyone talks about. I've lost 16 lbs so far so you are doing much better than I am at your weight loss. It is slow and from researching you should lose 1-2 lbs a week so I think you are on track. I just didn't take my band seriously and thought that the weight would just start falling off like it does with gastric bypass patients but it doesn't. Just hang in there and if you are getting hungry soon after you eat, you need a fill. I go about 3-4 hours in between meals. I eat 3 meals a day with 1 extra protein shake as a snack. Good luck to you. Robertsgal68@yahoo.com
  15. Hi all! Always looking for local connections! I live in Arlington but travel! Had VSG 1/10/11, HW 266 SW 260 CW 148 and I'm 5'. I'm 54, live w partner of 34 years (what?!?!) and two kitties. 16. Nothing to freak out about. The endoscope is the easiest procedure I have ever been through. You sleep through the whole thing, takes about 10 minutes. The prep is worse than the scope.

    Emergency Stash of Protein

Jerkey and Protein bars (especially the Oh Yeah! Victory bars) are my goto's when it comes to keeping an emergency stash. I have to keep them at work, cause if I keep them around the house, it's too easy to eat them rather than cooking. :-( Get my free eBook - The Top 10 WLS Fears and How to Kick Their Butt!

    Here again?! Need advice!

I'm considering revision surgery from band to sleeve. I just haven't had much success and I've been banded for 4 years. I initially lost 40lbs but I've gained back 20 and haven't really changed eating habits. I'll be 45 this month. I have some problems with my foot and knee and back that have been preventing me from working out as much as I used to. I can't really do the treadmill anymore, but I use the eliptical and bike 3-4 days per week. Anyway. I'm just really frustrated. I've not had any issues with the band like slippage or reflux, etc. So I'm not sure if revision is going to be the way to go. But I don't know what else to do. I've been playing with the same 5-10 pounds for a year now almost. I stick to 1200 calories a day and that is not helping me lose weight. I eat less and that doesn't work. I eat more and I lose a few but then the next week I gain it back. It seems like no matter what I do nothing works. I go back to the doctor on June 11 so I guess I'll ask about it. It makes me nervous too because my friend who got the sleeve was in and out of the hospital multiple times with a leak and had a feeding tube for about a year and couldn't eat anything. Then again, she had other health problems as well before the surgery (lupus, fibro). I guess we will see..

    Head Hunger

Hi I had vsg April 21st and am down 38 pounds total (from beginning of process not since surgery date). The past two days have been really hard because I have been eating continuously. The first day I thought it was just a weird day but today it has happened again to the point my stomach feels upset but no dumping yet. I bought a bunch of new foods and felt the need to try ALL of them in the past 2 days. I am overeating and I know it!! All of the things I purchased are high in protein but I am eating way past the point of being full and then having to drink fluids to get it down. Great way to start stretching the sleeve at only 8 weeks out I know. Just wondering if anyone else is going though this around the 8 week mark. Thinking it is because of the past 10 weeks of restriction I want to go crazy now but I need to get this in check fast. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  20. I have started the process of getting a sleeve. I have 6 months of physician monitored weight loss, and since I'm a teacher, I'll probably wait until Christmas break to get this done- so I have a bit of time to go. I have a lot of questions, but they are questions my doctor at least treated quite superficially. (I'm going to meet other surgeons because of what seemed to be a very short-term mindset). Here are my big important questions. I'd love to hear what others who are further along in their journey and hopefully some people who are 2 or more years out from surgery. Big Important Question 1: I feel like surgery is the most extreme and kind of like a last chance at taking care of my weight problem. There really isn't anything else to try if I can't make a weight loss stick with surgery. I've lost weight before (sometimes a lot of weight) but it ALWAYS comes back with extra. I'm 28 and maintaining for life is a serious commitment- I've been lucky in the past if I can maintain a weight loss for more than 6 months. Can the sleeve help me when it comes to maintenance? For those of you who have had long-term success with any weight loss surgery, what was it that worked to help you stay healthy long-term? Big Important Question 2: I don't only eat when I'm hungry. I eat sometimes out of habit (when watching tv or because its 'dinner time'). I also eat when I get stressed out or emotional (especially when I'm disappointed or frustrated). With those kinds of triggers for eating, will having surgery still be able to help me? Is that something that I have to stop completely before I would be likely to have a good long-term outcome? Does the process leading up to surgery or the surgery itself help you to really change so that you will still have the weight off 2 or 5 or 10 years down the road? Please share what you felt like going into surgery and what you've learned along the way. Thank you!
  21. 10 days to go until the dreaded 23 hour trip to San Diego (and on to Mexicali). Today I started thinking about some of the things I'm really looking forward to after surgery: - Smaller boobies! I've been packing double Gs around for far too long. There is nothing cute or sexy about these big mamas or the ugly bras that cover them. There are 2 styles of bras at Nordstrom that can handle the job and neither of them are cute. Can't wait to burn them! - Seeing results of my workouts at the gym. I'm strong, freakishly strong, and love lifting weights and doing crossfit. I know I have some hardcore muscles underneath the layers of fat and I can't wait to be able to see them! Plus now I feel like a fraud because I work out but don't get any smaller... - Being able to feel comfortable in short sleeves or (gasp!) tank tops. I live on a tropical island and wear long sleeves every day. It sucks. - Wearing a dress and feeling girly. Haven't worn a dress/skirt since about 2004, the last time I was fit and healthy. Can't remember what it's like to feel feminine. - Scuba diving and paddle boarding at a normal weight. It's gonna feel great! It's gonna be so much easier! Two hobbies that I love haven't been much fun lately. I can't wait til it's fun again! - Being more comfortable at the beach. Let's face it: there's nothing relaxing about walking around at the beach at my weight. The only thing that saves me is that the majority of the local population is very overweight as well so I blend in. But still. -Enjoying physical activity again. Bye bye sore feet and back! Hello, long lost hobbies! - Dating. It's been a long, long, long time. I've never been comfortable in my skin since gaining weight and I've become a hermit. I miss men! How about you? What are you looking forward to after surgery?
  22. Honeyyyyy..... First of all.... the energy level less than two months out will be thru the roof! I used to be a couch potato, now I jog every day! EVERY DAY!!!!! I haven't said "I'm tired" in 3 months (I'm 4 months post op). Second, the depression thing....? What is that all about?? ZERO depression, I haven't been THIS happy in over 30 years. Once you see that scale go down down down down and you see the figure you used to have or have always wanted to have, there is zero depression, just a lot of happiness and a positive outlook on life! Third, food is important to you now, the moment the weight starts to go down so fast and you feel amazingly terrific and could eat anything you want and you get full right away you will get that food obsession out of your head. To ME, there is NOT one single reason if you're overweight and not loving yourself and not loving how you feel to not get weight loss surgery. It's really the best tool to combat obesity and to gain self-esteem and most importantly to be HEALTHY!!! I'm speaking to you like I speak to my close friends who have thought about surgery. Don't delay it, get it done, there is NOT one reason why not do it. It's the best thing, it's amazing to feel good again and energized and healthy! My ONLY regret is not having it done when I first thought of doing it 10 years ago but better late than never. Good luck to you!
  23. The pain is intense whenever I move, not gonna lie. I have ice on my side and crotch right now. And yesterday after surgery I had to go to the ER because of extreme bleeding from my rear incision. Fortunately my doctor met me there, checked everything, and assured me it was normal to have leakage especially in the first few days even though I have drains. It has subsided since then but is not completely done. But I had my binder off for the first time and I cried with joy at the sight of my flat stomach and the fact that I could see my hooha without lifting up a pile of fat or skin. I will take the pain for a lifetime of flat tummy any day! Time for my meds! Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. I was sleeved on June 24. I'm still on week one of liquid diet. Already down 10 pounds. Any advice
