    Clothing After Surgery

Starting at 265, my 22/24 and 1 or 2X clothes were fitting me "tightly" in places. Then I lost 15 pounds on the pre-op diet, which I could always lose in the past but never get past on the scale. By then my clothes were fitting me the way they should have fit me. I remember cleaning out my closet 6 weeks after surgery and got rid of half my closet. I still have a pile of nice clothes I need to take pictures of and sell, including a nice black interview suit worn once. I was about 235-240 then and was wearing some 18's a little snug. By 8 weeks out, the 18's fit like they should and I went down in bra size. By 11 weeks out, the 18's were sad and people I barely knew told me to stop wearing the 1X tops because it looked like I was "wearing another person's wardrobe." Now, at almost 13 weeks I'm wearing a solid 16 pants (even some 14 stretch work pants) and either a size M-L top. The first 6 weeks seeing the weight come off but not truly dropping in clothes was frustrating, it just take a little longer to catch up. It's funny now how I'll buy a pair of pants and remember them as "tighter than I'd like" to only find two weeks later already becoming looser than I'd like!!!
  2. Most folks here will tell you that it is okay, it was one slip and you just pick up and move on. While this is true mostly, I think that you really have to get very clear with your relationship with eating and food. The operation is on your stomach, not on your brain. Any bad habits like binge eating or stress eating will not magically go away. I understand that you feel bad, and that's a good step, but please don't feel that the sleeve will make these things magically disappear. You can easily eat around the sleeve and stop losing or even gain weight. I think, based on your post, that you basically understand that. But working out at the gym or the pool doesn't offset a consumption of calories based on processed carbohydrates and fat. Take the next four days and really do some introspective thinking about why you have gotten to this point. Make a list of triggers, be it food or social situations that make you feel the need to run to food for comfort. Study that list, keep it with you and make changes to it as you need. The road to sucess post WLS is full of pot holes. It is easy to dismiss a slip up every now and again, but one slip should just be that a slip. On going, understanding yourself and your eating habits will go along way in insuring the success that you seek. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

    water aerobics?

I do water aerobics for an hour a week. It's a good work out, but I do it in addition to walking, weight lifting, Zumba and other things. It's good on a "cool down" day.

    Getting banded June 23!

Hi Maria I have jumped through all the hoops now, except the last pre-op tests which won't be until the last few weeks before surgery. I was with the nutrtionist for a short while before I knew we were not on the same page. She seemed to have some issues with fat people. So I said what I knew she wanted to hear and turned to other sources for my nutritional education. This site is an awsome source of information. I haven't tried eating w/o drinking during my meals; I am using all my will power to stay on my current eating program. I have a fatty liver and if I don't drop a significant amount of weight (to shrink my liver) I may have to have the full open surgery instead of laproscopic. My advice? Do what the experts advise you and don't listen to what people say works for them if it is contrary to what your doctor advises. I will enjoy sharing this adventure with you!

    Why am I sabotaging myself?

You always read about how other people in your life sabotage your weight loss efforts but what about yourself? My husband just recently brought to my attention how I've slowed down my workout regime. Ever since I started my journey to have the Lap-Band surgery I've been trying to be more aware of how I am eating and stepping up my workouts. I was doing good until I went into the surgeon's office and found out that I met his requirements for surgery and got my date. Since then I really haven't worked out and when I do I just go at a turtle's pace. This isn't like me. I used to be drenched in sweat when I came from working out now I barely break one. Today I stepped up my workout and thought my legs were going to fall off. This didn't happen a week ago. I'm seriously thinking that maybe since I met my surgeon's goal for my surgery I just thought I didn't have to do anything else. I want to lose as much weight as I can Pre-banded that way I'll already be in losing mode by the time I get banded. I know I can do it I just need to focus on the ultimate goal and that is to get down to a healthier weight and feel sexy again. My confidence is shot even though I do try to bring it back up but it's hard. Oh man it's hard. He's tired of seeing me wallow in self pity and frankly I am too. I need to keep a positive attitude for the future and not look to him or anyone else to motivate me. I and me alone can only do what is necessary to ensure that I am successful with the band. Today is a new day and I know I can do it. I've just got to keep my eye on the prize and motivate myself everyday to work towards that prize. So far I've lost 20 lbs since starting in May. I know I can lose more. Matter of fact I'm going to jump on the elliptical after work. I just put some new movies/TV shows on my ipod so it's time to catch up on The Boondocks!
  6. Do you lose weight because of the surgery? Like did you notice anything different the day of the surgery and the day after? I guess I'm trying to prepare myself for questions that may be asked at work if there is significant change.

  8. After reading an informative and humorous post from another member who discovered a problem with his daily diet, I took stock of my situation. My weight loss has slowed significantly again over the past couple of weeks. At first I thought it was just another stall, but after a look back I realized that my diet had changed and that I was likely sabotaging my own weight loss. Over the past couple of weeks I've slowly allowed some calorie dense snack foods to creep back into my diet. Mostly nuts but also some pita chips and pretzel chips which were in the house with hummus as a snack for when some guests were here. I haven't sat down and eaten a bag of chips or a bowl of nuts, but I have found myself grabbing a few almonds here and there or a handful of pita chips as I walk between the kitchen and home office. Working at home yesterday I realized that every time I came through the kitchen for a glass of Water or a restroom trip I was stopping to grab a handful of something to snack on. After thinking about it and doing a little math I realized I was probably adding 200 to 300 extra calories a day with this stuff, and hadn't been accounting for those calories in my eating program. That may not seem like a lot to a regular person, but to a sleever who is trying to maintain 900-1000 calories per day, these calories are significant and impactful. Just passing along my experience for those who may also be facing challenges in losing at the rate they want. This made me remember that the sleeve isn't magic, it is a tool that we have to use correctly to attain our goals. And that every calorie counts.
  9. 25 days ago on July 7th on morning of surgery i weighed in at 428.8 pounds. As of this morning i am 399.8 (After I Ate Breakfast). Everyone consider 50 or 100 pounds a big milestone for them..... but although i only lost 29 pounds this is huge for me, mentally that is. Mentally because me being over 400 pounds was the deciding factor of me getting the surgery. For the past 3 years i was up and down between 400-430 and got as high as 454 and got as low as 409 before but always gained it back. At the time i entered the 400s i was only 18 (Way Too Young) so a decision had to be made to save my life and better my life and so far its the best decision i made. Although we all have more restraint with the way our stomachs are changed, we still have to have that same discipline. Still have to have to have the same discipline to get up and move everyday and go work out and have the discipline to not eat this and eat that instead. We still have to do the same stuff that people who didn't have the surgery have to do. So if a so called friend-family member every tell you that you took the easy way out or you are too lazy to lose it on your own just ignore them, or do what i did and cut them off, on this journey you don't need that negative energy around you, you need positive vibes and people that will motivate you. 10. Today I stepped on the scale and it showed I lost some weight. Instead of being excited my mind instantly thought okay I can eat this fatty food for lunch. WHAT! My mind instantly wanted to cheat all because the scale was whispering, you lost some more weight. It is like wrestling with the devil. I won't reach my goals if I eat every time the scale shows I'm down--I will just yo yo. Repeating to myself--Be Strong and Ignore the Scale. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16
  11. Itsme!

    I know

I too am about 14 pounds down, sleeved 5/1 so not quite a month. I've been stalled for the last week - actually gaining 2 pounds :/ I'm not getting (too) discouraged. I lost almost 50 pre surgery so really I'm almost half way to goal! I know for sure i don't eat enough to maintain or gain, so I just need my body to catch up and the scale to start moving again and I will be a happier camper.

Wow, I had not thought of it in terms of a resolution, but I, too, will reach my goal weight in 2016. I am coming off of a one-year stall. I have slightly over 50 pounds to lose to get to my desired goal weight. I recommitted recently and I am working with someone daily. She told me that I will achieve that goal. So 2016 it is!
  14. I WISH I would feel less restriction and I'm 9+ months out!!! I don't get what my problem is- Last night I ate small slices of steak, and after about 3 maybe 4 ounces I thought I was going to possibly rupture my esophagus-the pain was horrible and my mouth filled up with saliva like right before one is about to vomit. I was really shaken by the experience which lasted about 15 minutes then, thank God, subsided. Today, I could hardly eat even soft warm cereal (had to throw out half of it) Later I had a teaspoon of tuna, followed by 2 tortilla chips, chewed well and then a Greek blueberry yogurt. Three quarters of the way through the yogurt I felt like my esophagus would explode and I stood up in pain. How much longer can I take this? I'm 10 lbs away from goal (135)-at this rate I'll keep losing weight!!! I'm so freaked out about this already. By now I would figure I'd be able to at LEAST feel comfortable eating small portions but instead even the small stuff is giving me pain. WHEN DOES It get BETTER? My bougie is a 40 for goodness sake!
  15. When checking out a local supplement store today I asked the owner if they carried any supplements for bariatric patients and he proceeded to tell me how I would regret the surgery ( I am scheduled for 11-26 ) and that I would be facing serious medical reprocussions in the future as I age and get older due to insufficient nutritional support and other various issues that weight loss surgery patients incur as they age...he stated that he felt compelled to ask me to reconsider the surgery and try again to get help from professionals such as a nutritionist and other scientifically based programs for weight loss. When I told him that I was going to have the surgery and I respected his opinion but my mind was made up, he continued to plead with me as if he was trying to save my life! I even felt raddled enough to reconsider for a brief second..I was just wondering if anyone has read any research on bariatric patients as they age. I am still having the surgery, just thought maybe someone out there might have come across this subject.
  16. Hello everyone. I haven't posted for a while. I hope you are all doing okay. I am at the stage post op where I can have all textures of foods. Problem is I don't really have a specific plan to follow, and it is difficult to stick to the diet when there aren't specific instructions. I've found that now that I can eat, I want to eat everything. Being hungry for the 3 weeks ppre-op, and then the past 4 weeks post op was difficult, and I think now that I am able to eat anything, I want EVERYTHING. I did not do well during the mushies stage, and in fact, I had a lot of high calorie puddings and yogurts. I was so hungry and after feeling deprived, my brain kept telling me that it was okay to eat. Anyway, I need to get recommitted and get started losing weight. It has been 10 days now since my 2nd surgery (unrelated but I have 6 inch incision in my abdomen and a 2.5 inch one in my back, and the recovery hasn't been easy). 2 surgeries within a month was a bit much for me and I haven't had the energy to fight through the dieting. So, I need to get completely back on track. What kinds of menus are you guys having. I need suggestions. Thanks, Cindy
  17. I have been wondering the same thing and have the same response from my drs. office. They want me to focus on getting in the Protein and Water and nutritious food and not worry about the calories. However, I have had a day here and there where I was at 1300+. I have had several at the 1100 range. I went on a website and put in my age, height and activity level. It gave me the calories needed to maintain weight, lose weight (1-2 lbs/day) and to lose weight rapidly (2+ lbs/wk). I can't find that website right now or I would put the link here. However, it gave me a good target to shoot for. I think the further out we are and the more we can tolerate, it becomes increasingly important to make smart food choices. There are many choices that I have that are good for me. Some are higher in calories. If I choose a lot of cheese and nut Snacks, I might choose to end my day with an 80 calorie greek yogurt rather than Peanut Butter. I hope this makes sense. I am 5' 4" and feel I need to stay below 1300 to continue to lose 2 lbs a week with a light activity level. I am not exercising as much as some. I had a complicated sinus surgery procedure a couple weeks ago and my dr. does not want me straining, lifting, breathing heavy (as with cardio), etc. for a couple more weeks.
  18. start with the food diary. I always thought I was eating much less. Weight loss is calories in vs calories out, sleeve or not.
  19. Today marks two years since my gastric sleeve surgery. It seems like only yesterday I was posting about my one year surgiversary! I started this journey at 320 lbs. At one year out I was down 135 lbs, weighing 185. Three months later I found out I was pregnant! Long story short, my new baby daughter is 2.5 weeks old and she is just lovely! I gained 20 lbs during my pregnancy, and at 2.5 weeks after having her I'm already back down to my pre-pregnancy weight. Guess it was all baby and Water weight! So at 2 years out I am still down 135 lbs weighing 185. My goal this year is to lose the last 15 or so lbs. It would be amazing to get a tummy tuck at some point. Especially after having a baby, I've got a bit of loose skin. It's amazing what this surgery has done for my life. I make healthier eating choices as second nature now. I have not had soda in two years (and don't miss it!) I'd say my tummy can fit around a cup or so of food before I start getting full. Sometimes I can fit more, sometimes not. It depends on how long it's been since I've eaten. Thanks for reading. I still love my sleeve after two years and have zero regrets. Let me know if any questions!
  20. 1) 45 lb. in 3.5 months is actually a good weight loss especially with a band. 2) Esophageal stacking is bad news and can lead to bad health problems. Personally, if I had it, I would be asking about a revision to another WLS, not going to see a shrink. (Though maybe your surgeon wants you to go for other reasons?) 3) Mini-bypass is WORSE NEWS. The surgery is dangerous and people gain their weight back. The American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons does not include mini-bypass in their list of viable procedures and reputable docs don't do this procedure. But there are other WLS types you can revise to such as the regular bypass, the sleeve and the duodenal switch. Since you have done so well with the band, I would consider a restriction-only surgery like the sleeve over something with malabsorption like bypass or the switch. But those others are viable options too. Here's a chart that explains the differences: Weight-Loss Surgeries Compared
  21. Like many of you out there I am one out of 10 women out there with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, AKA PCOS. For me lapband surgery was a no brainer but before I go into that I want to talk about what led me to my decision. I was fist diagnosed with PCOS in 2004. From 2004 to 2011 I was taking high doses of metformin and spirnolactone. This was to assist with my hormonal imbalance and to assist with monthly menstruation. In late 2011 I developed health problems related to the medication I was taking. So I decided to go on an organic diet, limit my calories and up my exercise. I signed up for my first 1/2 marathon with a friend and began doing yoga a couple of times a week. I lost little to no weight. So I decided to see a natural doctor and starting taking herbs to assist with my ailments. After a year of my efforts the symptoms of my PCOS were not reversing but in fact getting worse. Although I was exercising I managed to gain 15 additional pounds as well as excess belly weight. I finally decided to make the decision to have lap band surgery. I want to have children one day and found the lap band to be less evasive and also be at a low risk for any health issues. I have been battling PCOS for so long that I was tired of trying so hard to see no benefits in return. I did some research on the lap band and women with PCOS and found it to be successful for them, in hopes it would in turn be successful for me. Sometimes it is hard to battle the bulge alone especially when your body is working against you. I wanted to create a blog where I could inspire women to keep moving forward and to not give up on their goals of weight loss and possible pregnancy. I was hoping to hear from other women and their success stories. So here is to 2013, let's make it memorable with stories and pictures and show it is possible to overcome PCOS. For more information on PCOS please visit: http://www.pcosfound...on.org/ http://women.webmd.c...-topic-overview
  22. thank you - it's all relative I guess. I weigh in once a week to check my weight progress but I couldn't do it every day because I'd go crazy:) I am now wearing an xl in old navy which is a huge nsv for me because when I got sleeved - I didn't fit into any thing there. . Small goals are helping me along the journey.

    Thinking About Gastric Sleeve

I was sleeved July 2017 and weighed 233lbs then. I had been through every diet known to google and I would lose a bit of weight, plateau then gain the weight back and more. I am a health professional myself and know that every surgery has risks. However, there has been a lot of research and improvements done such that bariatric surgery is now a very safe procedure. Complications still happen to some but the risks have been significantly lowered over the years. I am one of those people who had zero complications. The surgery is one of the best decisions I made for myself and my health. I have lost close to 60lbs now, eat well and exercise regularly. I am now more positive, confident and generally relaxed. Hope you make the right decision for yourself and your health.

    Thinking About Gastric Sleeve

Everyone has to weigh the benefits vs risks and decide for themselves. Good for you for digging in and doing that work. Wish you the best no matter what you decide. it'a so close

Today was my best day since I started my protein shakes, this is day 5. It may because I was not in the house I hung out with my sister. We spent a lot of time in the stores so that kept my mind pretty occupied. I did so good while we were out. I did not feel tempted to eat anything I made sure I had my protein shake before I left the house. I doubled up knowing that I was going to be out for most of the day and I had my Crystal Light with me. I can not believe that my date is so close in 24 hours I will at Providence Hospital having my Lap-band!! It has taken me almost 8 years to finally mentally take a look at myself and say it is time. I have been to so many seminars I read so many stories on here that there is really not much that I don't know about having band other than actually having it. I do sometimes wish that I would have it done right after my son was born almost 8 years ago,but I hesitated because I wanted to have another child even though they say you can still have a baby with the band at that time I just wasn't sure. Then there was last year when I thought I was ready I wasn't. So here I am ready, so ready to start a new chapter in my life. when I really think about what has taken me so long other than the mental part it was people who have been in my life telling me I look like I lost weight when I knew I had gained and then it was those telling me you are so tall were is all that weight.Well I know were it is hiding underneath my clothes LOL. I can't believe I am blogging I have never done this before and I am sure some you are saying yea we can tell because you are all over the place LOL. I like it it's better than writing in a journal for me until Tom. Peace and blessings
