    Chewing gum after surgery

    That's a question for your surgery team, but if you don't like their answer (or don't get one), you can try it and see how it goes. I've read that it does introduce more air into your stomach. Or maybe someone here will answer with their experience. I am only three weeks out, and I can't chew gum do to dental work. Hope you get an answer!

Had my first appointment with the surgeon and dietitian on Tuesday but ive only just thought of this question.. ill end up asking them at some point anyway but wanted to get opinions here first. Might be a stupid question but after the surgery, what temperature should my fluids be? I love ice cold water in the summer(coming up to summer here in Australia now) but also love my tea hot. Did anyone have any pain or discomfort having colder or warmer liquids? What was your experience with different temperature liquids in the first few weeks post op? Did you just go for room temperature liquids to be on the safe side?🤔

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

    I had surgery March 12th and have only lost 43 pounds. I’ve been stalled since the end of July and hope I can finally reach a 50 lb loss or more for the holidays 😩.
  4. Real food definitely felt different at first. I got over mourning the loss to eat a big volume. Once the weight loss kicks in I started to enjoy the ability to control my portions more than the desire to eat large portions. I also try to figure out healthy substitutes for things I miss. 20 lbs in 4 weeks is amazing.. it will really start to add up if you stay focused and on track. Keep strong!
  5. I would talk with your team. I also know I wasn’t given the ok to eat any of that stuff until 7 weeks out, and only after getting my protein in first. I got those symptoms after 2 bites of “protein ice cream.” It was classic dumping. It could have been the fat or the sugar, either way it’s not something I want to repeat. Talk with your team!
  6. That is fantastic to hear!! I have very recently started eating all real food and I am definitely seeing and feeling the difference now!! It ALMOST felt like I didn't even have surgery until I started real food! I'm currently mourning the loss of my ability to "tear up" delicious food!! 😆 LOL but I'm down 20 in 4 weeks and hoping to either sustain that pace or maybe pick it up a little! So far I'm incredibly happy with my decision to get this surgery!! Thanks for sharing your inspiring experience!! 😊
  7. I’ve tried researching this myself but so much of the advice assumes you’re “cheating” and dealing with dumping syndrome. Has anyone else experienced EXTREME dizziness, flushing or cold sweats, and nausea right after eating a few bites or small meal? I’m 22 days post-op and for the last week or so I’ll have these absolutely horrible bouts right after I start or finish eating. It’s not after every meal and it seems totally unrelated to sugar/carbs/protein/fiber or any other obvious nutritional element. Half an hour ago I got two bites into one of those often recommended ricotta bakes and it hit me. At lunch today I had a tiny serving of mashed avocado and hummus and it happened within like 2 minutes of finishing. It happened after a coconut milk based yogurt for breakfast on Monday. This isn’t happening any other time - it’s right after some but not all foods but there isn’t an obvious pattern to what foods or times of day. That makes me think it’s also not dehydration because you’d think that would impact me other times, right? It shouldn’t just be when something hits my stomach? I’d be concerned about a leak but I don’t have a fever or swelling or pain in the area either. I’m stumped!

    Glad to hear you are back on track toward reaching your goal. Thank you for sharing your challenges with us. The stalls, ups and downs & difficult aspects of bariatric surgery are something that many, if not all of us, will face at one point.     Yes, I was nervous about everything until I woke up from surgery. And even now, three weeks post-op, I'm still nervous, but about different things. It's normal (especially if you're an anxious person by nature, or have clinical anxiety).

    Hi everyone! I start my two-week liquid diet on Oct 19 and Surgery is on November 3. I am just now getting all the results of my bloodwork and it is nervewrecking. Did anyone else get nervous while your results were coming in?

    Post-op Anxiety

    I'm 3 years out, and over 2 years in maintenance. Like some above, I weigh myself every morning (to make sure i'm not leaning to far above or below my happy weight range); I track everything I eat (to keep eye on caloric intake), get some exercise in (run min 5K 2-3 times a week, plus other random activities here and there: dancing, hiking, swimming). I've figured out that at my current activity level, i can maintain my current weight at around 1800 cals a day. Other random things I do that I *think* contribute to MY maintenance (or could just be habit now and may not actually be making a lick of difference, lol): I try to keep bread, rice, pasta intake low. I don't completely avoid them, but they don't have main billing in my diet, or even supporting cast. More like nameless extras with non-speaking roles, lol I make it a point to never eat to full. I may not always succeed, but I try. I wear tight pants. Don't laugh, but having tight pants on when I go out for dinner helps to ensure that I won't overeat to over-fullness, when it's easier to do so cuz I'm just sitting around a table for hours with food, you know? I always share desserts (or get a mini/micro one) cuz I know dessert is my downfall. I don't eat before noon if I can help it. If my weight goes above my happy weight range, I cut some calories until I until I'm at the bottom of said range (luckily this hasn't happened in over a year...knock on wood) I do my running in the morning so its done and i don't get a chance to procrastinate throughout the day. That's all i can think of at the moment, but I'm sure there are a whole bunch of other things I do....

    Sex drive

    I haven't had a sex drive in about 6-7 years. I'm only 3 weeks out from surgery but I have lost 65 lbs since preparing for surgery. People said it would get better with losing weight, but it hasn't improved at all. I asked my gyn about it a few years ago and she said it was my age (I was about 38-39 at the time). I was sort of shocked, since I know older women can still enjoy sex. Sex is also painful for me. I'd eventually like to date again (haven't dated since 2015), but I feel like this is a big barrier.

    Chickpea "Pasta"

    That's why I weigh everything - then it doesn't matter how much the "contents may settle during shipping". Since I'm just 3 weeks from surgery, most surgery centers tell you to do volume, but my center just said "no one can tell you how much to eat". So I'm weighing everything so I can figure out the protein.

    I have never suffered in my career due to my weight. I make a great salary and have never had trouble going from one company to another when I felt like the team I was on (or the manager) was just no longer a good fit. And I would always get a raise when I did that. I'm extremely well suited to my career and it's very demanding. Prior to COVID, I flew 2-5 flights a week to cities all over the US working on cancer trials. Since COVID started, it's been a slower pace with less travel, but I still make the same salary. For me, I always had confidence in myself as an employee and a person. I had no confidence in dating or sports, but to me, those were more about my weight. To me, my ability to be a good employee is about my ability to communicate, solve problems, and be dedicated. I'm hoping that losing weight will help me have more energy for the short nights and long days on the road and when I travel for fun. Also, I might eventually like to date again... or not.

    Hi, I’m new here

    Most insurance companies require that your BMI be higher than 40, or 35 with co-morbidities like diabetes or sleep apnea ... and you often have to be able to show you can lose some weight, so losing weight to get to a BMI of 60 wouldn't disqualify you at all. Also, the surgery center probably has an insurance specialist who knows what your particular insurance company requires and can help you set up all the appointments and everything else. I had 4 months of nutrition classes required by insurance, so I decided to live a bit like I would live after surgery during that time. I did lower carb and higher protein and lost about 50 lbs prior to surgery. Of course, my problem was that I got to the point where my BMI was going to be too low for surgery, so I started eating junk again (throwing food funerals!) when I got closer to the pre-op "shrink the liver" diet. My BMI was about 40 or 41 day of surgery, down from 49 when I called the surgeon and started the program. Any weight you can lose now is weight you will not have to lose after surgery. I found that will higher protein, lower carbs, and low added sugars (I still ate fruit and occasionally small amounts of ice cream), I was less hungry and had fewer cravings. I'm actually more hungry now after surgery, which sucks because I can barely eat anything (although I'm only 3 weeks out and most people say they are not hungry).
  18. I'm only three weeks out and I don't know how to do those snazzy pictures, but I'd say most of my calories are still coming from shakes. Second, tuna fish, third, refried beans, fourth cheddar cheese that I mix with beans and eggs. I'll have to look at how to do those graphs! I mostly use the app on my phone, so I will have to try it on my computer again. The only junk food I've had since surgery was a sugar free pudding. It's easy to be good this soon out; I'm hungry but I can only eat a little bit at once and I have very little food in the house.
  19. That’s a cool feature. Didn’t even know that existed! I’m only 7 weeks out today so my top 10 actually only consists of protein shakes, yoghurt, cheese, salmon and eggs, lol. I do eat a lot of different things, but not every day, and like your salads, they’re low kcal and therefore don’t make it to the top 10.

    Encouragement needed

    The other posters are right, it gets better and this all sounds normal. The first week after surgery, it seems some people lose a lot and others not as much. You will see results soon. The water, protein & vitamins may be hard to get in the first few weeks, just aim to reach your goals the best you can. Hang in there, you got this! 👍

    June Surgeries

    Before I had surgery I heard about so many people not being hungry and was fully expecting that to be the case for me. Imagine my surprise when I started hearing my belly growl and start to feel light headed because I WAS hungry within a couple weeks of surgery! I have found that my hunger is much more manageable now. I do start to feel hungry about 3 hours after I eat, but, find that if I get distracted or busy by something it's very easy to put off eating. I try to be very diligent about ensuring I eat every 3-4 hours/5 meals a day (per my program) because I eat so little at each meal it's hard to hit my protein goals if I don't eat when I'm supposed to. I think it's different for everyone, so, don't be worried if your experience isn't exactly the same as others.

    Encouragement needed

    I am almost 7 months post op and my pouch (lovingly named Miserable Mildred) gurgles all the time. She gurgles so much that my team at work asks how Mildred is feeling today. 😂 I promise it gets better. I had pain up until the day before I went back to work. (3 weeks post op) I was told by my surgeon I should not have been in pain. Drinking was never a problem, but I did grow intolerant to certain textures for a while. Just keep trying and sipping. It gets better.

    June Surgeries

    I really just started being hungry in the last week or two. I had the surgery on 8/31/21 and went a few weeks with little hunger. Now, I could eat every hour on the hour if I followed my hunger feelings. I think it is hunger, but not 100% sure from reading all these posts who insist it is not hunger....not sure what it is but it feels like I am hungry. I try drinking water but it does not make the feeling go away.

    June Surgeries

    I just had surgery 3 weeks ago and I'm hungry all the time, although I can't eat very much at once. Has your hunger settled down? Everyone always talked about not being hungry after surgery and then they just tell me I'm not really hungry!
  25. I'm a week out from go-time! Today starts the all-liquids phase of my pre-op and about a month of being liquidy total. This afternoon is my last appointment with my surgeon before the main event. Looking forward to it!
