Daily calories one month p/o from RNY?
DaisyAndSunshine replied to ladygodiva's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, I am also 1 month post-Op and average around about similar numbers. Between 750 to 850ish. I do get about 75 to 80ish protein (60 to 80 is my program requirement). So I am good on that front. If you run short of protein try skyr (or ice landing) yogurt. 2/3rd cup has about 20 grams of protein. That and may be protein powder (if you're allowed) I am sure it's easy peash to get enough protein in. If no protein powder, do 1 cup of skyr daily (split) and you'll have 30 grams right there and then. -

I started mushies on Friday and this weekend I ate canned venison, pizza, broiled cod, cheese and venison sausage. I don't think of these as mushies. Had no problems eating them though. I drank 5 glasses of wine on Saturday night at party with past co-workers. I know that wasn't smart. Also cals are way up to about 1400 day. Is this acceptable? What are mushies? Could I have damaged anything? I don't think so, and feel good. What should one be consuming 2 weeks after surgery? As far as streghting my pouch shouldn't I have thrown up because of over stuffing? Did I over stuff? Any advice please Bearbelly

I usually have the same breakfast every day. Cottage cheese and lite canned fruit, or yogurt and lite canned fruit. Why PB now? I am 11 weeks out. Is it common to PB so long after eating?
-
I eat cereal quite frequently for breakfast and sometimes as a snack at night time. I buy the Kashi GoLean Crunch (9gr protein), or the regular GoLean (10gr protein) and use 1/2 or less of an Atkins Vanilla protein shake for the milk which adds another 7gr protein. A serving of this cereal according to the box is a whole cup, and you don't find that very often. I just let it soak a bit, and there's not much liquid left in the bowl. I also use the shakes for the liquid in the quaker high protein oatmeal. I do find that it doesn't hold me quite as long as a more substantial breakfast would, but I don't have any trouble making it to lunch time. I couldn't even finish my whole cup this morning, it is very filling, my 2yo finished it off for me. You can put this stuff on a lot of things, like mixed into yogurt or even cottage cheese.

Let me hear what your post op diet was like from week to week....
Makulafamy replied to hopeful41411's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It was about 6 days post-op until I felt any hunger at all. I was banded on Jan.27th, and was supposed to be on clear liquids for 2 weeks. I made it about 6 days. I moved myself to full liquids (or at least cream soups) after that. When I met with my doc on the 7th day, he said that was fine. I am supposed to be on full liquids until tomorrow and then I can go to mushies and progress to soft. I am on mushies and soft stuff now. You will find that doctors orders vary drastically. You just have to know whats right for you and of course talk it over with your doc or clinical staff. Because I dont have a restriction yet, my meals dont really give me a full feeling. I just have to stop and ask myself if I am hungry. If the answer is no, I stop. Today for bfast I had half a container of lite strawberry yogurt with some grapenuts sprinkled on it. I had SF strawberry applesauce for a snack, and had taco bell refried Beans for lunch. Tonight I am going to have my first grilled chicken breast since before the preop diet. I am so excited! -
Why is my band so picky?
TQUAD64 replied to teacherica's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cookies, ice-cream, liquid Soups (no solids), yogurt, chips (my favorite chips), milk-shakes, mochas/lattes depending what is in them. Some slider foods are good, such as yougurt, but others are not and usually have high calories such as candy bars. You know melts in your mouth and slides right down. -
Should I be sampling protein powders now, pre-op? I'm really interested in UN-flavored....are they really un-flavored? I've been experimenting with smoothies. I.E. Greek yogurt (high in protein) with a banana, pineapple or SF Hershey's syrup, maybe some coconut or vanilla extract. I've come up with some pretty good ones. Will adding the powder change them, that is my question! Advice is welcome!!! (any brands recommended? what's best and what is considered low in sugar; low in carbs?) Thank you in advance!

2nd week munches
lisa0522 replied to joanne@millett3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I was also banded 5/14. I'm on the 2 week full liquid diet, its very difficult as I'm now feeling better and feel hungry. My husband made spaghetti last night for kids . . . I strained the ragu, added a bit of sugar and parmesan powder and slowly spooned about 1/4 cup. It helped me feel like I was eating again . . . but that's also likely high in sodium. I am allowed yogurt (without fruit pieces or seeds), puddings (you can add Protein powder and a little cool whip). Butterball chicken broth really is delicious, but again, probably high in sodium. Is anyone newly banded having trouble keeping liquids to 1/2 cup in 1/2 hour consumption rate?? I sure am! I hope that as long as I'm still trying to take it slow & tolerating it well, I'll be fine. Monday is puree day for those of us done on 5/14. Start planning your menus, maybe you'll feel like you're getting closer!! -Lisa -
Bitter taste in my mouth (literally)
SkinnyKathy posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a little over two weeks post-op and I have recently started on mushies. I have been following the diet pretty closely, eating mostly hummus, yogurt, cottage cheese, soup, and protein shakes. The last few days I was wondering if all my food was going bad because it seemed like everything I was eating had a bitter taste, but now I realize that the bitter taste is in my mouth, not my food. Has anyone else experienced this? Also, I know this is "bandster hell" time, and I don't have much if any restriction left, but I have not lost any weight in the last week in spite of the fact that I am eating much less than I used to and very little carbs. I quickly dropped about 10 pounds in the first week and then nothing this week. UUURRG! I already have a fill scheduled for four weeks post-op which is the earliest I can get a fill. -
Anyone getting banded on 20th Nov. by Dr. Watson?
Fanny Adams replied to perthchick's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have Dr Watson too, so I guess he would have given me the same dietary advice. This is what I ate in the post-op stages: Days 1 to 3 - Clear liquids juice and/or diet jelly in the mornings, clear chicken, beef or vegetable broth/consomme for lunch & dinner, more jelly for dessert Days 4 to 10 - Full Liquids All of the above plus custards, yogurts, various creamed Soups. I also got a lot of chunky style soups and blended them to get the chunks out. Another fav was banana smoothies made with 0% skim milk and a teaspoon of honey. Skim milk is gross on its own but was fine in the smoothies. Days 11 to 21 - Mushies: All of the above plus porridges for Breakfast (all the nummy fruit ones from Uncle Toby's), stewed fruits (eg apples, plums), various chunky style soups, cottage/ricotta cheeses, scrambled eggs & omelettes, tuna mixed with fat free mayo, tuna morney, mashed potatoes, sweet potato, pumpkin and other soft mashed veges. Days 21 to 28 - Soft foods: All of the above plus various slow-cooked casseroles, bolognaise sauce, steamed veges, basically any "wet" dish". Day 29+ - Normal food! -

9 days post surgery - Ended up in ER today!
LollyMoe replied to attitudz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all I am sorry that you are having problems. Constipation is very painful at times. You probably weren't as clean out as you thought prior to surgery. Sometimes that happens. Second: it's really important to drink your fluids..water is best. Eat FIBER ONE cereal with milk or mix it with yogurt. I also eat a peeled apple every aftenoon. Take 1-2 Ducolax pills each night. Walking is also good to help the system adjust. Third: I don't like Miralax as I think it's too harsh. Metamucil is too thick. I've never use Benefiber but lots of people say it's wonderful. Watch for things that are somewhat constipating naturally..e.g. bananas, cheese. Fourth: About every 5-6 days, I will take MOM to get a complete cleaning out. I feel that the sigmoidcolon is what is being emptied and not the main colon and I want a complete "poop" removement. After, I do this & everything is empited, I eat Active yogurt to replace the flora in the colon that may have been lost. All of this done with my surgeon's approval. -
Infamous Left shoulder pain
timetobefree replied to steelergirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Interesting! I had it really bad the last two days (not today). However, I felt a twinge today when I ate my first full liquid in 3 weeks (1/2 c. yogurt). So I have a feeling I'm going to be the opposite of you - feeling that pain when I get towards satisfied/full. Amy -
Will I have to eat like a bird for the rest of my life??
stephaniel71 posted a blog entry in Blog 70800
So I went to my first support group at my doctors office. I was excited to actually talk with other people (in person) that have the band. I explained at group that this journey has been a lot harder at times then I thought it was going to be. I feel like there is lot more willpower involved than I anticipated (as I am getting hungry every 2-3 hours). I did learn a valuable lesson...they assured me it does get easier. I guess the golden "sweet spot" is truly the key. The point where the band works more for you rather than you for it??? The hunger I guess does go away...thank God. Can't wait!! I did get a big boost to my ego as everyone said I was doing great (38 pounds in 12 weeks). The counselor said that most of what I am doing is dieting. Yes the band is helping, but I needed to give myself a lot more credit. Most lapband patients lose most of there weight further down the road when they reach that 'sweet spot' rather than at the begining. So that part was great. However... The counselor that ran the group has had the band for 8 years. She is a 5 ft woman who has lost over 150 pounds and is at goal and maintaining. However the way she maintains is rediculous. She eats yogurt, protein shakes and cottage cheese 85% of the time. She is perfectly content with this life. She says she doesn't miss the food. Do I have to do this? Is this what my future holds? I realize because I don't have a lot of restriction right now, I can eat more then a cup of food. I know this will change, but will have to live like that? All of you out there that have reached goal and are maintaining, please give me some hope for the future. I can't see my life like this woman chooses to live. I am happy it works for her, but COME ON!! -
Sugar Free Yogurt? Does it exist?
msrojacks replied to Michelle1972's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like yogurt, but never had luck with it. It always seemed like an empty calorie food. I would be still hungry after consuming one. When they are on sale, I buy them, but its hard to have the will power to only have one! When I get to the mushy stage, i think I will only buy 1 at a time -
What was your doctors diet?
ESJ11978 replied to K-ROD's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor also had me on a semi liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery. I was able to have a slim fast high protein for breakfast and lunch then a lean cuisine for dinner. These were extras if I was really hungry 1 sugar free popsicle and 1 sugar free jello and 1 fat free yogurt. I would call your doctor tomorrow and find out. That diet is really important. Good Luck!! -
I've Lost All Desire to Eat!! Please help!
LAN2k posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm almost 7 weeks out. Today is the second day in a row that I am not wanting to eat! I am repulsed by the thought of food, any food. Last week I was at least enjoying some different foods in very small amounts, and even if I had trouble eating at least I had desire for certain food. Yesterday I could not eat the strawberry greek yogurt I took out for breakfast, after one lick from a teaspoon I nearly gagged. I then managed to force down a small peach autivia yogurt but it was not with ease. Even the smell of most of the things I had found appealing are repulsive. I am only able to sip on one flavor vitamin water and one brand of protein drink which is a fruit juice blend called "naked protein zone", even this is hard. Has this ever happened to anyone here? Will it pass? Who should I call, doctor or dietitian? Could it be a side effect of something? I have been having such trouble already and now this too? If there is anyone out there who may have gone through this or can advise please do. I'm really upset. Thank you. -
1.5 years out & still throwing up?
FluffyChix replied to SparklyInNOut's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm sorry to hear of your dad's looming surgery. Glad you are calling a doc today. In my personal experience, it takes weeks or months to see a specialist. You can't find anything, cuz your situation is pretty abnormal. Most people who throw up that often and regularly know to get it checked out. You most likely have stricture, but only medical tests and imaging is gonna show what condition you're dealing with. If you have to go back to protein drinks and thinned down yogurt, you will quickly lose any regain, but it isn't a fun type of eating for sure. I'd also try pureeing soups and stews and keep it very liquidy to see if you can handle any meat proteins. Try blending egg drop soup and see how it goes down. That's the texture you should aim for. But you have to be sure you are getting all of your protein in, so make sure to have protein drinks. What you are describing is a serious situation. I am not being tough-love. I'm being pragmatic. Letting a problem of this magnitude continue for 1.5 years+ is not normal. There must be a payout for that behavior. In 1.5 years of daily throwing up sometimes multiple times a day, you could have done crap tons of damage to your anatomy (Barret's Esophagus, Esophagitis, pre-cancerous cells, esophageal erosion, ulcers, hernias, strictures, webbing, esophageal spasms, and more fun.) At that point I would say your behavior is bulimic in nature. There is always a payout with aberrant behaviors. -
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome & Sleeve
lolli replied to MSanti's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Im about 10 months out and I can say that I think this surgery IS the cure for PCOS. Those of you that seem worried about it maybe being harder then normal to lose weight after surgery because of the PCOS I would say dont worry. I have followed my doctors recomended diet (no startches) low carbs (healthy carbs fruits, yogurt, ect.) and I have found that I am loseing weight faster than maybe someone without PCOS. For the first time in 5 years my periods are normal again (i would go 3 months without a period before) I have also noticed a direct association between my weight loss and my cycle. About a week after my period my weight loss stalls, then about a week before my period i drop 3-5 lbs and again during the week of my period I drop another 3-5 lbs. I dont have any structered excercise that I do I try to keep moving but diet is key. Stay away from startches/ bad carbs and the sleeve will be a success! I hope wen i go for my one year checkup in december I will be at my goal weight of 125. Dont let yourself think that because of the PCOS you are just naturally going to lose slower because I believe it to be the exact opposite. -
Without doubt, my band is stamped RUN BY DEMONS! Morning tightness(check), NO hunger (check), had it for lunch, won't go down for dinner (check). I am all over the place. Tonight, I got a water bubble and had to run from the room. This happens as if I took in to much air and air came from below to create the bubble in my throat. Since I got this in 09 I have been very happy with it, but it is fickel, fickel, FICKEL! Climate changes from cool to hot, I am on liquids (learned the hard way). I don't really feel tightness, I just know some mornings not to try to eat and do coffee or hot tea. I haven't come to an understanding of "restriction"; I know it doesn't take as much for me to feel statisfied. I have lost the weight with next to no exercise and would reach goal if I kicked the sugar out of my life again. There only a few foods I can't eat, but I have found that there isn't much I want to eat anymore. In the begining I loved chicken/tuna salad, deli meat & cheese or a grilled chicken breast for lunch ...NO! Everyday is a struggle to find something to eat and it's doing a job on me. To add to my worries, I had to get upper dentures and learn how to chew yet again. My weight is holding but I don't think I get enough calories in daily and I work hard for the protein. Greek yogurt is helping and I don't want smoothies or protein drinks. I am at a loss, but I did learn that if I have a bad day and stuff comes up I head to the liquids for 2 or 3 days to let the swelling go down, When I had this problem summer of '10 I didn't and I got tighter and tighter and had to get an unfill and climb back up. Each person is different and so is each person. Listen to the band, if it says no morning food, don't try it. The band knows and it is in controll.
