    Calories per day?

Definitely a question for your surgeon or nutritionist. There are so many things that can factor into the “right” calorie goals—age, weight, activity level, history, etc. none of us could possibly give you a good answer for this question for you. We can probably all answer it for ourselves, but what works for us is not likely to work fine you.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

I'm the 18th as well! I'm very excited but also a bit nervous. Still going back and forth wether this is the right choice for me. I know I'll probably never lose the weight without the surgery, but I'm afraid I'll fall back into old habits after having the surgery. Is anybody else having these doubt/concerns?
  3. Billho: Thank you so much! What is your favorite liquid protein to drink? I don't even know when my pre op diet will start. idk my surgery date yet BUT, I want to start trying different shakes and start doing low carb/ high protein now. CONGRATULATIONS on reaching your goal weight!!!

    Back to basics

Well today is the day, June 28th, and I have decided to really hunker down and try to lose the 10lbs I have left of regain from having Piper. I had lost ALL of my weight after having her but then Covid struck, we moved away for the summer and I gained about 15 lbs. I'm having a really hard time losing the weight from this and I wonder if my body is just happy to be where it's at, but I'm not. My clothes are all based around 130 so I'd be happy to be about 135. I was told the other day that I looked "too sickly" at 128-130 and that's not my goal to look like that, but I thought I looked pretty ok. I feel much better at 148 than I did at almost 300, but, mentally, I'm happy where I once was at 130. So I'm going to do a happy medium and pick 135 as my goal for now! Back to basics of protein, protein, and more protein -- and of course water, water and more water! hahahah Meal prepping and planning tonight and on Friday I'll order groceries for pick up (staying out of the grocery store as best as I can only temps me to buy Starbucks and food I don't need!). Cross my fingers I can see goal in a month -- I sure hope so!

    June Surgeries

I have to administer shots as well. My doctor was worried about blood clots because of my weight. I have a friend who started at a lower weight and had a different surgeon and did not have to do this. Luckily, I outsourced my duties...my husband has been doing it for me. I almost passed out when they described it to me, so I feel for you! I hope it gets easier!

Lying about not getting surgery is awful

my typical response when people comment on my weight loss is that I have been walking a lot (average 14,000 steps a day) and and eating less. That's all true and enough information to get past it. But I have told a handful of people that I trust about my surgery. I don't hide it if asked, but don't feel that it is something I need to broadcast to everyone. It's not everyone's business to know my medical history.

    May Surgeries - check in!

Hey all! I was sleeved on 5/10 and feeling absolutely great. I have had no complications and can stomach just about everything I eat (on plan) at this point. Although, like others have recently mentioned, my tastes have changed and sometimes I get sad when I think about going the rest of my life not being able to gorge on food. The thought of a buffet gives me anxiety because really - what do you choose when you want to choose it all?! Only discomfort I have started to get recently is the scar tissue under my skin where the incisions were. My doctor said to expect this because during surgery nerve-endings were cut and as they start to heal you can start to feel where the surgery happened. It's not painful at all. It just feels like a bruise when I press on it to clean in shower or something rubs up against it. Anyone else have this now being that you are at least 4 weeks out from surgery? Oh, and does anyone else think about the surgery and food and protein and water and what to have to eat that day like every waking moment? For me, it's obsessive. I have been losing on average half a pound a day so I sit there and calculate how many more days/months it will take to loose X amount of weight and I even factor in losing less a day as my BMI drops. Seriously, I feel crazy! haha
  8. I just found this site and joined and it looks like it’s going to be a big help for me. I’m 4 1/2 months in on my preop weight loss plan and I have really been struggling and making terrible decisions for the past month. And it showed up on the scale. I just wanted to say hello and see if anyone has any words of wisdom for someone who is struggling before the surgery even happens.

  9. I just Had my second meeting with my nutritionist. She has told me to keep a journal and I use myfitnesspal for that. I’ve been having some issues so she now has asked me to create meal plans for the week And be very formal about it. She reviews the information in myfitnesspal and gives me feedback on what I have done and what changes I need to make. She makes sure that I understand and I’m following the 30 rule and encourages me to eat more protein. Protein protein protein! Since I have been having some trouble over the last month in keeping with the program I am going to have another meeting with her but I think that’s an extra meeting. I have been encouraged to contact any of the weight loss staff if I have concerns or questions and if I felt that I needed additional time with a nutritionist that is available to me I believe.

Surgery scheduled for in the AM

nerves are normal, having something go wrong during the surgery is rare, and you WILL lose the weight if you're stay committed to your clinic's food plan. like creekimp said, your job right after surgery is to stay hydrated. And get your protein in, too - but hydration is even more important those first couple of weeks.

    LGBTQIA?

Did you make a LGBTQ community here?👀😍🥰 I would love to be part of it. My weight gain was partially due to challenges I faced in my sexual orientation journey in my early 20s for sure.

    May Surgeries - check in!

I'm coming up on 8 weeks next Wednesday, so hard to believe! I'd say that weight loss has been slower than I'd like. I am averaging 2 - 3 pounds a week. But every week so far has been a loss, so I celebrate that. I'm down 25 pounds since surgery, a total of 40 pounds with preop diet included. I seem to be able to tolerate pretty much everything so far. Water and other fluids are going down well. Protein shakes are better the last couple of weeks, they still taste super sweet, and not at all delicious, but I can get them down. I've started having small amounts of vegetables with my proteins. Tonight I tried carrot and asparagus! My major stress is worrying each day if I'm eating too much, or not getting in protein. I track on myfitnesspal and average 600 - 800 calories a day, my surgeon asked me to get in 800 -1000 and protein usually hits around 70 or 80.
  13. I am 10 years post sleeve. I got my sleeve at 54 years old. I was 5'3 and 320 pounds. Best thing I ever did. Honestly, I have never gotten down as low as some folks ..... nor as low as my surgeon would have liked.... but he actually told me that the goal is to lose and keep off 70% of your excess weight - that is considered a medical success. For me, that was losing and keeping off about 130 pounds. I am 65 years old. I went from a PLUS size 28 to about a 14/16 petite regular womens clothing. I work 40 hours a week, keep my house and raise chickens, and other critters up, support my adult daughter who has some medical issues. I organic garden vegetables and fruit , swim, take walks and feel great. I am healthier than I was at 40. I eat well - protein, salads, veggies and fruits. I watch carbs. I have learned how to eat so that I am satisfied - and eating a good balance of healthy fats and variety of foods. I also eat a treat every day. Heck, I'm 65 and I deserve my chocolate ! A couple of my good friends know about my surgery. They "would never" .... and they haven't. Both are not able to work, and have several weight and age related issues that I have managed to dodge. Sure I have my aches and pains... but I am moving and DOING and I am out there happy as heck !

    LGBTQIA?

I meant to answer this but have been exhausted. I don't know exactly what it was that impacted my post op recovery most. I had my gallbladder removed alongside the gastric bypass. besides Adult onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia I have lifelong Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. And quite a few medical conditions. I am now finding out it is likely I also have Ehlers Danlos. I am trying to find a definitive diagnosis. My post op recovery took a little longer, I was bedbound after surgery. I ended up back in hospital shortly after going home due to an undiagnosed pre-existing condition (likely tied to Ehlers Danlos) that caused Aspiration pneumonia (a form of dysphasia) I dont think the Adrenal Hyperplasia itself affected my recovery. Even with all my medical conditions and even with the challenges I have had over the course of my surgery and the recovery and the challenges now - I do not regret having had Gastric Bypass surgery. I would never have reached the weight I have now which is a normal healthy weight for my height that I never could reach even as a pre-teen. Well I cannot remember being this weight. I have to find ways to work around different barriers and challenges I guess. I was extremely weak but now I think it was both due to M.E. and possible Ehlers Danlos. I just would do it again as well as the skin removal and body lift procedures I had despite the challenge that was ... especially because of the roadblocks that Adrenal hyperplasia, PCOS, and the inability to exercise due to M.E imposed on me. caused.
  15. I’m disappointed I started my preop diet three weeks in advance and I only lost ten pounds. My surgery is scheduled for AM and I’m so nervous. So many emotions. Nervous something will go wrong or that I won’t lose much weight. Thoughts?

    Pre-op diet weight loss

You're eating less than 500 very low carb calories a day. That, in itself, will cause a little weight loss in 6 days. But the bulk of what you've lost is likely water. Because of your low carbs, you are stripping your liver of all the glucose stored there...so it shrinks. (Which is really nice, because there is a little more room for the surgeon to work with the liver reduced) As the glucose in the liver is used, a lot of water is expelled, too. This "instant significant weight loss" when we mostly eliminate carbs from our diets....is why people are so delighted when they go on a Keto diet and instantly lose weight and inches around their waists. But they're not losing fat....they're just losing their emergency glucose and the water it's stored in, and just shrinking their livers. Your loss is normal and I wouldn't worry about it. Keep following your team's instructions.
  17. I started using weights about six weeks out, but lighter weights. Now at five months out the weights I use have gone up from 10 to 20 lbs, depending on what I am doing. Trying to keep things as firm as possible, and I found working out helps take off the lbs.
  18. it's mostly water. Plus most people lose a lot more the first week than they do the second week - but again, that's because a big chunk of that first week's loss is water. It's unlikely you'll lose another 10.5 lbs during week 2 of the pre-op diet - but even if you did, why would you worry? Most people would love to lose 21 lbs during the pre-op diet! You'll likely lose some more weight the second week, but probably not as much as you have so far.
  19. Hi everyone! I’m am on day 6 of my pre-op diet and I have lost 10.5lbs. My daily “meals” are 2 premier protein shakes, 3oz of chicken or fish, 1 cup steamed veggies or 2 cups of raw veggies, 64 oz of water and 1 cup chick or beef broth. It seems like an excessive amount of weight I have lost in a matter of 6 days. Is this normal? My pre-op diet weight was 264.5lbs and today I weigh exactly 254.0lbs. Just worried I’m losing too much weight too quickly. I still have 8 days to go until surgery. Any one have similar weight loss on pre-op? Thank you in advance :)

    What was your tipping point?

My tipping point: My butt being too big for some seats or clothes, not feeling sexy often, body discomforts, lower self esteem/confidence, not sitting on my husband's lap anymore, not getting on top when being intimate with my husband, health risks, health problems, not wearing a bikini/ belly shirts, my son poking at me and saying " mom you have a big butt and big stomach", being at my current weight of 333lbs!!! I am soooo OVER it!!! I can't believe I did this to myself. My yo yo diets did not give long term results, it is time to get professional/medical help. I am happy and grateful for the opportunity to get gastric bypass surgery soon!

    Calorie Deficit question

I am 4 months VSG and I walk 60 mins 4 days, and lift weights for 60-90 minutes 3x/wk and walk 30 minutes on those days. Been lifting since June 1. Since then, I noticed if my calories are 800, protein 60g I do not lose anything. My Fluids are minimum 64 oz all days. If I increase my calories to 1000-1100 and increase my protein to 90-100g I start to lose again. I am not interested in decreasing exercise that just seems counterintuitive to me. I do what seems to work for me and my activity level, and I am one who believes it is important to get my BMR increased so I have a smooth transition into maintenance.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I completely understand these fears and have a lot of the same ones, particularly the failing, regain, and loose skin. Failing and regain is what I’ve gone through my whole life with failed diets, and though it’s a possibility still after surgery, this tool is going to help me more than my sheer willpower ever did. as far as hair loss, there are so many advancements in hairpieces! I have worn a lace wig since high school due to a condition I have called short Anagen syndrome, so hair loss isn’t even a concern for me only because my hair is already extremely thin and short (like a baby’s) and I wear wigs 🤷🏻‍♀️. Look up YouTube videos for “lace wig install” and you’ll see how easy and realistic they are, just to hold you over until your hair regrows. Loose skin is a concern because I know it’ll prevent me from looking like I always dreamed I’d look, but there are surgeries for that. Additionally, the way I see it is, either I deal with the extra skin, or deal with the extra fat. It’s only one or the other, no other choice. I’d rather deal with extra skin and fit into nice clothes and feel energetic and healthy, than continue down this path and gain more and more weight. doubts are normal! This forum has helped me a lot in seeing that there are more successes than failures in this process. Best of luck to you.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

Hi Onmywayfrom256, I can definitely relate to your doubts. I know that the decision to have this surgery is right for me at this point, but I do have some fears of it not working the way I hoped, loose skin, hair falling out, regain, & complications. I have dealt with mild hair loss after having each of my 2 children. I am less worried about this, as I heard it is temporary. Still not fun. Hopefully, protein & iron supplements will help. The loose skin is something that I may not be able to avoid, but I am going to try to take collagen in addition to all the other vitamins & supplements we need. I will also try cocoa butter & compression. Not sure if any of it will help, but I will try. Some things unfortunately are out of our control, so it is easy to fear the unknown. This is a big step we are all taking, and we all want to succeed in something that has been challenging for us. Most of us have been let down before with weight loss attempts, so those doubts unfortunately pop up. Hoping you feel better knowing that someone else has concerns about the road ahead. Congratulations on your upcoming surgery. Wishing you a successful journey. 🤞😊

    Eating disorder treatment

Bariatric Surgery patients represent a surprisingly increasing number of patients in inpatient treatment for anorexia according to John's Hopkins. Yes, anorexia and other eating disorders are a serious risk for our population. Yes, treatment....including eating more.... will be a help even if you gain a little weight to find a managable maintenance level of calories. Passing out is incredibly dangerous and can kill you or others if you drive. It's also incredibly unsafe on stairs, around heavy equipment, and in the company of unsafe people. Being that low on nutrition is hard on your body, particularly your heart. You can do permenant damage in short order. Take your condition seriously. Your very demanding job and thinner body are of no use to you if you imperil your safety, health, and eventually your life. (it's tough on relationships, too) Wishing you the very best.
