    October surgery friends??

How is my October sleeve crew doing? I'm recovering well. Tomorrow I'll hit the one week mark. The only pain I have is incision pain at the stomach extraction point. Hit 64oz yesterday, so I'm proud of that! It's also looking like I may be under 300 at my first post op appointment on Friday. Still on clears until then and then I'll move to all liquids for two weeks.

    I need cofffeeeee NOW!

surgeons are all across the board on this. Some say you can never drink caffeinated beverages ever again. Some patients are drinking it before they even leave the hospital. Some surgeons have you wait a month - or three months - or six months. And some are OK with a limited amount - like one cup a day. Or some combo of the above (I could have decaf fairly shortly after surgery - maybe 3rd or 4th week? (it's been awhile for me). Then after six months, I could have ONE cup of caffeinated per day). SO....ask your surgeon. Opinions vary, and some might depend on your individual circumstances.
  4. So what Med School did your partner graduate from that informed him on how fast you should heal? Some of us are back at our normal activities in a week or so while others take months to get back. It really depends on a lot of things like your starting weight/BMI, your physical condition before surgery, your nutrition, the complications of the surgery, any other conditions you have etc, etc. Even totally healthy people after surgery have different healing rates.

    I need cofffeeeee NOW!

The Doctor is normally going to frown on coffee because, well, that is what Doctors do. I started having a shot of espresso in my morning protein shake about a week ago after 6 weeks post op and I really enjoy both the flavor change and the little caffeine buzz I missed in the morning. I don't drink any coffee after that, although prior to surgery I was a 5 or 6 cup a day guy. I think like anything, everything in moderation and when you are past a month or so when all the major wound healing is past, a cup of coffee is not going to hurt your recovery too much.

    June Surgeries

Hi all! I had my surgery 6/11, so, just over 4 months post op. I'm down 64 pounds so far and the difference is amazing. I've been doing before and after pics every month and am so pleased with my progress. I've officially shrunk through my whole back log of clothes that were too small in my closet and have had to venture out to do minimal shopping. I'm trying not to invest a lot in clothes right now because I know they won't fit in a few months. I second what ShoppGirl said - I have alarms set up on my phone at specific times that go off every day to remind me to eat. My plan has me eating 3 small meals and 2 snacks, so, just like ShoppGirl, I'm eating about every 3 hours as well. I had gotten to the point with shakes that I literally just can't drink them. They upset my stomach and are just kind of revolting by the end. I think it's because I was on them for 6 solid weeks between my pre-op and post-op diet. I have worked really hard to ensure I am getting 60-80g of protein a day without them and am able to do that consistently. How's everyone doing on vegetables? I feel like by the time I get through my protein I only have room for maybe a couple bites of any vegetables I may have on my plate. This makes me a little sad as I've always loved veggies. Just curious how everyone else was doing in this area.
  7. I'm 4 weeks post-op (- 2 days) and I'm dying for an iced Latte... How soon can I start having coffee again? Caffeine and all...

    No weight loss

Honestly - stay off the scale. The stall will pass, and they typically last 2 to 3 weeks. Mine only just broke, and fixating on the scale just feeds the frustration. What's going on with you is perfectly normal, and won't last. You'll begin losing again as soon as your body has adjusted to it's new radical changes. Leave the scale be, distract yourself, and weigh yourself again in a week's time.

    June Surgeries

Eating at a set time helps. I eat at 6, 12 and 6 with snacks at 9 and 3. This means I am eating something every three hours (protein shake counts as eating here). In the beginning I set alarms to remind me to eat.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

November 5th in Louisville, Kentucky. I’ve been waiting for a while to get approved. Then, once I was approved, Iwas told that hospitals weren’t scheduling surgeries because they needed COVID beds. So I got it in my head that the surgery wouldn’t be until next year. Then they called. And now it’s in a few weeks! Ack! I’m excited and nervous.
  12. Hi Hailey, I also had hypertension (notice that past tense there!). The day before your surgery, your hospital coordinator will call you to give you specific instructions (wash with antibacterial soap, nothing by mouth after midnight, etc.) and should go through your list of medications and tell you which to take the day of surgery and which not to take. Some of them, like losartan/Cozaar, interfere with anesthesia. Your anesthesiologist has ways to control your blood pressure, so I wouldn't worry overmuch about your anxiety spiking your BP. I was as anxious as all get out and scored a super-awesome 🙄 145/87 even on amlodipine the morning of surgery, and things went just fine. But here is the awesome news: my PCP told me to take one more dose of the losartan with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) the day after surgery since the HCTZ is a water pill and would help me pee out the surgical fluid. That was the last time I took that pill—the day after surgery. Within two weeks, I was on half my dose of amlodipine, and my doctor said to take my BP every morning and if it was below 130/80, don't take the half-dose. I haven't taken it in a week and a half, and my blood pressure has remained firmly below those numbers. So it can happen very fast. I would speak to your psychiatrist to ensure that the anti-anxiety med you're on isn't some kind of extended-release thing. Your medication won't stay in your digestive tract long enough for extended-release medications to work. I had to be switched from Wellbutrin XL (which I realize is not an anti-anxiety med...) to Wellbutrin IR... and then the dose was halved. You will be totally fine.

    Overwhelmed and scared... but hopeful?

I've been mostly relying on my protein shakes and protein water since the op, purely because I'm struggling to eat the quantities my nutritionist wants me to. I'm trying! But I can only manage half. So I'm also using protein enriched soy milk in my shakes and coffee/matcha lattes, which bumps it up nicely. I'm eating tofu and chickpeas predominantly in my puree foods. I'll be moving onto soft foods in a week or so and have an eating plan laid out for that. I'll definitely be eating seitan and other mock meat items once I can! They have good protein, along with tofu, tempeh, and legumes. But until I can actually eat more than a 1/4 cup of solid food more than 3 times a day, I'll be stuck with the shakes and protein waters.
  14. Hello Everyone! I am scheduled for VSG on 11/9! I am so excited but also nervous. I have hypertension- which worsens when I experience high anxiety. My blood pressure has been running in the normal range thanks to multiple BP meds. However, I am worried that surgery day anxiety will spike my BP and interfere with my ability to have the procedure. Just curious if other people have had experiences with getting prescribed a PRN anxiety medication for the day of surgery. I have my pre-op appointment next week but I would love to hear other peoples experiences. Thank you in advance!
  15. Hi all, I had gastric sleeve on 23 September 2021. I have had stomach pain all day. It is a pretty sharp cramp. Called my doctor's office and they said just take the mylanta and famotadine and see if it settles. I had beans last night, mashed in the food processor. could this be just bad gas pain? Mind you, I had plenty of gas last night from the beans, does this mean no more beans for me? that my stomach is rejecting this particular food. I have had canned refried beans and no pain, but yesterday I made a pot myself and put them in the food processor.
  16. I'm going to dissent a little bit from the comment above, though I agree in most part. Your nerves are regrowing after being cut during surgery. It was so painful for me for like a week and a half... and then, BAM, literally overnight, no problems. I can bend forward to pick things up, I can wriggle in the bed to turn over. Definitely call your surgeon. Make a whole lot of noise if you need to. But I would say only go to the emergency room if it is absolutely debilitating OR if you have a fever, swelling, or redness that is hot to the touch.
  17. I struggled with the pre-surgery diet and the liquid phase. For me, the week prior to the surgery was much tougher than the week after the surgery (I had no major complications, so take that for what it is worth). And it is a struggle for the reasons that you mentioned -- you are completely changing your life. You are not just changing how much you eat, you are changing what you can eat and you are changing your emotional coping mechanisms. I had my little plan for how I was going to eat right and eat light for the few weeks before the surgery and then my emotions and fears blew that plan to pieces. My mind was terrified of what was to come -- I had some terrible eating binges about 10 days before surgery. But remember why you ever stepped into the surgeon's office to begin with. For me, it was the realization that I had been telling myself for 20 years that the "next diet" would work. Some of the "next diets" worked for a while, but none of them kept the weight off. Everyone says surgery is a tool for weight loss. Agreed. But I needed an extreme tool to lose an extreme amount of weight. It was now or never and I didn't consider never to be an acceptable answer. So I buckled down, made it through the liquid liver phase (it gets better after about day 3) and got through to surgery. And it has been worth it. I'm 2 months out and do not regret it.
  18. Hi all! I’m about 6 weeks until surgery and I’m trying to pre-plan Protein sources, maybe even meal prep to freeze. I have tried using GENEPRO. Bought some injury today to try. Just wondering what you all would recommend to get to have for my post op period? Also wondering about if anyone did meal prep to freeze for afterwards? Just can’t think of what might be good to buy or prep and freeze ahead of time. Thanks!
  19. I am not sure what i should have for my first sugar dessert after 7 weeks i got ly doctors approach any reccomendations also what friend food did you have?
  20. I so want to respond to your post right now in a lenghty way, but I'm preping for an interview for the past week and working to deadlines at the same time. I just want to say for now, that I'm delighted by your good news, all around, and so glad you were able to adapt to travelling with ease. A bit worried about about your hunger feelings, as being pre-op, I am sometimes hungry WHILE eating. I guess the brain takes a while to stop demanding. I'll reply more later. Well done! x

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

November 2nd and I just found out last week Very nervous!!
  22. I'm 4 weeks post-op and woke up this morning with a terribly sore back! I have the worst ache on my right side, just below my shoulder blade that I can't seem to stretch or massage out. I took a Tylenol, hoping that will take the edge off. As others have said, I've read that this is pretty normal due to the changes your body is going through so rapidly. Doesn't make it any better, but maybe take solace in the fact that its normal, and you definitely aren't the only one.

    No weight loss

Hi boogie thanks for the words of encouragement now I’m officially 2 weeks post op and still at the same..😞…I have an upcoming visit with my nutritionist, I will have to ask if this is normal or am I doing something wrong, I’m tracking everything I eat and walking 5 to 6 days a week…. The only thing I can think of that may be affecting the weight loss is my intake of my daily calories.. I’ve just upped it a bit I was in the high 300 to 450-ish yesterday i hit 500… not sure if all this is right.
  24. when I was looking for a plastic surgeon three or four years ago, I was told (by people on this and other bariatric forums) to expect about $8K-10K per procedure, and I found through my five consults that that rang true. It'll depend on the surgeon's experience and reputation and his/her location (urban areas and the coasts are usually more). PLUS my consults were three or four years ago. So this is a long-winded way of saying, that $25K figure for two procedures in the Boston area doesn't surprise me at all. and yes - insurance usually won't pay unless there's some medical issue going on, like chronic rashes that don't respond to traditional treatments. If you do have such problems, make sure you see a doctor about them and that they're well-documented. The surgeon I used for my body contouring surgeries (two of them) didn't file with insurance, either, because he knew it wouldn't be covered. you can always shop around. You can get the same procedures done in Mexico for probably half the cost. There are a couple of excellent plastic surgeons there who've worked on many bariatric patients I've run into on these forums. Also, there are people on here who've gone to Miami for plastic surgery, because oddly, it's cheaper there than many other parts of the country, even though it's urban and on a coast. But yea - what you were told is pretty normal.

    Just a taste?

The only ask of my surgeon was to stick to the plan for the first 3 months. Which I did. My first foray off plan was 2 weeks at Walt Disney World - 18 weeks out. I stuck to getting my protein & fluids, but I also had treats in moderation. I did not over indulge. The restriction definitely helped keep things in check, My weight stayed the same. I went back to what I regularly eat once back home. The weight loss is continuing. I did not go into this with the intent of avoiding certain foods forever. I want to be able to have things on occasion. (Caveat - I'm not a binge eater)
