    Am I doing enough walking

You are doing great. You are only three days post op! Doing any walking is good. Don't put so much pressure on yourself, you just need to focus on healing right now
  2. Hello all! I was banded back on 9/1 after a decent struggle with my insurance. I am now 3 weeks from surgery and am feeling great. I weighed in at 409lbs in early June and I was 388lbs on the day of my surgery. Since surgery, I'm down to 367lbs after having lost 22lbs in the first week (eek!) and 2lbs in the 2nd week. However, after stepping on the scale this morning, I noticed I gained 3lbs. I know that my body is going through some major changes and I also know that I've just begun in week 3 to add some pureed and even some soft-solid foods into my diet. I'm a little discouraged, but again, I know my body is going through some major changes. Having type-2 diabetes and taking insulin, I also am very familiar with the harder struggle people have with losing/gaining weight. I guess in the end, I'm just venting but I am determined to keep at it and get myself healthier. Has anyone else had the same struggle so early on? I was reading into the 'bander's hell' before their first fill, but it's not even that I'm hungry all the time. I've been eating small meals (3-4 a day) and have been drinking my clear Protein and Protein shakes. I know this post is all over the place - I'm just a bit confused and concerned and just needing to vent. Any suggestions?
  3. I am doing great on mushies. My weight loss has stalled, but I think that is due to the fact that I have diabetes. I have some fish in the oven right now :wink2: Please note that I am not trying to take any business away from your Dr's. I am just really pleased with Central DuPage Hospital and Dr Vallina. Again, I have spend oodles of time in hospitals with family members, and I have previously worked in the medical field (NOT at CDH in case you were wondering), and I can honestly say, without exception, that these people are GREAT! 4. Hi Jada, It’s awesome that you are moving along so quickly. I am glad to hear that your tests went well. I know you were worried. I don’t know what Medicare requires. I am sure the insurance lady will keep you posted. Don’t worry if you need to do the psych evaluation. Like I said it was pretty easy, just long. I was disappointed at first about the 3 month diet but now I think it was a good thing. It has given me time to practice the banded eating techniques and get my self prepared. Eating without drinking has been tough for me. I have read a lot and have been watching the forums here. I have learned a lot and I know I am ready. I probably won’t have my surgery until sometime in January. But I am ok with that. I would like to use a week of vacation and right now I don’t have any left. I will have 4 weeks coming after the 1st of the year.

    considering the lapband

One of my band buddies was banded by him and swears by his skills. She has lost over 100 pounds now and felling wonderful. I am in the midwest and just got my band three weeks ago. I feel really great. With the preop I have now lost 30 pounds and my appetite is sooooo much less than it was. I have not had a fill yet - that comes in two weeks. It is a great thing to get banded. I am so happy!
  6. HI everyone !! ok here is an update ... well 5 more days til the big banding day the Protein shakes are not bad they do fill you up -and honestly you are not hungry at all . i had my pre op visit at SAMC , signed my conent already, and all of my pre op testing is done (YAAAAA) plus i ordered my Lovenox and and chewable multi Vitamins from the e store on the Suburaban Surgical site. I also ordered optisource protien drink because it contains 12 grams of protien per 8 oz serving . After banding you are required to haev betweeen 60-80 grams of protien a day -- and since the first 2 weeks are liquids to pureed food it is very hard to get the protien in daily. i am looking forward to next week at this time - I will be on the other side  Annette
  7. A plateau can mean a couple of things but it basically comes down to calories taken in vs calories being expended. If you take in more than you're expending, you gain. If you expend more than you're taking in, then you'll lose. Keep in mind that as you lose weight, it will take fewer calories to maintain that weight, so you'll have to reduce the calories you're eating...or expend more. For example, to maintain 260 pounds at my height, age and current activity level, I would have to eat about 2100 calories (roughly). To maintain a weight of 140 pounds, I could only eat about 1800 calories. Not much of a difference, but enough of one that it can stall any losses. Also, depending on the type of exercises you're doing, you may be building muscle which is denser (and thus weighs more) than the the same volume of fat. If you look and feel like you're losing weight (clothes hanging more loosely, muscles looking more toned, etc.), that may be the problem (I'd like to have that problem though). I posted a thread called "calculating your daily requirements" with a formula for calculating your daily food requirements...or you can go to the Mayo Clinic site and put in your height, age, activity level and the weight you'd like to be and it will calculate how many calories it would take per day to maintain that weight. .
  8. I so not have 2 puppies (around 8-10 lbs each) and I avoided picking them up for at least the first week after surgery. I'm nearly 2 wks post-op now and still try to be careful. Internal sutures need to develop scar tissue to "anchor" the band and port. Picking up heaving objects of any kind too soon can damage or weaken those support anchors. Later down the road these weakened areas could lead to slippage, port flips etc. (now this does not mean that only heavy lifting is the cause of these types of complications... just known and avoidable risk factors)... this is how it was described to me! -- utilize any and all your support systems at least the first couple of weeks because it is not worth risking damage/trauma of any kind to your new lap-band --

Preop meeting had to go to

I'm 47 and I lost 23 pounds in the first 30 days after surgery and WAS THRILLED with the the progress! You really can't compare one person's results to another. There are so many things that contribute to our progress, many of which are out of our control. My advice is to set non-scale goals that are specific, measurable and achievable. 1. Get the recommended Protein every day, (74g for me). 2. Exercise X times per week for X minutes per session. 3. Weigh once per week and NO MORE... You get the idea. If you do these things, the weight loss will come. You WILL STALL! Make peace with that now. If you weigh no more than once per week, you won't focus so much on the stall when it comes. As far as recovery, I'm not sure its the same. I have a desk job and went back to work the week after surgery and was fine. Some people have a lot of fatigue. I didn't. I was very lucky, (and compliant with what they told me to do, which helps).
  10. Hello, I am 11 days post op. I have 3 kids - 7years, 4years, and 2years. I was sleeved on a Monday and came home Wednesday. My husband took that whole week off. My mom helped in the evenings. The biggest thing was/is potty time for the 2 year old. I can't pick him up still. I was able to do light house work by 1 week. I'm still not doing bath time. We have had a lot of movie time and coloring time. Stuff that they can sit and do. I've taken them to the park a couple times since the weather was so nice. The older 2 are good at playing and staying where I tell them and I followed the 2 year old around. The first time we only stayed 1 hour bc I was becoming tired. The second time a little over 2. Slow and steady and before you know it you will be back to normal!!!
  11. hello all! I am just waiting from my insurance to approve my sleeve and wondering yalls opinions.... My surgeon uses a 34 bougie; I currently have GERD due to H.Pylori which I am being treated for (should be gone in about 2 weeks). I am wondering what the general consensus is on acid reflux with a size 34 stomach. My doc said the small the stomach the greater the likelihood of acid reflux so he thinks 34 is a good mid point... Any thoughts?

    34 bougie and acid reflux

I heard the smaller the bougie the more of a chance for reflux. My doctor uses a size 40 bougie and I have NO reflux at all. I had to take some prevacid a couple days after surgery but that's it. a can eat about a half cup of dense Protein and I am filled for hours. I got hunger pangs but at around 9 weeks post-op, they went away With that being said, I heard there is a very very minor difference in the sizes (we are talking millimeters.....the thickness of a dime) Good luck and do your research. you don't need GERD to get worse!

    Self pay to insurance?

I went through insurance with zero hoops. Just a meeting with the surgeon, dietician, and a psych eval. All done in one day, was approved less than a week later. So def worth looking into. My deductible was only $500.

    Self pay to insurance?

I have gone from self-pay, tried to switch to insurance then back to self-pay. For me the attempted switch to insurance was a royal pain. BCBS, or at least my specific carrier provided coverage, but the requirements were to rigid. For example, I had already done 5 months with my current primary care physician in early 2019 for the “doctor supervised” diet. I exceeded all other requirements and already completed the psychiatric evaluation. I got cold feet at the last minute and decided to attend a weight loss boot camp for 10 weeks as an attempt to avoid weight loss surgery. That was a BIG mistake, my doctor warned me I would gain the weight right back and that is exactly what happened by the end of 2019. I decided to I move forward with surgery in 2020, was going to do self-pay at first since the weight loss boot camp was also self-payed. After going through my medical records for the last 3 years I felt I had enough documentation to use my employer provided health insurance so I immediately contacted BCBS for approval. According to BCBS since I did not see my doctor during the time I was attending the weight loss boot camp (which was in another state), I would be required to restart the doctor supervised diet requirement which I was told back in Feb/2019 was three months but now, for whatever reason in 2/2020 it was increased to 6 months? 🤪 If I want BCBS to pick up the tab I must start over, that would be 7 months with the doctor since the first visit does not count, another 30 to 60 days for the approval process and 30 days with the surgeons office or more to get all pre-requisite tests completed and the surgery scheduled. VERY FRUSTRATING! I have appealed but was told it may be 30 to 60 days until I get a decision. When I ask my doctor for advise he simply looked at me and said “I wouldn’t wait…” so I am not, back to self-pay.
  15. I'm wondering what foods people struggle with, even when in the green zone? I had my third fill a few weeks ago and have been doing pretty well, but recently have had issues with some fish, and also quinoa (which had previously each been fine). Only really at dinner time, been able to eat chicken, breads, fruit etc with no issue. Just trying to get an idea of what people accept as not bein able to eat and alternatively, when they think they're band is too full?
  16. I've been on the preop diet since Monday. I started two days early to combat Thanksgiving meals. I has been really difficult. The first day I was all hyped up to start, so it wasn't that bad. The toughest thing is just wanting to chew something. I am on three Labrada Body Lean shakes a day. I have a cup of broth in between when my hunger spikes. My paper didn't specifically say I could have broth but it said choose sugar free water flavors, and I just assumed broth is a sugar free water flavor... My minimum water intake is 64 oz, but I usually get in a gallon. My hardest times are watching food commercials (I never noticed just how many come on during commercials breaks). Second hardest thing are when other people in my office are bringing in fast food, and using microwave to heat up their lunch. I wish my diet included a high protein/low carb meal, like chicken and broccoli. I think just having some actual food to eat would help. I don't actually crave sweets or carbs, it's proteins like chicken, tuna, or beef.

Preop Gastric Surgery Diet Is Awful!

I am in my second week, but the first few days were hell. I have add more protien by eating hard boiled eggs and that has helped. I do sleep alot more and i am tired all day. It does get easier the second week just give it time, but it is NOT easy at all. After surgery you will have these same issues so this is preparing you for that.
  18. I did not do the two week pre-op because my MBI was 36 and the doctor didn't think I needed it. He said that he was a little surprised because my liver was somewhat enlarged. I did do a liquid diet for two days prior to the surgery.
  19. I did a 24 hour diet before my surgery. I just couldn't see doing liquids for two weeks I would have went crazy.

    Spouse

My spouse didn't know enough about the WLS process in order to know about supporting the idea when it came up. Fortunately, it was not originated by me, it was by my PCP, but there was still a lot of hesitation. I actually had to play it cool for a few months until the idea gained traction. She would ask me if I had thought about the decision and I would be like, "I"m just going to go to the nutrition sessions and learn more, you're welcome to come along" and any possible moment that I could get her there, I would always make it feel like her decision. After a few months of this, I finally saw my moment and took it. She was totally on board by then, but had I not been patient through the whole process, pardon the pun, I don't think I would have gained the support I received and still have to this day 7 weeks post-op. I hope this helps, good luck.

    12hrs to VSG Day!

Bless your heart. Going back to work so soon. I took 3 weeks of FMLA. The way I feel today….. I will need every second of it????
  24. I check in for my surgery tomorrow (3/22)! at 8am and am supposed to be the first person in!!! WHOOOOHOOOOOO! My birthday is Sunday (3/27) and this is by far the best gift I could have given myself. I had internalized stress a coped with a side of junk food for a while and I am beyond ready to get myself back on track. I gave my friends and family a disclaimer a few weeks ago that I am no longer holding my tongue and can not continue to be EVERYONE's emotional go to person- I was trying to be there for everyone but neglected myself tremendously. But on a lighter note...how long did you stay in the hospital? I am expecting 2 days and planning to return to work Monday of next week (3/28) since I work a desk job.

    Surgery Date SET!

I went into my two week pre-op weighing 311.4 and lost down to 297.8 by the day of surgery. I was very excited for my new journey, but never expected to feel as bad as I did post-op. Sept 8th 2014 was the day! I felt terrible once awake. Horrible nausea that nothing would get rid of, vomiting, chest pain, and dizziness... I hope you all have a better time with this. My chest hurt so bad they called in the cardiologists to run tests! I ended up with round the clock labs being drawn, anti-nausea meds and pain meds being given like clockwork! Nothing seemed to help the chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, stomach spasms, gas etc! I couldn't urinate, couldn't pass gas, nor would my bowels move. I spent 48hrs in tears due to the overwhelming pain. I couldn't even keep down my ice chips on day two! By the 3rd day I started to feel a little better. The first 2 were the worst! The gas that they fill your abdominal cavity up with was a ruthless butch! The gas can't escape, so it just sits there and causes horrible, unimaginable pain. They finally gave me some morphine and Ativan to knock me out, and it was oh so sweet relief too! I was finally able to fall asleep, and ignore the pain even if it was only for a minute or two. On the third day the dizziness was very present, but everything else was clearing up. I actually felt like getting up, showering, and walking the halls by day 3. I wasn't sure how'd I'd feel once they removed the pain pump from my abdomen, but I found out by the end of day 3. Once they removed nearly 12 inches of pump cord from inside my chest cavity I began to feel the numbing sensation wear off. It became all too real that someone took a blade and sliced me 7 times with it. Not just scratching the surface but rearranging my internal organs. By discharge time on day 3 I finally was able to pass gas! I was so bloated, and fluid-logged due to the non-stop IV fluids, medications, antibiotics, etc! I walked out of the hospital weighing 305; I went in at 297.8! I didn't have a bowel movement until day 4, with the aid of a little laxative. I didn't want to risk C.Diff.! Today is day 5 post-op and I've finally gotten the hospital water weight off! This morning I hit 296.0 on the scale! I'm still very sore, but I couldn't be happier about my new life that is now within reach!
