I had a gastric bypass in 2007. I had a revision 9 days ago. I was supposed to start regular liquids 2 days ago for the next week then advance to softs for 4 weeks. Tonight I had to attend a memorial service for a friend and out of depression/bad habits I ate some chips and salsa and a bite of a quesadilla at dinner when everyone gathered. I threw up twice before leaving the restaurant, once on the way home, and twice when I got here. I know the seriousness of what I've done, but at the time I really wasn't thinking. I have no doubt that everything I ate has come up by now but my stomach is still severely hurting...like a cramping in the bowel area. It almost feels like needing to poop and you're trying to hold it in. I have eliminated that as a cause of the pain already. I'm thinking I might have seriously hurt something. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Should I be concerned enough to contact the doctor? I just want the hurting to stop.

Twisted/flip-flopped sleeves
donewithdieting replied to ctsleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was going to write what ali above wrote. The stomach part that remains after a sleeve is attached to our insides and doesn't twist. Only bypass pts have twisted bowel and can be life threatening. -
This is an excellent topic!! Earlier this year I had weight loss revision-gstuc bypass reviison and only lost like 10 pounds !!!! What ??????? My first surgery in 2010 I lost like 120lbs. I was 333 the day of surgery. A year later I was 243. Ii am now on Qsymia and after 30 days on it I have lost 15 pounds and went from 233 to 218. I hope and pray that I can keep this up until I am at least 150lbs,then I will be satisfied. Maybe I can shrink my pouch and better control my weight because of the weight loss surgery tool. I will try and keep everyone posted. I wished that others would also share their experiences with this aas well. I wished that I had found doctors who would have allowed me to immediately get on the weight loss pills post op and this weight would have been off a long time ago. But anyway, I am doing what I can right now so...if nothing else, I will go and have another surgery......

I had my bypass surgery in April 2017. I lost 60 pounds then due to precancerous cells being found I've had to have a hysterectomy, Sept 2017. I've now gained back 40 of my pounds. I need help getting back on track. Any suggestions? Sent from my LM-X410(FG) using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi all. I'm from Mississauga. I just had my doctor referral today. So the journey is just beginning. Don't know if ohip will cover sleeve or bypass for me, and every day, I change my mind about which one I'd prefer. So confused!! Looking forward to knowing you through this journey.

If I end up dumping after I get the sleeve, it will probably end up being a good thing for me as well. I would avoid sugar to keep me honest too. Funny thing is I was talking to my friend today who had RNY, and she can have sugar in limited quantities without the dumping. So I guess really whether the one gets the sleeve or bypass, it's solely up to how your body will respond to the surgery. Kudos to everyone who is sticking to their diet! I really hope that I can get my head together to resist the foods that made me this way in the first place. The struggle is real! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
from lap band to bypass,,anyone?
Dream4tc replied to sapphire12305's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am revising. I was previously banded Nov 2011. Lost 80 pounds, but developed problems with my band about 2.5 yrs out. I hit the green zone once. Long story short, my band cause so many reflux issues, heartburn all the time, vomiting. It eventually slipped and I just had it removed in August 2015. I am revising to bypass 11/30/15. I initially wanted sleeve, but because of the damage caused from my band with my reflux issues, the sleeve would make reflux worse. I am happy with my bypass decision. I should have chosen bypass in the first place. I am told that revision patients lose a little bit slower than a new WLS patient. We shall see. -
I had a revision surgery from sleeve (2012) to gastric bypass Jan 29 2018. I am on a liquid diet until I see my surgeon on the 14th. With the sleeve, I didn’t feel hungry at all after surgery and was barely able to drink. But with this surgery, I am starving!!! It’s such torture cooking for and watching my fiancé and kids eating and not being able to have anything but liquids. It’s been such an emotional battle for me and I find myself literally crying over it. Am I the only one or has anyone else gone through this? Thanks!

Hello there. My thoughts are just from what I have read and patients to whom I have spoken. The banding apparently is the first choice for sweet eaters. Is there a reason that you are not mentioning the gastric bypass? I will tell you a bit of my story, if you will. I realized that one of the main reasons for not considering surgery originally was that I thought it meant I had been a failure. No one else's opinions really came into my thought process. I had lost over 100lbs on my own in 2004. Healthy means - diet and exercise. It was not actually that difficult for me. I was just in that zone, I guess. Well, after having the weight off for about a year I ended up having a hysterectomy. I was laid up for several months and gained the majority of my weight back and the remaining portion of over the last couple of years. All but 25 lbs of it! Since 2006 it has seemed virtually impossible to lose anything substantial. The discussion groups, meetings with the various staff, etc. have been invaluable. So, sit down with yourself, keep a clear head and figure things out. Ask all the questions you need. The WLS is just a tool, a means to aid you to your goal. That is another important factor: what is your goal? why do you want to lose weight? and how important is it to you? Hope I helped a bit. Keep us up to date. I will be at the discussion group in November, I believe. Take care of your health!

I mentioned before that Lexie, my only friend I've told about me getting bariatric surgery, told me that she heard the "sleeve" was better than the "band." My gastroenterologist said the same thing and wanted me to look into it and talk to the surgeon about the sleeve option. I mentioned it to the counselor today and she briefly said that she sees very few Gastric Bypass patients any more as most patients are choosing the band or the sleeve. She said it's been 50/50 on band vs. sleeve patients. She admitted that there's been more WL issues with the band patients (slower loss, not any loss, and band failure) in HER practice but she was quick to state that it doesn't mean that it isn't good and won't work. She simply said that in her practice there that the sleeved patients lose weight faster and have fewer WL issues apparently. She agreed with my gastro's advice in speaking with the surgeon and deciding what would be best for me. She told me to research both, have pros and cons, and analyze the options. Then have a list of questions for the surgeon when meeting with him. I planned to do that any way and I didn't get the feeling she was pushing sleeve. I think she was being very honest with me about her experience with both sets of patients which I appreciate. Here's my initial PRO/CON list for Sleeve and Band... (after I research more, I'll likely update and/or change and fix my list!) SLEEVE Pros: 1. One surgery, no "fills" (so I won't need to tote my toddler with me in for regular fills.) 2. Decrease in "ghrelin" hormone that induces hunger due to stomach portion removal 3. Faster weight loss (more immediate results) 4. No "bandster hell" 5. Much higher success rate associated with this procedure. 6. My friend and one of my dr's recommended this procedure and thought it might be the better option for me. Cons: 1. No way to fix or reverse at all 2. Staples may pop, cause leaking, or fail 3. No long term data including effects on pregnancies 4. There is still a possibility/likelihood that the sleeve will stretch out and may need revision later. 5. Hernias apparently more common with this procedure lately. 6. I haven't researched the dietary guidelines post op so I have no idea what the longterm eating management includes. (Maybe I'll research that next and do a post on the differences of that.) BAND Pros: 1. Reversible/removable 2. No removal of anything 3. Necessary dr appt followup (with fills) will cause constant analyzing of program/plan and communication with surgeon 4. As I need it, I can go in and get it adjusted tighter to meet my needs. 5. Two doctors recommended this procedure over sleeve or GB for me due to my medical history. Cons: 1. Possibility of infection of band OR port 2. Regular followup and fill appointments 3. Bandster Hell and the months it will take to get to Sweet Spot. 4. Possibility of necessary revision to sleeve or whatever..(have read several posts online of 3 and 4 year post banders going in for gastric bypass, sleeve, etc.) 5. May not solve my hunger issue. 6. Have heard from more than one person that as they got closer to goal- their port site or actual port became more visible- yikes! 7. Over fills.. this sort of worries me. I don't want to get overzealous and get over filled and then have to race back in to get unfilled and then wait weeks to get filled again. 8. The waiting between fills. I understand why it is set up that way but it doesn't mean I have to like it. This is just my preliminary thoughts on both. I'm not an expert, I haven't decided yet, and I don't even know if the surgeon will think I'm a candidate for the sleeve. I'm starting to consider it as an option though. I've got some research to do.

I had a follow up with the surgeon's office today. They submitted my info to insurance last week seeking authorization. 2 hours before my appointment, they got the call that I was approved! I really thought they might have to fight a little. My BMI is 40, but they required 5 years of obesity. I've been a yo yo dieter since I was like 9 years old. When I looked over my 5 year history with the doctors office, there were years I was in a decent range and then years I wasn't. She said it went through smoothly though. I have thought about surgery many times over the past 15 years, but I always decide against it. In November of last year, I decided enough was enough, it was time to pursue. I felt so discouraged though when they said I had to wait six months and do the supervised diet. My first appointment wasn't until January. The six months wasn't too bad. I was wishy washy a bit during that time. Do I really need to go this route? Is it too extreme? Will it even work for me? And it gave me enough time to come to a firm decision that this is the right move. I only recently told my husband about it. He probably thinks the process went very quickly. They gave me a surgery date of July 20th today. However, I think I need to change it and go the following week if they can. I'm supposed to go away that weekend and I doubt I'd be up for that. I'm considering cancelling our trip instead. I'll see what my husband says tonight. I really am excited! I can't believe my life is about to change! I get to be ME again and break out of this awful prison shell of a body!!!

Hi, I have just joined these forums and this is my first time posting, I hope I don;t do anything wrong! On 14th May 2014 I was given a Sleeve by Dr Mannur at Homerton Hospital, London, UK. Prior to the pre op diet I weighed 34 Stone 4lb at the age of 25 and things were desperate, I was hugely struggling with day to day life. I followed the 'Milk Diet' for 31 days and on the day of Surgery I weighed exactly 31 stone. I had great success with the sleeve and before too long I weighed 21 stone 4 lb and I was happy. I went away to America on a holiday and over indulged on the bad things. I thought it was ok as I would get back into the swing of things when I got home, but I didn't. My weight crept back up to 29 stone and I felt hopeless. I knew it was time for change so sorted my head out and got back into the swing of things. The weight was coming back off and I joined Slimming World for the extra support. Then, in 2017 my surgeon told me that he wanted to perform a DS on me. I was against that as I had read up about it and personally didn't feel comfortable. He then suggested a Bypass which I agreed to. I had the surgery last week (17th April 2018) and on the day of surgery I weighed 24 stone. I had a different surgeon this time, Dr John Loy. My big question is what will my diet be like in 6 weeks time when I am back on solid food? I find plenty of information from people that have had a Sleeve or Bypass - but not both! I am hugely excited for my future, but I want to prepare myself for my new life and exactly what it will be like. Thank you for any help you can provide and sorry for the long post!

I had gastric bypass revision on June 6th. I lost 16 pounds after surgery and have not lost a pound since. I'm very frustrated. Is this normal? Are my expectations out of whack? Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App

I am 3 1/2 weeks out from Gastric Bypass and am having terrible pain all around the large incision. I would of thought by now I would be pain free. By the end of the day it is almost unbearable! Does anyone else have this issue?

Anyone have partial blockage after surgery? Bypass on 8/1. About two weeks ago, was severely constipated but managed to evacuate most of my bowels though I felt it wasn't entirely. Since then I've had either diarrhea or string poop, so think there's still something blocking my bowels partially. Ugh this is gross! Anyhow I'm doing miralax three times a day and a suppository every couple of days. Smooth move tea too. Will this eventually work or do I just need to go to my gastroenterologist? I'd rather avoid that if possible but don't want to make myself sick.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. In general the requirement for liquid intake is 64-80 ounces per day. But many things count towards this total. It is Water and milk. It is the liquid in the Protein shakes. It is the water you drink when you take the various Vitamins and meds throughout the day. It is the water content of Soups. It is tea, decaf coffee, Crystal Light flavored drinks, etc. So it is generally not hard to reach this goal. The protein requirement is generally 75-90 grams of protein per day. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. Later after a month or two you can add Protein Bars as an option in meeting your protein goals. -
From the album: 2017 ulcers removed/ gastric bypass
So I have blood clots and needed bleeding ulcers removed from my stomach so that I can take my meds. Which basically resulted in gastric bypass. I've had Vsg aug 12, 2012 so 5 years ago. Let's do it better this time. -
Many insurance policies are similar in their requirements for eligibility for Bariatric Surgery. According to my insurance policy: • Surgical treatment of obesity (bariatric surgery) is covered only if: - eligible enrollee is 18 of age or over - clinical records support a body mass index of 40 or greater (or 35-40 when there is at least one co-morbidity related to obesity). Applicable co-morbid conditions include the following: • Type II diabetes mellitus (by American Diabetes Association diagnostic criteria). • Refractory hypertension (defined as blood pressure of 140 mmHg systolic and or 90 mmHg diastolic) despite medical treatment with maximal dose of three antihypertensive medications. • Refractory hyperlipidemia (acceptable levels of lipids unachievable with diet and maximum doses of lipid lowering medications). • Obesity–induced cardiomyopathy. • Clinically significant obstructive sleep apnea. • Severe arthopathy of the spine and or weight bearing joints (when obesity prohibits appropriate surgical management of joint dysfunction treatable but for obesity. So I tend to agree with @Seagull. You may have sleep apnea and not really know it. I did. My wife is a light sleeper and my snoring for years kept her awake at night. This was one of the conditions corrected by my RNY gastric bypass surgery, along with my high blood pressure, diabetes and GERD.

I'm going to my first appointment on Wednesday to FINALLY start the process to have surgery. I know that there is no definitive answer and everyone is different, but I was curious about how much weight I could expect to lose within the first 5 months? I'm only asking because I'm going to be in a wedding in November of next year and I'm not sure what is going to happen with my dress. Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App
