I agree with babs. I was banded on March 24. I have had no fill and they installed the band with no fill. If I eat too fast I know it, if I eat too big of a bite I know it. It hurts! I work at a culinary school so sometimes its pretty hard not to go taste this or that. Yesterday they made sugar free cupcakes and brought me one. It was nice and warm, right out of the oven (no frosting, just plain white cupcake). It was so delicious that I gobbled it right down and seconds later... i felt it coming back up. I had my head hanging over the trash can for about 5 minutes! I forget about the band occasionally and that is my punishment!!! I have only done it twice now and the first time was because I took too big of a bite and did not chew well enough. Good luck!

I too am a fast eater. My entire life people constantly say, "slow down!". Grrr. I hate that. I've been trying to take smaller bites and to slow down. I haven't mastered the not drinking while eating task though. I think I just need to not pour myself a glass of Water or iced tea when it's time to eat. That may cure it. Also, I guess I'll have to ask the waiter/waitress to remove my water glass before the meal. Remove all temptation.

Help- I'm Not Feeling The Restriction
mommy794 replied to LindaL's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was the same, drinking relatively fast and easy, no problems! even after I was eating some normal foods I still felt like I could eat ok just way smaller amounts. Now I'm 8.5 weeks out and feeling more restriction even when drinking... like last nite I drank about 8 oz of my high protein milk before bed too fast and I had to throw up alittle. So it definitly evolves over time! -
Aetna fasttrack?
Tuckersmommy2010 replied to kariew28's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Aetna. Before being banned I had to go to a doctor for 6 months ( Seeing him once per month) and go on a diet. I also had to do a dietitian consult and psychiatric consult ( Which i did in the 5th month) . I would first choose who you are going to have perform the surgery and go to them for the 6 ( or however many) monthly visits. From what they told me, they have a special form to fill out and keep to send in the the insurance company and most doctors office ( like a primary doc ) doesn't document the things they should and one mess up could ruin the whole thing. They have to write down weight , new eating habits , and a few other things. There isn't a way to fast track it... I wish there was!! My time actually went fast. My one biggest advice would be to really work on the pre op diet. I didn't lose any weight in those 6 months. It would have made the big changes to come much easier if i would have worked on new habits then rather than going "cold turkey" LOL I was also approved on the first try. It did take about 2 weeks however! Best of luck! -
At Or Near Goal Question
farmgirl04 replied to his_spirit's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost 100+ pounds about 15 years ago. I fell in love with running, and with a distance of 5 miles around our 'block' that is what I did everyday no matter what. Well, except when I was training for marthons. I was down to 117, and in tiny clothes. I stopped having my period, developed all kinds of health issues, allergies, and finally fractured my foot. I look back and see pictures of someone happy... but way too thin. When I had to stop running because of my foot the weight started back on. Fast forward to now. My lb doc told me his goal for me is 145! A far cry from 117, but when we talked we agreed on 135. I definately had an eating disorder back then and will have to guard against it as I get down there. You sound kind of like me. I think that if I had a more realistic goal I could have maintained it, but the only way I could have stayed at 117 was to run it off. While fun it was not good, or healthy. I remember thinking (honestly) that I would rather die than gain my weight back, seriously. Scary place. I think if I, or my family, see that happening to me again I will force myself to see someone who specialises in anorexia, because, honestly, that is where I was. I do know that even now I see my body (at times) as bigger now than it was almost 40 pounds heavier. We all are battling our own food/weight issues or we wouldn't be on this journey. Hopefully I've grown a little wiser with age. Maybe my story will provide you with some additional insight. -
Well, it happened....mini Stuck episode!
topazz posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First time and hoping the last time for me! I got a fill a week ago, that is finally giving me some restriction. I can feel that when I eat certain foods, they do not go down as smoothly as before, so I have been extremely conscious of making sure to eat small bites and chewing well. Well, today I was in a rush and took a piece of roast beef for lunch with some veggies. I just took a bite and the doorbell rang. I got up to answer the door, and I swallowed way too fast, and it was not pretty! I had those horrible pains in my chest and back, a little sliming, and then finally after 10 minutes, I threw up a little bit, and it was over. I kept taking deep breaths and walking around until it was over. Whew!! It was awful! I've consisntently read about these episodes, and never truly understand the feeling until now! The one good thing out of all of this, was that it was the UPS man at the door bringing me a package that contained some new clothes that are 3 sizes smaller than what I have worn! So at least I got to smile a bit after it was all over! -
Starting my journey
MrsGloMartin replied to Schwinngirl1987's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am doing well. I'm on day six of my pre-fast diet and I'm experiencing hi's and low's as is to be expected when you change the way you eat so suddenly. I'm having periods of energy burst where I feel like i can move mountains and then I'm feeling so hungry that I can eat a horse hoofs and all (lol). When I feel this way I'll either find something to do to occupy my mind or I'll go out for a walk. After all it is a lifestyle change that I have to adjust to if I wish to be successful in overcoming my addiction to food and obesity. One thing I did was to start eating less one week prior to the strt of my pre-op diet. It made it a little easier as my stomach had gotten used to not being full all of the time. Find something that works for you and try to stick to it because we are all on this journey together but what works for one person may not work for the other. All the best to you, God bless. -
No idea how some woman say they had sex so fast after surgery. I had bypass and no sex for at least 2 months . Everything hurt too much!

Houston looking for friends to do 5ks my only goal is not to come in last
Short and Chunky replied to rayanne's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I'm in Florida so I can't walk with you but I have been doing 5ks and I love them. I walk slow/fast/ trott whatever...I just want to finish (and not be last - I do have some pride !). It has become my #1 exercise. I get fresh air, meet people and loose some weight along the way. My favorites are the Gate River Run and the Donna Breast Cancer events - both have well over 15,000 participants. I feel like a marathoner because I participate and when you finish you get a medal which I proudly hang in my office at work. Good luck and way to go !!!!!! Melinda in Florida -
PB = Productive Burp (Who the hell came up with THIS term?)...This is when food goes down too fast or is not chewed enough and gets caught at the opening into the pouch. When it gets STUCK you get a knot-type feeling in mid-chest which indicates that the food isn't going anywhere. Sometimes you can suffer through it and it will go down slowly. Sometimes you need to go to the bathroom and "get rid of it" for relief. It is like a vomit without some of the accompanied "nastiness"....the food somes back in the same condition it went down in...just chewed...there is no stomach acid with it (like a regular puke...that nasty sour stuff)...and it is often NOT accompanied by full stomach contractions like with a regular vomit, more like it comes from the throat up and kindof rolls out of your mouth. The PB food coming up can be accompanied by sliming.... Sliming = When the stomach senses that food is coming, it releases mucus into the mouth and esophagus and stomach in order to help facilitate the movement of the food down the canal, greasing the pipes, if you will. When food is stuck, it's like a backed up toilet. The stomach goes "Oh, here comes food!": and starts secreting, but when the food doesn't move, the mucus backs up into your throat and mouth. You wind up have a huge mouthful of thick saliva (oh the bubbles you can blow! :-) )that must be spit out. Sometimes sliming precedes a PB, sometimes the food is just slow going down and you slime a little. Suffice it to say, it's worth a trip to the bathroom to spit it out. WORD OF CAUTION: NEVER NEVER NEVER try to "flush" stuck food down with a liquid. It works on a regular body, but not the way we are constructed now. It is a recipe for disaster. Like throwing a gallon of Water into a clogged up toilet, it's gonna do nothing but sit on the clog and come back up.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Surgery Moved To This Friday!!! Freaking Out!!
littlerlou replied to littlerlou's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did they call you with a time? Are you suppose to fast all day tomorrow? I havent heard a thing! I called the office to left a voicemail..but nothing yet. -
I have after my first fill. I have had 3 so far on english muffin and then again on chicken. Need to chew these more or forego althogher. Well I won't forgo chicken. If it's mosit, or in soup or has sauce on it, then no problem. Still must take small bites and chew well. The PB is very uncomfortable, but it came pretty fast. Some of it would come up, then still some pressure/pain, then I take a small sip of water and that seems to give it the needed fluid boost to help it come up.

Full Report of Surgery on May 25th
NJGirl32 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First, thank you so much for the support and encouragement! Now here's the details: Surgery scheduled for 1:30 but didn't go in until 2pm. My husband stayed by my side up until the point and gave me a kiss as they wheel me in. There was a small TV screen and lots of nurses. I remember them giving me a shot through my IV and thinking they better get me on the operating table quick because I know this works fast. Sure enough that was the last thing I remember. I woke up in recovery thinking no way is this reversal because I was in a lot of pain and couldn't imagine goingthrough it again, but Part of my problem was an IV that was fully funcioning. They asked how much pain I was in and I said a 7 (1-10), but I would highly advised you to not feel like you're exaggerating and be honest so they give youmeds faster. I was on morphine drip but they gave me a needle of pain kilers with helped a lot. I was in recovery 2 hours until they managed the pain while my husband was in the waiting room. They didn't know he wasinthe waiting room and I think he could have been in recovery with me. So ask when you're in recovery is yr spouce can be with you. They took me to a private room. I was pretty dopey and at one point I just really wanted to sleep so at 7pm I told my Hubby to go home. But I couldn't sleep the entirenight because I had to keep pushing the morphine button every 10 minutes. The best thing I brought to the hospital was my ipod because I could close my eyes and relax. ... -

I started the process about a month ago. I went for a consult to see Dr. Artuso. 1st time meeting him. He answered all my 20 questions I had and said if this was want I want to do then I would be a perfect candidate. Leaving his office the receptionist who are amazing told me there was a openings to the needed consults the next day. I got my cardio and pulmonary consult done the next day. Received my letter of necessity from my primary on Friday of that week (talk about timing, when I called his office he was leaving that saturday for 3 weeks out of the country dr's without borders. ) I had my CXR that weekend. I had the echiogram done on Tuesday and a stress test on Wednesday. Saw my cardiologist on Wednesday and he said all is go and given his approval. Saw the nutritionist on Thursday and after a long chat she said I was an excellent candidate. I expressed a concern not getting approved as I do not have any comorbities. Not to steal someones quote but I too seem to be a healthy fat person. My BMI is 46.9 percent. My knees and feet hurt all the time. Even at night when I have them elevated. I work 2 jobs. One is a supervisor in a group for the state home. I often work over 8hours a day. Sometimes I am on my feet all day running around. My other job is a work as a LPN for a nursing agency doing per diem work. That is a 8 hrs of nonstop go go go. I barely get a chance to sit down to eat or even go to the bathroom. My decision to get the band came after a long thought of over 5yrs. I have had this dr. number for that long. I have talked to nurses who have had the gastric bypass. I dont know anyone personally who has had the lapband. I went 2yrs ago to a seminar at Westchester medical center sat thru it. Walking out feeling like you know what.. "I put this weight on by my own hand and mouth I need to take it off" I joined a gym days later. I would go to the gym 5-6 days a week and pound the hell out of myself. 2yrs later I had made little dent. I had gone to my primary and had routine bloodwork. Hoping my thryroid was to blame.. NOTHING. Back to the gym I go. Fast forward to this summer. In June I was at my sisters house. Wihin a matter of 1 hour I broke the stairs to her pool, and inflatable floatation device and 1 stair going up a set up steps. Thank god I was amongst family. I was humiliated. That was a breaking point for me. I am tired of living life not to the fullest. I would rather now sleep then go out shopping or stay at home watching tv. My feet hurt more often than not. So now I wait...:confused2:

How can you get your metabolism back up?`
puddin replied to puddin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Jack, I did a resting metabolic rate test (not sure of the technical name) - the university I work for will do it for $20. I had to fast for 24 hours and then laid down on a mat while they put this plastic hood over my head for about a half hour. I have no idea how it works. The idea, however, is for them to test your resting metabolic rate. I'm sorry I can't tell you more than what I learned immediately after: My Basal Metabolic Rate (resting rate) was about 1,200 calories/day. I'll find out more when I meet with him again next week. I'll keep you posted after that. Jacqui, I think you may be right about shaking up my routine. I do pretty much the same routine each week: I alternate upper and lower body workouts every other day. At first I was sore every time I worked out and now I hardly ever get sore. Maybe that's what I need to do. I work as hard as I possibly can, but perhaps I need to do something different. As far as cardio goes, I've heard the same about doing interval training. I do 30 minutes every other day (not on the days of weight training and maybe that's part of the problem) of interval training - and my heart rate is usually around 160-165. I work my butt off! But maybe it's time to go a bit longer or to do something other than the eliptical machine. -
Congrats on making it into the 200's! Isn't that an awesome feeling? I too have to eat extremely slow. I have gotten sick eating too fast. Good luck as you continue on your journey!

wieght loss after pregnancy
kakatlady612 replied to JackieBurleson's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
This may not help much but walk. Either push in a stroller or put him in a backpack. Practice using his weight as a cute cuddly barbell, make him your exercise buddy. Have you cut, back,or eliminated snacks, carbs and fast food? I know as a young frazzled mom it's easier to grab something quick. I'm probably, preaching to the choir but I'm now a obese 72 year old granny and i,know of what I speak. You don't want to be sick and tired of being sick and tired. I'm having to,learn to be healthier myself. I have tried fad and structuralized diets, nothing kept,it off so,i' m facing surgery at this point in my life. I know you probably don't want to be preached at but please, learn by my example. I will probably end up with baggy saggy skin yet you will tone back,up at your age. Sorry I am going on and on but I wish I could have seen the future when I first started gaining weight. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app -
Skin on my chiny, chiny, chin, chin.
gowalking replied to Tssiemer1's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I didn't read all the responses so you may be getting duplicate info here...but one year out from lapband surgery and with a loss of about 100 lbs., I looked in the mirror and saw an old and saggy lady looking back. Fast forward two years...another 40-50 lbs. down, and with the help of a therapist and just time...I still have a turkey neck but it's not horrible. I did tighten up some and with makeup and nice outfits, I don't think anyone is really paying attention. Besides...over the last 18 months, I went back into the dating world and not a single man I met ever seemed to be aware of any sag or wrinkles. I got more than my share of compliments and the guy I'm in a committed relationship with, who has seen all of me...thinks I'm the sexiest thing out there. I'm telling you...we are hardest on ourselves. I bet your neck area will be more than fine over the next year or so. If by next year, you still feel awful about this area, go check out plastic surgeons. Good luck! -
One week out whats "normal?"
Bob2013 replied to supercomik's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Right now everything is swollen. The small path(sleeve) that use to be your stomach isnt much wider than your pinky or a ball point pen due to the swelling. And also if you had a hiatal hernia repair it is also adding to the restriction. Added to this is the fact that when you fill the pouch at the bottom of the sleeve, the air in the stomach has to escape. So if you eat too fast the food going down will be working against the air coming up and cause the sharp pains you may be feeling. As the swelling goes down over the next couple weeks/months the pain will subside and eventually go away. Very small bites or sips. Basically just the tip of the spoon. Some people use a baby spoon to help them minimize their bites. Eat slowly. Up to a couple minutes between bites. Allow the air the food is displacing to escape (burping between bites helps). Unfortunately this may be a bit embarrassing but its helps alot. And to be honest, you should probably try and get use to burping. 7 months out and I still have to let out a few quiet belches now and then when I eat certain foods like soups of chili. I should also add, when drinking, use a glass or cup when possible. It makes the sipping easier. -
I had my surgery on May 3, 2010 and I started this adventure a year earlier trying to convince my company that this was the right thing to do! I was pretty convincing and they aproved my surgery. On 4/19/2010 I weighed in at 345lbs with a BMI of 49.6. I currenty as of this date weigh 280lbs. I have lost more weight in the last 6 weeks than I had over the past 4 years. My wife said I am loosing it 2 fast but I feel good! This was not without some pain and frustration but that you probably know already. I felt like I had made the mistake of my life the day after surgery but I have since changed my mind. Had I not taken this step I probably would not be here in 3 to 5 years. My wife had a lap band done in 1996 and had great weight loss until 2005 when it broke and damaged her stomach. She had to have an emergency gastric bypass but has had some issues with this surgery. The picture above was from 2006 and I have not had a picture of me taken since. That will be changing! I am having some problems with eating 6 weeks after surgery and I am still having to puree all my food. I have tried multiple times to eat small amounts of food that is not ground up to a pulp and have had no success. I will be seeing my Dr. on Wednesday and this is one issue I want him to talk to me about. I also have a wierd experience when I eat with my nose starts running and I then have to sneeze for about 10 minutes. I thought maybe I had a a food alergie but it happens no matter what I eat. Is this a problem with anybody else? Let me know. I am walking 3.5 miles every day and today I pushed it to 5 miles with no side affects. I plan to step it up a mile a week until I get to the wall! In closing I want to hear from some of you about what issues you are having and maybe we can work together to help each other. Thanks for the support! Jim P.S. the 1SunMoney name is my Poker name.

Good luck & good job on finishing your research! Yes, most definitely plan for all your Vitamins to be CHEWABLE. Everyone has their preference, I prefer 2x Flinstone (with Iron) a day. Not sure about the Vitamin D thing, so eh.. but I take 2x X-tra Strength Tums a day for calcium. I drink milk too. I did Slim Fast when I was on liquids, as I have yet to find any other brand of diety drinks that tasted ok to me. Not familiar with juice plus, and I don't take it.. not to say you shouldn't, your doc knows best! But I have no input on that.

Did I Stretch My Stomach Back Out????
FamilyGuyNJ replied to kellkizzle21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At two weeks I was able to drink 3 sizeable gulps at a time. I would finish a 32oz Powerade Zero in about 40 minutes. I was worried that I was taking in too much too fast and that the sleeve wasn't giving me the restriction I needed. Needless to say, I was worried about nothing. If anything, I am fortunate, because I never had trouble staying hydrated and my restriction is in full effect when I eat. Good luck to you! -
It is Sunday June 6th I leave for Vegas on Tuesday of next week surgery is set for the 18th. I think I am more scared of the plane ride than the surgery. I have only been on a plane once and i was soooo uncomfortable at that time i was at my highest weight(350) and had a 6 month old on my lap. lol Hoping this time will be better. I am also nervous cause my husband is not coming with me, He is taking the tome off work to stay home with the kids. I am going with my parents my Mom is having the surgery too (at least i hope so she has to go see the heart doc again this week hoping they clear her to have it done) THATS LESS THAN 2 WEEKS AWAY!!!:scared0: Started my "diet" on friday doing good the shakes are ok :thumbup1: could b better. Had a pretty good week. Last weekend we had a yard sale and made a little money. Also got a little too much sun lol. We usually do better(we have a sale almost every year) I think picking a holiday weekend was not too smart. We are going to have another one closer to the fall. A friend gave me some clothes to 'put back' i keep looking at them and thinking there is no way i will fit into those (i am in a size 22/24 they are 18/20 and 14/16)
