THE SLOW LOSERS CLUB SUPPORT THREAD

For a young/fit person with no health issues who also takes no medication that can 'blur' the picture, I personally feel that 'calories in vs. calories out' can be much more easily tracked and trusted as an 'indicator'. That being said, after years of watching Dr. Now on my 600 Pound Life, I've seen him bust several people who were actually NOT tracking/weighing/truly accounting what their 'in' vs their 'out' was. I remember he didn't even really get into it with most of them on what their 'calories out' calculation was - he just focused on the 'in part' but I am in NO WAY comparing these patients that we could EASILY see for ourselves were sabotaging their weight loss efforts by simply continuing their food addiction that they were still choosing to NOT address. I am also a slow loser. I've hit that magical age...went into menopause at 40, take meds that interfere with weight loss, etc. etc. etc. I cannot remember if you posted about this, but when I went back to the nutritionist and my surgeon complaining about slow weight loss, I was shocked when they told me to UP my carbs and my calories. I was like 'say what??"...I'm hardly losing right now why would I want to INCREASE anything. I think I even vented on a thread and ppl like Fluffychix, etc. pointed out that maybe I should listen to my surgeon/nutritionist and gave it a try. I up'd my numbers and within a week while I was not losing much more quickly than I had been, my body was given a bit of a shake up...and my numbers picked up weekly for me. Just seeing ANY improvement, whether I was losing maybe 1 lb more a week or really....since my body likes to do a 3 week stall followed by a 3 to 5..sometimes 6 lb weight loss...my overall 'monthly number of pounds lost" did start improving. It was NOTHING that would make me one of the fast losers...but the fact that I actually increased my calories from 600-700 a day to be 800 instead...and increased my carbs from LESS THAN 30 (usually hit 20 grams or less) to 60 (YES SIXTY)....my body basically..needed to be shaken up. There is much written about 'set points' and a whole bunch of other physiological data that proves there is science behind these set points we get stuck at. I think Dr. Weiner's videos address some of these....I'd have to get Fluffychix's thoughts on this but I know she has a wealth of knowledge accumulated in that beautiful head of hers. Because I'm now 6 months out and my weight loss is still slow...I know I have one thing in my control that has been set aside this past week - exercise....but I'm going to start exploring IF. I think you mentioned that prior to surgery you were doing intermittent fasting and maybe something else (can't remember) and your weight loss was more back then (although the more we lose/have lost overall, it seems.the harder it is to get the remainder off) . I know Fluffy mentioned a couple of months ago that I was still a bit early out to be thinking about IF...or maybe another poster mentioned, but that is the next thing I'm looking at as my body, for DECADES has ALWAYS managed to adapt to whatever method I was using to lose weight and in my mind, it went into survival mode and decided "thou shalt not lose any more weight". So I know I need to adjust/shake things up when I truly KNOW and can document I am doing the right things...but nothing is happening. I also know I need to wait until nothing has literally happened for at least 3 to 4 weeks before I concern myself with a 'shake up' in what I'm doing. Keep staying the course...and maybe ignore the peeps talking about in vs. out as there are SO many variables that can cloud this..whether there are things we are missing or actual variables like health, age, medical conditions, medication, body set points, metabolic resistance, etc. - and talk with your nutritionist about what are some changes they might recommend based on your personal history and where you are at...
  2. Hip, this surgery is amazing. I have no doubt you could get yourself to any weight you'd like. If you wanted to lose more than 235, I'm willing to bet you would. I'm a revision and yes, I gained with my band. I'm far below my lowest with my band weight now - and really I don't feel like I'm bottoming out at all. Like Denise said, as long as you're following the sleever rules of eating, it will eventually come off. I stall here and there but over time I think I've grown very confident that it will come off down the line when it's time. I just dropped 8 Lbs in 3 days right now. Then I also just had a 3 week stall right before this too. Just hang tight, and give it some time.

4'11 HW 252 SW 218 CW 201 I had a 3 week stall and this is the first week of loss. I went from 233 to 218 on the pre-op and was 2 weeks late on my period post-surgery. I blame those two factors for my stall.

    OCTOBER 2014

@@Beni I have been reading the message boards and a lot of people talk about the 3 week stall. I feel like I've slowed down too! I don't know how much I've lost other than the two week weigh in. Hang in there! Maybe call your nutritionist? I see mine next week.

    So Dissappointed

Never fear. You've hit whats commonly known as the "3 week stall". During this week to two week period, you will see very little to no weightloss but you'll start seeing INCHES come off you. There are numerous posts on here about the three week stall you can search and read on. Just have to wait it out and keep doing what the doctor told you. I lost two pant sizes during my 3 week stall. So keep an eye on the inches!

GBrown, Hang in there, honey. I had mine on the 28th as well. I had a 3 pound weight gain over the last 2 days. Hello 3-week stall. *sigh* It stinks, but it will pass. If you're following your doctor/dietician's plans, it'll happen. Also, my surgeon told me they pumped me up with about 10 pounds of fluid when I was in the hospital - they probably did that for you, too. Just breathe and trust that your body will do what its supposed to do.
  7. Don't get discouraged! The 3 week stall is a bummer, but you will get past it. Just continue following your diet. RNY 15 weeks out--83 lbs. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Not losing anything? ?

It may be the 3 week stall, however this may not be a good idea. Your nutritionist should have given you some information on eating/drinking. You should be striving to reach the minimum Protein goals or 60 gm a day and 64 ounces of fluids. Initially you can't always trust your sleeve to tell you when you are hungry. Acid production sometimes feels very similar to hunger. Are you on a PPI such as prilosec or omeprazole? Failing to meet your protein goals can hinder your weight loss.
  10. I don't know how anyone could be overweight when they just need to get on a scale. We all know mental and emotional distress cannot be detrimental in any way. I mean if you have a 3 week stall, you are just as happy as a 10lb loss. Nobody ever has dove head first into a pint of ice cream, crying themselves to sleep thinking no matter what you do, you will always be fat. I mean, if some articles say it, you must do it. I guess I should tell everyone on keto that they can never lose weight eating all that fat. Research has shown low calorie is the only way. Sent from my SM-G930P using the BariatricPal App

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Had my 2 week follow up, everything is going great. I have to start my gall bladder medicine today and in 2 weeks my B12 injections. Everything I have had to eat has settled good, and I'm consistently drinking 50oz which he said was good. I have not been doing much activity, I figured I will start when the dreaded 3-week stall comes around and that will trick it lol, let's see if that works lol

Why am I a Slowwwwwwwww loser?

Thanks for posting. I have been on a 3 week stall. Hanging out at 199.5. It's like my body said, "hey, you are in onederland...we'll hang here for a while :-/ I see people losing twice as fast as me at the same starting BMI...all i can do is shrug and go on my own journey. I agree those of us who are losing slower simply aren't as vocal as those losing mega-lbs every week it's nice to hear i am not alone.

    Not losing anything? ?

I'm 10 weeks out, and I eat about 500-650 calories per day. I avoid Pasta, bread, rice, anything really sweet, I feel sick to my stomach when I attempt to consume them. 3 weeks into my journey I hit a stall, and now the weight is coming off very slowly. My 3 month appointment is scheduled for the first week of May and I'm nervous about going since my surgeon made me feel bad about my 3 week stall. I keep having stalls and they are frustrating but don't feel bad some people it doesn't drop off others it does! I am 10 weeks out also and I have dropped 71lb so far!
  14. 169.2. After starting the challenge with a 3 week stall & that big loss last week, I'm ok with not hitting my challenge goal. Thank you so much for doing this!! Can't wait for the next one!
  15. I have been reading these forums for a little while and read all about the 3 week stall. Well, clearly my body couldn't wait 3 weeks and I have been stalled since 7 days post op. What gives???!!!! I had lost 6 kilos post op, 9.6 kilos all up and was feeling good! Then bam. Stalled. I know its not going to last but it makes me feel crappy and like I am not doing the right thing! And yes, I know I have to stop replying on the scales as a measure. I have just been so big for so long, it felt so good seeing the scale go down and down. I was 146.6 kilos at the start of all this and now I am 137 kilos. Leaving the 140 kilos was a massive achievement as I never thought I would get out! Now I'm in the 130s ans want to be in the 120s. I just need to chill and let my body do its thing! Just needed to vent

30 days out and not losing

It's probably the normal "3 week stall". A stall that happens around week 3 and can last a couple of weeks. Essentially, your body is still adjusting to the surgery - kind of re-arranging itself. So while you may not be noticing a decrease on the scale, I bet you are losing inches. Are your clothes fitting any differently?
  17. Hi .... real talk, I'm frustrated, and more than a little scared. So yesterday was a bad day for everything but IF. But one day, whatever. But I'm scared of the big picture. I've basically in a stall for 3 weeks now. I don't want to be one of those "sky is falling" people, but, I'm scared right now about what this means. Ok, so over these 3 weeks I've had some bad days with poor choices. But on the whole I've made a lot of good choices too, and had more good days then bad. Even my bad days are nothing compared to pre WLS. My highest cal day was 1442. I only had 5 days out of 25 where I went over 1000 cals. On average over the last 25 days (to account for my 3 week stall, and then plus a few days), I averaged 554 calories. I'm scared. Is this just a set point? Have a wrecked my metabolism like in the Biggest Loser study? What is my long term quality of life if I have to eat sub 600 cals in order to even maintain? Sorry, I'm having a Monday morning pity party here.

    February Sleevers.... Check in!

I was sleeved 2/24/2014- I'm just now on soft foods. Drinking is still real tough for me due to the bubbles and burping. I can eat with no problems. I eat yogurts cottage cheese oatmeal. Broths are bothersome but creamy tomato or clam chowder good. I am at the 3 week stall and I'm sure it's because I'm hungry and am eating probably too many carbs. Protein drinks and shakes make me gag so I'm going to try and put some unjury plain protein in my yogurt oatmeal etc. to get it down that way. only 18 pounds down so far. Wish it were more but I haven't lost my appetite, or it came back I should say. Anybody thinking of taking an appetite suppressant? Seems silly but I think I need it!!! What do you think?

    Seeking Buddies 5'2" & Under

Hey! I am 5'2 currently 4 weeks post op revision sleeve to RNY. Lost 23 pounds in first 3 weeks. Stalling a bit now. Ugh. Here is a before and after of my sleeve done 4/12 and a 2 weeks before this revision in black getting ready for a run... Current weight is 168 goal is 150.
  20. My "3 week stall " didn't happen until I was 6 weeks out. Ironically it was when I was so sick from medication I was taking to try and clear a bad Clostridial infection that I could barely eat or drink. I was probably only getting 400 calories/day. I was dehydrated almost the whole time and needed IV fluids 3 times. This lasted a month and I only lost 2 pounds! As soon as I felt better, I doubled my calories and fluids and started losing again...about 3 pounds/week. As for coping, it was no big deal, I didn't even worry about it. I knew stalls were common and it wouldn't be my first one. I only weigh once /week anyways. As a matter of fact, I felt so crappy from the medication I was making deals with the universe that I didn't care if I ever lost another pound as long as I would start feeling better.
  21. I started out weighing daily. But after hitting the 3 week stall, I started weighing weekly for my sanity. [emoji1] Since being on lockdown, I've starting weighing myself a couple of times a week to make sure I'm staying on track. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. Sleeved on 2/19. Finally broke a 3 week stall. Hit 215 today. Starting weight 261. Surgery weight 251. Current weight 215. Want to be under 200 for my 6 month post op in August.

    October 2018 Sleevers

Take it easy. You’re allowed to go through the emotions and feel, you’re only human right. You’ve taken a major life altering step and this is just the beginning. There’s so much more great things in store for you. I was sleeved October 5, 2018. My starting weight was 277 surgery date was 247 and I’m currently 207. I’ve hit the dreaded 3 week stall. My emotions have been everywhere. I take it one day at a time. Also I won’t be returning back to work until January 7, 2019. My job can be stressful and I knew I’d need the extra time to take in all the changes. When life gets “cruddy”, think about how far you’ve already come. Hope you feel better..
  24. Add me to the list of those who have hit the 3 week stall.

How much protein is too much?

Seems like you've hit the 3-week stall. Totally normal! Lots and lots of posts here about it in the forums. Keep in mind that with the shakes, you were also getting the benefit of the liquid. In my program, I was still eating soups at this stage, which also helped with my liquid intake. I'm 6 months post-op and drinking water is still a full time job. 80 ounces or more every day 😎
