Looking for Surgery People 60 and UP

I'm 59 and had RNY in August. No major issues to speak of. I was pretty sore the first few days and very tired the first two weeks...but everyone has those issues. It's not an "age" thing. Good luck! -
September Surgery Buddies!!

@echubbythighs I'm about a week behind you and feeling very similarly. Thankfully recovery has been mostly smooth, save for one episode of "the foamies" last week that nearly undid me. Apparently, chili is still off the table for now. I'm switching to a capsule multivitamin next week when I run out of the chewable I have; since surgery they are disgusting and make me gag. I'm down about 18lbs since surgery, 37 total. It feels slower than I'd hoped, but I know that's a mental thing and I continue to work on my mental health/body image/self care stuff. SO MUCH of this journey is mental, it can be overwhelming. I got back on the treadmill this week, for the first time since surgery. I feel slow and unsteady, but it was good to move my body and work up a sweat. Glad you're doing well and making progress! -
Almost 3 weeks post op and afraid to eat

I'm 15 days post-op and feel the same. I'm doing purees but I'm scared to eat anything beyond my homemade oil-free hummus. Everyone keeps saying "ricotta bake", but I can't eat that because I'm lactose intolerant and I refuse to use fake cheese products or take a pill just to eat something my body says I shouldn't eat anyway. I did try a spinach artichoke puree that I made which was delicious but so hard to digest that I'm scared to try it again. I honestly think we just have to tip-toe our way through these first few weeks/months until we figure out what works for us and what doesn't. I think it's better to be cautious, anyway. -

Checking back in w/ September Gastric sleeve buddies. I’m now 5 weeks post-op and down 25 pounds. I’ve phased myself back to a regular diet and have no issues with N/V. I get the protein shakes in when I can and found the multivitamins and calcium difficult to chew so throw them in w/ a protein shake and blend the hell out of it. Current weight 162. I can only tolerate small portions and find I feel miserable if I don’t stop when my body says enough. I realize more now than ever that eating the large portions was mostly mental because my mind still tells me to finish what’s on my plate. I remain regret free in my decision to have the surgery. Best of all my back pain has diminished significantly and I have more energy. I wish you all health and happiness as you continue on your weight loss journey. -

The possibility of tearing staples at this stage is pretty low. According to what my Surgeon said and what I have read through all my research, the staples will leak, if they are going to leak in the first 7-10 days after surgery. He sent me in for a barium Xray to watch the radioactive fluid go down my throat, into my stomach and ensure none was leaking out of the staples. After this point, you are pretty much in good shape. The tissue is growing over the staples and will seal itself. The first week or so is going to be challenging as you get into more solid foods. The key is definately slow, slow, slow. and as you get into regular food that requires chewing, chew 20-30 times, put your fork down and wait a minute or so between swallowing and starting the process again. If you go too fast it will feel like it is getting stuck in your espophagus. It should take at least 30 minutes to eat your food when you start eating solid foods. Take your time. You will know if you ate too fast because it will feel like something is stuck in your throat and will hurt. Vomiting can happen at this point. It is not pleasant....but slow down and it will not happen. -

I am 58 and just completed the surgery about a month and a half ago. I recovered very quickly and was back to work in 9 days. The first couple days were hard because of the soreness and tenderness, not really pain, just achy. Every day I felt a lot better. I made it a point to where compression stockings (thigh high) for several weeks after the surgery since I was older than most who get the surgery and wanted to make sure I had not DVT since my circulation may be not as good as a 40 year old. My advice to you is to start walking as soon as you get out of surgery and wake up and don't stop walking. I try to walk 5 or 6 times a day and aim for 10K steps minimum. This has really helped me recover and firm up. -
The bad breath (and possible BO as well) from ketosis is a result of minimal carbohydrate in your diet - not uncommon early on - and improves as your diet improves and varies. Some intentionally go "low carb" in the belief that it will improve their weight loss, which exacerbates the effect. Some programs intentionally call for some carbohydrate early on via foods like oatmeal, cream of wheat, diluted fruit juice as a means of preventing this along with the low energy and lethargy that many experience in the initial weeks.

That’s sounds a perfect job for you @Dtrain84 as it ties into your previous career as a police officer. What a lovely photo of you & your daughter @kristieshannon. Her lace dress is so pretty. And I agree - you do look alike. Had another visit with the hand therapy place today & decided to wear this slim fit panelled dress with cowl neckline & pouch at the hem. Skirt is very fitted though the hem restricting my stride so I had a real wriggle walk happening as I strutted down the street 😆 It was 5 weeks yesterday since I decided to add extra protein to my quiche busy slicing a chunk off my thumb & it’s just about fully healed now (was still oozing a little from one spot until yesterday). Just dealing with some hypersensitivity & dry peeling skin. You can just see a faint line from the skin graft. I was so excited last week as I was finally able to put on a real bra for the first time - I just couldn’t do the hooks up before then without causing my thumb pain & discomfort. Such a silly little thing but boy you need your thumb for soooo much.

Hi there, I'm 2 weeks out from surgery and almost 20 lbs down. At the current rate, which will taper off, I will need some lounge wear in smaller sizes. I think that'll be easy to find. However, I'm allergic to Lycra fabric. I think it's got something related to latex in it. Anyway, some shape wear is made of Lycra. Lycra or not, as others may be curious, can anyone provide brands, cuts they like and maybe how often they've needed to change sizes? I'm 36 Female but please feel free any gender, again, others may be curious too. Thanks so much!

Almost 3 weeks post op and afraid to eat
JenKS84 replied to Tpbaxter76's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 2 weeks out tomorrow. I've been terrible this 2nd week by trying things I'm technically not supposed to be ready for. I am in the same boat but not concerned about leaks but prolonging some of the healing and pain. I'm just sick of all the sweet crap. If you're hungry, eat but like others have stated, talk to you dietician and take it easy. I've already learned that even 1 piece of dark chocolate will cause dumping. I've now got sugar free as an option but am being very careful. As I said, everything seems sweet and I'm bored with it. My goals are still the liquid intake but I've tried scrambled eggs and fried eggs... well egg. A single egg is even hard to finish, but there's no time limit or anyone saying I have to finish it. Try adding some flavorless protein powder to a yogurt. It may satisfy and get you some protein. It was a lifesaver during preop. Bone broth too. I put a baggie over it and put it back in the fridge if I can't finish it. Try to remember that our previous portion size is gone. Getting a smaller bowl or plate out can help. I read that and agree. Once you put a single egg on a dinner plate, you feel like it will not be enough. A salad plate or bread plate visually looks like more. I hope this is helpful or encouraging. I'm super new to all of this too. Good luck!! -
Dumping for 4 days straight? Need advice.
HajEddie replied to HajEddie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I have been doing a lot of research and food and drink elimination. Also portion sizes. I have taken those down to 1 1/2 ounces. Very careful to follow the 30/30 rule. It is definitely not as bad as it was last week but the diarrhea and horrible bubbling in my stomach is a constant melody, with pretty painful lower abdomen gas pain. I have discovered that semi solid foods like yogurt, pretty thick protein shakes, cottage cheese seems to stay inside longer. I found this interesting article from a couple of Dr’s from a medical website, Gastroentonolgy and Hepatology, Millennium Medical Publishing. It had a lot about uncommon sleeve problems in the early stages. This is the snippet I found interesting. “A recent prospective study suggested that dumping syndrome also occurs after VSG. It is hypothesized that VSG increases gastric mobility due to increased intraluminal pressure within the remnant stomach, ultimately causing rapid emptying to occur in addition to the know restrictive properties of this procedure.” well…. Ah…. That might be it, it might not lol. I took a cancellation appointment for the gastroenterologist I see her next Thursday. That seems a million years away. I can tell I was way more upbeat at the beginning of this post now I can tell I’m getting kinda worn down by the constant worry about running to the bathroom then having to get in the shower and wear a diaper!!!!!!! Thanks again to everyone who’s commented it has been very helpful and encouraging. -
I’m 4 months after gastric bypass
MomBee replied to Stephanie howey's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm in DBT therapy to help change my relationship with food. It's a behavior change method that gives strategies to deal with emotions and practice mindfulness. I think it's helping. I talk mainly about my relationship with food and emotional eating in therapy and I do reading and practice certain steps and techniques throughout the week. I definitely won't hurt to start talking about your relationship with food in therapy. -
I was asked if I wanted coffee in the hospital as well. And I have been drinking the caffe latte shakes (which have caffeine) every morning ever since like one week post op.

October surgery friends??
QueenB_Jean replied to LyricalWarfare's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My surgeon switched me to RNY gastric bypass last minute so I'm no longer part of the sleeve crew. I'm 6 days out and the first couple of days were tough because Tylenol just wasn't doing it. Luckily, I remembered I had a few stronger painkillers from a previous procedure and that helped so much. I've started craving solid food just a bit because I've been on a liquid diet for two weeks now. I keep finding things to do to distract myself from those thoughts. -
Almost 3 weeks post op and afraid to eat
Tpbaxter76 replied to Tpbaxter76's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you so much! I went thru the first couple of weeks with no issues so now feeling the nerves sort of had me worried but I appreciate the information. -
My surgeon was one of those who said never again. I laughed in his face. But I did go off caffeine (and sugar and carbonated beverages) during pre-op. I had a cup of coffee last week (would have been week 4 for me post-op) and found it spiked my appetite, which is NOT what I need to happen... so no más coffee. I haven't tried decaf yet. I have a coffee shop meeting tomorrow, I'll try decaf.

ProCare Health One A Day Vitamin
ShoppGirl replied to SummerTimeGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well I have my appointment tomorrow and I got labs last week so I guess we will see if my iron is low. I have been on this vitamin for two months and I’ve been taking it with my protein shake every morning. Oops. Before that I was fine but I was taking a two a day so I got the iron from the evening one I bet. -
I get a lot of headaches/migraines
HeatherE replied to marissaroth90's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Excedrine migraine can actually cause rebound headaches if you take it too often (caffeine withdrawal). Recommend you go to a good neurologist who specializes in Migraines. I go to Georgetown University’s Headache Center and they do treatments nowhere else did. Currently I do a Vyepti infusion every three months and it does wonders. I take Relpax when I do get a migraine. Good luck! -

Nice I am on week 2. I have my post op tomorrow hoping everything goes well. I am having trouble with the water intakes so that is the only thing that is worrying me. My incision look ok except I have 1 that bleeds a little everyday after I shower. -
Hello, I am new to the group but I had gastric sleeve surgery on 9/30 and was told I could start soft foods 3 days ago and I did try to but I was afraid I would rip my staples so I sort of stopped and went back to doing shakes. I do try to eat a few bites of mash potatoes but get full instantly. I am so scared of causing a leak and not sure if the way I am feeling it normal. Im not in pain although I do get the occasional nerve pinches and twinge here and there. Anyone else like this?

The way the PA in my surgeon's office put it is that you have to experiment and find what works for you. There are some things that your body will struggle with for no apparent reason. The first solid food I ate was tuna fish with some Greek yogurt and a little bit of salt/pepper. You eat slowly, in small bites with great chewing and wait to see what happens. I know this sounds weird, but I know I am generally okay with a food if I can burp. When a food doesn't work for me, it feels like there is a manhole cover over my stomach and the food feels like it backs up on me until I vomit. But if I am burping, then air is moving through the system and things will be okay. You will find there are foods that you tolerate that you don't enjoy (chewing watermelon down to a pulp is a deeply unpleasant experience). You will find some foods go down easy (for me, tuna fish, sauteed spinach and/or ground beef all go down fairly easily). You will find some foods that you can handle, but your stomach lets you know that it doesn't enjoy breaking them down (for me, grilled chicken, white rice). The minute that your stomach indicates that it is full or it is having trouble, put down your fork and stop. It's not worth pushing it. Go into this with the attitude of "I am going to try this, I am going to listen to my stomach, I am going to do the big three [slow, small, & chewed] and we will see what happens." Solid food is not something to be scared of.

I woke from my surgery hungry and it went on for weeks and I wanted to cry. But please know this.....I found that the stomach is very sensitive to your own stomach acid after surgery and that taking the omeprazole prescription usually given is imperative. It isn't just for treating the heart burn you may or may not get, but it reduces stomach acid levels to allow for the healing of the sutures of your stomach pouch to heal and to heal any ulcers that may develop. I skipped taking this prescription omeprazole because I had no heartburn, I didn't see the need for it. After reading a post from someone with the same burning hunger experience, I took her advice and started taking the omeprazole and was amazed. I was like.. I'll be damned...That burning hunger I felt day in and day out was from stomach acid. It truly made me feel I like I was starving. After a week or so, no more burning hunger.

Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?
GaGirlGettingHealthy replied to LoveSimcha's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Weight loss has basically stopped. I’d like to get to 150 but totally thrilled where I am. Wondering if this is the end of the losing since it’s been about 6 weeks. -
Here come the dumb questions and there are many more where these came from!
Splenda replied to Maroux's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My answers: A1 -- Yes, you'll be fine and the meds will work. A2 -- Buy some liquid Tylenol prior to surgery to keep around for a few weeks until you feel OK taking tablets. B1 -- Yes, but you may want to invest in a good, sturdy cane. Also helps when going from seated to standing (like the toilet). B2 -- That is going to be tough. If you have a recliner, you may want to sleep in it for a few days. B3 -- In the hospital, I could not wipe. It wasn't until later in the first week that I could do that on my own. B4 -- I had surgery on a Monday and I think I showered on Thursday or Friday. Don't scrub your belly/scars. Doc's office told me to soap up my chest and let the water/soap run down the belly. C1 -- I have a desk job and by the end of week 2, I was fully back, both physically and mentally. C2 -- I probably would not have tried biking until at least a month out. And I would have been terrified of falling off my bike and landing on my stomach. -

Good luck to all that are waiting for approvals. I was told it could take 7-15days for a response from the insurance company. I rush an open every email that comes in phone lol even though they just sent me the message Friday evening telling how long it can be and it’s only Tuesday 🤣. Very nervous not about the surgery but about the approval ready to get the 2 weeks of liquid deliciousness over 😂🤥
