    LGBTQIA?

I meant to answer this but have been exhausted. I don't know exactly what it was that impacted my post op recovery most. I had my gallbladder removed alongside the gastric bypass. besides Adult onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia I have lifelong Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. And quite a few medical conditions. I am now finding out it is likely I also have Ehlers Danlos. I am trying to find a definitive diagnosis. My post op recovery took a little longer, I was bedbound after surgery. I ended up back in hospital shortly after going home due to an undiagnosed pre-existing condition (likely tied to Ehlers Danlos) that caused Aspiration pneumonia (a form of dysphasia) I dont think the Adrenal Hyperplasia itself affected my recovery. Even with all my medical conditions and even with the challenges I have had over the course of my surgery and the recovery and the challenges now - I do not regret having had Gastric Bypass surgery. I would never have reached the weight I have now which is a normal healthy weight for my height that I never could reach even as a pre-teen. Well I cannot remember being this weight. I have to find ways to work around different barriers and challenges I guess. I was extremely weak but now I think it was both due to M.E. and possible Ehlers Danlos. I just would do it again as well as the skin removal and body lift procedures I had despite the challenge that was ... especially because of the roadblocks that Adrenal hyperplasia, PCOS, and the inability to exercise due to M.E imposed on me. caused.
  2. I’m disappointed I started my preop diet three weeks in advance and I only lost ten pounds. My surgery is scheduled for AM and I’m so nervous. So many emotions. Nervous something will go wrong or that I won’t lose much weight. Thoughts?

    Pre-op diet weight loss

You're eating less than 500 very low carb calories a day. That, in itself, will cause a little weight loss in 6 days. But the bulk of what you've lost is likely water. Because of your low carbs, you are stripping your liver of all the glucose stored there...so it shrinks. (Which is really nice, because there is a little more room for the surgeon to work with the liver reduced) As the glucose in the liver is used, a lot of water is expelled, too. This "instant significant weight loss" when we mostly eliminate carbs from our diets....is why people are so delighted when they go on a Keto diet and instantly lose weight and inches around their waists. But they're not losing fat....they're just losing their emergency glucose and the water it's stored in, and just shrinking their livers. Your loss is normal and I wouldn't worry about it. Keep following your team's instructions.
  4. I started using weights about six weeks out, but lighter weights. Now at five months out the weights I use have gone up from 10 to 20 lbs, depending on what I am doing. Trying to keep things as firm as possible, and I found working out helps take off the lbs.
  5. it's mostly water. Plus most people lose a lot more the first week than they do the second week - but again, that's because a big chunk of that first week's loss is water. It's unlikely you'll lose another 10.5 lbs during week 2 of the pre-op diet - but even if you did, why would you worry? Most people would love to lose 21 lbs during the pre-op diet! You'll likely lose some more weight the second week, but probably not as much as you have so far.
  6. Hi everyone! I’m am on day 6 of my pre-op diet and I have lost 10.5lbs. My daily “meals” are 2 premier protein shakes, 3oz of chicken or fish, 1 cup steamed veggies or 2 cups of raw veggies, 64 oz of water and 1 cup chick or beef broth. It seems like an excessive amount of weight I have lost in a matter of 6 days. Is this normal? My pre-op diet weight was 264.5lbs and today I weigh exactly 254.0lbs. Just worried I’m losing too much weight too quickly. I still have 8 days to go until surgery. Any one have similar weight loss on pre-op? Thank you in advance :)

    What was your tipping point?

My tipping point: My butt being too big for some seats or clothes, not feeling sexy often, body discomforts, lower self esteem/confidence, not sitting on my husband's lap anymore, not getting on top when being intimate with my husband, health risks, health problems, not wearing a bikini/ belly shirts, my son poking at me and saying " mom you have a big butt and big stomach", being at my current weight of 333lbs!!! I am soooo OVER it!!! I can't believe I did this to myself. My yo yo diets did not give long term results, it is time to get professional/medical help. I am happy and grateful for the opportunity to get gastric bypass surgery soon!

    Calorie Deficit question

I am 4 months VSG and I walk 60 mins 4 days, and lift weights for 60-90 minutes 3x/wk and walk 30 minutes on those days. Been lifting since June 1. Since then, I noticed if my calories are 800, protein 60g I do not lose anything. My Fluids are minimum 64 oz all days. If I increase my calories to 1000-1100 and increase my protein to 90-100g I start to lose again. I am not interested in decreasing exercise that just seems counterintuitive to me. I do what seems to work for me and my activity level, and I am one who believes it is important to get my BMR increased so I have a smooth transition into maintenance.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I completely understand these fears and have a lot of the same ones, particularly the failing, regain, and loose skin. Failing and regain is what I’ve gone through my whole life with failed diets, and though it’s a possibility still after surgery, this tool is going to help me more than my sheer willpower ever did. as far as hair loss, there are so many advancements in hairpieces! I have worn a lace wig since high school due to a condition I have called short Anagen syndrome, so hair loss isn’t even a concern for me only because my hair is already extremely thin and short (like a baby’s) and I wear wigs 🤷🏻‍♀️. Look up YouTube videos for “lace wig install” and you’ll see how easy and realistic they are, just to hold you over until your hair regrows. Loose skin is a concern because I know it’ll prevent me from looking like I always dreamed I’d look, but there are surgeries for that. Additionally, the way I see it is, either I deal with the extra skin, or deal with the extra fat. It’s only one or the other, no other choice. I’d rather deal with extra skin and fit into nice clothes and feel energetic and healthy, than continue down this path and gain more and more weight. doubts are normal! This forum has helped me a lot in seeing that there are more successes than failures in this process. Best of luck to you.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

Hi Onmywayfrom256, I can definitely relate to your doubts. I know that the decision to have this surgery is right for me at this point, but I do have some fears of it not working the way I hoped, loose skin, hair falling out, regain, & complications. I have dealt with mild hair loss after having each of my 2 children. I am less worried about this, as I heard it is temporary. Still not fun. Hopefully, protein & iron supplements will help. The loose skin is something that I may not be able to avoid, but I am going to try to take collagen in addition to all the other vitamins & supplements we need. I will also try cocoa butter & compression. Not sure if any of it will help, but I will try. Some things unfortunately are out of our control, so it is easy to fear the unknown. This is a big step we are all taking, and we all want to succeed in something that has been challenging for us. Most of us have been let down before with weight loss attempts, so those doubts unfortunately pop up. Hoping you feel better knowing that someone else has concerns about the road ahead. Congratulations on your upcoming surgery. Wishing you a successful journey. 🤞😊

    Eating disorder treatment

Bariatric Surgery patients represent a surprisingly increasing number of patients in inpatient treatment for anorexia according to John's Hopkins. Yes, anorexia and other eating disorders are a serious risk for our population. Yes, treatment....including eating more.... will be a help even if you gain a little weight to find a managable maintenance level of calories. Passing out is incredibly dangerous and can kill you or others if you drive. It's also incredibly unsafe on stairs, around heavy equipment, and in the company of unsafe people. Being that low on nutrition is hard on your body, particularly your heart. You can do permenant damage in short order. Take your condition seriously. Your very demanding job and thinner body are of no use to you if you imperil your safety, health, and eventually your life. (it's tough on relationships, too) Wishing you the very best.

3 weeks Post Op and so sick

There could be many reasons why your experiencing this & I hope they discover your cause soon & there’s a simple remedy. Out of curiosity did the nausea start when you moved to the purée stage? You may not be ready for denser food yet & may need to stay on liquids for a little longer. Did it start when you commenced your multi vitamins? They used to make me nauseous & I often threw up. Have you contacted your surgeon? I’d give them a call. As @catwoman7 said increased liver enzymes while losing weight is not unusual. My liver function was off & cholesterol levels rose & my doctors were concerned too. It all went back to my usual levels when I stopped losing. A lot of hormones, enzymes, etc are stored in your fat & as you lose weight they’re released into your blood stream causing the elevated levels. But it’s always better to have these things checked to ensure everything is really ok. Good luck.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

Hi, my sleeve is scheduled for July 5th. Honestly, I am a nervous wreck and full of doubts. I am worried about losing weight, keeping it off and the hair loss. I know it’s pure vanity, but I don’t have lots of hair to begin with, so I am really freaking out about that part. I’ve lost almost 28 pounds with pre-op dieting and so I’m also wondering if I should just keep going on my own. Anyone else struggling with doubts?

    May Surgeries - check in!

I'm 5 weeks post-surgery, which was on 5/18. There sure are peaks and valleys associated with this journey. The highs are every Wednesday morning when I do my weekly weigh-in. So far I'm down over 40 pounds, which I'm very grateful for. I'm down over 50 pounds from my highest weight and am down two pants sizes already. Here are the lows I'm experiencing. I hope some of you who've maybe experienced the same can relate your stories as well. It's almost as if I'm "afraid to eat" right now. For breakfast, I'm able to eat a few pieces of watermelon or about half to three-quarters of a scrambled egg. I've been trying to eat lunch every day, but sometimes I'm just too full from breakfast and the water I've been drinking since after breakfast. My wife has been making dinner every evening and I've been trying to eat some of that (chicken dishes, a bit of pasta to try, etc.) I get food jealous and food depressed is how I should describe it. Of course, I'd like to eat more, but it's just not feasible anymore. I guess I was just naive that I would get full so quickly. Has anyone dealt with a change of taste since their surgery? The stuff I used to drink like diet iced tea just doesn't taste the same anymore and I can't stand it. Honestly, the drinks that are going best for my stomach right now is water mixed with flavored crystal light and regular coke (I know, I know)... Also, a little bit of ice cream also helps settle my stomach. Sorry for the ranting...I'm just kind of in a bad place right now. I love that I've lost so much weight in such a short time, but I'm really struggling with all of the food stuff. Sometimes I think I should've just stayed fat and enjoyed the food I eat, but then I also think of my 10-year-old daughter and how I need to be healthy and around for a long time for her and that certainly helps.

That’s still pretty good. My weight loss is interesting. I’m not losing steadily. I’ve hit several stalls already. I got my first one about three weeks out from surgery …. Which was expected. I stayed the same weight for weeks, then all of a sudden I dropped a lot. I’m now in another stall. I’ve been stuck at 246 for two weeks now. I tend to drop a lot in short periods and then stall for long periods…. It’s also hard to meet my protein intake goal. I hate the shakes (I gag just thinking about them) but I still have to drink them otherwise I won’t meet the protein goal. I’m down to one though. I can get 30 grams of protein in through food and then one shake a day. I split that shake up so I don’t have to drink it all at once. clothes are another thing I judge my loss by. I had to buy an emergency pair of swim bottoms so I could actually continue going to the beach and pool without being arrested for indecent exposure lol. In sizing: I was a 24 or a 3XL pre surgery and I am now about a size 16 or extra large. I’m so happy I made this choice

    8 months NO WEIGHT LOSS

Weight loss is an important way to improve or maintain health, but it is not the only way. Can you forget about weight loss for a while and work on finding a healthy diet and regular exercise that you can stick to and even enjoy for the long term? Focusing on weight loss can be counterproductive since failure leads to giving up, when the ultimate goal is improved health and vitality, not dress size. For me walking, bicycling and dancing are so much more enjoyable than CrossFit, so I would be much more likely to continue them, even if I don’t lose weight. The same thing applies to your diet. Work with a nutritionist (if you can) to come up with a sustainable diet plan. It may be that your doctor’s weight goal won’t be attained, but if your health and happiness improves, you win anyway.

    8 months NO WEIGHT LOSS

I also can sort of relate. I had surgery on July 9, 2020 and have been in the same size pants since the first week of February. They are loose but it's still very frustrating and disappointing. I work out daily 5 to 6 times a week 30 to 45 minutes and sometimes twice daily. And I don't take walks, I do cardio, HIIT, weights and Tabata. I was 213 day of surgery and am 143 last time I stepped on the scale. I have had issues with my period and bled heavily from January 25th until I got an IUD a little over a month ago. Problem is the IUD has caused more eating and even a taste for sweets again which I lost after surgery. I plan to have it removed next week. Surgeon's office said I'd be at goal by my July appointment and I'm 20 pounds from it. My body does not like being as thin as I like it to be. It's always been this way and I've had to basically kill myself over exercising and not eating to get to near the weight I'd like to be. I wonder if it's just genetics for some people. I'll see what my surgeon says in 2 weeks.
  19. This is also very true for me. Sometimes I will have grilled chicken kebab in the week and find more weight has shifted. I think its described as the 'woosh' effect, something to do with your metabolism adjusting.

3 weeks Post Op and so sick

this is only semi-related, but it's not uncommon for liver enzyme levels to rise during rapid weight loss. Big drops in weight are hard on livers. My enzyme levels were elevated my first year which freaked out my PCP, but then I read that it's not uncommon during rapid weight loss. Once my weight stabilized, my liver enzymes were normal again. BUT....you evidently have something going on - but whatever it is may or may not be affecting your liver enzyme levels. The weight loss can do that. I hope they can figure out what is going on - that would be miserable!
  21. I understand your pain. I had the surgery over 10 years ago and had similar reactions. To this day if I eat or drink just a very little bit too much I get sick. This was one of the worst decisions I have ever made. I would recommend to everyone not to have this operation. Want to lose weight? Eat less and exercise. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  22. Hey everyone, I am a 28 yo F who had gastric bypass over two years ago and lost approx. 120lbs from 299lbs to 178lbs. I was told by my therapist before surgery that I had eating disorder behaviors and thoughts and should see a specialist but I refused and thought I would be ok after losing weight. My thoughts, obsessions, and food restriction has increased after surgery where it’s all I can think about. I had a few scary situations with passing out and finally agreed to see the Eating Disorder (ED) specialist. She immediately told me I needed a higher level of care for atypical anorexia and recommended partial hospitalization. I have a very demanding job that I can’t possibly take time off from so I went to therapy and a dietitian weekly for a little over a month but as soon as I would eat “normal” scheduled meals I gained 4-8lbs and would freak out and not eat. I agreed to be assessed by a treatment center who recommended the partial program but agreed to let me try the intensive outpatient treatment that is 3 nights a week due to my work situation. I start this Monday and I am just so scared about how much weight I am going to gain trying to follow the doctors orders as well as if it’s even going to help. Had anyone else experienced this?

I’m actually dropping more weight bc of the slight calorie increase believe it or not! I am hitting the protein goals bc of the shakes and alot of eggs, but I have a hard time meeting calories, but that’s ok. I am suppose to eat 6 1-2oz meals a day, but I am just meeting that at the end of the 1st week of purée. At first I could only do 1oz and only did 4 meals. Now going into the 2nd week of purée I can almost do 2oz per meal and fitting in about 5 meals per day.
