    5weeks post op

Hey! 5weeks out for me too! Done mine on May 11th, but I've only dropped like 11pounds in 2 weeks, stalled til now 🥲 it's definitely unnerving and I truly understand how you feel! Had my first month check with my doctor last week and even he thought that I was kinda slow (they expected abt 17 - 30lbs lost in first month before The Stall) so... a bit demotivating but I've been getting a lot of positive vibes from the peeps here! I guess our diff is that I tend to miss hitting protein target at times due to work but I've started working out a lil and try to eat more protein now. Hoping all the best for you and cheer up! You're not alone )

    5weeks post op

Every one loses at their own rate. There is no right or wrong amount of weight to lose each week. Yes, there may be average amounts of loss people who are similar height, weight, age, gender, etc. may have in common. As long as you see the trend of your weight loss going down you’re succeeding. The amount you lose each week will also slow as you progress. It is possible you are experiencing a stall as has been suggested. These are extremely common. We talk about the three week stall but that first one can happen at week 2, 3, 4, 5 …. It’s just your body taking a breath & trying to catch up with the changes (surgery, weight loss, reduced calories, dietary changes,…). You will likely have other stalls as you’re losing. We’ve all been on that gain, lose, gain roller coaster. Personally I know the reason I always regained after losing was because the diets I was on weren’t sustainable or I just went back to the same old way of eating. I’d start regaining a couple of weeks after the diet ended. The difference this time is that I work at sticking to the changes I made to how I eat, what I eat, why I eat every day. I have many years ahead of me but I’m going to work my butt off to try to stay my course cause that desire to go down my old path is always there. I just understand it & manage it better now. Your success starts & ends in your head. It’s not just what you put in your mouth. You have to do the head work. Many do this with the help of a therapist, others do it themselves. There are lots of people here who are happy to share experiences & offer support. Follow your plan, meet your protein goals, get your fluids in, be more active and your weight loss will continue. You’ll get there.
  3. Belize, you'll handle this fine after all that! I've never had surgery, had three simple births and a total wuss to pain. I'm having a 'painful' recovery compared to my group (30 or so sleeved the same month) and I'm really not in nor ever was in pain. I kept the pain pump in the hospital as long as I could and even asked for more but it made me really nauseous so I stopped that. Once they switched me to the liquid lor-tab that was all I needed. I was sleeved on 8/28, a Wednesday, came home Friday. I slept in the recliner Friday night and kept my pain meds every 4 hours. Saturday I couldn't get up with out help because of sore abs but was comfortable going to every 6 hours for meds. That night I was able to sleep 1/2 the night in bed with my hubby but couldn't turn or change positions so he helped me move to the recliner. Sunday I woke up pain free, sore but not at all bad. I took meds around 2pm and took a nap. That night with a 1/2 dose of meds I was able to sleep all night in bed and was able to turn myself once. By Monday I could get up out of bed and the recliner on my own. Since then, I've been able to do some house chores (dishes, vacuuming, pick up, etc) plus drive my kids around all with out meds. I'm currently taking a 1/2 dose around 3 to alleviate soreness and enable me to help kids with homework and make dinner then a full dose to go to sleep. I anticipate dropping the mid day meds tomorrow or Friday. Sorry if that's too much detail but I thought it might help to give you a picture of how a 'painful' recovery is. Most of my group stopped pain meds the day they were released or 1-2 days after. I gather that that's the norm. Lastly, remember, anticipation of pain is almost always worse than actual. Maybe ask for an anti anxiety for post op. confusing anxiety and actual pain can make treatment worse. Good luck and keep us posted! Feel free to pm me if you have any other questions.
  4. I agree with the previous posters. Have you sat down and listed the potential risks of you NOT having surgery (high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, GERD, joint damage, shortened life span, etc.)? Doing that was an eye opener for me. I changed my mind about the surgery more than once, but every time I took a handful of hypertension meds or faced using my CPAP machine, everything came back into focus. I want a chance at health and a happier life again. Either way, it was going to be a gamble. But that was what was best for me, you're the only one who can decide what would be best for you. After having had surgery with Dr. Rodriguez myself last week, I can honestly say that you have made an excellent choice there. He's very, very good at what he does. If you have any questions, or if I can help in any way, please let me know. I wish you the best!

    Just got the call

I HATED the pre-op liquid diet ---- so hard (at least for me). It's much easier after the surgery as there are so many other distractions and you really don't feel like eating (or drinking). Best wishes to you --- I'm 5.5 weeks out and feel great now!
  6. Thanks so much for the welcome PattyGee!!!! My surgeon is Dr. Macaron in Middlebury. I'll have my surgery at St. Mary's Hospital. I did actually talk to Oxford a few weeks back and they told me that as long as they get everything they need and don't need to go back and fourth with the dr's office getting things, then its a pretty quick turnaround. I don't think i'll relax till I get the go ahead from the insurance and get a surgery date!!!! If all goes well maybe by August????

    August Sleevers...

Start looking at what you eat, maybe a food diary that way you can track your weak spots! I had some ceremonial meals but tried really hard to keep life as normal. I am on the first week of pre op diet and after the first three days have settled into a routine. Keep reading the posts on here as they are fantastic at answering all of your questions. Good luck and keep your eye on the prize
  8. Hoping to have my sleeve surgery in September at Lahey Clinic Hospital in Burlington, Ma. with Dr. David Brams if all goes well with my pre-op testing. I am excited! 70 years old, retired RN and ready to be done with this weight and how it gets in my way. Had thought I would only consider the band, since it is reversible, I thought...but after lots of research I found myself thinking I wanted to do this only once, that is have surgery only once and read myself into believing the gastric sleeve was the best option for me. The nurse practitioner, who went over my particular family history, agreed and so here I am...waiting...but not so nervous as I was a week ago. I am excited to have it and move forward. mojaleski from NH
  9. My two c-sections (30 and 26 years ago) were harder for me. This was really a walk in the park compared to those. I was much more sore with the kids. For my sleeve, I was up walking 3 hours after I into my room. No nausea, that was my biggest fear and it didn't happen. I sat in a comfy chair all afternoon and evening. I walked laps every hour. That helped more than I can say. Didn't get into the bed till I went to sleep that night. Next morning I was able to go home. I had set my mind to walking as soon as I could as so many people said that would help. They were right. Getting up out of the bed the first time was a doozy but after that, it was quite manageable. Stay ahead of the pain for the first 48 hours with meds, that what's it's there for. Good luck, you will love your sleeve! I'm 4 months out and would do it again in a heartbeat!
  10. First of all I have so many questions, I decided to do this because of my weight, Im tired of being critized and I really want a change in my life and plus is for healthy issues. Im super nervous help with questions about pain and how much will I lose like in 3 weeks.

    Weight loss Timetable/Stall

unless you're the size of one of the participants on "My 600 lb Life", your weight loss is normal. I lost 16 lbs the first month. Many of us (probably most) lost somewhere between 15-25 lbs the first month. Stalls along the way are also very normal, the first one usually occurring within the first 4-6 weeks after surgery (often the 3rd week, which is why we call it "the three week stall"). I have mixed feelings about "My 600 lb Life" because I think it gives a lot of WLS patients unrealistic expectations. Starting BMI is one of the factors that influence your rate of weight loss, and the people on that show tend to start out at MUCH higher BMI's than your average WLS patient. As long as your weight is trending down, relax. I was a "slow loser" from the get-go, and I lost all of my excess weight - over 200 lbs.
  12. Hi all, I am 9 months post op from VSG. I’m wondering if it common to develop hypoglycemia post op? My bariatric NP ordered a 3 hour glucose tolerance test and my glucose levels were below normal. If you have experienced this, what did they do? Is it long-term? Thanks!
  13. Good News!! My surgeon was able to reschedule my surgery for July 1st. I am elated to report that all went well! I am feeling very little discomfort, dilaudid is helpful tho. But I have only needed it once around 3:30 am and again around 11am. Otherwise, I have been able to get 34 medi cups of varying liquids-water, protein shake, fortified juice, broth, and applesauce. All goes down well, no nausea or vomiting. I can tell when I am full. I usually have a burp or just a feeling of not wanting anymore. It is however humbling to think about how much I really do need to focus on staying hydrated and keeping the medi cups of liquid going. Overall, I am being discharged in an hour and will be going home!! I am so grateful to my surgeon, Dr. Michael Schwartz, and the team at St. Joes Hospital in St. Paul. They really took great care of me. I am so happy that things are going well so far. I encourage you pre-op folks to have faith on your surgeon and your creator, your strength and all will be well! Here's to RNY!! (Lifts my medi shot glass) ????
  14. You shouldn't have any problem getting an approval thru bcbs of alabama. I have bcbs of alabama. I called and spoke to a rep and you shouldn't any problem getting approved as long as you meet their criteria and provide medical necessity. I have gotten approval within a week on the five other surgeries I have had.
  15. In a few months you'll be eating normal foods again, just tiny portions of healthier foods. I find that I eat so slow (gives me time to talk more too!!!) that I finish eating my tiny portion about the same time every one else does. Don't fret! Advice? Buckle up and get ready! It's a crazy ride!!!! Also keep a sense of humor. There will be weeks where you do everything perfect and lose nothing and weeks you do everything wrong and lose 4 pounds. There is a huge learning curve, don't expect miracles,be patient with yourself (and those around you cuz at some point you'll want to kill them for saying something stupid), and do NOT obsess about the scale....they are evil and do strange things, the scale will make you crazy. Also, men often lose faster then women, this does not mean your husband is doing better, everyone loses at their own rate. And congratulations on taking control of your health. Enjoy the new you my friend! HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 206.8

    Slow Loser :(

Are you at least drinking the Skinny Starbucks drinks? I am pre op but I have tried the Skinny vanilla latte and it is good and so is the Skinny Cinnamon Dolce or even the Skinny Carmel macchiato. You will still be consuming calories from the milk but it won't be as bad. 4lbs per week loss isn't what I would call slow I would definitely take that. Also at what weight did you start at ? I have noticed that those who start lower seem to lose slower as well. The scale is moving in the right direction at least:) If you give up your Starbucks or skinny it down it may move even faster.
  19. I have BCBS PPO (Massachusetts) and was approved the same week my surgeon's office submitted the paperwork. No medically supervised diet was required.
  20. Thank you bunnyk. What did you do during those 3 months

    advice please, re liquid diet

My surgeon told me to expect to lose about a pound a day. Another way to figure it out is this: how many calories do you normally eat in a day? If it is 2,000 cal and a liquid diet is on a average 800 cal you are taking in 1,200 less cal a day. A deficit of 3,500 cal loses one pound. So at that rate you'd lose approx a pound every 2-3 days. Of course if you are normally taking in over that, the pounds come off faster.
  22. Since were talking about pre op diets, during your last 3 days, you're supposed to be on clear liquids. Do you still do your protein shakes?
  23. I didn't go on liquids 2 weeks out so don't think it should impact surgery date but for sure, you can't cheat at all for 2 days out! The other advise is very good. I struggle with wanting food not for coping but because I am a huge foodie and travel all over the world for work and eating different foods was such an exciting thing for me so I had to come to terms with the lifestyle change. Good luck!

    REALLY bad timing...

Yup. My doctor retired the week before my appointment and I had to go to a new doc in the practice. I marched right in, told her my history, told her with confidence that I needed a letter and walked out with one. End of story.

    Give up

Push through! Trust me it gets better! When you get to the purée phase you will see that it was all worth it and it gets SO much better. I had the head hunger bad for the 1st 2 weeks.
