  1. I dumped in the first 6 months with the sleeve. I did it twice making dumb choices. I haven't dumped since. Also most RNY people only dump in the beginning also. Dumping isn't an always thing for most people. There is no reason to choose a surgery on dumping. A lot of people that are sweets lovers and choose RNY are disappointed to learn long term they have eat all the sweets they want. Nothing will stop you from eating cake but you. What surgery you want is a personal choice. I picked the sleeve because it just seemed more logical to me. I'm single, live alone, not near family and I needed something with fast recovery, the least amount of long term maintenance and the lower complications rates. @MarinaGirl seems to really hate the sleeve for reasons that don't even make sense. She had an experimental surgery that has little data to back up that isn't even widely performed. No one rags on her about that, but she makes a point to show up in every thread she can and bash the sleeve. If you really listen to Dr Weiner he says every WLS should be considered a one time shot, and the reason is because you only get the metabolic reset once. Revisions don't give people the same metabolic reset as the first time. Plus with the exception of the band, because the band is just a terrible product, the reason people need revisions has nothing to do with the surgery and every thing to do with their food addiction, which he also explains. If someone is a food addict, surgery is not going to save them, no matter how many times they have it done. GERD is at a 20% in the general population and 10% in sleevers. If you already have GERD prior to surgery then getting the sleeve (unless the cause of your GERD is a hiatal hernia) is not a smart option. @Terri70 You just have to pick. The weight loss in the end will be about the same no matter what surgery you choose, because how much weight you lose and if you maintain depends solely on you and your choices. Weight loss surgery after about 6 months won't do the work for you, you have to. So the surgery you choose just depends on what you are most comfortable with.

  3. Well, I have high blood pressure, hypothyroid disease, and PCOS...all of which can be controlled or alleviated with weight loss. I wasn't greatly successful with Weight Watchers or Nutrisystem. I'd lose 20-30lbs stop and gain it all back and then some. I also have increasing problems with pain in my knees and back. I'm only 30 and I don't want to keep going down a road that's surely going to lead to diabetes, depression and heart disease. i chose the band over the sleeve or bypass because if there are problems, it can be reversed. Also with the other surgeries, people tend to have serious vitamin deficiencies, dumping, and possible bowel complications like adhesions and leaks. I hope to have children someday and a vitamin deficiency could affect a baby. Lastly, if someone were to gain weight back, we can have the band tightened. Sleeve and bypass patients have to have another surgery for a revision...if that is an option. However, I flip-flopped up until 2 weeks before my surgery as to whether I should have the sleeve or not. But these are the reasons I ultimately chose the lapband and I think I made the right decision for sure.

    Started the process this morning!

Hello Randi, thanks for starting this conversation! I'm a lurker myself and I finally decided to do something. First thing being taking my lapband this morning!![emoji114][emoji114][emoji114][emoji114]. It was 7 years of a horrible relationship!! This past month was the final end and with the inspiration of those I've read on bariatricpal, I saw my surgeon last week, insurance approved the removal in 2 days after my initial consultation. I'm waiting for the approval for gastric sleeve revision that was submitted 4/30. I'm hoping not to go through the hoops again!🤞🤞 My surgeon wants to wait 2 to 3 months between removal and revision which I'm fine with although I was initially gutted I couldn't do it simultaneously! I agreed with her reasoning. I've been up and about since removal this morning and will be going to work on Sunday with no problems. I hope to get the sleeve end of summer after a worry and lapband free summer holiday. I'm 5'3" and 199lbs as of this morning. So "low" BMI within a hair's breath of 35 (drank some water at the surgeon consultation[emoji3]). Totally beyond stalled with the lapband and hated life after the band! Paid out of pocket too[emoji25][emoji25]. Everyone here has been inspirational and I pray to actually get to a weight I've thought was impossible and I hope to share for that person like me. Thanks to my new found pals[emoji8][emoji7] Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Drinking with Meals?

My docs said drink up to the meal but wait 30 min til after. Pretty much as stated above. They told me it was de rig our previously for the 30 min on each side but has since been revised. And they are crazy strict with protocol.

    Ball of nerves

Yes there is a whole forum for revision surgeries and sleeve to bypass seems to be mentioned on here quite often because of GERD. It’s a pretty common procedure.

    First time

I had the sleeve many years ago and it took awhile, but I developed severe Gerd and esophagitis. In August of last year, I had to get a revision to bypass, and I haven't had any Gerd symptoms so far. So at this point (entering my 8 month post-op), it has really, really helped me sleep better, feel better.

8 year veteran but gaining weight!

Your question is very broad and it's almost impossible to offer any meaningful suggestions without more insight. Have you discussed your weight gain with your surgeon and if so what was the recommendation? What type of revision are you considering? Do you maintain a food log? Did you ever maintain a food log during your journey? Do you exercise regularly and if so, how much? How much weight did you lose following your surgery and did you reach your goal? What are your thoughts on what changed from the five year mark to the point that you started gaining? What steps did you take when you initially started to gain weight? What was the result? There are lots of knowledgeable folks here who are anxious to help in any way we can. Help us help you.
  10. I too am having revision end of December. Super excited but scared. I swore I would never have gastric bypass and now here I am
  11. I posted this on another website but no one answered me :confused5: Anyone approved on the first time for a revision from Realize band (2/11/10) to Sleeve? I just recently had to change insurance from Anthem to Cigna PPO.I tried to get the revision with Anthem in Sept. and Oct. of 2011 but I was denied twice, even though I had pouch dilatation, a minor slip and very minimal weight loss (40 lbs), I was told I was denied because I haven't had my band for 2 years. It will be 2 years next month. The patient coordinator was fighting for me but I didn't get approved. In my mind I kind of gave up. I was unfilled from Sept to Dec. and I have gained closed to 20 pounds...that is half of what I lost with the band in almost two years!!! Frustation!!!! Well, January comes and my husband's company (they always buy the weight loss rider) changes insurance to CIgna PPO. I find out that my original bariatric doctor is not covered at all. So I am referred by Cigna to my new doctor. I'm in the process of jumping though their hoops just to be seen by him, which is fine with me. I've done my research and he has a pretty good track record. The staff in the office is nice and actually listened to what I had to say, which was very important to me because I was very scared about having to start all over. I have an endoscopy scheduled for next Thursday, so hopefully after that I can get the ball rolling.... So what do you think my chances that I can get approved on the first try? Thank You :aureola: Sabrina

    Questions For Surgeon

@@mylastchance21 Your surgeon should not push you into the bypass for weight alone. Both the sleeve and the bypass deliver excellent weight loss outcomes. The biggest difference is bypass typically happens a little faster but in the end both surgeries can handle massive weight loss. That being said, there are other reasons related to your health that your doctor might push you toward bypass. Mine did and I am thankful everyday that I made the decision to have bypass over sleeve. The biggest one for me was gerd. I had it severely and had I had the sleeve it could have made it even worse because of the design of the surgery. My gerd is resolved 100% and has been since the day I got out of surgery. Also all my other comorbitities are in remission. If he recommends it for a reason, do your research. I know I was so upset when it happened to me and then I started researching the benefits of bypass and I found I was afraid of things that honestly were not important. I was mostly afraid of the malabsorption that comes with bypass. Then I learned that all of us have to take Vitamins for life even sleevers. All of us have to go for blood tests at 3,6,12,18 months and every 12 months after that for life. Once I understood that RNY (the gold standard in WLS) was the best option for me, I felt fantastic about it and was excited for the day I had it. I also knew that I wanted to have 1 surgery and be done. Had I went with the sleeve anyway, and my gerd was not cured, I would have ended up needing a revision to RNY anyway.....I did not want that. I have since lost all of my excess weight, 152lbs. I currently weight 158 and have been maintaining since March of this year. Best of luck to you and I hope all goes well. Both options are excellent and will give you the weight loss you likely need.

    Anyone ketogenic?

I've been doing keto for the last couple of months. Up until this week I wasn't sure if my revision to a sleeve would pan out so I needed to really dig in and better my lifestyle. I love it, and plan on keeping it up once I'm sleeved (but I think it'll be slightly easier) my biggest hurdle as it is, is finding lapband friendly AND keto friendly foods. But I'm down 24 lbs so far. I also add the keto OS drinks. That adds ketones to your body and helps a TON Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Band to sleeve 11/09

Hi, I also had my revision the same day nd just came home from the hospital yesterday. Ended up in the icu and needed a blood transfusion. They keep telling me the pain is going to get better but I am to the point of regret. Are you having pain? I am getting my second drain removed on Friday and i cant wait. I think this is one of the main sources of the most pain. I have had many surgeries but never did I have an experience like this. Please tell me I did the right thing?

    Waiting for my surgery date....

Feb 7th everyone signed off on my case so it could go to insurance. Drs. office didn't send to them until Feb 28th. Then took until end of March to find out insurance didn't need anything they sent (first request denied, by the way) except a peer to peer review by phone or an appeal the whole time. April 7th peer to peer review done by my doctor and the insurance doctor..approved! But, April 14th found out the paper work wasn't right...requested revised approval letter...took until today, April 23rd to get it done! So...signed, sealed and delivered APPROVAL!!! I go tomorrow for my chest xray-EKG and blood work. Patience has been worn out...but now I can see the light. I will pray for your answer to come much quicker. Chin up! It really does come through.

    CIGNA HMO, Texas

I was a self pay (I had Aetna), for the lapband in April. I have been extremely frustrated with the lack of results. I know that the lapband works for some people, but it really was a waste of $$ for me. I am only down 20 pounds, and have had a dozen fills. I just got a new job that has Cigna so when I saw this post it got me hoping that I could have a revision done to a RNY..... Does anyone know if Cigna HMO will also cover a RNY???
  17. We are just about the same! I had my band about 6 years ago and just revised to rny yesterday. The initial time in recovery was so much worse, but now I'm really starting to feel good. I am feeling hungry, though, are you?
  18. Hi Pam, I had surgery October 30, 2017. My first day post-op was horrible. Pain cross my chest and spasms all day. Dr. Wanted to keep me an extra day. I should have listened. Trying to keep up with the liquids was very hard. I also was drained no energy x about 2 weeks. I was started on soft diet on Tuesday and can't seem to eat much. Dr says it's normal x me. I've had the lapband, revision and finally had to be taken out in January. He said I have scar tissue and expects it to be tight. Hope you recover quickly.

    Information On How To Pay

I posted Dr Kelly's contact info in a separate post, but here it is. I paid $6000 because I had a revision from lap-band, but $5500 appears to be the going rate for Dr Kelly based on what others have posted. Here is Dr Kelly's contact info. Portion Size

I had a lapband to RNY revision on 3/28. I am having a very hard time figuring out what my new portion size should be. My Dr says that a lot of his revision patients seem to have the same issue. The "signals" or soft stops that I had with the lapband are not there anymore. And by the time I get a signal that I had enough with RNY, I am beyond full. How do you know when you are satisfied and had enough? Sent from my LG-H631 using the BariatricPal App
  21. Smooth Move Tea is what works for me. You can buy it at any grocery store. It's gentle and natural. My surgery was July 22nd. Band to Sleeve revision.
  22. I had my revision in one procedure. But, the port incision/area was the absolute most painful part of the healing. I had a flipped port, and tons of scar tissue so that contributed to my pain/discomfort in that area. I've heard the same thing from several revision patients even when they had zero issue with their ports. Congrats on getting rid of the band, and best wishes on the revision to VSG. You'll love the sleeve.
  23. Thanks Tiffykins, I wish I could get the sleeve revision at the same time. The doc says he wants my stomach to heal for 1-2 months. I think I am going to tell him that 2 months will not be doable for me. I dont have any erosion or slippage I dont think. I have had the barium swallow thingie and an egd and no red flags went up. I am ready to get a start on this journey!

  25. I had the RNY 16 yrs ago and lost 140 lbs. I started out at 388 lbs and now weigh 270 as I have gained about 30 lbs back. I never reached my goal weight and am struggling to lose any more. I am considering having a revision to the duodenal switch. Has anyone had this done? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated!!
